Honestly, I prefer when the things that go wrong get shown. That's real life, it doesn't always go smoothly. Finding and solving problems is more satisfying than everything just working off the bat.
Yes, and it also helps to differentiate from the hundreds of fake restoration videos there are all over RUclips. People need to wise up about those videos, but I think it is partly what causes people to fall for scams: they want to believe in it.
Not to mention that sometimes that may just be the thing that someone else has been trying to fix without luck, and both parties can try to put their heads together to figure out what's wrong, or one of them figures it out and the other one can use that to fix their problem
this is pt. 3 and the video went out yesterday. he is probably already working on pt.4, where he shows how Holy fix the problem on Tuesday. or just watch the whole thing.
It is stylised television format. Production quality is very high. They can actually sell their series to television. For that reason bloopers are cut out. Check out Adrian Basement for real life troubleshooting retro gaming, check out Retro Ralph chasing Nostalgia series and 6th part how they winged it. Life is all about getting up again.
The side art installation process was made much easier by having the textured black layer beneath it - the texturing allows for air release and low initial tack so you can just push any air bubbles out or peel off and reposition if it's not straight - so worth serious consideration over painting on these types of restorations. I would imagine for full-sized artworks it would be a godsend. The only sacrifice is some loss of adhesive strength so it might not be suitable for all types of decal - however in a cozy Cave with minimal contact to the sides it should be absolutely fine. Great fun being involved and I can't wait to see the final result!
Yes, it's important to show the losses as well as the wins. I'm sure I speak to many of the fans of the channel when I say, that a lot of us are enthusiasts of tech in one way or another with numerous hobbies involving repairs and restoration, and it's important and reassuring that it's not just us amateurs who face challenges when repairing things. I think it's often more rewarding watching the problem-solving process.
I just found your channel yesterday and immediately subscribed. This content is so soothing! I argue all the time how important preserving old media is and it’s a shame that only recently have video games been given the same historical preservation priority as other forms of media.
\o/ I'm in Milton Keynes. Nice to hear you travelling over to our neck of the woods. So glad to see these old systems being restored and kept alive for future generations.
I love how its turning out. Pretty sure you guys give it more attention to detail and its probably higher quality than it came out of the factory with. Keep it up.
After a pretty taxing day at work, this was the perfect antidote. Cleaning montage, the insides of a few CRT's and the soothing tones of your voice. Excellent stuff!
Another excellent episode. It is so satisfying to watch enthusiastic experts do their thing. I am interested to see the continuation of the monitor saga.
Actually checked in earlier today hoping for another video on the Mega Tech but sadly I was too early! This series has been a real pleasure for me, I was never really an arcader, but the Mega Tech was something I played a lot during trips to the Lake District. Spent many hours playing Golden Axe and World Cup Soccer on it. Honestly its been a joy seeing you trying to put this together.
This show is like a better version of Wheeler Dealers! The benefit of the monitor fault is that we hopefully get to see even more of this great series. The cosmetic work on the cabinet is really looking fantastic. Great job everyone.
for the blue-only on monitor try to first swap the 3 colors at input, if doesnt change try swapping them at the neckboard input, if still blue only, then swap at guns input. green and red are either shorted to ground *before* amp or amp is busted and they're shorted to 200v supply (or whatever video amp voltage is)
@@fredcooper2063 The smashed base base board is on the smaller 10" monitor for the top of the machine. The 20" monitor is the one that's only displaying blue.
For hard to remove adhesive residue, in the future, see if you can get hold of and try eucalyptus oil. I learned about it as a teenage retail worker decades ago and now always have some on hand for cleaning. It's great for cleaning up video store game cartridges too, just be careful with the glue you want to keep for the factory stickers
Really satisfying watching Dan fit that vinyl and artwork, and it's great that you were able to use some of that rubber tape stuff from Archer Maclean on the edges.
The phosphor damage is from both the rush of air hitting the front and the particles of broken glass that it took along for the ride. The layer is very thin and delicate.
Went from something you'd catch an Ancient Egyptian plague from and now it looks fantastic. Well done Neil and crew! Im sure the screens will get sorted, you have some very talented members there.
Having had unexpected problems come up during my own repair/restore projects, I appreciate seeing that sort of thing come up in your videos. Looking forward to the next one, love these videos!
I never thought about putting 3m car wrap on the sides and putting the art on top of that. I have seen people put counter top laminate which looks like a pain. How does the side art look? Can you see the imperfections of the wood sides through the car wrap?
you guys are doing a great job restoring this beauty piece of game art, i hope you can fix the problems with the CRT monitors and enjoy playing again those sega classics in original hardware.
Great to see this big of Sega history rebuilt - Back in the day I have to admit to giving this a wide berth as I already had a mega-drive at the time i really didn't see the point! :)
Work and effort always pays back and usually the payment is much more important than money. It is not always the finished result's satisfaction the greatest payment but many times it is the knowledge and the great people you meet and work with through the process that is the greatest gain! Excellent work that cabinet look almost better than new with those modern technology stickers and a profesional's experience on the subject, I am certain you will overcome all troubles, cheers to all of you there from Greece, keep up, Jim
I was actually enjoying my dinner as I was watching you clean all that ancient DNA off the cab! 😄But still a very enjoyable video! Excellent work restoring this old digital treasure!
Honestly, this arcade unit genuinely went from looking like it was destined to be dismantled and destroyed to looking so beautiful and like a work of art 😊 hoping you'll get the crt colours all up and running, and hope it will have a long and much gentler life ahead of it!
there's several videos of content just exploring broken CRT's and showing what each bit actually is/how it in theory works, down right fascinating stuff!
The definition of labour of love!!! Incredible work!!! (curious to know how much this whole repair will actually cost after all replacement parts are in, and all these incredible professionals have finished playing their role on this project)
this was such a cool restoration but AHHHH the blue disaster x_x hopefully it will be able to be fixed, thank you for documenting this cool restoration!
Love all your content, Neil! The production of this series is giving me This Old House vibes. And that's a good thing. (Kept expecting "a let's check in on Norm" 😂). Dunno if that series came to the UK, but was quite popular in the States.
Amazing that the designers didn't use any kind of screen saver to avoid the top screen burn-in. I guess they foolishly didnt figure that some guy was going to be trying to use it again in an arcade museum in space year 2024.
Ironically you said take a flame thrower to the metal part where the controlls were but if you had heated the sticker up first and pulled it would have taken alot of the glue with it. Also glue remover exists and is super effective with a plastic scraper.
Nope, not with 30+ year old glue - we actually did try heating it quite significantly with a heat gun and there was a layer that was completely hardened and was not coming off regardless of what we tried. Paint thinners was the answer, dissolved it right off.

Was about to post the same thing. I'm sure it'll get resolved, certainly the right people are involved to have the best chance of fixing it!
Not to mention that sometimes that may just be the thing that someone else has been trying to fix without luck, and both parties can try to put their heads together to figure out what's wrong, or one of them figures it out and the other one can use that to fix their problem

Great work!!!
Dan is probably living the dream life with his business, gets to work on cool cars and cool arcade/retro gaming stuff!
It's hard work but getting to do stuff you're passionate about is incredibly satisfying!
Totally agree. Loved watching him apply the vinyls.

More than happy to drive over to help lug heavy stuff around chaps if you need it - I'm about 30 minutes drive and willing to help out!!
Thanks Gary! You should pop over to discord.gg/RMCretro and say hi to everyone
That vinyl installation was extremely satisfying to watch. I could watch Dan do this all day.
Haha!
I guess he could sell spectator tickets for his day job. Extra income opportunity.
I just found your channel yesterday and immediately subscribed. This content is so soothing! I argue all the time how important preserving old media is and it’s a shame that only recently have video games been given the same historical preservation priority as other forms of media.
Thanks James and welcome aboard. We’re trying our best to preserve and share as much of this history as we can! Every view helps in this mission 🙏
You have a lot to catch up on!
It's amazing how a drone shot can make a video look pro like an actual tv show.
I died laughing when he tripped too
I can't believe how clean the vinyl artwork looks, amazing
this was a great episode! Dan really knows his stuff, proper good job on those decals!
That shot inside the busted CRT's neck is REALLY cool! I appreciate the cinematography.
Beautiful restoration work!
I was amazed at the incredible repair job Holly did on the broken neck PCB. It was so straight and clean.

Great choice with the vinyl on the sides that looks incredible.
Wow, that has come along wonderfully!!! Amazing work on the restore of the cabinet and application of the vinyl!
Seeing the vinyl come on was so satisfying to watch. Can't wait for the next episode :)
2:54 - did you actually trip over the step, or are you just a very good actor? 😂
🙃
Linus Cave Tips
@@TheRetroCollective i was about to compliment the nice drone footage shot and then was even happier it existed🤣
That vinyl artwork is incredible!
Also, it's genuinely a good thing when you show that things don't always work out. That's the reality of retro. 😂
I love how its turning out. Pretty sure you guys give it more attention to detail and its probably higher quality than it came out of the factory with. Keep it up.
Excellent work Neil... as always. This thing will be fully up and running soon enough.
The restoration expertise on display is fascinating. Amazing work. Very interesting!
I would happily watch Neil, Dan and Holly work for hours
I just love classic SEGA, and seeing the Megatech restoration has earned you a subscriber.

Great production values guys- loving the music, drone shots, sequencing: huge step up, keep up the hard work!🎉
Thank you! Always trying to improve things where possible
You had to include that part of you tripping there 🤣, the shot was so epic until that part. Nice one!
It was too majestic for this channel. Something had to be done
Thanks for restoring this game. It's amazing how many of these games end up in landfills. So thanks for saving history

the "donned his 90s rave gloves" line got a laugh out of me.
Cabinet looking good, congrats.
Those decals look fantastic!
Another brilliant video, thanks to all.

Great to see someone out there restoring old SEGA tech 👍👌
This looks like fun. I really like it. Restoring the old arcade games is preserving our history.
The background music around 13:30 made me think I was watching an old Lemmino video. 🤣

20:03 Sweet John's Arcade shirt, I loved his videos back in the day!
Superglue or better to say "Super Glue" is a trade name for a Cyanoacrylate glue that became subtantivized for those type of glues.
Super glue was originally designed for medical purposes instead of sutures/stitches and is still used today
Lets have a adhesives facts thread
