I can’t talk for anyone else but I’m here on Bohol with my girlfriend for the next few months and I’ve delt with 2 hospitals ACE and Ramiro with issues ranging from my girlfriends Thyroid issues to her having very early stages of Pneumonia to my having a viral infection. While I’m certainly glad as hell I had her with me to help me navigate the system. I’ve have found it to be much better than I expected. Yes it’s old and a lot of equipment needs upgrading, but I have been really pleasantly surprise by the quality of the 3 doctors we’ve seen.
Just to clarify, there's a big difference between Duma city itself and neighboring towns like Valencia and Dauin. Most people I know don't live right in Duma proper . That was not the draw for me to come here whatsoever. Many people visit here and don't see the appeal but they only hang around Duma city. There are so many great spots in the surrounding areas. Fyi Long term lease prices really vary, but for something on the decent to nicer end, a 1 or 2 bedroom condo or house could be around $350 usd-$650 usd per month plus electricity/internet/water (maybe $120 -$200 on top of rentl)
Your video is on point! The reasons you share about the attractions is why I will be settling somewhere in this area. Ease of transportation is huge whether you want to island hop or you want to get out of Dodge. I am currently leasing a 2/2 house in Bacong which is great as it is peaceful yet close enough to Duma for the major shopping. I saw your video when you were back in Canada about wanting to eat healthier once back. Want to have you over sometime in November as I have spent much time finding produce and protein options all over town, and developed healthy recipes influenced primarily from Thai, Korean and southern BBQ. Invitation is open!
Great Video Chad, this really helped me get my list of priorities straight. With your insight to the the rental market in Dumaguete and the distances from other towns,I now have a much better idea of what my life could be like in that area Thankyou!

Never been there but Duma's waterfront looks really nice, and something not typically seen in Philippine cities where waterfronts are usually occupied by commercial industries or squatter villages.
Chad is right about monthly. A bunch of hotels have monthly offers. p25,000 to p30,000 for hotels monthly. p30,000 monthly is good for two people, clean with electric, water, wifi and house cleaning included (around 25 to 32 sqf). When asking about monthly rates, remember to ask if wifi and electric is included (some are not included and can be expensive). Check to see if there is hot water lol. This takes about 2 or 3 days of walking around and asking for prices. A lot hotels in some areas are empty and will do really good monthly offers. A 6 month contract with a condo is around p15,000 to p20,000. Maybe p1,500 to p2,000 for wifi monthly. Make sure you don't have to get wifi yourself, it could be a 24 month contract. This is based on a small area of the Philippines. Prices range differently in different areas of the Philippines. The above prices has a concierge or is gated, condo, near the city and is near city shopping malls and super markets. If you decided to live the suburbs with out security, it can be a lot cheaper
Like your videos! Dumagette looks like a bunch of men Karens and everyone is a expert on the PH. I live in the PH for 2yrs and I might see 1 expat every two weeks if that in town. Did not come here to hang out with expats.
I live in Valencia and maybe see an expat Once a month in passing as it is ALL in where you hang out. Yeh; go to the local Bo's coffee shop or the Mall for extended time and maybe you might see them but like me they are Busy in their lives and maybe have a girlfriend or Filipino friends they are with so much of Dumas rep is BS pushed on here. Heck we had a serious accident for first time in 6 months haha.. Back in USA we had several all over in a days time and NO muggings or theft and rare to see any troubles. I settled here because I love the Peacefulness and NO Stress as Cebu and Manila are concrete jungles and staying in a condo i might have well been in the USA as you have Incredible Beauty and Scenery here
Chad I just got a place with my girl in Valencia that was an unbelievable steal, 8000 pesos a month, 2 bedroom nice place right off the square in Valencia. She works really close to there so it perfect for us. We looked for months and she came across it through her friend network, so you’re right take your time. I’m stateside now and coming back in November we should connect.
Wow. This is very a comprehensive and honest take on Dumaguete. No, it’s definitely not Manila nor Cebu. But it has its own charm And Yes. Hospitals in this country is either Hit or Miss. and if it’s a hit, it’s usually pricey So, in this country, prevention is absolutely better than cure.
I would check out Matnog area it’s got the port that takes you to Leyte and sorsogon is about an hour away. Beautiful beaches and near civilization. I’m keen on checking out Santa Magdelana.
I had a motorbike accident in Siquijor in February. I had to ride to Larena Hospital for X-rays and treatment. The hospital staff there didn’t seem very professional. The doctor showed me my X-ray on an old computer screen, but he couldn’t really tell what was wrong. He said I was lucky because it was only a muscle injury and gave me pain medicine before sending me home. I was staying in San Juan, and it hurt a lot. A week later, I went to Dumaguete City for a second opinion at a private clinic with foreign doctors. They took another X-ray, and it was clear as day that I had broken my wrist. The doctor put my wrist in a cast and said it would take 6-8 weeks to heal, but I might need surgery if it didn’t get better. I ended up needing surgery when I went back home to Canada in June. The lesson? Always go to big hospitals in major cities if you want better care!
Silliman is the oldest hospital in the Visayas. Some of my relatives in Mindanao went this School of Medicine because this is a good School of Medicine.
Hey Chad, i used to live in Cebu City but i am planning to check out Bohol.. i love clean, white sand beaches- which part(s) of Bohol are you referring to specifically ? Panglao or Anda or another part ? Thanks
@@JCinAsia panglao has white beaches but it's very built up, more expensive than other parts of the Philippines. I am from Germany and I always wondered, why so many Americans go to Dumaguete, like it is the only place in the Philippines. What is the secret of this place? After I watched your video, I think the surroundings are more attractive than the city.
Yeah you hit it bang on, the city itself is not what attracts me here. There are some positive aspects to the city but that's not at all what was the draw for me
Think Duma was in the magazine 'Forbes' and was listed as one of the top ten retirement destinations in the world. The vloggers don't help but that is why so many retire to Dumaguete.
@@gerhardhauptmann9939 Duma is a great hub for supermarkets, other bigger purchases as well as great access for transportation off the island. As you stated, you do not have to travel far to be out in natural surroundings. Going to Mass then walking across the street to the open square market makes for a memorable Sunday!
Hello, my German friend . Posable answers about Duma are Americans or used to having a geographically small city center with many small municipalities surrounding it, and only referring to the hole area by saying the name of the city center.
That's why so many people in the Philippines have respiratory issues everybody has that mentality burn baby burn every night where I live it seems like the whole barangay likes their fires at 5:30 and sometimes it's like fog you can hardly see yet nobody does anything about it

When you rent long term, what are the odds of getting your security deposit back? I'm guessing that money is pretty much gone the minute you hand it over.
Make sure you sign a contract when you rent in the 🇵🇭 The contract should say that you will get your deposit back. Of course you won’t get your deposit back when you trash the place.
I’ve been to Dumaguete for a week because we have planned of putting a fast craft for Oslob to Dumaguete City route. I like Dumaguete for having very few stop lights and yet traffic and vehicles accidents are that crazy. What I don’t like is the weather. It’s just way too hot for me. 🙂
Nice one Chad, love the footage. Please consider buying a cheap set of motorcycle summer gloves! One little oopsie can remove a lot of skin from hands. Summer ones are a cool mesh type material with some reinforcement/padding on the important bits.
Great video Chad... living in Dumaguete is all about lowering your standards as to what you are/were used in Toronto/Hamilton/Oshawa (Canada) corridor. Once you get used to AND ACCEPT Dumaguete’s air pollution, sounds, roosters, karaoke, barking dogs, burning trash, no sidewalks, skin tax, terrible food, non-existing customer service and locals scamming you as the day is long **THEN** and only **THEN** you might be able to adapt to Duma. .. it’s a great small city BUT only if you are willing to lower your standards.
Don't understand why ANYONE would want to live in a 3rd world country in BIGTIME POVERTY! I guess its all about hooking up with young girls that look like 6th graders!
Yeah way too much congestion in Duma city I don't spend much time there at all that was not my draw, it's all the surrounding areas where I spend all my time and love it 😎
41 years in the culture. Lived in Duma and left years ago. I could write a book as to why Duma is THE MOST over rated city in Pinas! There are WAY better cities and areas than Duma and area. Duma was never great but now with all expats it’s TOTALLY ruined. I could write a book on that alone. I moved to the best city in pinas and which is clearly Davao city and area but after visiting Thailand I simply had to bail from pinas altogether. Thailand is so much better than the Philippines in every single aspect especially housing. Thailand is definitely cheaper and you get way more for the dollar and so much nicer.
Try visiting in 2029 or thereabouts, coz according to the IMF our economy will be bigger than Thailand and be 2nd to Indonesia in ASEAN. By then, our new airport will be opened with 4 runways that can handle more flights and larger capacity planes landing simultaneously. This will surely help bring down airfares and hopefully attract more tourists. There's a lot of ongoing infrastructures in the pipeline slated for completion before 2030 all across the islands as well like the Metro Manila subway, Davao-Samal bridge etc.

I haven't been here in a typhoon, I'm high elevation so no concern for flooding I'm not sure about right down in Duma city proper. And no people just have to make sure they are out of flood zone and in a adequate building. Downside is if you are around for a really bad one in all likelihood you will be out of electricity for a while, no running water for a while things like that
@@ChadFosterExploresGuess your not aware of the flash floods that start in the higher elevations above Valencia. My wife lost a cousin to one a few years back.
Terrible dangerous driving conditions is the only negative I found during my 3 years in Duma and Valencia. Valencia is the way to go unless you need to be in Duma for work, college or medical reasons. I prefer Panglao btw. Great traffic conditions except for a 3 kilometer tourists area.
Yeah man it checks most of the boxes for me I love it. Duma itself is just too congested for me though a lot of people are finding places in the outskirts including Valencia and Dauin

Hey Chad, great video and I always appreciate your balance and objectivity. Very timely too as I will be heading to Dumaguete in late October or perhaps november. My fiance is from Vallehermoso, about 5 hours North and we have agreed on the Dumaguete area to live for a year or a year and a half. Hey that's great! Yeah it's all about finding the right fit for you and most people find living outside of Duma is the way to go. I will definitely be around so look forward to crossing path 😎
I live in Valencia. The number of out of control dogs, burning garden waste, plastic is killing my COPD. The cops are weak, they turn a blind eye to unlicenced school kids riding scooters. There is good and bad here , neverthe less I'm looking to get out
@@joelb099 Theres traffic but not like that and everything seems to move freely, there not riding bikes filipino style, more in straight lines as in a developed country. I couldnt handle the traffic like u see in most places where everyone is cutting one another off. It takes the enjoyment out of riding.
month to month... SOUNDS GOOD....but. so far the trend I am seeing (only arrived here in Sept 1st) is that landlords and building mgts seem to be "requiring" a 1 year lease. Luckily my Filipina companion did find a condo residence here in Quezon City and this owner required a 6 month lease. At this point since it is near to her work place we took it. Can't say for sure at this moment what will be when the 6 months is up here.
Speaking of medicine, I have a very painful spine disease and I take Morphine for the pain. Well I stayed longer in Manila than I expected and I ran out of medicine, so I went to see a "doctor" and asked him for morphine. He just laughed. So I asked him for Norco, and he laughed harder. I wish someone would have told me that there weren't any drugs stronger than Advil. And then I had to pay him.
Like you said to me Chad regarding the expats, they are there if you want to mix with them, and it's important to have some Western connections, but you don't need to mix with them if you don't want to!
What I like about Dmgte is if your in a hurry you can easily get a grab or taxi and you can go anywhere their lots of tall buildings Condos and buses and you can get a job anywhere they have lots of companies to work the best city
Hey Chad! Congrats on finding your new home in Dumaguete. I have been in Panglao for past 6 months but always love my visits to Dumaguete. I’m in your city now, any free time for a beer?
I didn’t want to be around a bunch of expats 😂 so Duma would be a last choice. Plus you guys pay more than those around the Cavite area where I live. We don’t drink or smoke. Our neighbors around us are just great people and we all socialize. It all comes down to choice. Market, stores, great hospital is few minutes away. Most places you could just walk if you wanted. 🎉
My biggest concern from what I've read about Philippine healthcare is this need to have a personal - what's the right word? - caretaker to interact with the hospital staff. And the hospital emphasis on "pay us" over patient care.
I'm currently vacationing in Siqijour, been here 10 days and love the place, however there are too many foreign tourists here for my liking, mainly Europeans and most of them just seem unfriendly and snobby or rude. It's disappointing, but I have made friends with some great locals while I've been here so I will return and could see myself living here in the future if it doesn't become too popular and expensive by then
Great points about the pros and cons of Dumaguete. If I wasn't married to someone with short apron strings, that's where I'd be living! Such an easier lifestyle than the big cities. Don't get me wrong, I love living in Telabastagan, Pampanga, but the Dumaguete area (Valencia, Bacong, Duma, etc) has a slower, more relaxed vibe to it. 🤔 I hope you can find a rental place, soon. Air B n B can get a bit expensive, after awhile. Even month-to-month rental is cheaper. Good video, Chad 👍
Hey thanks I appreciate it Jerry! Well you'll just have to visit here from time to time it'll be great to see you again hopefully soon! And of course whenever I come back to Manila we can catch up
@@ChadFosterExplores looking forward to seeing you again! I'm hoping to be back and visit with all of you in a couple of months (November?🤞). I actually saw you there at the mall when I stayed there for a month. You were with a girl or I would have stopped to say hello... anyway I hated it there. The traffic was crazy and I didn't see the appeal at all.
Yeah Duma the city itself is not the draw for me at all in fact I don't roll down the hill into the city center much it's all about the outskirts and knowing where all the great spots are. Valencia is a small neighboring town much more livable, dauin too.
@@ChadFosterExplores Ok I did make some friends there (even my landlords were SO nice to me) so I will be through there again. I did like the Valencia market every weekend. I'll check out the outskirt towns next visit maybe I will enjoy it more.
I think San Fernando, La Union is much better than Dumaguete City. The houses there are more colorful and well kept, hi-ways and side walks are better maintained. Close to Manila, close to Baguio.
Very good video! We'll be releasing a video soon about how I did everything wrong... HAHA... but it ended up being all right. :) Been here a year and live in Valencia... I too find it a perfect place for me personally.
I will be in for the 3rd time in the Phillipines next month and will check out Cebu and its areas particularly waterfalls down south but manily staying in province in Mindanao where is my home base so to speak.
I’m listening, but your riding vid reminded me how NUTS the traffic is there in Philippines . I ride in CGO area😩......crazy ,jeeps ,busses, vans ,and bikes going every direction. You have to have quick reaction time wen driving there 😂
Hey Chad, Paul interviewed the wife and me at our castle near Dumaguete. Maybe we can meet up we’re getting back there in November.29. We miss the place but not the traffic.😂
Yeah that would be great just stay in touch, my email is in the description, yeah I'm not a fan of the traffic and congestion right in Duma city but I don't spend much time down there. The surrounding areas are amazing!
I tried Dumaguete and further south in Dauin and Zamboanguita. Realized I didn't want to be around many expats and tourists. After 11 cities (in 4 months) in the Visayas and Mindanao, I have finally rented a condo long-term.
Hi Chad, nice video. Where did you "settle down" now? I know Valnecia very good, but now I did move to Dauin. If you want I invte you for a coffee here..
The way I have understood it is for 90 days you can just use your foreign drivers license I've had mine checked at road stops a few times no issue without a motorcycle endorsement on my license. However after 90 days of living here you are required to get a Phillipines drivers license and at that point you're going to have to get that motorcycle endorsement that's how it went for me.
I've tried a little bit of everything and in the end this is the right balance of things for me. It's not that I'm buying land and building a house here so we'll see how things go 😎
Yeah actually I spent a lot of time contemplating on that, it was between BGC and Duma area, well not Duma city itself I don't spend much time there but outskirts and there were just too many reasons why I wanted to come here over the big city and I definitely made the right choice for me. I love my nature escapes so much and I have access to everything I want with that here on the daily.

For very serious things, I might go to St. Lukes in Manila or do a small vacation in Thailand, what works out best for you
Keep going to Chung Hua, eventually you will find out hospital is completely incompetent....spent one nightmare nite there during Covid time....May God help if you ever have to eat there hospital food....it would not feed that to dog...
Great video. I totally agree with all you said. Valencia was my favorite place that I’ve seen thus far. I will still have many places to check out.
Thanks! Yeah Valencia is awesome, I don't spend much time in Duma city proper
Welcome back to the Philippines chad! Glad to know you’re back ❤️
I can’t talk for anyone else but I’m here on Bohol with my girlfriend for the next few months and I’ve delt with 2 hospitals ACE and Ramiro with issues ranging from my girlfriends Thyroid issues to her having very early stages of Pneumonia to my having a viral infection. While I’m certainly glad as hell I had her with me to help me navigate the system. I’ve have found it to be much better than I expected. Yes it’s old and a lot of equipment needs upgrading, but I have been really pleasantly surprise by the quality of the 3 doctors we’ve seen.
Dont get to happy, those Bohol dotors, nice folks can kill you quick depending on your health issue...
I guess you mean per MONTH? Good to clarify because many Aussies and Kiwis like me talk about WEEKLY costs
@@ozzymick1431 yeah my bad, I just added it, it's per month
@ChadFosterExplores
No worries mate.
I believe Valencia is one of the best places to live in the PH. Go for it. 👍
Great Video Chad, this really helped me get my list of priorities straight. With your insight to the the rental market in Dumaguete and the distances from other towns,I now have a much better idea of what my life could be like in that area Thankyou!
Chad I appreciate the quickie video tour... man do I miss biking around Duma. I am of the same opinion regarding the Duma area, ya really gotta have a bike to understand and enjoy all there is to offer their... well, a bike and a tour guide is super hepful as well. Good luck on your house hunt. I'm sure a friendly Vlogger such as yourself (with 50K subs- Yea) will have a super strong network to find the hook-up in no time. Keep the rubber side down. Hey as always I appreciate your comments man yeah it's good to be here! You know exactly what I'm getting at then, exploring on a scooter especially around here is incredible 😎
ACE Hospital is definitely a good hospital. I have personal experience with them. BTW my apartment is 11000php for 1 bedroom western style furnished apartment in Duma.
no hospital in the PI is good,,,i have been to hospitals in the PI, my friend got the wrong treatment, he almost died,,,THEY ARE NOT CLEAN AND THE STAFF ARE NOT TRAINED PROPERLY

Never been there but Duma's waterfront looks really nice, and something not typically seen in Philippine cities where waterfronts are usually occupied by commercial industries or squatter villages.
There is a housing area on south side of boardwalk that could qualify as squatter housing, I suppose.
There used to be a huge squatters area just outside the port entrance but they have cleaned that up really well and the new promenade.
Month to month is like a box of chocolates you never know what's inside.
I settled here because I love the Peacefulness and NO Stress as Cebu and Manila are concrete jungles and staying in a condo i might have well been in the USA as you have Incredible Beauty and Scenery here
I dont want to see XPATs altough I am an XPAT.....go figure...
Wow that's an amazing deal for Valencia! Loving Valencia… I'll be around stay in touch
@scottlang7025 WOW! That's a great deal! I'm in Duma close to Port Royal Resort - Paying 12000 a month, 1 bedroom.
Hey Chad. Good overview. Glad you found an "area" 😅 that works for you. I'll probably end up in Davao or Iloilo. Still to be determined.
Really enjoyed the scooter ride in this video! More please.
Wow. This is very a comprehensive and honest take on Dumaguete.
No, it’s definitely not Manila nor Cebu. But it has its own charm
And Yes. Hospitals in this country is either Hit or Miss. and if it’s a hit, it’s usually pricey
So, in this country, prevention is absolutely better than cure.
Yeah the longer I spend here the more I like it, I don't spend much time in Duma city itself. And I agree prevention is key out here!
I'm from Dumaguete and I love being there because I grew up on this island simple life that's all I want. Good luck to you.
There isn't a hospital in Larena.
How exactly can foreign doctors practice medicine in the Philippines? Maybe if they were dual citizen Filipinos or Fil-Chinese.
You're a bot.

Bohol is beautiful and has a lot to offer. Better beaches also.
I love it there too! it's a quick easy ferry ride from Duma over to Bohol for that fine white powder sand oh it's nice 😎
If you want lots of restaurants and a little nightlife you can get that at Alona Beach. Some people love the area some don't. Anda is nice there are some white beaches there too, much more quiet not so built-up.
I am from Germany and I always wondered, why so many Americans go to Dumaguete, like it is the only place in the Philippines.
What is the secret of this place? After I watched your video, I think the surroundings are more attractive than the city.
Probably cheaper
Once again no mention of air pollution. And Valencia trash and grass burning constant just hide that fact from elderly people 😊
Good point....
That's why so many people in the Philippines have respiratory issues everybody has that mentality burn baby burn every night where I live it seems like the whole barangay likes their fires at 5:30 and sometimes it's like fog you can hardly see yet nobody does anything about it

Chad, thank you for giving me the courage to step out of my comfort zone, through your videos. I greatly appreciate your time. I really appreciate your content and advice. Best wishes.
When you rent long term, what are the odds of getting your security deposit back? I'm guessing that money is pretty much gone the minute you hand it over.

I’ve been to Dumaguete for a week because we have planned of putting a fast craft for Oslob to Dumaguete City route.

There's a lot of ongoing infrastructures in the pipeline slated for completion before 2030 all across the islands as well like the Metro Manila subway, Davao-Samal bridge etc.

do you have to leave when typhoon season arrives? what's the flooding situation like in the area?
Very helpful topics Chad. You hit many of my comcerns and interests. Hiking, nature, gym, good food options....awesome.

I live in Valencia. The number of out of control dogs, burning garden waste, plastic is killing my COPD. The cops are weak, they turn a blind eye to unlicenced school kids riding scooters. There is good and bad here , neverthe less I'm looking to get out
I haven't been to Dumaguete a few times. There didn't seem to be much there. I much prefer Cebu City but it really depends on the person, of course.

month to month... SOUNDS GOOD....but. so far the trend I am seeing (only arrived here in Sept 1st) is that landlords and building mgts seem to be "requiring" a 1 year lease.

Dumaguete no way up in Valencia definitely a totally different place way better living up here😎
I didn’t want to be around a bunch of expats 😂 so Duma would be a last choice.
I think it's very wise to have a personal healthcare advocate someone well-versed in the healthcare system

You can rent motorcycle in Dumaguete.
Can you ride a small CC scooter with a regular license?
The way I have understood it is for 90 days you can just use your foreign drivers license I've had mine checked at road stops a few times no issue without a motorcycle endorsement on my license. However after 90 days of living here you are required to get a Phillipines drivers license and at that point you're going to have to get that motorcycle endorsement that's how it went for me.
Welcome back to the Phillipines Chad.
Are there any healthy food options in the Phillipines?
Yes but they are hard to come by and will be more expensive than the usual stuff.
Yes boiled pigs ears in blood, and pork liver marinated in soputz xakatnicks .
a year ago you were a die-hard condo in Cebu fan. What happened?😀
I've tried a little bit of everything and in the end this is the right balance of things for me. It's not that I'm buying land and building a house here so we'll see how things go 😎
Fellow Canadian here. Hey Chad, you said before you left the PH's for Canada you said you were going to try the Manila area when you came back?
Yeah actually I spent a lot of time contemplating on that, it was between BGC and Duma area, well not Duma city itself I don't spend much time there but outskirts and there were just too many reasons why I wanted to come here over the big city and I definitely made the right choice for me.
