Our family were blessed to live in Hawaii for three years, and were doubly blessed to live there when the late, great Mr. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, more popularly known as "Bruddah IZ," was still alive, but unfortunately passed away during our time in Hawaii. As is the case in so many places and cultures, you can't really understand it if you haven't been there. Hawaii is paradise, and anyone reading my comment MUST put visiting Hawaii on their bucket list. We experienced 1,000 days of perfect weather, with the palm trees swaying, the flower petals floating to the ground and the birds singing--EVERY DAY. It's magical.
I'm not sure that you realized it, but this is a version celebrating Iz's life after he died. The end of the video shows his ashes being scattered over the water.
@@MaddyReactions i didnt catch it either the very first time i saw this video....its a heavy tune...i recently learned that he recorded it, i think , in 1993, & it didnt do much outside of hawaii (in the "grunge era" of the early 90's) & then he passed n 1997-ish, & then around 1999 this song was in a car commercial (or something), & then soon it was in a bunch of commercials/ads, & it was everywhere, i remember not knowing who it was but just being enchanted by it (there was no internet then tho, so, finding out what a song used in an ad was hard info to get, & it took a while. And radio stations were/are really corporate & i guess it wasnt "slick" ,enuf for them, & Mtv, production-wise)...anyway, its just so gorgeous, idk, a lot of ppl heard & fell in love with this cover where he just made it his own. Anyway, thx to the internet, IZ now has a billion views, & his time for recognition had finally come...he had a short, but interesting life for sure...anyway, great reaction maddy
I tell everybody that if you were at IZ’s funeral you had to be IN the ocean at Makua Beach looking towards the shore 💯 From “Pray for Sex Beach” (east end of the beach) to “I don’t knowz” (the west end) about a mile long must’ve had about 10,000-15,000 people-and hundreds of big rigs and dump trucks. Me and my friends were swimming splashing water while holding onto the Hokulea, the boat they were letting his ashes go from💯🙏
The song was originally recorded in a spur-of-the-moment demo session in 1988. Israel had an idea of singing it this way, called the recording studio at 3 am, and was given a 15-minute deadline to arrive by the recording engineer.
🖤🖤🖤 .. you are not the only one reacting that did not realize that the video was a tribute to his funeral. He was beloved , he was a true talent. What you noticed in his community coming out was their respect and joy for him. They celebrated his life , which was cut short. The song is just joyous and his voice is just so tender. If you watch it again., you will see them spreading his ashes. Keep bringing the great music Maddy. 🎼🖤🎼
People need to pay attention and quit talking and not paying respect to the artist/song. I watched ALL the way to the end, hoping that You would get the reason for the celebration, but You didn't. Kinda sad. I pick songs like this one to gauge a reaction video. Needless to say, I'm not coming back.
@@leeannsheridannicolai1806Your bitter spirit contradicts the peace of IZ. I hope you can relax, and allow God’s Grace to wash you. Be patient, just like God is patient with you and me. Blessings 🙏✝️
Not everyone is aware of the rituals and ceremonies of other cultures when someone passes away. In New Orleans they party happily and loudly, in some places they dress in black for months, and in others the body is left out in the open for months so the spirits can leave when they are ready. About 5 years ago i watched a movie from 2000 called "Finding Forrester" (Sean Connery) and this song played at the end, loved it, never realized song was from 1993. It is as much of a gem, as a lady named Maddy.
Mahalos (thank you) for sharing your reaction/love to this beloved mele (song) of Braddah IZ. His voice is so hauntingly beautiful on this that it never leaves a dry eye when one listens to it! He was loved by all in his community on the island of Oahu and was a treasure to be around. Aloha and mahalos from Hawaii nei!!
As well as a wonderful singer, IZ was literally an angel come to live among us. They way he loved and treated people, friends and strangers alike, was angelic. He's gone back home now and we all miss him deeply. Whenever I see a rainbow, I see Bruddah IZ...
This performance of the song was featured in the movie "50 First Dates", starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Vale Izzy, may he rest in peace. A truly beautiful rendition of this classic song from The Wizard of Oz.
Those souls full of peace soon leave this world and transcend beyond this earthly life, perhaps they manage to awaken and understand things that those of us who are still here have not yet been able to perceive and understand. He already left a legacy in the world that may help many people, and now he is in a better place
Pacific islanders produce a lot of beautiful, peaceful music. I don't know that it would be good for a reaction, since it is sung in a local Polynesian language (Pu'amotu), but you might for example enjoy listening to Raumata's "Te Manu Hoata" for your own pleasure. As noted it is beautiful and peaceful, both the music and video, even for those who don't know the language...IMHO.
As you might have noticed from the video, he was extremely obese (nearly 1000 lbs near the end). This led to a bunch of health problems. He died from a heart attack at only 38 years old.
Yeah this is a beautiful song, so peaceful and touches your soul. Not many songs can do that. John Denver does that with his music. Know him? “Sunshine on my shoulder” will give you the same happy feeling inside.
Since you have also just discovered Home Free, I would recommend first listening to John Denver performing Take Me Home Country Roads, and then comparing it to Home Free's version. Both are beautifual, expressing a deep appreciation for nature's beauty, but are still very different. You could also compare Denver's Thank God I'm a Country Boy to Home Free's version - not as different, within the limitations of HF's being acapella, but the HF video is a lot of whimsy.
Hi I just subscribed because you seem more real about your with reactions to the video's. Have you done any of the Bee Gees songs. Like , Words and I started a Joke .and Massachusetts. I hope your channel keeps growing..
I find it so crazy how everyone finds this to be a happy song. It's a song about someone who is awaiting or wanting death. "I heard a song about a place over the rainbow. Where troubles melt away. Birds can fly, why can't I? I'll be there one day. If you can't find me, that's where I am." Don't get me wrong, it's an AMAZING song, but it's not really happy. Personally, it's the song I want to be listening to when I pass away if it's a death I see coming.
