@The Cambot While that's true, that doesn't change the fact that it clashes severely with the EU continuity on too many aspects. my first viewing of the Star Wars movies were completely random since I didn't own the movies at the time and had to rely on cable TV or watch it at my uncle's house. Revenge of the Sith being the first one I watched. I don't recommend my first time view order. I was happy to get all 6 Star Wars movies on DVD. despite having the 2006 DVD for the original trilogy which came with the original version of the movies, I always watched the special editions. when I went back years later to watch how it originally was, I preferred the special editions because there were scenes that weren't in the original cut of the movie or little moments that I liked weren't in there. not a big fan of the changes made in the 2010's Blu Ray releases. I prefer puppet Yoda in Phantom Menace and wasn't a fan of them adding Vader saying NOOOOO in Return of the Jedi.
Shouldn’t Splinter of the Minds Eye count as part of pure Star Wars since it was George’s original idea for a sequel if he couldn’t get most of the actors back? Or should it and most of the original Marvel comics be experienced after Legends, since they were never canon?
Splinter of the Mind's Eye is Alan Dean Foster's interpretation of Lucas' backup script for ESB, so it is EU by all means. The 80s Marvel comics are considered S-Canon, meaning they're on a lower tier than the majority of comics and novels that came after 1991, mostly due to some inconsistencies especially when referencing the Clone Wars
I asked this under another video, but I think here's the place to do it: what materials from the 'prequels' era would you suggest to read/play? I'm watching the 2003 short series right now, and I wonder what else books or comics or whatever I should check out for the best experience
The comics -> Star Wars (1998): Republic; Star Wars: Jedi Council - Acts of War; Star Wars Jedi series (Mace Windu, Shaak Ti, Aayla Secura, Count Dooku and Yoda) and Star Wars: Obsession.
i mean starting with the original trilogy gives you a better first impression star wars i think a new hope is probably a far more enjoyable film to general audiences than the phantom menace
becuase the prequels didnt have the technology needed in the 7ps to make them plus he wanted to go back in time and tell the story after the OT was finished
I’ll admit I’ve never actually watched the movies in chronological order, but I would DEFINITELY show my kids the original trilogy first. Something feels wrong about the idea of seeing the prequels before the originals. There’s more mystery involved in the way you’re introduced to the universe. Things like the Jedi, the Clone Wars, how the Empire came into power, who the Emperor really is, and why Darth Vader fell to the dark side feel like intriguing mysteries that are set up, and paid off in the prequels. The prequels just give you all the answers and all the information about the universe upfront without any build up. In A New Hope, the Force is a mysterious thing and the Jedi are a distant memory, that we get to learn more and more about with Luke as the trilogy goes on. When you see the prequels, it becomes kind of a treat to see the full Jedi Order all active. Starting with the prequels, all of the Jedi are there immediately swinging lightsabers around, with no intrigue around the concept at all. In A New Hope, you only hear about the Emperor briefly, and you’re left wondering who he is and who’s really in charge. Then in Empire Strikes Back you see his hologram, and it’s like “Oooo, that’s the main guy. Can’t wait to see what he can do.”. Then in Return of The Jedi, you’re like “Fuck yeah, there he is in the FLESH. The head honcho of the Empire. HOLY SHIT! He shoots lightning out of his fingers!”. Then in the prequels, you get his backstory, which is cool to see. If you watch the prequels first, you get NONE of that mystery, because you already know exactly who the Emperor is. It’s like if you watched an entire show about Thanos before watching the MCU. All the build up is ruined. I think introducing people to the prequels first cheapens not only the originals, but the prequels as well. When you see the Clone Troopers without the context of the originals, it does nothing. With the right context, it becomes “Oh my God, it’s the STORMTROOPERS!”. When the Republic becomes the Empire, if that’s the first movie you see, it’s just “Oh no, it’s an Empire now.”. If you’ve seen the originals, then you see the pieces all come together. Same with Palpatine getting scarred. If you watch the prequels first, that means nothing. If you watch the originals first, it’s “Hell yeah! Now he looks like the REAL Emperor.”. If you’re fortunate enough to not have come across the Emperor’s name, it’s even better. It becomes “Holy shit, HE’S the Emperor!”. Same thing with Vader getting in the suit. (Again it goes both ways, seeing Anakin’s face in Return of The Jedi is more powerful when you haven’t gotten a look at him outside of his mask). Plus, the originals are just better movies. I mean, do you really want someone’s first exposure to Star Wars be The Phantom Menace? Fuck no. At the end of the day, I don’t give a crap if George Lucas decided later that watching in chronological order. He MADE the original trilogy first, he thought of it first. That was what was originally intended to stand on it’s own as one story, and it does. The originals are the real story, prequels are just backstory.
you, my good sir, have the most valid opinion and i agree (but starting with the prequels can add shock value for anakin turning evil and the republic and jedi falling) but the ogs are just a better first impression of star wars
You say the Disney trilogy are not the definitive sequels because George Lucas didn’t like them, but George Lucas sold the rights to Disney. That was his choice. I would hope he discussed what Disney would do with the series, if not, I would assume he at least trusted them to do the right thing. And if not that either, if it was just for the money, that’s still George Lucas‘s decision. That decision came from the same brain that created the story. If he didn’t care what happened with the story, then it doesn’t matter if he didn’t like the next three films. He agreed to have someone else take over, and that is just the historical fact, regardless the reason he gave it to Disney. So if it’s a historical fact that he gave Star Wars to Disney, then those Disney films are also factually canon. Hell, even the original “original trilogy” Isn’t Canon anymore because the “original trilogy” had 1001 edits, not just in the physical removal of frames of film, but entire digital alterations. George Lucas has made it a fact that there is no single Star Wars timeline, which is canon. There are original theatrical versions, other versions before that even, versions on VHS, versions on Blu-ray. What I don’t understand is why, when he first started to make these films did he shoot the middle three episodes first? If they are intended to be watched in order of episodes, why not make the episodes in order? It’s just a huge mess. So much of a mess that I kind of laugh at the idea that all of a sudden a Disney owned sequel can’t be “canon”.
he didn't think of the prequels before he had a vague backstory but he wanted it to be explained through the original movies. later he renamed them to ep4 5 and 6 decided to go back and make 1, 2, and 3.
Honestly why even bother with the Disney canon? I am sure there is some good stuff out there but it will lead to the sequel trilogy which is absolute dog shit
Bruh the cgi quality from the prequels and the special edition originals were NOT crappy. So no he did make the smartest decisions especially when the originals despecialized don’t hold up well.
wtf are you talking about? The majority of the CGI in the prequels that people complain about such as CGI cities, big bulky speeders, skyscrappers and the city planet... were mostly live models to begin with. I mean Jar Jar for as annoying as he can be, looks at leasty semi-photorealistic. Where as the majority of the CGI in the original trilogy being added, granted, had a few janky points in it here and there... but for the most part, most of the additions are perfectly fine. Even the Jabba the Hutt Palace scene that people complain about with the singing, saying it took away from the dark, gritty, grungy and scary feeling... while not realizing when you actually watch it, its more goofy and out of place with fucking puppets the way they move and sound than with the CGI. At least the CGI TRIES to integrate them into the scenery seamlessly. I swear, most of the criticism the Star Wars films get from the additions that George Lucas added later are the most pedantic, boring, hyperbolic nonsense I've ever heard a film creator get.

Given how much you've delved into the EU by now, I believe you could give it a try yourself, as it could attract some very positive attention.
I really needed this
Glad I could help
my first viewing of the Star Wars movies were completely random since I didn't own the movies at the time and had to rely on cable TV or watch it at my uncle's house.
I think technically not since A New Hope didn’t flop at the box office and George could make Empire Strikes Back
Splinter of the Mind's Eye is Alan Dean Foster's interpretation of Lucas' backup script for ESB, so it is EU by all means.
The 80s Marvel comics are considered S-Canon, meaning they're on a lower tier than the majority of comics and novels that came after 1991, mostly due to some inconsistencies especially when referencing the Clone Wars
Hey I just finished first 6 Star Wars (chapter 1-6) what should I watch next ?
watch this video then
read heir to the empire or watch tcw
I asked this under another video, but I think here's the place to do it: what materials from the 'prequels' era would you suggest to read/play? I'm watching the 2003 short series right now, and I wonder what else books or comics or whatever I should check out for the best experience
The comics -> Star Wars (1998): Republic; Star Wars: Jedi Council - Acts of War; Star Wars Jedi series (Mace Windu, Shaak Ti, Aayla Secura, Count Dooku and Yoda) and Star Wars: Obsession.
Could you maybe put in a compiled watch order?
i mean starting with the original trilogy gives you a better first impression star wars i think a new hope is probably a far more enjoyable film to general audiences than the phantom menace
why wouldnt Lucas make the episodes how he is suggesting now to begin with?
becuase the prequels didnt have the technology needed in the 7ps to make them plus he wanted to go back in time and tell the story after the OT was finished
My Biggest Problem With Wookieepedia Is That It Includes TCW In Legends.
Dude you should watch the video JJ made explaining his rage it explains everything
You're so cool
yk it 😎

He sold Star Wars with the hopes that his sequels would be made. But J.J. Abrams wanted to make his fanfiction instead.
he didn't think of the prequels before he had a vague backstory but he wanted it to be explained through the original movies. later he renamed them to ep4 5 and 6 decided to go back and make 1, 2, and 3.
Honestly why even bother with the Disney canon? I am sure there is some good stuff out there but it will lead to the sequel trilogy which is absolute dog shit
Why do you speak like that
George Lucas also inserted crappy prequel quality CGI into the original trilogy so clearly he didn’t always make the smartest decisions!
Bro the CGI a is bad argument is so stupid, like is there more to your distaste to the prequels than CGI crap?
I’d like to hear your thoughts on what appears to be this new movement called The Fandom Initiative. They’re supposedly a group of RUclipsrs who are banding together to fight who they call The Fandom Menace, and one of their members is Turf Nation. youtube.com/@FandomInitiative
Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean I resubscribed

Screams "reverse politics" to me. Don't forget basic physics, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I peg this group as not taking long before they succumb to the same flaws that bog down the #FandomMenace. Hubris and greed is human nature, after all.
