Oddly enough, i tend to regard most of these composers as belonging solidly in the late 19th century - Mahler, Puccini, Rachmaninoff - even Ravel and Debussy: their music fits very firmly with the "late Romantic" period, instead of the more dissonant, "experimental", aggressively non-traditional music of Schonberg, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Phillip Glass, etc. I AM happy that Morricone was included: he truly carved out his own path through the Forest of Music, doing things that nobody had done before - well, at least nowhere near as well as he did!!
Would it be correct to say that it was Stravinsky's work that started the 20th century revolution in music? I remember reading or being told that it was the onomatopeic parts of his music that lead musicians and composer to wonder "why when the orchestra mimics an animal sound it's music but the animal sound in itself isn't?". THanks!
tbh,i was searching for this for our activity in school, then suddenly when i saw no.3(jhon williams)i suddenly got hyped
Is that starwars?!!
@@allmusic962 what????
❤️❤️❤️Prokofiev. He’s super underrated.
Well, depends, in my opinion I think he's not that underrated among pianists that spend much of their time studying music, but if we talk about people that just like to hear music then yeah he is
My top 15 20th century composers (Born 1850+)
15: Richard Strauss (Also sprach Zarustrassa)
14: Jean Sibillius (Finlandia)
13: Béla bartók (Concerto for 2 pianos, Percussion and orchestra)
12: George Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue)
11: Aaron Copland (Fanfare for the commen men)
10: Giacomo Puccini (Nesson Dorma)
9: Arnold Schönberg (Verklarte Nachte)
8: Sergej Rachmaninoff (Piano concerto 2)
7: Maurice Ravel (Bolero)
6: Dmitri Shostakovich (Piano concerto 2)
5: Sergej Prokofiev (Romeo and Juliet - Dance of the knights)
4: John Williams (Star Wars - Main title)
3: Gustav Mahler (Symphony 5 adagietto)
2: Claude Debussy (prelude a l'apres midi d'un faune)
1: Igor Stravinsky (Le sacre du Printemps)
20th century means born maybe 1880-1999 not 1850 :(
Do u have a playlist of these?
Exept more then half are not from the 20th century
Khachaturian? One of the greatest 20th-century pieces was his Piano Concerto and Violin Concerto.
Of that list, Stravinsky and Prokofiev are among my absolute favorites from that century. Others that I feel should get honorable mention are: John Barry, Miklos Rozsa, Gustav Holst (Planets Suite arguably the most influential work of the 20th century), and Bernard Herrmann. Aaron Copland and George Gershwin were notable omissions, though...
Gershwin in particular: his body of work isn't vast like Stravinsky, but he and Copland transformed American classical music like no others.
Erik Satie must be on this list
Agree. Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra is a masterpiece. I like Barber and Ives too.
Gustav holst? Gershwin?
I agree with the pics , there were some composers that were missing and John Williams does " borrow " themes a lot from other classical composers but I liked how Rachmaninoff and Debussy were at the top of the list . I totally agree with that!
you know that every composer "borrows" from others
@@ODMXypher some more than other, john williams stars wars theme just seems bad to put on here compared to the rest
No.1-Prokofiev
Ligeti ? Copland ? Gershwin?
Prokofiev is the numero uno of XX-century. His Romeo and Juliet (Dance of Knights) is the ideal soundtrack to XX-century.
No Gershwin, Copland, or Bernstein? No Schoenberg, that Light unto the Nations? Oy vey, are you in drehrd, bubele!
But I bet Mahler's inclusion got you a bit uncomfortable, there. Next time you want to use Yiddish, maybe want to learn it a little better first. I could give you lessons if you need, and in music while we're at it.
WOW No Gershwin ? No Duke Ellington ? No Frank Zappa ? some VERY glarring ommisions
I think, your list is the best!
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nino Rota, Arvo Part, Arnold Schoenberg, Ahmad Jamal, Joe Hisaishi and Brian Eno were mentionable, too.
Thank you! This helped me a lot!
My list :
10- John Cage (Concerto for prepared piano)
9- Elliot Carter (String quartet n°3)
8- Helmut Lachenmann (Tanzsuite)
7- Anton Webern (Konzert)
6- Edgard Varèse (Amériques)
5- Karlheinz Stockhausen (Gruppen)
4- Arnold Schönberg (Violinkonzert)
3- Claude Debussy (Prélude à l’après-midi d’un Faune)
2- György Ligeti (Lontano)
1- Igor Stravinsky (Le Sacre du Printemps)
unobjective video, williams over shostakovich prokofiev and stravinsky? It seems like a joke
How would you measure it from an objective framework? What metrics would you judge by? I prefer them over Williams as well just curious as to what your reasoning is.
agreed, williams did much more stealing, and had no really innovative ideas, shostakovich had to live with stalin, and stravinsky revolutionised polyrhythms
@@largebill1245 There are some objective measures in music. There's this lie being spread all around the internet that art is subjective (I'd call it a half lie, but still).
I think the best metric is influence. Stravinsky was by far the most influential composer of the 20th century. He freed all composers of the rules they were told to follow with the revolutionary Rite of Spring, especially in regards to rhythm.
Although, Debussy and Ravel were doing that in the same spirit, but their works were conventionally beautiful.
Lastly, I don't think this list is meant to be objective. It's more of a "my top ten favorite composers of the 20th Century" sort of thing.
@@wyattwahlgren8883 Great comment
17th, 18th, 19th and 20th Century: Classic orcestral music
21th Century : hip hop, Rap etc
Idk what I need to think of this :S
Not really true. Back then in the 18th and 19th centuries for example, folk music was their pop music, not classical. Classical music has never been the most popular form of music. The folk music of those times is like the pop of our times.
My personnal top 10:
10: Ennio morricone
9: Stravinsky (petrushka)
8: Ravel (Ondine from gaspard de la nuit)
7: Holst (the planets)
6: Gershwin (rhapsody in blues)
5: Scriabin (his etudes)
4: Prokofiev (concerto 2)
3: Debussy (la mer)
2: Mahler (symphony 5)
1: John cage (4 min 33)
TRUE 1: Rachmaninoff (all the concertos)
John Williams and Ennio Morricone are placed ahead of Prokofiev? It's bad enough that Shostakovich and others are listed ahead of him, but as you said this is your opinion and you're entitled to it.
Even worse wheres Darth Vader's entrance theme?
You don't know all the work of Morricone, it's one of the best of the best
Morricone >>>John williams
This is extremely Eurocentric. I'd make the argument that Scott Joplin had far more influence on the future of music as a whole than anyone else on this list. Ragtime paved the way for jazz, blues, rock, rap, folk, hip hop, etc. Joplin did more in his brief life and career to influence the rest of the 20th century than anyone else on this list.
Mind you, Debussy is my personal favorite composer of all time.
John Williams is just a fucking genius
im using this for my project lol
Philgamer_ 309 same
No.100 Commnets :)
10) Sergei Prokofiev;I think he is okay, but only famous for his juliet ballet
9) Ennio Morricone; I mean,he is famous for cowboy stuff.
8) Dmitri Shostakovich;I mean,he's okay
7) Igor Stravinsky;he is fine
6) Gustav Mahler;too epic for my tastes
5) Maurice Ravel;too experienced
4) Giacomo Puccini dorma dumb
3) John Williams;star wars guy they say
2) Sergei Rachmaninoff;he is just one of those "famous composer pianists"
1) Claude Debussy;see Rachmaninoff
1. Claude Debussy
2. Ottorino Respighi
3. Igor Stravinsky
4. Gustav Holst
5. Jean Sibelius
6. Sergei Prokofiev
7. Lalo Schifrin
8. Olivier Messiaen
9. Ennio Morriconne
10. Isaac Albeniz (the 'Stache)
Its very silly to take Debussy to the first place. Schoenberg, or Stravinsky or Shostakovich, Bartók. They. Debussy is clearly a great composer, but that four gentleman undoubtedly made more for the evolution of the 20th century:)
my list consists of ENNIO MORRICONE, RAVEL, FAURE, ROTA, PUCCINI, VERDI, WILLIAMS, HORNER , these are the true composers of the 20th century. my all time favourite and he should be next to BEETHOVEN in the all time great is MORRICONE his music changed the western genre that solely in the u.s.
Williams and Prokofiev best
Rachmaninoff??? What about Sibelius, the best of the lot? At least you didn't include those 12 tone duds.
Where are Khachaturian and Sibelius?
Argo Part?
Leonard Bernstein? And bela bartok??
Hey, I really like classical and orchestral music. Therefore I just composed a track where I put a lot of effort in making the strings and choir sound realistic. I would love to get some feedback :)
All the best,
Jonas
It's nice that you combine Classic with contamporary music. I am composing music as well but i am always doing it in the classic way for an orchestra. I hope that we both become good composers and that mayby one of us becomes the new John Williams, Morricone, Zimmer or Herrmann. Good luck with composing man!
Haha I hope so too! Thank you I am really glad a musician like you appreciates my music :) I also really enjoyed you piano performance on your channel!
Thx man enjoy your composing and i hope you will opload a new composition soon :)
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘💯💯💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔊🔊🔊
While I like all of these number 2 is my favorite because it is featured in somewhere in time.
Where is Khachaturian's saber dance?
khachaturian and Bartok ?
Where is Gershwin?
bartok?
1:11 - Blur
I know y'all gonna hate me for this but I'm genuinely upset that this person chose Bolero out of all of Ravel's pieces to showcase him lol
It's his most well known piece. But yeah he could have picked Tzigane or smt
@@sofiaspiano7892 ikr? There are so many better ones and yet everyone is just like oMg bOLeRo sUcH a mAsTeRPiEcE
Kinda like whenever Rimsky-Korsakov is brought up, people always talk about flight of the bumblebee
@@FelineFlame-dj1xl yeah (sACriLEGiOuS) flight of the bUmBLeBEE. They never talk about his other pieces like Scheherazade
Make it the top 20, and we can be far more inclusive. But who actually listens to Schonberg and Berg anymore besides a few elites?
Ralph Vaughan Williams ?
Where is my beloved Alexander Scriabin?!
Pls
100% agree!!! Alexander Scriabin is better than many of the ones included in the video and of the mentioned in other comments. I would go farther in saying he is probaly among the most innovative and advanced in modern history.
8. "Waltz No. 2" = Pirates of Carribean's theme
The were a lot of ingenious composers in 20th century. I see Penderecki missed here
Where is Sibelius?
Mahler..that why vinnie colaiuta is such a good drummer...
John Williams lol! Should have replaced him with Rachaminoff. Not a good list at all. There are also many more.
Camille Saint Saens,......... ???
Yoyoy villame
Rachmaninoff
Where is ilayaraja?
scott joplin?
No. Not on this level.
Ennio>>>>>>>>>>>
Ejem....
As much as I love Mahler, I cannot have any musical respect for the taste of someone who includes copycat movie composers like Morricone and John Williams among top composers but omits Sibelius, Vaughn Williams and Aaron Copeland!
your taste is admirable and its your taste even though your taste is questionable, my question is where do you see morricone and williams copycats, they are the original of the best composers i know. morricones music is even used as dial tone on phones and he is so popular with soundtracks as THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY, and also THE MISSION which is my all time favourite piece.
Alexander Nevsky
Where is Jimmy Page?
Could you tell me what classical piece is playing in the background of this video section, or maybe the composer? ruclips.net/video/EhveCbAuvF0/видео.html It continues @ ruclips.net/video/EhveCbAuvF0/видео.html. I love the background music.
ZAPPA
Hindemith? Bartok?
James newton howard
You forgot to include Pandit Ravi Shankar, Sidney Bichet, and Louis Armstrong in this video. They were probably three of the most talented musicians in the 20th century.
Phillip glass
And Richard Strauss? :c
Howard shore
My favourite John Williams is from "the Patriot."
WHERE IS CHOPIN!!!
This is joke
He is in Romantic Period of classical music. We have 5 Period of Classical Music they are: 1- Renaissance Period 2- Baroque Period 3- Classical Period 4- Romantic Period, and 5- Modern Period
@@alemelvera you forgot medieval period
0. Erik Satie
Somebody is Star Wars fan.......
But seriously putting John William in the same class as Debussy is a joke. Debussy is a pioneer, John Williams is n t quite that. He wrote many top box office Hollywood films but he is not the first writing movie score. He just wrote scores for the best movie producers: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.
Somehow listening to Maurice Ravel makes me feel uncomfortable. I like Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Vivaldi (I get it they're not from the same century) Rachmaninoff - I like him but I just dont know why I couldnt appreciate Bolero
Fairwin Askara It's because this was the century of musical experimentation, Ravel experimented with Jazz and other genres. I personally don't like Stravinsky but it's because he experimented with different styles and innovations that inspired a lot of music today.
Why do people people only think of Bolero when they think of Maurice Ravel? He has composed so many other pieces worth mentioning! Une Barque sur l'océan, Daphnis et Chloé, and Le tombeau de Couperin to name a few.
Morricone better than Prokofiev wtff
My number one is CHARLIE CHAPLIN
How about Andrew Lloyd Webber?
Where is Philip Glass!?!?!? Akhnaten, Einstein on the Beach... etc..
He's in the 21st century list.
Max surban
John Williams is a soundtrack composer, good but neither better than Puccini, prokofiev or sostakovic. Is an heresy.
And however morricone is not better than procofiev but better than Williams.
In my opinion Rachmaninoff is 1st. Rachmaninoff IS KING !
8:05
STAR WARS :) 😂
You can see starwars on that masterpiece but i dont, because i appreciate this work of him
Mudule solved
The best was Giacomo Puccini.
There is no Best. Just art.
OMG,this bit creepy
Where's Schoenberg and Bartok? Primarily the list serves as a admission of ignorance.
Nino rota is large better than morricone or Williams.
Why do people Like Shastikovich so much???
why would we not like him? He composed a lot of great pieces.
Because he composed great pieces
#9 sounds like Metallica
It's because they did a cover
Jay Rich . Which song? The Unforgiven?
Ecstasy of gold
Sai Teja . Huh, come to think of it, I don't think I'd heard Ecstasy of Gold until this video. I've listened to a lot of Metallica, and even then I still haven't listened to their version of it yet. It does sound a lot like the Unforgiven too.
SeanTheCajun You must have shit in your ears, because that sounds nothing like, "Unforgiven".
how could you possibly missed CHOPIN!!!!!!!
Serious lack of english composers
i would leave out williams and mahler..both are much overblown
Idk I think dr Dre better
Morricone is a laugh in this list, he a pop film composer. Same for John Williams. Where is Vaughan Williams, Nielsen, Bartok, Schoenberg, Berg. Barber, Copland. Your list is s joke. I am ashamed of this stupidity.
The title is 'top composers'. They are not limited to classical music. So where is : Andrew Lloyd Webber?
He is not even a footnote
Now I understand why people say classical music is elitist.
There's only one Gustav, and it aint Mahler!!!!!!
21st century music lolololololololol
IS A JOKE
