I make knives in my free time mostly for buck knives skinning knives and one time made a cleaver. Damascus can be done with thousands of layers in a single afternoon if you keep folding and folding the steel. The cleaver I made was a first it took like 8 hrs .other than that I can turn out a buck knife with folded Damascus within a few hours.
@@pjotrasert2054 I think if you don't count the preparation, it can be done, if you got way too much time on your hands, and depending on what you count as an "afternoon". Technically it could be 11-12 hours, since every hour after the noon can be counted as "afternoon".
@@Mimirai yeah i have been making damascus for a few years and i can tell you it ain't that simple. Oh and an afternoon is the time from noon till evening( wich happens to be 6 after noon)
It's not like they mix dyes into it. It's the layering of the metals that makes the pattern. They're less durable (lose their edge easier) because the metal used is more brittle, more hard, but can be made sharper than a softer more durable blade, so you can cut things like fish very finely. The hardness of the metal used in knives determines their durability, not the "colors mixed in" lmao. These knives are great for cutting stuff with great precision but you don't want to use them for butchering, they'll lose their edge faster.
Damascus knives are really stunning and YES very hard to create, but im not entirely sure that it takes 2 years, well it can take up weeks just for it to show its beautiful patterns, also to be sturdy and very useable. Source: History channels Documentaries (i know, its second hand sources)
