I just purchased a Gain Changer SR in Feb 2020 and I am so impressed. Love this pedal. It's capable of covering so many tonal options. People are not-hip to: Barber Electronics. Great products that fly under-the-radar. Dave just keeps tweaking and Improving everything he does. oNe LovE from NYC
Great side by side review of these! I was looking for a Marshall-Esque pedal about 5 years ago and I walked out of the store with a Direct Drive after comparing it to a Box of Rock and a Dirty Little Secret pedal; I had come to buy the DSL actually. The DD sounded the best.. I think I played it out of a black face type amp. I had never heard of Barber and was a bit shocked that it was also the most economical out of the lot. Fast forward and I now have a DD v3 and a V4 Direct Drive, a BUSS (dumble style drive on one setting and Marshall-esque on the other setting, called the Super Sport), and a GC SR. As you heard, compliments of Mr. Blu, they all sound great in their own way. It did sound like Mr. Blu had the BUSS on the SS setting btw. The GC was played on the high gain setting in this review, which is quite good, but I usually play it on the low gain setting, which can be set very transparently with a flat EQ. It can be used like a Lightspeed or Timmy type drive with great results. Compared to my Lightspeed the GC SR in low gain mode is less mid scooped and is a bit more punchy, especially when you set the EQ toggle to the mid position. I usually run it on the flat setting. There is also a “fat flat” EQ setting which is superb with vintage voiced Fender bridge single coils. Great pedals for sure. I don’t have the DD/DC or whatever, and after hearing Mr. Blu play it, I want one!!!
hi there:) im looking for a low gainer to use with a tele and a fendery amp (less scooped). how do you think the GC SR compares to the Lightspeed for the job ? looking for something "transparent" to augment and go to edge of break up type of sound. thx:)
Wow hadn't ever heard the Buss-it's epic. Gain Changer seems smoother...nice. Direct Drive is great but I think I prefer the Buss i this demo....HOWEVER, that might be different when playing on a clean channel that's mid-scooped...you might need that extra midrange once you click on your OD, plus it barks very nicely.
I love Barber pedals. I have a small box GC and a large box GC, a DD and a Tone Press and the Gain Changer has been my favourite overdrive for a few years now.
I thank you very much for this side by side comparison of these - however: Is it possible that they sound so close in the video because the mic picks up the coloration of the room? Which one would you consider being most capable of the american soft clipping low drive sound?

Why are you using a Strat with an AC/DC pedal?

I have the Gain Changer and it is fantastic! Been looking at the BUSS, does it offer some different tones than the Gain Changer? Great demo btw!
I have Super Sport and Small Fry.They are great pedals.
