  • There are those scale models out there that really grab some attention and even the keen eye of John Holmes. When the ROCHobby MB Scaler roller out, it caught that eye. John has picked up not one, but two new MB Scalers. One to hold onto as it brings back some good memories for him and one to hit the rocks with and even upgrade. In this video, John gives you one of his special overviews of this realitively new kit and takes it for a drive on the Holmes Hobbies rock course. Will this Toy like RC truck with hobby grade internals fair well? Or will it be carried back with parts dangling off of it? Check out our review of the ROC Hobby 1/6-scale MB Scaler!

    Changed the oil in the shocks to 25wt silicone shock oil with green slime on the orings for super smooth shock action droped a sway bar in the back and greased all the internals. It's a solid scale rig for sure.

    BTW: Windshield snaps in and stays in place...
    BTW: Most people/many people run it on 3cell without any problems.

I like the carrying case as well, and it fits nicely in aircraft overhead bins for traveling. I’ll most likely upgrade the receiver/esc with the same type that’s in my Axial SCX10III. Very happy with this purchase.

    Hey JRH, i got this same rig. My axles and housings were not even usable, didnt even get to drive it more than 2 inches before the axle bound so bad it just locked up. One side had bushings, the other had 1 bearing. The servo only turned right as the stop pin was clocked wrong at the factory... due to both of those... the esc caught fire due to excessive load on 2s. So kept the rails, and went to town.. Puller Pro BL 540 2200kv, Mamba Max Pro...running it on 4s.....then Protek S150 Ultra Torque, Incision links, Jato rod ends, Lizard Internal spring shocks and SCX10 TFL Racing all metal axle housings with hardened axles and cvds. Installed china's finest flashing light kit and a cheese sound kit, had 2 speakers, unplugged one.. cut the speaker box in 1/2 and mounted the speaker under the back seat, sound controller next to the steering servo.... savox mg micro steering wheel servo.. Vanquish 1.9 Methods, hyrax..... then found 12" Gi Joe wearing a freaking Covid Mask!!!!!! hahahahaha its pretty much my go to and will climb anything until i put the stock wheels back on... might as well have train wheels on pencils LOL

    As for the Grill, its a 9 slot as the original Willy’s MB from 1941 - 1945 had a 9 slot grill (that was actually designed by Ford when they built their GPW). There are several videos that compare this RC Jeep with a real Willys from that era, and the similarities are amazing. ROCHOBBY really did a fantastic job with this model.

    The grill never had Jeep on it These were originally build by Willy's, though also by Ford Chevy and Dodge also built them during WW2. The grill is perfect because it's stock, my dad had one for many years and never once did i ever see one with jeep on the grill. Matter of fact Jeep was the nickname of these vehicles, because M38 was too long to say (one syllable VS 3 syllables). Also the Popeye cartoons, with the Jeep creature was popular at the time. Since these were also miracle workers in the field, they inherited the name. it wasn't till some time after WW2 (Possibly the early 50's) that the name jeep was officially given. My dad owned a real M38 and it was a very cool rig, Flathead 4 3 speed, I actually learned to drive in that jeep

    The Dragon figures are kind of expensive, but if you're going military it may work out for you. I've found that the clothing for the figures can be the most expensive part! To build a civilian, you can get a body for $10-$20 and a "celebrity"head for $35-$40.

    "I bought two because I was worried I will break something." Had the exact same thought process when I got the HG-P408. Knew I would break something when I went to modify it, so I bought a second one just to have a stock version. I may or may not have put a traxxas 400 servo in both :D but the one I really modded heavily is kinda disgusting once I broke like 100 different things and worked out all the kinks.

  • @nukedathlonman
    @nukedathlonman 3 года назад +1

    That's awesome. Perhaps a little too scale for my liking (from a clearance stand point). This one def needs a driver. The servo is clearly under powered (I'm sure you'll take care of that though). And the links def seem like another weak point, at least when they get stripped out (I saw the front axle rotate a quite a few times under power - but given it was already stripped out..). I am impressed with those tires - I didn't think they'd grip as well as they did. The windshield flopping around I wouldn't be happy with. For me, I think I need a little less scale and more performance orientation.

    Nice review! Very cool Jeep! Does it have 12mm hexes on the wheels so you can use other wheels?
    Also I would get one of those cheap “Click and Play” military figures off Amazon. Reason is the cheap figures tend to be lighter, more cost effective than ones made by Higher end companies and the joints more than likely are looser. You would want loose elbow joints/arms that can rotate in and outward so you can fasten the hands to the steering wheel and then the loose arm joints won’t hinder the movement of the steering wheel. If they are tight you can use an exact o knife to split the joint open or shave the joint to make it looser.
    These 12” figures sell between $18-$28 I think on amazon and have scale accessories you can use on the Jeep. Some even have little packs of cigarettes you can glue on top of the dash. As someone else mention you can swap out the heads and get one from eBay like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jason Stratham, etc.

  • @1944GPW
    @1944GPW 2 года назад

    Thanks for the great review. Having a 12-inch-to-the-foot scale one, I can see this model is pretty darn good on a lot of scale features. Apart from the obvious addition of a driver, there are some bits that could be improved: the seat base cushion height is too high, I'd go half the thickness. It looks like the cushions are canvas covered? Second the front grille wedges are a bit too prominent, and the Blackout light should be mostly covered. In reality they shine hardly any light, only a thin horizontal band enough to illuminate the vehicle in front when in convoy. The windshield catches could be added. The spare tire carrier on the real jeep is a folded metal bracket, the tire held with 3 bolts: early/mid war, or 2 bolts: late war, no hub is present. Maybe add a radio filter box on the inside passenger side and the four bolts on the outside. The decontaminator unit on the right fender could be painted a grey-blue color.
    I'd say that's about all I'd do with it, seeing it's such a nice model right out the box.
