This is awesome. I had a chain drive car too! 1969 subaru 360 van with a 600cc suzuki Kitana engine. I drove the factory trans with a chain. 24 forward gears and 6 reverse! Well done on your ride. It is very cool.
Acknowledging the effort required to produce these videos but I love your content. Your solutions to the problems as they pop up are ingenious. Please hang in there.
Went right to this episode cuz I was fascinated to learn how you got a reverse gear. What a cool little transmission. Such great fabrication you’ve done on that engine subframe too!
I’m so stoked to see your newest video! I love your videos. As I have said several times before your fab work blows me away. I look forward to seeing your work on my favorite model BMW! Keep up the good work!
Looks good, I can't wait to see you drive it. On another subject dear to my heart, How old is Walter? I have a westie that is 12 years old and Walter reminds me of him.
i am a retired machinist/millwright so i really enjoy the fabrication skills on this. and thank you for the 69 vw episodes. i just picked one up for a winter project. also, where do you buy the orange gloves? they seem to wear well.
Those pod filters won’t cut it! There is a lot of tech that went into the air box design, more than most people understand. It smooths out the power delivery, it catches the reversion pulses and fuel in these pulses , meaning with out the airbox you will need to add fuel to make the engine run and its fuel consumption will suffer with out the airbox. Lastly most bike lose between 20 -30 hp when you remove the airbox and retune it. How do I know all this? I have been dyno tuning motorcycles for a very long time . I have seen this airbox removal many times , I have read engineering books on airbox design and I have a lot of time trying to design new air boxes for bike engines being turboed or engine swaps where the original airbox was not going to work. As I said there is a lot of design tech that goes into these factory air boxes and removing result in a horrible and pesky engine with a much narrower power and torque delivery and dead’s spot lower in the rpm , hesitations getting on the throttle etc. It will require a lot of retuning to get it to run half decent . Just trying to help
That's really awesome. My only complaint about that, is it puts a lot of weight very high. Ok, I guess you're not building a gokart, you're re-powering a 1960s Italian sportscar in a shoe-box, but ... I love the choice of components and concepts, but I'd like the engine to be sitting at least 6 ~ 8 inches lower ~ preferably 12. ---- Thought experiment. Start with a Porsche Boxter. Now take the bodywork off and turn it into a 1960s formula one car ~ no side-pods, looks like a torpedo. Now compare your Boxter formula one, to this. How are they different? A: Your Porsche has massively radically lower centre of gravity. Thank you ~ that's my point.
@ the oil in a high g turn will uncover the oil pick up because bikes lean in the turn and the car doesn’t. You need to modify the oil pan and the pick up. Check out super fast Matt he blew his up and found this problem.
Are you going to use the rear engine mount? It looks to me like you're putting an awful lot of leverage on the two front engine mounts by not using that rear mount; consider that there is a lot of weigh in the back of the bike powerplant, where the transmission is, and it wasn't designed to have that weight hanging only from the front mounts. Maybe it'll be fine, I don't know. But maybe you'll hit a bump in the road and crack the thin + lightweight aluminium engine casings, dump all the oil onto the exhaust and rear wheels, destroy the motor and start a significant oil fire.
Amazing build! I am looking into buying a quaife diff. What ratio reduction do you have on your differential and how is your sprocket setup? Do you also know where I can get sprockets that fits the splines on the differential?
The Quaife diff has a 3.025 reduction. It was hard to find sprockets to fit the diff. I had to buy the taper lock adaptor from Quaife then I bought sprockets from MDS. Just google "MDS Sprockets" and you should find them. I used the (Taper-Lock Sprocket, #50BTL20). It's probably better to get the diff with the keyed shaft rather than the splined shaft so you don't need the adapter and have more options for sourcing the sprockets.
Just subscribed! I like your thinking, The easy way... or the Expensive way! I want to know if you have driven much with the short chain? I built my bike engine Smart and the chain is the noisy, high maintenance part. I was thinking about the Quaife bike engine units that do not use a chain. Any thought?
@JNH Classics do you have an oiler like a schott oiler or do you just oil the chain as needed? I built mine in a pinch and used the chain from the bike that has tight spots and it causes my engine to have a warble and shake under load. I have a new design for my differential and I will replace the chain with a new one and add the schott oiler.
Hi Jerod. I am working on a motorcycle engine powered autocross car so have to say your project is really cool. I need to build custom cv axles like you did. Wondering if the axles are still holding up and not producing any vibration or other issues? Anything you would do differently if you did them again? Thanks in advance for any tips.
The axles are working perfectly with no vibration. I’m very happy with them and can’t think of anything I would have done differently. Be sure to drill holes in the sleeves for plug welds👍
@@Jerod_Heltover the years i probably dropped a small apt into my fiat , my dream was k20 turbo , first engine blow head gasket, second engine I picked fully built civic drove it 200 miles home , put the set up in the fiat , and it blow up again , so 2020 came I said let’s build fullllly built set up , engine builder did the worse job I ever seen head broke leaking coolant between block and head , so 4 years car just sitting and I’m dumping money. Maybe there is a way to make it lower to the ground? A pressurized oil tank and engine horizontal to the ground? Better for handling.
Your chain-drive diff looked good! Still, nice that you found the Quaife. Very excited for the next video!
These videos have had me as spellbound as the first Disneyland shows in the '50s!
You make it all look so easy. You're amazing! Looking forward to the next video as well.

Always enjoy your videos.

Nice, this was a nice appetizer for the next episode. Your engineering always blows my mind!!

Great to see the progress! Looking forward to the next video.
Tip
It may be possible to recycle the prop drive from an outboard motor to use as either a reverse gear or right angle drive or both.

I was thinking the chain might need a couple guides or tensioner‘s?

Your video gave me the solution for my Kei truck KTM superduke engine swap
Glad I could help!

I actually built a custom airbox in a recent video👍
Why is the engine up in the air? Couldn’t mount it lower? Much lower?
No it couldn’t go lower
Great 😍
How do you adjust chain tension
The diff can be rotated to tighten the chain

Wasn't there a Quaife setup which didn't even require a chain? Much safer on the long run.
Nice work what about the oil sump?
What about it? No changes were made to the bike engine or its oil system
@ the oil in a high g turn will uncover the oil pick up because bikes lean in the turn and the car doesn’t. You need to modify the oil pan and the pick up. Check out super fast Matt he blew his up and found this problem.
What's the name of the differential you're using
Quaife (QBA2R)
What did this car ever do to you?

I’ve put about 1500 miles on it. The chain seems fine although it did stretch a little at first.

I don’t use an oiler. I used a new sealed chain and haven’t had any problems yet.
Hi, I'm not clear why you needed Fiesta shafts. Does the reduction box use Fiesta parts?
Yep the gear box uses a fiesta differential
Is it going excellent video? How much would you charge to make me a differential?
Sorry I barely have time to work on my own cars

Yyyyyyeeeeeeeaaaahhhh
What year mazda miata is the diff from? Also how much did the gear box cost you?
All the Miata parts are from an NA Miata (1st gen). The diff is very expensive. It cost more than the car or the motorcycle.
🙂
You’re fearless. And talented. Obsessive. Entertaining. Walters cool too.
👍😎✊
where did u get these cv axles? are they custom made or any standard which you have modified?
I bought stock axles cut them in half and welded them together
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I just talked to them 15 weeks to get one , it’s depressing wait time
I understand how you feel.
@@Jerod_Helt today I wired the money , it’s sure ain’t cheap but I don’t have power to invent the wheel or go on adventures, this unit looks solid .

Would you sell the converted Miata diff? I’m looking for something for my kei truck motorcycle build!
I’m saving it for a different project
@@Jerod_Helt totally understand! I’ll just have to make one myself then I guess 😆
Where did you source the custom sprocket for the miata differential?
www.rebelgears.com/👍
Does anyone think that something similar to this would work but fwd setup?
Yes people have done similar setups for front wheel drive
👍👍✌️
Can I get someone to buy reverse gear box?
How many gears are there
It has 6 speeds in forwards and 6 speeds in reverse 😀
How’s the durability of the Quaife unit
My understanding is they’re very durable. Mine has worked flawlessly so far.
Awesome thx for reply and great detailed video
Whats that chain size? 12b?
The chain is a 530
