    Oddly enough, i tend to regard most of these composers as belonging solidly in the late 19th century - Mahler, Puccini, Rachmaninoff - even Ravel and Debussy: their music fits very firmly with the "late Romantic" period, instead of the more dissonant, "experimental", aggressively non-traditional music of Schonberg, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Phillip Glass, etc. I AM happy that Morricone was included: he truly carved out his own path through the Forest of Music, doing things that nobody had done before - well, at least nowhere near as well as he did!!

      Would it be correct to say that it was Stravinsky's work that started the 20th century revolution in music? I remember reading or being told that it was the onomatopeic parts of his music that lead musicians and composer to wonder "why when the orchestra mimics an animal sound it's music but the animal sound in itself isn't?". THanks!

    Of that list, Stravinsky and Prokofiev are among my absolute favorites from that century. Others that I feel should get honorable mention are: John Barry, Miklos Rozsa, Gustav Holst (Planets Suite arguably the most influential work of the 20th century), and Bernard Herrmann. Aaron Copland and George Gershwin were notable omissions, though...

      @chrisbillings7233 3 года назад

      agreed, williams did much more stealing, and had no really innovative ideas, shostakovich had to live with stalin, and stravinsky revolutionised polyrhythms

    • @wyattwahlgren8883
      @wyattwahlgren8883 2 года назад +1

      @@largebill1245 There are some objective measures in music. There's this lie being spread all around the internet that art is subjective (I'd call it a half lie, but still).
      I think the best metric is influence. Stravinsky was by far the most influential composer of the 20th century. He freed all composers of the rules they were told to follow with the revolutionary Rite of Spring, especially in regards to rhythm.
      Although, Debussy and Ravel were doing that in the same spirit, but their works were conventionally beautiful.
      Lastly, I don't think this list is meant to be objective. It's more of a "my top ten favorite composers of the 20th Century" sort of thing.

      Not really true. Back then in the 18th and 19th centuries for example, folk music was their pop music, not classical. Classical music has never been the most popular form of music. The folk music of those times is like the pop of our times.

    John Williams is a soundtrack composer, good but neither better than Puccini, prokofiev or sostakovic. Is an heresy.
    And however morricone is not better than procofiev but better than Williams.

    Where's Schoenberg and Bartok? Primarily the list serves as a admission of ignorance.

      Sai Teja . Huh, come to think of it, I don't think I'd heard Ecstasy of Gold until this video. I've listened to a lot of Metallica, and even then I still haven't listened to their version of it yet. It does sound a lot like the Unforgiven too.

    Morricone is a laugh in this list, he a pop film composer. Same for John Williams. Where is Vaughan Williams, Nielsen, Bartok, Schoenberg, Berg. Barber, Copland. Your list is s joke. I am ashamed of this stupidity.
