I gotta say, Ryan is one of the nicest guys I've spoken to. Beav as well. I'm sure they all are but those are the only two I've had the chance to talk to so far. It's great to see the individual guys getting the light shined on them a little more.
On one side of the coin, it's cool to see how an album doesn't just come together instantaneously; there are all these little touches added and redo's and alternate takes. On the other side of the coin, it's incredible to watch how much creativity and improvisation comes together to affect all these little changes I've never even considered! It's helpful for my self-critical side to see.
Nolly eating in the background one second then in the next shot he's stood behind Dev like an automatron, just watching, waiting, for the right time to strike......he is not human you know. From The Heart sounds fucking huge btw, very excited for this album.
I had a drum lesson with Ryan last year and it was one of the most inspirational things I've ever experienced. Thanks again Ryan, I'm pumped as fuck for this album.
I could watch these guys play and chat for a year. All of them are amazing at their profession, being human, and not being too serious about most of it.
Dude, the production on the new album is fantastic! It's really taking your art to a new level. You can hear absolutely everything little that's going on and I think you are finally going to get the recognition you deserve. Prepare to become a "superstar", lol,
Love you guys! Ryan...LOL Thanks for the giggles this early in the morning.. That's some fat sounds coming off those skins..Bright..Shiny and Chrome.. :) While this is a few months back already.. glad you guys are putting this out for us to see. See ya all in NYC
So far only one album has truly captured the imagination this year, Cult Of Luna & Julie Christmas "Mariner" album. Hopefully, Dev can deliver another great album. If it's half as good as Sky Blue, Addicted, Accelerated Evolution, Ocean Machine, Physicist or Ziltoid it'll be good enough.
***** Are you a fucking genius or what??? I discovered that album just last week and those first tracks are terrific. Great female vocals. There you go, Devy fans know their stuff.
The drums on the new track Failure are just so damn good. They sound so natural, they carry a great mood, and i feel like I can hear the slap of the skins. Really excited for this album.
So fucking good. To see a nice guy excelling at his applied skill set. To see a band overdubbing an already powerful drum part to make it MORE powerful, more perfect... Just some fantastic film making here. Thank for this.
Keep em coming, MORE, MORE, MORE :D Ryan is so awesome, I would train drums with him every day of the week, such an inspirational and underrated drummer
It's amazing coming back to watch these videos after listening to Transcendence over and over (and over and over), you can really tell the parts they're working on individually... I can hear the rest of the song in my head as RVP's laying down his drum tracks. Zim did a fantastic job capturing the creative process going on here, on top of the mini biographies.
I love those little asides in the projection room - if the lot of you released this documentary on DVD and did an entire commentary track just ripping the piss out of each other, well... that'd just be swell!!
Not sure u or DT of the crew Devin, but I just wanted to let ya know. All of you have spoken to me musically and as an artist beyond what I could ever dream. I first learned of you back in Strapping Young Lad, but haven't respected you so much more for your growth in music and life in general. Mad respect for u and everyone involved. I have learned the older I have gotten, the more spiritual I am. I would love to meet you all 1 day. Would be the greatest dream of my life come true. You and everyone else involved, have proven to me what it means to be an artist in this industry. Been listening to ya strong Devy for over 14 yrs strong brother. Plz let me know when u plan to do a tour in Kansas whatsoever. I would pay just to meet you brother. Thank you so very much. You have helped someone like myself deal with schizo-effective disorder in my life. Means more to me than ya know. I dont want ur signature. I just want to be ur friend, is all I ask!
this video wins today everything about it was fantastic Ryan has an incredible way with words i love the first rate version of yourself line devins cranium is shiny and full of music epicness and that song at about 4 minutes in holy shit that sounds mindblowing im always excited for new dtp records and this time around what can i say im still fucking excited :D
This guy should quit drums and become a motivational speaker. It is the duty of every artist to exaggerate the importance of his or her own work, however, this guy takes it to a new level. Never before has hitting things sounded like such an achievement. Can I have some life coaching please?
It doesn't take a great deal of wit to minimize someone's work, artistic or otherwise. Actually becoming as successful as Ryan in the world of drumming is certainly no small feat, and no less valid a dream. Considerably bigger than what many dream and achieve, in any case.
"Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else"
- Judy Garland
holy shit hahahaha
Ryan's such a positive guy it's so nice to hear him talk about anything
Ryan, Dev, and Nolly all in the one room...
I've never seen so little hair on 3 people ever...
I gotta say, Ryan is one of the nicest guys I've spoken to. Beav as well. I'm sure they all are but those are the only two I've had the chance to talk to so far. It's great to see the individual guys getting the light shined on them a little more.
Ryan and Beav are the most outgoing, friendly guys in the band for sure.
Agreed I met Ryan at a show before they played, super nice guy I was honored to meet him.
On one side of the coin, it's cool to see how an album doesn't just come together instantaneously; there are all these little touches added and redo's and alternate takes. what a blast that guy is. thank you for sharing this with us Dev
Sounding loud and epic, Devin!! Can't wait to shit my pants off when the album gets released!
Dig it Dev. Hope you do something similar for each new album you put out. It's fun to see the state of mind everyone is in during the production.
Devin + Rayn + Nolly + making off content = awesomeness
Ryan is a class act. One of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of meeting. I like his philosophy and try to take it to heart every day.
That "Winger" drum fill ruled! hahaha
Man I love watching these guys work together. Fucking amazing.
Nolly eating in the background one second then in the next shot he's stood behind Dev like an automatron, just watching, waiting, for the right time to strike......he is not human you know. From The Heart sounds fucking huge btw, very excited for this album.
The opening words by RVP! Just amazing
I want more! :)
And it was actually quite inspirational. :)
I love Ryan! What an amazing dude.
I'm glad to see Devy working with Nolly. Nolly's ear for tones is second to none.

I had a drum lesson with Ryan last year and it was one of the most inspirational things I've ever experienced. Thanks again Ryan, I'm pumped as fuck for this album.

I love Offer Your Light & From The Heart, lyrically and drum-atically.
year by year, this band is growing deeper into my heart.

I could watch these guys play and chat for a year. All of them are amazing at their profession, being human, and not being too serious about most of it.
That puts a smile on my face :)

Just some fantastic film making here.

I love those little asides in the projection room - if the lot of you released this documentary on DVD and did an entire commentary track just ripping the piss out of each other, well... that'd just be swell!!
Yeah! A new epic album!
Opeth, take notes on how to do an album doc.
Lol so true
I should add, Opeth used to have good album docs...and good albums.
Also take notes on how to get better drum tones. The Sorceress mix sounds janky
we ehhh come here to drink a lot of beer and ehhh yeah
Mikael and Dev in the same room. omg
master musicians at all levels
Devin and nolly. Awesome.
Dev never fails to make me smile.
Great stuff, enjoying these a lot.
Ryan is the best !!!!
So inspirational. Wow.
6:44 That's Ash Pearson from Revocation and the Drumeo YT Channel... Another awesome drummer, he seems so humble and kind.
Just when I think Ryan can't get more awesome.

Great episode! Everyone's happy .. Audience is happy. :)
Made me want to start playing the drums again, but I'm probably too old for that now haha
this video wins today everything about it was fantastic Ryan has an incredible way with words i love the first rate version of yourself line devins cranium is shiny and full of music epicness and that song at about 4 minutes in holy shit that sounds mindblowing im always excited for new dtp records and this time around what can i say im still fucking excited :D
Nolly? the legend him self. Never expected to see him.
2:00 Micheal?.. from Vsauce?
Nolly's "whew!" is iconic
This guy should quit drums and become a motivational speaker. It is the duty of every artist to exaggerate the importance of his or her own work, however, this guy takes it to a new level. Never before has hitting things sounded like such an achievement. Can I have some life coaching please?
why not both amirite?
It doesn't take a great deal of wit to minimize someone's work, artistic or otherwise. Actually becoming as successful as Ryan in the world of drumming is certainly no small feat, and no less valid a dream. Considerably bigger than what many dream and achieve, in any case.
Rohann van Rensburg
That's simply not true - that took ALL OF MY WITS!
+howyourgardengrows yeah, not a great deal.
Kit Palmer Interesting, how are you operationalising that?
Nolly was there working on the drums!....I'm pre-ordering this now! Was gonna do it anyways cuz i love Devin but now....Fuuuuuu!
Good stuff
Holy shit it's nolly and devin.... oh my glands...
The drum tech is that guy from Periphery, isn't he ?
Yeah, that's Adam 'Nolly' Getgood. He plays bass and produces for Periphery, but he's also a studio technician by trade.
Yep,Adam Nolly Getgood. A great bass player, producer, and even a better guitar player.
Wait wait wait.... he's a tech and a producer... and his last name is "Getgood"?
Some fuckin divine intervention shit going on.
Yeah, it's quite funny considering how good he is at everything that he does. :D
He gets to his first day of school; they call out 'Getgood?'; and so he did.
Hermoso =)
I love that my top suggestion after watching this is "Einstein Documentary" Fuck yea.
Epicloud had such a damn good drum sound.
Still does.
Jajajaja, ver producir a Devin es increible y a la vez gracioso!!!
I fucking miss DTP 😭😭😭
+Devin Townsend - lovely! When can we expect next episodes online? ^_^
This is cool. I took alot of notes.
NOLLLLLLLLZZZ YESSSSS
Wow, didn't expect nollynollynollynolly to be here
Ryan Van Poederooyen - Zen King of drumming
What a swell guy
Winger. Fuck yeah.
GETGOOD SITING!
Is Nolly bad at anything? Seriously? Like fucking seriously?
Is there something in music that he CAN NOT DO?!
I've heard that Nolly is such a good engineer he can tune a mouse to sound like a lap steel guitar....
+S-PRO Gaming I believe it O_O
+S-PRO Gaming Fancy seein' you here!
Scot McGovern OH Herroo XD
His ability to grow hair leaves much to be desired.
Thank you for making me smile.
Nolly
Winger drum fill FTW
I wonder if having nolly in the studio was a result from them touring together in Australia
so not only is pretty much everyone in the band bald, but they got Nolly so even the producer/sound engineer is bald haha
Bomm Bum Bum Bomm Bum bumm BOMMMM!! lol
