Eight travelers. Eight adventures. Eight roles to play in a new world brought to life by Square Enix. Explore each traveler’s story and use their abilities in and out of battle. Will you expand your horizons as the Merchant or track down a traitor as the Warrior? Where will you go? Who will join you? You alone can choose your path in Octopath Traveler the best jrpg.
Step into the shoes of a traveler to inherit their struggles and strengths. Use each character’s special abilities to interact with the world and enhance your tactics in turn-based battles. The Dancer’s alluring charm leads followers into battle, whereas the Apothecary can mix items to heal allies or unleash explosive attacks. Discover enemy weaknesses and target them to break through their defenses. Store Boost Points with each turn and then spend them at strategic times to strengthen abilities, chain attacks, or provide aid. Choose the path you wish to walk and discover what lies beyond the horizon. There's great Octopath Traveler gameplay in one of the most interested rpg games by Square Enix.

Can't wait to see you complete Octopath 2 in 2028; it's an improvement on the first game in almost every possible way
Debatable. I played the game realizing that I don’t like the map structure.
for me the major bossfights just take way too much time and it doesnt really feel great to lose 20-30mins of time because you had a bad turn on a boss..., I also didnt like the amount of different story path's, too many characters and some of them have very dramatic backstories and then you have a girl that wants to dance. Thorné, hikari and themenos were the only ones I enjoyed, the others were mostly skipped, might have just gotten tired of doing character stories tho
For me the only fight that felt like it lasted really long was the final boss, which… goes without saying, it’s the final boss of a JRPG.
That being said, I haven’t fought the superboss yet and I know that’s going to be a mess.
true is an amazing game
Is the story dialogue better? Like do party members interact at all with the main characters story or are they just background fillers that really don't add much like in the 1st?
The Protagonists' names spelling Octopath also shows in the world map. Starting with Ophelia, you get them all in order as you go clockwise around the map.
Whoa, never knew that!
The main villains in 2 also spell out Octopath backwards if you arrange them in the their heroes' spots. note the main villains aren't exactly the final chapter bosses, for example Mugen isn't Hikari's main villain even tho you'd think he is
The music in both Octopath games is exceptional. To my ear, Nishiki is a worthy successor to Uematsu. I would very much like to thank him for his work.
Completely agree. When I started the game, I started with Ophelia, and when I got to the top of the hill in her home village, and the music swelled while the snow fell aaah! My heart!
I still can't believe he's the composer for Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, as well. Equally insane music and it's on a card game simulator!
100 % Agree and have thought these exact words so many times since the game's release. The whole soundtrack sends goosebumps all over me. It's just so...right.
What is his full name?
Uematsu is a GOD
Literally just completed the first game and started the second. I'm so glad a creator I like has made a video on it. This'll be a good one!
I'm still trying to get through the first game, the grind is real 😮💨
@@TheOther-Dude I’m currently playing through it and I don’t grind much at all I just do the side quests to get money and then buy good equipment. I have Primrose at level 17 and was able to beat Ophelia’s chapter 2 boss.
@@TheOther-Dude that's why I dropped it.
Apparently the 2nd game is just as bad so I skipped it
Same, still trying to beat the first, but I wanted to start paying the 2nd gane today
If you like Octopath, you will love Triangle Strategy.
The world felt alive. By not having your characters be at the center of the universe the whole time it feels like there's more happening. This is also helped by the fact that there are several recurring NPC's who also travel the world in their own time. Rather than lament what it doesn't have, I like to focus on what it does.
Heck I was one of the people who was pissed at the finale not only because it was done badly, but because the whole "were the chosen ones who are all connected in some way now we must fight the ultimate evil" thing was exactly the deal I thought the story was avoiding only to play it straight in the last leg of the journey
@@Zezlemetkun well, it's not like they were born the chosen ones, they just happened to be strong enough to recieve blessings from the past heroes (you get the "jobs "from the heroes that keep getting mentioned all the time, like Aelfric or Alephan), so it is more a coincidence and necessity than it is destiny, which honestly is why I dig it
I was just about to complete Sonic Frontiers, and go through my back catalog of games, including Octopath Traveler. Talk about a coincidence.
The characters having 8 separate stories wasnt a surprise, thats literally how it was advertised and why I was interested
One of my favorite games of all time, so glad to see this!!!
The world map is also genius in that if you look at it carefully enough, you can see the markings for the job shrines. The map isn't just a throw-away thing meant only to contextualize position and select a fast-travel destination.
NO SHOT
The Path Actions mechanic really do add some serious depth to NPC interaction, allowing you to do more than just talk to them. The Inquire/Scrutinize path actions (which allow you to obtain information from NPCs) especially adds such astonishing detail, allowing the player to not only obtain an assortment of useful benefits, but also learn something interesting about the subject NPC, making the NPCs feel more like real people with their own lives to live, rather than just some random person walking around.
For Jirard to complete this game, you might say...
His focus was unparalleled. 😎
Would you say his blade was unbending?
he may even steal the show
He got down to work.
He's ready, are you?
Better watch him now!
I really liked when you notice how the individual story-arcs are linked to eachother. It really makes you feel something else when you defeat the final boss in H'aniit's storyline.
Red-Eye hit me in the face with that. I was expecting something bestial, but when I saw the actual sprite in the battle, and noticed the similarities to the enemy beats in Cyrus's path 🤯 Then realizing what Red-Eye actually was and how it tied into Alfyn and Tressa, and that was all before the secret boss. I will defend the subtle connections until I'm blue in the face.
@@luciferfaust wait, there is a secret boss?
I remember doing the Galdera fight back when the game first came out, before there were guides to win. My party was in the high 50's to high 60's, and it took me 7 tries to win. The 8 boss gauntlet leading up to the final battle was super easy, but that final battle was so difficult and fun.
Levels in Octopath don't matter much, it's all about strategy. If you are level 85 and go up against Galdera without a good strategy you will lose. If you're level 60 and you have a solid plan you will win.
This. Leveling up doesn't actually boost your stats much. The gap between level 50 and 75 is minimal.
What matters is how you've organized your team. What jobs, equipment, skills you equip for each member is the difference between cheesing the final boss and struggling against it.
There's a reason why speedrunning this game is possible.
I’ll be real, I found Galdera to be too much of a hassle. The fact you can’t save after the boss gauntlet is so annoying in a game about trial and error, especially in combat. If i wanted to try a new strategy, I would have to play through a half hour gauntlet first.
As much as Octopath is about strategy, Galdera isn’t.
The speedrun beats Galdera at about level 30-40ish, iirc. Level seriously doesn't matter, especially if you abuse the best strats (namely max multiplier Sorcerer Tressa and 1 HP Fortitude, among others).
Really? I found Galdera to be super annoying for no conceivable reason. There is genuinely no reason for the gauntlet not to follow up with a save, and his phases are so brutal to the point that it's simply better to exploit and overpower your way past them rather than interact since you risk so much by not doing so. I was not enjoying myself by the time I beat him, which is weird because I absolutely loved strategizing against the other bosses in the game.
@Mr. Tam O' Shanter Speaking from personal experience, there are effectively a few "optimal" (HEAVY SCARE QUOTES) strategies in the sense that certain combinations of abilities and set-ups let you steamroll the final boss, namely stacking so many multipliers you destroy everything. There are still a lot of different strategies that work, though. I've used relatively different methods basically every time I've fought the final boss and all of them worked with different amount of risk and time involved.
About Path Actions, I really like Inquire/Scrutinize in this game.
There's a very special flair to knowing more about random NPCs. In fact, some of those NPCs moved more than some bits of the story for the playable characters in Chapter 1/2.
Inquire/Scrutinize shows a facet of NPC characters that you don't usually see in videogames, so whenever you're just enjoying the story and trying to understand the world around you, it's pretty great!
Octopath Traveler is the game that made me realize how much I love RPGs. Easily one of my favorite games and I lose it when the sequel was announced. And yet, I can't deny the true completion hurdles given I'm set on any runs outside of the first will be 99% only. The superboss alone is legitimate HELL and is the only thing I will never do again in replays. Other than that I can't get enough octopath
Same I already beat him on my first playthrough, I will never do that again...
The opening to the 2nd Battle Theme always had my blood pumping instantly. I love this game's score
Wow! Never realized you did not play this one yet! So excited to hear what you have to say about it!
Thanks for keeping us all entertained with your video game skills and your willingness to grind through so many games over the years!
Bosses in games like these tend to be made to be fought twice. The first time you learn the second time you prepare a stratigy. which is mostly fine, but sometimes I wish the fights were'nt capable of lasting more than an hour
Thinking about it, Octopath Traveler 1 feels almost like the early sessions of a D&D campaign. Hear me out :
You have 8 separate people who never knew each other (or only loosely) being brought together to travel the world and explore its wonders. Now what's different here is that each Traveler seems to have their own one-on-one session with the GM before they end up part of the main group, which effectively fleshes out their own personal goals and motivations. The fact that they travel together is happenstance but with the added security they share being together is what keeps them together. So once they come across another Traveler, they help them with their issue and then hey, that person is leaving to travel why not just join the group? And once they get someplace where one of them needs to pursue their goal, they do and their companion helps them, as they expect they will when they'll have to deal with their own thing.
I loved this game so much. The art, the characters, the soundtrack. I’m not even a RPG person I never really play them I find them too long n repetitive but I absolutely adore this game.
This game singlehandedly got me into JRPGs, cannot wait to play the sequel.
The music for the whole Octopath Traveller series (even the mobile game) are my favorite soundtracks in all of video games. They are just so damn good.
Octopath Traveler is so amazing! I hope you end up playing more turn based RPGs on this channel.
Love this game. My biggest obstacle in this game was that some side quests are almost impossible to figure out without looking them up or happening to stumble into the right person. Otherwise you just have to run around and use every path action on everyone
I think that was the intention.
There's surprisingly a lot of depth in your average Octopath NPC. Almost all of them have at least a paragraph's worth of backstory or something else going on.
I had a blast going through the sidequests. Did you know that there are multiple ways to complete them, and depending on how it's done you change the fate of that NPC forever as well as the others involved?
The Break system is a great risk vs reward system. If you Break an enemy, Reward: Enemy loses turn. Risk: If they get another turn, they attack multiple times before the party.
I’m so glad you completed this game, I loved it and am enjoying 2 even more now. Also 2s steam achievements seem much more reasonable.
I'm super glad you covered this game, it's one of my favorite jrpgs! Coincidental timing too, I just finished replaying it this week to finally get 100%! I imagine it would be pretty tough to do a completionist run on the first playthrough without any prior knowledge, so great job! (Great video too as always, keep up the good work!)
Octopath Traveler was a great inspiration for starting to learn 3D basics with Blender. By practicing just a little bit of pixel art character sprites and inserting images as planes into a work flow, it's incredibly easy and rewarding to experiment with as a visual style!
Would love to see some of your progress and work examples! Very inspiring.
That's cool, Joshua.
always great to hear your story on these challenging games, keep up the good work :)
Yuuussss, glad you finally made a video on my fav switch game, that really got me back into video gaming after taking a long break while in college and after for like ten years. Loved listening to this while playing Octopath traveler 2!
Octopath Traveler's music is the stuff of legends and deserves way more praise than it gets (it lost to Red Dead Redemption 2 at the VGAs for some reason). Hearing Decisive Battle when I played the demo is what convinced me to buy the game (I didn't even have a Switch at the time, and used my brother's) and I still get a little teary eyed every time I listen to Determination (yes, I bought the soundtrack). The best part, in my opinion, is how the character's 'get pumped' themes (For Light, For Truth, For Revenge, etc.) transition into Battle at Journey's End, the track that plays for the final bosses of each character's story.
It's such a shame that with DMCAs and such, reviewers can't really give props to the composers and the music, just a casual mention here and there. The music from games like the Suikoden series, Legend of Mana, and Live A Live were what got me into music in the first place, and why I went to college to be a music teacher.
I can’t watch this right now but I have to say; Jetpack’s thumbnail art is so cute!!! All the characters with Jirard look amazing!!

There is an Octopath Traveller 2. It came out recently.
Octo path 2 Has I think better story cohesion... but still many of the same faults.
I am enjoying the first time exploration more than the first tho.
Plus some mechanical mixing it feels same but different.
I suggest starting with Osvald or Patito. Osvald is the scholar and like Cyras tells you weaknesses. Partito is the merchant and you need the money and grind assist he gives you.
But for the purpose of Fun I think Ochette is the best start. Shes a hunter but her path actions are the fun part.
Great to see you tackle this one!
I still find the story complaints very... strange? I remember absolutely loving every one's story in a vacuum and then when I got to the Gate of Finis and realised all the minor interactions that created the story and got all 8 characters to that moment was kinda sick. Rewards someone who at least pays some attention to the story.
Same here, I've never related to all the story complaints. It was just trying something different.
Those people just need explanation for everything, like why characters sometimes acts like they are alone in the story but suddenly have a party of 4 during battles (which is understandable, looking at you Primrose Ch. 3). I honestly don't care either as long as the story itself works.
And I guess if a story doesn't have a major character and a God dying, they consider it kids story level.
I mean, what he's basically saying is "It's different and that can scare people", lol, it's quite good otherwise
Normally you’d have one main story that involves every character. Octopath traveler is weird bc each character has their own individual story, but none of them really intertwine so it’s as if the developers forced the characters together for no reason.
Some ppl might not care bc they only focus on gameplay but it totally breaks the immersion when the game lacks sense in its story.
MAN it's getting scary! Every time I'm almost done with a game you make a video on it and I have to put it on watch later until I'm done. Just unlocked the 4th secret job and on my way to finish it.
really love both of the games, hope you cover the second some day
Gau was mocking Cyan the entire time in FFVI. Cyan was actually Mr. Thou. Gau, in and of himself, was just an unfortunate savage.
Glad you finally got to post your video review of Octopath Traveler, especially since its sequel got released about half a month ago. Hope you'll get to make a review about Octopath Traveler II soon!
Loved the vid !!
Jirrad I am SO JEALOUS of your curls😍 They look SO GOOD! Also great job on the video!!
Never seen your channel before but my god!!! I love it! Subscribed!
This was my first JRPG, so my perspective going into it was not informed by decades of playing Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc.
“Everyone remembers their first [JRPG]” is a phrase as true as ever to me after playing this. I owe it to this game to unlocking in my brain a newfound obsession with JRPG’s; with setting a high standard in almost all other aspects of game enjoyment; with gorgeous visuals and a masterpiece of musical composition.
Despite its flaws, truly despite them, it’s such a special experience. I acknowledge the criticisms veterans have of how this and that with the narrative or voice acting could be better; but I don’t feel a shred of disappointment. I savored with ease every NPC character vignette through path actions or main and side quests. The world building strikes the sweet spot of handing you the beginnings of a compelling narrative and a wondrous , beautiful world, and asks you to take actions to make it your own story and experience to finish that story. This balance is probably the games biggest “hidden” strength.
Having played and completed around 10 -15 JRPG’s since finishing this one in 2018, I still think about it and will definitely someday play through it again.
Happy to see Octopath 1 getting some love. I really hope he eventually gets around to Octopath 2, it's better in pretty much every way.
OMG you did it you absolute mad lad. My favorite game!! 😍😍😍 Thank you for completing and showing love to this absolute gem
I'm actually playing this game rn and i love how innovative it is in a genre thats all about making it classic.
Love your work man, the whole team
Keep up the good work
Great video and spot on, dude.
Thank you for making another great video!
Ocotopath is literally one of my all time favorite games, when i first played it on the switch it felt like literal magic from how unique it was. I know a lot of people have issues with the first game's characters "not interacting", but (imo) i personally loved the side cuts of the travel banter we get of the characters weighing in after story beats and seeing how they pair with one another. Like how Alfyn and Primrose kind of have a thing going on, or how Therion feels Alfyn is one of the few people he can be a bit honest with. It feels... earned from seeing it, because the work was put in to get to that point and it feels like a refreshing treat to be had.
Great video as always!
I wonder if Jirard has ever had to restore his reputation in Grandport because that sum is definitely not little. Love both Octopath games and have recently found an old dark acquaintance again that I still need to defeat in the first game.
The first game is certainly beautiful, but I noticed a huge difference given I've been playing the second game the past few weeks. It's been so long since I've seen Octopath 1, I thought I was seeing beta footage.
I personally liked the disconnected stories, the big issue I had with them is how I was railroaded into using the "protagonist" instead of using the character for their specific chapter and whichever other 3 seemed like a good fit.
My playthrough ultimately hit a wall when I went to try and get one of the secret classes and got stomped. It sorta opened me up to move onto other games.
YES!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS, IF ONLY BECAUSE I SHARE YOUR PAIN!
OM god octopath!!!! it’s literally one of my favourite games and has one of my all time favourite OSTs!!! i can’t wait to watch this yay!
I think the freedom afforded to the player is the greatest strength of this game and why I didn’t finish it. Because I may have slightly ended up way too strong for story fights after exploring end game towns and stealing powerful items before I even got all the characters. Still think this game is awesome tho
I still love that intro.
Love these games, the second one does improve on some things but not by as much as I would have liked. I look forward to the day you review it.
I love this game! How ever the grinding in it is unforgivable at times
Love Octopath Traveler (Need to get 2). Beside from the stories and characters not merging very well (Beside from one or two key points). its a beautiful game, incredible music, amazing battle system (A great continuation of Bravely defaults battle system) and while some of the stories are meh some of them are really good.
I got Octopath II and I am already obsessed. It looks like there will be more crossover between characters in this one, you just have to get a little ways into the game. I am finding that even when I am playing a character I don't like, the stories end up being interesting.
@@elfsong713 I'm happy that they've improved my biggest complaint. It'll be the next game i'll be getting.
The stories collectively felt much better in 2 as well, the only one I didn't care for much was agnea's but it was still a fitting story. Let's not talk about tressa's story cause that was honestly just a mess. Like I loved tressa but chapter 4 felt like it should have been after chapter 2, and chapter 3 after chapter 1. Very strange, and also a really underwhelming final boss that wasn't built up well.
@@darcidious99Agnea, Partitio, and Ochette are all balls of sunshine, but compared to everyone else Agnea's story is FULL BLAST sunshine all the way through.
Rewatching to celebrate Octopath Traveler's 5th Anniversary. I remember seeing it on the store shelves and hearing nothing about it beforehand, and deciding to play it on a whim: that was one of the best decisions I ever made. The battle mechanics feel engaging, the graphics look unique and fresh, and most of the music still makes me ugly-cry. I love this series so much, and I hope there's more to come! #Octopath5thAnniversary 🧭🗺❤
I always said Gau like Ow. And Cyan was the one who was all about saying Thee and thou. Gau just made fun of him in one scene
The music is so great in this game! I hear the 2nd game is even better!
i hadn't thought about this game in such a long time
absolutely love it when it came out
the next five years cant come soon enough octopath 2 has been consuming my life recently and seeing you cover it would be a blast
This review was fantastic! I’m sold! I just finished and fully completed Sea of Stars, it was one of the best little retro style games I’ve played in a very long time. It was so good it made my PS+ sub worth every penny. I was looking for a game with a similar art style and I think this is my next game for sure. Thanks for the great review!
That intro is something special, my man. Pure excellence 😂
You should do an episode on Radiant Historia...absolute masterpiece of a video game
I bought that game almost 3 years ago. Still in my backlog. Time to take a look this week !
14:46 I guess for some parts, but Therion yelling out "I'm ready, are you?!" with epic battle music in the background gets me hyped every time.
BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR THIS
these stories always remind me of dnd backstories no connection in the begging then everything attaches at the end even if it does not make complete sense
Love the game still haven't beat it.
Proud of you.
Huh, i have heard about this Game, but never went through it, so i appreciate the rundown here, thanks for the info,
This was a pretty well put together Video, i wonder what you’ll talk about next, see ya then.
I can't believe you did it. Congratulations my dude
*I've been waiting 4 years for this*
This game is such a tearjerker, what a soundtrack
I literally searched for this video last night and you end up uploading it the next day. What are the odds? Lol
I just recently started playing Octopath Traveler 2 again after putting it down for a month or so and it's kinda funny- usually when I put down a big long game like that it feels like too much trouble to pick it up again and remember what all I was doing, but with this it was pretty easy, and I think the fragmented structure (which is one of the most common criticisms I've heard about the series) actually helps with that. Because at any given time I only have to remember a little bit of story, and the game features a journal that recaps it for you, so it didn't feel too overwhelming to dive back in. Just an interesting positive to the way the story works that I haven't heard many people talk about yet!
Man I got this game years ago andjust never went back to it. I might need to do that. Great Video Jirard and TOVG team.
What I love about the opt1 that 2 doesent have is dynamic chap 1 boss fights depending on how many people you have gathered by that time the chap 1 boss will be a little harder and the fact that you can have a full party in those fights verses opt2 where they aren't involved until after chap1.
First time viewer here. Gotta say, I love your intro animation/special effects.
I would love knowing you complete Blue Dragon on the 360 because the Bestiary achievement was the worst experience for teenager me
Octopath Traveler is a truly underrated gem.
I fell in love with the classic Final Fantasy titles via the Pixel Remaster series. I played through 4, 5, and 6 so far. I’m playing Chrono Trigger now too. I hope Jirard covers more Final Fantasy games one day. FF6 is my favorite.
Nice, good to recap while playing octo 2
Hey! I’m trying to finish this right now!
Oh sweet!
I really need to get into square's switch era pixel rpgs. Octopath, Live A Live and Triangle Strategy all are awesome looking
Glad to be the few to complete it and be grinding on the second one as we speak
Favorite game of all time 💚 loving #2 so far
So glad to see this. Hope you give the 2nd one a try some day, as it took (most) criticisms to heart and improved so much. While the stories are overall disconnected, they at least actually hide the lore that ties them all together in a proper sense rather than "Oh btw here's this big bad out of nowhere". Additionally, the writing is immensely better in the 2nd game, with a proper deconstruction of each of the jobs, rather than the expectation of it. Overall, love both of these games and hope Square Enix makes more in the future.
Octopath Traveler is currently my favourite game on Switch so much so that I 100% the game twice. The aesthetics, the music, the storylines, the characters - all of it culminates to an amazing game that I think of very fondly.
I just 100% Octopath Traveler 2 and it was such an incredible step up from the first game. Hope you give it a look.
Much love
Been playing OT2 and it's amazing 😍
I recently started playing octopath traveler cotc and I love it.
I will admit I don't really strategize that much and just level em up randomly.
I remember the bosses being huge hp sponges kind of turned me away mid/late game. I loved the game but "let me finish this" turns into a massive slog of "when will this end?"
It's not worth the effort, honestly. I regret how much time I wasted with this game.
He's not wrong. When I first saw the trailer and played it, I fell in love with it and play it to the end. I can't wait for part 2.
For better or worse... Olberic and Cyrus have the best battle callouts in this game - to the point it has become a meme in the OT community.
"My Blade is UNBENDING!"
"My focus is UNPARALLELED!"
I swear whenever I read those lines I can basically hear them in my head and want to scream them out myself
@@1unpaid_intern The power of these words are incredible, especially Olberic's.
