I think every race car should be hand letterd looks way better than A regular wrap and A hand letterd race car looks good when it's on the race track 😍😍😍
We sign painters are a dying breed. People are going to vinyl lettering now because when they tear a panel up, its a lot easier to replace it with vinyl lettering and cheaper too!
This is so unbelievably cool. I've completely rebuilt my literal "barn-found" 65 mustang over the past year and a half and I think learning how to hand-letter is my final step. It'll take a lifetime to get that solid but this is amazing.
Second best day of the new season, first firing the motor for the first time second the day that DELCO Signs (Dave) would show up to hand letter our race car. Sign painting is a dying art I miss the hand lettered cars. Take care guys and stay safe.
I've been lettering for years, I just like to watch other artists techniques. This man has got a great style. I learned from a man similar to him, Mr. George Strickland from Laurens, SC.
How were you able to get him to teach you? I'm also getting into hand lettering. I'm from Kershaw, SC. It's pretty cool to see that there is people around me that do hand lettering.
@@MYartiisMuRdEr Mr. Strickland wouldn't actually teach me, I used to watch him and copy what he did. His son, Little George, showed me the ins and outs and the different brushes for sign work. I prefer squirrel hair brushes, but I can letter with most any of them. It's a dying art, so glad to know it's still going right now. I also got into air brushing a few years back.
I'm amazed ... I worked after the Army, I took a job with DOD and ended up head of the sheet metal dept... I hand painted all the signage... I was spoiled, climate control massive work shop. Move to Australia in 1979 and worked in some truck yards, hot over 90 degrees ... tons of linseed oil to slow down the enamel... wraps use none pigmented inks ...short life and the vinyl lasts at best 7 years... One shot last longer...
That’s old school cool. I’ve seen a couple of guys hand letter cars, but the best I seen was Roby Combs in Shelby NC.I watched him do a friends car back in the 80’s and he did that car as fast as you could put the vinyl on. Our car was done in vinyl be Randy Powell in Lincolnton, he does a lot of the local cars here. I definitely love the old school look
This guy is really good👍. I too have been doing pinstriping, graphics, airbrush, lettering for 28 years. I keep hearing its a lost art form, and to some extent there right. However 2021 has been my busiest year ever. Paint on!
I’m looking to get into this line of work. I have body work down, wrapping, and painting. But I can’t figure out what paint is best for hand painting a car like this. Would you happen to know?
Absolutely incredible 👌 old school lettering and pinstriping is a dying thing with all this new vinyl which is such a shame. Truly talented and amazing job!!!
I wondered what brush Thom would have used for the loose script such as team names etc? A link to supplier would be great if any signwriter sees this comment.....Thank you for help and inspiration.
A lost art. Not too many cars are done that way anymore. Only a handful I know of on the east coast. The wraps look nice but I can tell you from working at my local track in the timing tower, some of the wraps are hard to make out. Sometimes, plainer is better. Car looks awesome! Its more of a shame when the hand lettered cars get torn up.
What paint adheres best to car exteriors? I need a paint that holds it's color without fading and stays very hard even before clear coating. Any preferences?
We had a guy in cannada when my dad was stationed air force up there and we owned and bought Northway speedway it's a 1/4 mile asphalt track my moms car and all the others was hand painted and lettered like this qe spray gun the paint then call the hand letter guy come over and paint the letters and numbers they looked so sharp and good bright Shiney custom deep gloss paint job qith glossy deep color hand lettered numbers and letters the cars looked so good. Je had been hand lettering since the 60s signs rqcecars and all he did it when we was there on her cars that was in 2001 to 2004 till we moved here and the asphalt mustang mini stock my dad built me before we moved back to Alabama he had the guy hand letter it as well and the paint was so shiny on the body was like glass and the hand paint letters everyone when I showed up for my first race in 2005 at age of 10 ppl came to my pit drowling over how pretty my racecar was. If you get a really deep pro custom glossy paint job and a really good hand letter job it will turn heads I promise we had some of the most beautiful looking v8 superstores at that track then anywhere else our track was known for beautiful paint jobs hand lettered beautifull cars that shined and raced under the sun om every Sunday starting at 11 am it was so much fun I got to run a few races there came here with no practice in my mini stock and first race and lapped whole field and won that night. I have had almost all my racecars hand lettered like this looks so much better under the lights as well. Yalls car looks awsome forst time in a long time I seen a hand lettered dirt car ever its all vinyl except when I ran my first ever dirt race 3 years ago my street stock is all hand lettered and love it looks so bright and shiny at night under the lights and of course I got a 10 layer clear coat on it wet sanded and buffed and hand letter job was also clear coated under the ten coats key to get the letters to last long is lay down base color hand letter the clear coat whole car with a bunch of layers the.n every few weeks or so wet sand and buff the letters and numbers and they will look brand new qith no scrapes mud scratches as long as it didn't go past all the layers of clear It's just the look you can't get with vinyl like the shadowing that he does only hand painting can you get it to look like that vinyl don't have the look I love hand painted racecars I have mine hand painted twice a year and new body twice a season as well if it gets really bad
I love seeing hand lettered racecars, they're awesome. Though from this video he does seem a little bit sloppy on a few places. It could be the camera angle showing it a bit weird than in person. Personally I think the numbers are way to small and narrow, locally ours are required to be a little taller and a bunch wider.
Hey everyone I am the proud mama of this painter he is awesome at work and anywhere you see him I love him to the moon and back his mom Hattie Polston
I’m glad you raised such a wonder man!
Will he travel to Chicago to do a car?
Good on ya Mum! 👍
Damn you must be older than the hills
Good job Momma! You raised an artist. He's really good!

Great job Tom. “A lefty like me”
Wow awesome job. You don’t see hand painted racecars anymore and this 75 car looks really good. Good luck this year Andrew and James 🏁
We sign painters are a dying breed. People are going to vinyl lettering now because when they tear a panel up, its a lot easier to replace it with vinyl lettering and cheaper too!
Definitely alot better looking than a wrap! Nothing like an old-school PAINT Job #SaveTheDyingArts

Had he ever been to palm beach speedway in flor there was a guy who would come to the track to do this before wraps an decals
That's Awesome
It looks like he did this whole car with one brush. Would love to know what brush he was using.
How do you race with a body that beautiful!?!?
I've seen my uncle's late model get hand painted in the 80 s. This guy is good. 😂.
I wondered what brush Thom would have used for the loose script such as team names etc? A link to supplier would be great if any signwriter sees this comment.....Thank you for help and inspiration.
Sick SSZ
That’s rad! What type of paint is he using?

Nice👍👍👍👍👍👍

How did he make that stencil so big, did he trace the letters on a projector?
Man thats old school, looks really good. What kind of paint works best?
How does the cost of a wrap compare to a hand lettered job like this? The car color can also be included in the cost by hand.
What’s the paint used? I’m considering doing this to my daily, and don’t know what type of brushes and paints to use?

Typically, We use 1Shot enamels.
I wish he'd come to Indiana an letter my 55 gasser
I hope he charged more than 200 bucks for all that work. It looks great
That’s a lost art for sure. Wish there were more of these old school dudes left.
My uncle hand painted ronnie Johnson's car back in the day
Dude can whip a brush tho
Damn! l cant think of a better 4 letter word, l have no breath.............
I would have smudged that wet paint 75 times

I wouldn't want to race it and risk ruining a perfect paint job because some rookie tries to overdrive the corner 😅
Not enough clear coat to protect from those first lap first turn winners....
Same to see all that nice work get ruined in the first race
Your car will get lots of attention in the pits. He puts the peel and stick vinyl boys to shame, imho.
