WOW! This video took me a while to make, but not as long as this doll has been on my mind. I designed this Barbie over a year ago. WAYYY before I had a channel, although I wanted one, and WAYYYY before I made my first custom odile Barbie. When I designed her first, the odile dolls hadn’t been released other than a holiday doll, which I was going to recolor her to use for Malibu Barbie. Luckily Amazon is queen, and had just what I needed!!
I always knew, even after I made my first odile doll, I had to make the Malibu doll I drew about in 4 different sketchbooks. When I have an idea, I always like to go back to it and think of new things to add or subtract from the design. I usually design so much in a fashion sketch so that I have options for when I get to it, not that I exactly want it just like the sketch. And Malibu Barbie’s sketches were quite consistent. And she probably would’ve have been exactly like the sketches had I been able to find the perfect fabric I needed. Unfortunately, the fabric I needed was not available to me, so I had to get creative and figure out what I could use for my design.
I have to say, I love how she’s turned out. She will hold a special place next to my other dolls I designed.
I hope you all enjoy the process, jokes, excitement, and thought behind the doll and everything behind the scenes. This video and doll took a lot out of me, so I hope you don’t mind me taking a few days off to relax.

She is amazing 🤩 I love everything about her from face value to her hair , swimsuit and accessories. Those chain details are such perfect finishing touches. This is even better than Trina Turk’s re-imagination of Malibu Barbie. I love the Odile head sculpt and wished mattel substituted Millie with it. It’s so much cuter and interesting. I just wonder why can’t Mattel do things like this for collector level Barbie anymore. We had Top Model Resort and those were so nice. Not as perfect as this piece or art you created , but nice.

I couldn’t wait to get them and play with their outfits. I’m lucky to still have my OG doll. I’ve purchased replacements since. But to be compared with them is a dream so thank you!

I can’t get over how talented and knowledgeable you are Dakota! You’re like, the whole package 😄 You not only look like Barbie but are so creative, artistic and skilled in so many areas of doll restoration. Plus you sew too! 😄. That’s so fascinating to me that you don’t use glue when you reroot, and I’d like to try your method. Last year I boiled a Malibu Barbie head for just two minutes, bc I got gaping holes when the hair was removed. It worked to close the holes but it made it sooo hard to see the existing plugs had been 😑
Have you discussed restoring Kanekelon hair in any of your videos? I’m trying to restore a Totally hair Barbie and her hair needs help 😆🙈.

I am really happy and surprised about how to reroot without glue - true story, I just finished a reroot a day ago and the glue leaked everywhere! I have tried to wash it out but nope, so I am very happy to learn a better way. I am about to reroot 1973 Quick Curly Miss America with the Steffie face mold, (her hair is irreparable and has been cut), so I will use your method. Thanks again!
Aww I’m glad the video could help you!! It’s a process I do, and my hair stays in and it’s strong. You just have to use the right amount of hair in your strands! And then boil wash it down. The head reacts in a way and your hair on the inside gets set with the heat, and boom! Great reroot! I used glue in the past, and it got everywhere and started to seep out onto the vinyl, and that was awful! Let me know how it goes! I’m sure it’ll look fabulous!

You are super duper talented and patient!! She is such a gorgeous fresh delight from the original Malibu Barbie. I had Malibu Barbie, Ken, PJ and Skipper when I was a child. Although I don’t think they were technically called “Malibu” Barbie, I think they were called “Sun lovin” Barbie. They are the dolls that have the suntan lines. Although I loved them when I was young that “70s California girl next door” look doesn’t appeal to me now at all!!!! In fact as I’m trying to recreate my childhood collection I’m leaving them out in the sun ☀️!😂 I don’t want them lol!!!
That’s totally fair and I get that choice!! The more glamorous dolls were always my favorites! I remember you saying you had golden dream, and she too has a tan, but she’s glamorous.lol I would’ve picked her over Sun lovin Barbie and friends any day lol I feel like with the sun lovin dolls their gimmicks hinders them from looking good in some Barbie outfits that aren’t sporty. Well from an adults perspective. As a child we don’t really care about that much.lol

I was just looking at my Barbie collectors book last night which lists every Barbie in the order they released and said what a minute! The Barbie listed right before Malibu Barbie was looking forward! Why have I been lied to all this time?! Even Trixie Mattel said so, and I had no reason to not believe the Queen herself haha 🤣🤣
It is a pretty widespread rumor though, maybe you can help set things straight 😅
Someone said it in a documentary. A reporter who I don’t think collects Barbie, so they probably got a brief look at her and came up to those conclusions on their own. It’s just a simple case of rebrand to keep Barbie new and exciting to a younger new audience. In the 70s there was a lot of company politics going on, and I don’t think it trickled down in the doll department. Barbie to me has always been a feminist, so she doesn’t need to look at me for me to get the picture. But again, what a statement and when collectors tell me it’s true I’m like hold on lol let’s pick up a collector book

She turned out AMAZING, i love your message about making our own dream dolls instead of waiting for mattel to get their shit together (they never will) I'm currently boycotting mattel for political reasons i wont get into, so ive been trying to customize my own dolls too now, I've been using thrifted dolls and im currently learning how to sew. Your sewing skills are so clean and amazing, i hope i can get as good as sewing as you are with practice! same with face ups, i love your gorgous factory style face ups, well they look 10x better than factory, they're like high class factory. Sorry for all the spelling errors im about to go to bed, but i loved this video so much and i cant wait to see more customs!

The screenings that are hell on earth to remove are done with UV printing.
I mean good for them but my poor qtips. Lemme tell you I thought my acetone was going bad or something when I first did it.lol
