Interesting video Gerry. I work on a slightly different model to yourself turning about 130 cattle per year - not a big operation but it works for me. I buy roughly 85% beef bred weanlings/15% reared dairy calves (all ave 275kg steers) and turn out to the mart at 550+kg for the finishing men to take on. Some are away after 6 months but I find that once i keep a beast more than 12months it doesn't pay me unless they were middling quality and came in very cheap
Do you buy in spring, turn out to grass and sell on in autumn. Or winter them? Also how do u find the dairy reared stock do for you in this system. Compared with the beef bred?
gerry6420 most of the beef bred are bought in september/october, put to grass and then wintered on ad lib silage and blend, then out to grass selling in june and august to october. Beef bred weanlings are also bought around late feb/early march. The smallest of these will be housed in autumn and fed for sale in january. Dairy bred cattle are purchased in april, put straight to grass plus blend and sold in november. I find the system suits the beef bred very well so long as they are properly weaned. Dairy bred stock thrive well put out to grass and are in reasonable shape by autumn but i try my best not to carry them over a winter. In my opinion, the lower weight gains i achieve cost too much by comparison
Hey fella happy new year.!!!! If you can, could you just comment very briefly, on the tragic and premature passing of our late great pal Willie Lynch from Co. Limerick. A great supporter of Irish Ag and Ag related work on RUclips. RIP. Thanks and keep em coming Ger. Maurice.( Gofish Maurice)
In the national news Ger, Very TRAGIC.... say no more... lovely lad. His videos were always top quality. Lynch Agri Videos....that's where you heard the name fella.
interesting video Gerry👍 we milk cows and beef the calves off them. plenty of work with them definately. our calves graze out paddocks well as theyre usually on the rented land and theyre heavily stocked. calves are easiest managed in large groups of 25 or so I find. we still top after every grazing and sow quickly. dear enough doing them the whole thing is rewarding seeing them grow. would love a livestock video specially of them calves there you're feeding. want to see them fr bulls. are they finished as bulls or steers? most holstein bulls not as square as them br friesians. thanks 👌🐄
AgriFan with out a doubt rewarding to see grow. Our biggest thing with them was the fact that we could have bought the reared animal last back end for the same money. Felt our time and effort was better spent else where. What size paddocks were u grazing the 25 on just out of curiosity. We will finish them as bulls
gerry6420 i see where you're coming from. around 2 acres roughly id say. then theres large fields too. course if we were doing everything right wed be using the leader follower system of grazing but that works nice on paper only 🤔
AgriFan i had 3 padocks with 3 acres each and 50 in the group. Could I get them to keep it ate down. Wasn’t so bad when got to July /August and growth slowed down. Was easier managed. Just the fact we could have bought in the 8-9 month animal as same price was but of kick in the teeth. But that could be just the year that was in it. The Weather ment sold extra cattle were sold at the time. And kept prices down. Next year could be completely different.
gerry6420 i know what you mean when you put in all the hours of work into suck calves and then you couldve bought weanlings in a mart for the same price. I know ours eat it down fairly well eventually because we're rimming it with them even in peak months. there's no eleminating topping with young calves because they are picky by nature in our case where they are supplemented in summer with plenty of concentrates we can leave them on paddocks for that bit longer.
AgriFan that all sounds same as our selves. We see. We might still rear some and then buy some. And compare. It's all trying to do the right thing. And what works this year might not work next year.
Good video Gerry. With all the cattle in the shed i wouldn't worry about a few air holes in the roof as long as it does not fall in on them.
Paddy Boy true....hasn't fully yet 😜
