    Here's a very creative way to win as Solids, if you have ball in hand:
    Place the cue ball very close to the 3(Try not to freeze it, which would be a foul), have your forearm horizontal, and just barely drive the 3 into the 11, hoping that the 4 reaches a cushion. Even if you don't pocket the 11, your opponent will be in a world of hurt and if you pocket the 11, there is very little they can do with the 8.

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 года назад +1

      If you look at the over-head view of the three balls at the beginning of the video, it doesn't appear this is a good option. You might even leave a look at the 11. Concerning pocketing the 11 with the 3, I showed many good ways to do that.

    Solids had the percentages In its favor with the multiple options the best being the safety out. However if I’m stripes here I’m willing to live and die on the percentages of putting the 8 in front of the other corner pocket on that end of the table. If I’m shooting this I play the safety off the solids or pushing the 8 in front of the pocket if I’m stripes and just living with the percentages win or loss

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 года назад +1

      As I show in the video, this is the best option for stripes, but solids is still the favorite (assuming solids is smart).

  • @ezekielduran4386
    @ezekielduran4386 2 года назад +1

    I was arguing hypotheticals, and don't remember what the advantage was to shooting this way but I have a question you might be able to explain better with your knowledge of math and physics. What was proposed was you could get a legal hit on the stripe by jumping the cue and hitting the opposite end of the stripe as though you were coming from the direction of the corner pocket and keep the cue ball on the table. I said it was impossible. If the cue rimmed the pocket and managed to stay up would be the only way. I have seen that occur with different circumstances only once ever and it baffled everyone watching. But theoretically I thought because of inertia and force needed to jump over a solid to make that hit even possible would cause the cue to scratch or leave the table. Can you elaborate on possibilities of the cue staying on the table? The person I was debating suggested meeting the stripe ball on the opposite side and rail at the same time could cause the cue to compress the rail enough to allow the cue to rebound towards the table. But to me it seems absolutely farfetched as that force required to make the suggested hit wouldn't allow the cue to slow enough to hit the exact face of the rail where it angles. Thus it should either scratch or leave the table entirely. I'm sorry for being long winded in explanation, but can you elaborate on what is possible by trying that particular jump shot?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 года назад +2

      I think it is possible to jump into the 11, pocket the ball, and keep the CB on the table (my example in the video was close), but it is not a practical technique.

    • @ezekielduran4386
      @ezekielduran4386 2 года назад +1

      @@DrDaveBilliards Ok. That I can agree with. It is extremely difficult as you said not practical. It would require precision almost uncanny. I think the distance between balls is so condensed one would have to hit both other balls near simultaneously after legal contact to allow it to drop on the table. With that in mind I do have one more question. As you could see the attempt you had was caused to leave the table by contact with the 3 propelling it towards its generally original path or a quick reversal within a 90 degree limit of contact between the two condensed objects. Even if the hit of both solid balls occurred at the exact same time would one have to theoretically have started with topspin on the cue to keep it on the table? Or would backspin be correct? I'm questioning throw mechanics as spin should be transferred with contact, but the spaces I am seeing and the quick contact between many balls while in the air doesn't translate to something I'm familiar with, as I'm more aware of the practicalities when the ball is in motion along the same spacial plane.

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  2 года назад +1

      Honestly, I don't have much interest in discussing things that are not of much practical value, but I think a little backspin would help.

      The pockets are big, but they play much tighter than you might think, especially at fast speed. See:

      However the large size does make filming easier, especially slow-speed shots.

      @@DrDaveBilliards It shouldn´t be innuendu to you Dave. So, please don´t take it personally. I was just surprised, because most of your videos i had seen was on 8 footer and this is the first video after couple of years from seeing your last one. I lost a touch a bit :) . So your new table and especially pockets got my attention :). But anyway your dedication to pool is extraordinary. You helped me to become better player. Thanks for your hard work.

      My new 9' table (previously owned by Robert Byrne), with the bigger pocket facing angles and deeper shelf, actually plays tougher than my previous 8' table.

    APA rules would be ball in hand

      In case it wasn't clear, I was also playing the role of my "opponent," and was taking ball in hand after every intentional wrong-ball-first foul.

      ... or were you referring to a particular shot? If so, please post the MM:SS timestamp.
