I have a signed copy ❤. Get one you won't be disappointed 🤩
Also Beth please do a song or two by Ted Hawkins... something fun like Bad Dog or something blue bluesy sad like "Cold and Bitter Tears" or "Sorry You're Sick "...
Or if you are feeling racy the sexy and hilarious, "You pushed my head away."💖💖💖💖
I cry when I listen to her too.
Have you done reactions to the Warning rock band? They are 3 sisters from Monterrey Mexico and they rock and sing great ballads also.
Willie Nelson: "Two kinds of people, those who love Linda Ronstadt and those who haven't met her".
I have another guess and so I will risk a little real word for you Beth:
Yes, there's someone who would be more than happy , much more than satisfied even if you were only Beth 40% of the time and a basket 🧺 case the rest of the time. Just hypothetically speaking 🗣️ 💖, of course.😍
Also, it's possible, probable even , that you're sometimes too harsh and/or particular in assessing Beth?? Be as generous with you as with others you value so much 💕

Oh man, the 70s. When music had voices like Linda Ronstadt and Karen Carpenter 😍
Go listen to The Warning's Paulina Villarreal Velez sing *23,* Live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX on 08/29/2022. See if you don't hear bits of Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt in her voice. Pau is a drummer, and she's a bilingual Mexican singer-songwriter-composer. After *23,* listen to *Revenant* from the same show, and then find her solo rendition of RadioHead's *Creep,* filmed in black-and-white on an out-of-tune piano with an iPhone. It's raw, real, and gut-wrenchingly emotional.
I will, William. I love finding new voices that will move me. Thank you for taking the time to be so specific.
Ann Wilson.
Ann WIlson, too.
And Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Janis Joplin (died in Oct 1970), Nina Simone.
Linda is one of the few singers who can give me full-body chills. She is truly amazing. Thank you, Beth.
I live in Tucson and Linda comes from a very large musical extended family here. One of her cousins was our next door neighbor and had a local band. We were blessed to see her sing at the annual Tucson Mariachi Festival at her peak. What a treat!
I have a friend who sang in a college group with Linda’s older sister. She sometimes went to the house when they had get togethers. Daisy Libda was you then and cute as a bug.
60 years of chills from the GREAT Linda....love her
This is the most beautiful voice on the planet. Linda Ronstadt is an American treasure. She definitely had a natural gift but she also worked very hard at creating the very best sound she could make. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe this incredible talent. I could listen to her voice endlessly. Her live performance of “Down So Low” will leave you speechless. Great choice and lovely reaction! More of Linda please. 🌺✌️
Her voice is so pure.
@@airenesmiler6624 And she emotes like no one else.
Have you ever heard her in person? Her live voice will reach right down inside you and elbow your soul.
@@jamezkpal2361 Sadly I haven't. Such an amazing singer.
You hear one note from her and get the shivers.
Linda on songs like this stands incredibly still. It seems part of her special ability to be completely present when she sings and to project the emotion of the song. Nothing distracts. She is just so present.
In 1977 I followed Linda Ronstadt to 6 show in 5 States of New England. One of the best summer ever . I went by myself and I went with friends and made friends on the way......🎙🎼🎵
I'm envious,I was married and having fun but this trip sounds fantastic
You had it bad brother. But well chosen
was one of your stops at tanglewood in lenox mass? - i was there :)
The "cry in the voice' - in Spanish, "la voz llorada" is exemplified in the Mexican songs she grew up with from childhood. She started early! That Voice is more than the gift she undeniably posesses - she nurtured it; practiced, worked, trained for decades to achieve greatness. ❤❤❤
Dammit, Beth... I want to thank you for taking one of my favorite songs by one of the most beautiful voices in the world and teaching me to understand why I've been in love with Linda's voice for 50+ years. Her disease is a tragedy, but her voice will live on through the ages. I'm 75 and still listen to her music whenever I can.
This is one of here best concerts. What was great about her was her simple style and bare bones staging and a great band. All about the music
Indeed, she's the vocal equivalent of early Mike Tyson. No frills, consummate knock out
I was driving from Cincinnati to Cleveland years ago late at night. A caller requested this song. Her brother who had had a rough life in and out of trouble and fought drug addiction had just died of an overdose. Whenever I hear this song it reminds of the pain in her voice and the words of the song just fit her story so perfectly.
Linda's genius was her ability to find the emotions behind the lyrics, and immerse herself in them so deeply that they came out naturally in her voice. She lived her songs.
Quite simply the best voice you will ever hear.
She really is one of a kind.Nobody has ever sung all the different types of music and done them all at the top of magnificents and with the most amazing quality of pitch and resonance
That's the thing. She could sit right in the sweet spot of every different genre, and excel at all of them.
The ultimate in versatility.
I first heard Linda Ronstadt in 1970, she had already recorded "Different Drum" with The Stone Pony's, and just recorded "Long Long Time" (one of my favorites, if that is at all possible). The first thought that ran trough my head was just how good she was, and then thinking "this girl is going to be a huge star" (my one and only prediction that came true). She was only mildly known at the time.
As time passed I continued to listen to her music and fell in love with her. I guess like most guy's at the time, if they knew who Linda was, they were in love with her. I know there is some Willie Nelson quote regarding this, but that came later.
In November of 1976, I finally got the chance to see her in concert, at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. I remember hearing that she was going to perform there and asked my friends if they would like to go. I got laughed at, as they commented ... "are you kidding Linda Ronstadt, fu*k no"; these guys were all hard rockers. Well my response was for all of them to go fu*k themselves, and I went to the concert alone. By the way, the best concert I've ever been to, no flash pyrotechnics, no rhythmic dancing, no over-the-top drama, just a great band with the best singer I have ever heard, making beautiful music. Just a joy to my ears!
Sadly, I have never had a chance to see her a second time, but her voice has been an integral part of my life, and will continue to be. So you see, if I come across a little or alot biased, well, it's because I am!
I know that many DON'T share this opinion, there are also many that DO ... but I believe that she is the GREATEST SINGER. I can't say of all time because, all time has not passed, but too me, she is! I will continue to joyfully listen to her music, and hope that she recovers, (perhaps a new cure will emerge).
On a sad and happy note, the fact that she's afflicted with such a condition just breaks my heart, but we can all be so grateful that she has left us such large and eclectic catalog of music. We are all winners to benefit from her immense talent!
Linda ... you are the GREATEST !
Linda is in the top 5 of the greatest voices of all time! That's saying a lot!
Understand that this is going to be subjective. The other 4 voices I would choose, and this is fluid, are Karen Carpenter, John Denver, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra.
@@susanbrynt I would add Johnny Mathis & Gary Puckett & Sarah Vaughn
I agree with the suggestions of the other great singers, but I would add that Linda's mastery of so many different genres is something that very few others could do.
@@susanbrynt For me it goes Linda, Whitney, Ann, Chris Stapleton and Chris Cornell.
@@Smannellites That is what makes Linda special. She may not be the greatest at any specific genre, but she masters the ones she sings. Amazing. I think Karen Carpenter is the most pure singer in her genre. Amazing talent. But, Ronstadt is masterful in many genres. Highest selling Latina album of all time. She is an amazing singer. And, still doesn't get enough credit for her skill and accomplishments.
Light, flawless, open and balanced, full of control and feeling. I loved her work.
My God, I had such a long distance love crush on Linda Ronstadt...she was just so gorgeous and lovable, you just wanted to melt when she sang. No doubt.
Her recordings with Nelson Riddle are my favorites. Simply legendary.
Best female singer of all time. She has a voice like a brass bell. So pure. Thank you for this video
James you obviously have not heard Lucy Thomas sing !!! Lucy tops them all !!!!
Johnny B. Goode's sister
Love, love me some Linda. I grew up as a teenager during this era and remember when she was in her prime. Absolutely beautiful voice of an angel.
My favorite female singer of all time , period. Among all the amazing female singers of that time period Linda was the Queen. She could literally sing any genre of music.
OOOOOH man. I'm with you, @bethroars, that last "let somebody love you" brought tears to my eyes.
I was fortunate to see her perform live several times, including her Mariachi show. Holy Cow! She has and always will be my absolute favorite singer.
I’ve heard someone describe her voice as having amazing velocity. She can go across the range and still cover several octaves from almost a whisper to amazing power.
She really challenged audio engineers to set up their compressors correctly for her voice. She could easily exceed the dynamic range of professional tape recording machines and the analog mic pre-amps of the day.
Yes! I love everything she has ever sung, but the stuff she did with Nelson Riddle, on many of those songs, she sings quietly, but when the emotion of the song demands it, she instantly opens up and this amazing voice just fills the space. I saw her perform that music with a full symphony orchestra back in the late 80s or early 90s, sitting about 4 rows back, and she was just amazing.
Linda Ronstadt, Karen Carpenter, Bobby Hatfield and John Denver are in a class by themselves. So pure and beautiful. Thank you for reacting to this amazing singer and this song. She draws pictures with her voice.
I would have to add Vince Gill and Allison Krauss to the list of pure voices
Yes there are so many to add. I like your choices and I would add Gloria Loring too.@@brianbrekke9500
I believe The Carpenters also has an amazing cover of “Desperado”
I learned virtually everything I know about music from listening to Linda Ronstadt growing up in the 70s. She is still my ride or die. I absolutely adore her and she influenced the music that I enjoy today from country/Americana to rock. How is it possible this woman has been snubbed by the Country Music Hall of Fame? It's a national travesty! I am glad you brought up the sadness that so many of us feel that we have lost her magical voice. Can you imagine all the songs she would be doing?
It seems country music business people are snobby. Sad.
She is an outspoken liberal. Liberals are not popular in country music.
Linda's liberal politics, Mexican roots, and counter-culture friends probably didn't sit well with the Nashville establishment. She was a free spirit, more in tune with the L.A. scene, socially, than with image conscious Nashville in the '70s and '80s. Their loss… But in the end, she didn't need them. She made her mark across many genres.
She snubbed the country music establishment by being a strong willed independent woman in a time when female country singers were very much shoehorned into certain songs and style.
@@TheBigburcie As Linda herself said: "and I'm the only country singer that really grew up in a ranch"
I will be 60 next month and I have loved her for 50 of my 60 years - both she and Barbra Streisand have brought me more happiness musically than anyone. I also had an aunt who died of the same affliction. Linda has now which just brings it home for me, and my heart breaks when I hear Linda sing even more than it used to when she was healthy.
I too have loved her since the first time i heard "you're no good" 50 years ago!
When The Eagels sing this song it feels like we are listening to the titular Desperado lamenting his life and becoming resigned to his choices.
When Linda sings it, it feels like we are listening to a woman who is desperately in love with the Desperado and is trying to show him that it's not too late to change. Imagine a strong beautiful woman (which Linda certainly is!) sitting you down and giving you a piece of her mind, including the occasional sob or outburst.
Both versions are incredibly powerful, and the slight difference in perspective has an outsized effect on the overall feeling of the song.
Linda is 'the queen of hearts" ❤❤❤❤
We now bow and curtsey in admiration to this wonderful singers contributions to our enjoyment of life !
Great post Beth. We love your analysis and comments on country music. From deep in the heart of Texas thank you !! Linda Ronstadt Ronstadt is in a league of her own.
One of the most gorgeous voices to bless us mere mortals on this planet.
She charted on country, rock, and latin charts at the same time. Amazing performer
Your emotional reactions to the beauty of her voice brings me a deeper understanding and appreciation of her interpretation of the lyrics. Not only this video but your others one also makes me a better listener to this art. For that growth in me I can not thank you enough.
Beth is a treasure. ❤
Tucson's own, "Barefoot Princess". Since the late 1960s. She sounds even better in, Spanish.
It was either barefoot or Cowboy boots in the early days. Lol
Linda was my first album cover crush, then hearing her voice just made me fall even more in love with her. In coming full circle, some of the members of Linda's band came to her and asked if they could go out on their own. She gave them her blessing and they formed the Eagles. And here she is covering one their best songs. This song I do consider as one of my biographical songs.
Boy, do I remember THAT album!
I've had a major crush on Linda since the 70's. She could sing any style and make it better. So many great songs!
Canciones de mi Padre is a MASTERCLASS in vocal technique! I don't speak Spanish but I LOVE trying to sing along with her. Such a workout!!
Beth, ..IF you do A&R to anything off this album, I suggest La Cigarra because I love her PERFECTLY controlled extended notes. I NEED to also say that EVERY vocalist should examine this whole album in detail.
Queen of the Ballads
I remember as a child listening to Linda on the country stations. Then she showed she could sing any genre but the country stations still played her. I believe, to this day, country music got more diversified due to Linda. Best voice hands down. When a voice can move you to tears, it’s pretty special. Damn you Parkinson’s! You robbed all of us, but especially her.
Linda Ronstadt never wrote the songs she sang. But she had the finest voice of her generation, so she owned the songs.
A lot of singers didn't really write the songs that had their names on them. There were ghostwriters. What's important is bringing that song to life. Linda and singers like Frank Sinatra didn't have to write their own songs to be great.
My favorite female vocalist since the 70s. She could sing the dictionary and sound good.
Mine too!
A beautiful voice. And two beautiful women in this video.
It is so sad Linda can no longer sing.
I have been listening to her music since the '70s.
Simply the best!
My god. What a performance. never mind her outstanding popular music career, her collaboration with Nelson Riddle was incredible. What a voice. What a talent. What a lady.
Thank you for this video. Linda is the GOAT.
And not to mention she’s drop dead gorgeous!
Beth - you did such a great job of showing some of the different aspects of Linda's multi-faceted career.
She was the queen of pop music in the 70s... but she did so many other great things later in her career. Thanks for pointing that out.
My two favorite women! Beautiful and talented beyond belief!
Thanks again Beth. Another great appraisal of Linda ❤x
Thanks so much !
She is just amazing! La Charreada is a fabulous song and shows off her mariachi chops. She spent a lot of time studying to get the pronunciation right, as she is not a native speaker. Her talent knows no bounds!❤❤
I was one of the millions who had Linda's poster on their bedroom wall. I memorized nearly every record she made. I absolutely love your knowledge and respect for this dear, precious lady. I am so grateful for having grown up when I did, with some of the best musicians.... and Linda among them. What a great review!
Linda did the cover and made her former struggling backup band famous... I literally wept when I heard the devastating news of her illness. Over the years I saw her over 20 times. If I was going to be in a city on business the first thing I did was look up to see if she was 2 hours driving if so, off I went
They already had 3 hit songs on their first album in US and CAN. Witchy Woman broke the Top 10.
Linda excels in Canciones de mi padre. She pours out the emotions there and the range of her voice is amazing!
I always loved Linda’s voice and songs.
This is such a wonderful analysis Beth.Linda is the finest voice that has ever graced my fortunate ears..There is nothing she couldn't sing.A true virtuoso with a Stradivarius voice.
She was a true master of voice. Just beautiful.
The (music) world has been blessed with the music, performances and voice of this lady. She got it!!!❤❤❤
This is a great analysis of the fabulous Linda Ronstadt. Thanks for all the research and video editing you (and/or your team) did for this most informative video.
MORE LINDA RONSTADT PLEASE!!!!
Living in England at the time.I heard Linda’s version of this song before the eagles and still love hers the best.
Linda is a treasure. My favorite singer ever.
I heard her sing this in Atlanta in ‘72 or ‘73. I was 15 feet away. Her album with this on it hadn’t yet been released. Loved the Eagles’ Desperado album. This just freaking floored me! Remember it vividly to this day! Saw her twice more.
Linda gives me goosebumps every time she sings. Incredible voice.. Her control and power is insane
Linda is my #1 for many years. She was incredible
I saw her in 1983… I loved every moment and thank you for spotlighting her 🙏🏻
Shout out to Peter Asher, for helping Linda to pick the right songs for her to sing. (Peter and Gordon)
Such tone and timbre. She has such a richness in her voice. I am fascinated by nasal construction, and how the nose and sinuses impact the sound of a singers voice. Streisand is another one that comes to mind. Beautiful and timeless.
linda was not known for song writing, but she was one of the best interpreters of song anywhere - this is a perfect example.
i'm the original desperado she makes me cry like a baby
I love seeing how you enjoy this so much. I grew up as a young teenager listening on my headphones to her records. It put me in another world to listen to her voice. ❤
Only the greatest get to have the Eagles for a backing band , magnificent rendition and song
The Eagles felt the same about Linda, she was instrumental in their creation.
Such a beautiful voice and a timeless talent. She transcends genres. Listen/react to "Poor Wandering One" from Pirates of Penzance for a gorgeous display of her Opera range. The Eagles were at their peak when I was in high school. I always thought was amazing that a Country-Western band made such a big splash in rock music. Their version of this song is even more Country than Linda's.
Ronstadt grew up with music but had no formal training until later in her life when she turned her talent to light opera. She was always a disciplined artist with a versatile and powerful instrument. Even when she was making hits, I don’t think people really understood how skillful a singer she was. She was so natural, you could relate to the emotion and take the gorgeous tone for granted.
Linda can sing anything, and do it perfectly 🤘
Her voice always wrecks me. She did a great job on Pirates of Penzance too. So versatile.
Linda didn't need a Microphone. My ex and I in our misspent youth saw her in Berkeley at the Greek Theater about the time of this recording. We were on the knoll behind the seating area with a fantastic view of her and the stage. And even though we were probably 100 to 130 ft from the stage she at time's out sung the instruments and that wasn't because of her microphone. The general acoustics were exceptional. We all love her we all miss her and we are all thankful we had her. ❤
Linda didn't mess around. She just stepped right up to the microphone and blew people away.
You have commented on her multiple style of singing but I have one I bet you have never heard. Linda sang "backup" on a friends album. That was Maria Muldaur and the album was "Waitress in the Donut Shop" and the song is "Gringo En Mexico". The album was released in 1974 and several songs got extensive airplay from it. I think you would love the whole album.
The same can be said for her work on the two Trio albums with Parton, and Harris. She refrained from doing the lead on most of the songs. Additionally, she was a great partner in her many duets, never trying to out sing the other vocalist.
Oh, hell, yeah, I LOVED that album. Maria got heavy airplay on our college radio station that year. Thanks for reminding me of it. I just played that song for the first time in 50 years!
She puts her "heart on her sleeve" with this performance. She keeps warning her mate/best friend not to wait too long for someone, or that someone won't be there when you stop. It felt to me at the end, when she was singing slower, like she was saying it might already be too late. You can see why a lot of us back in the day had a crush on her.
I think Linda’s first manager John Boylan said it all. John said “Linda, the voice that filled the room”. Kind of says everything about Ms. Ronstadt’s vocal talent. One of the best female singers of all time.
It is so heart-breaking that Linda became ill and can't really perform anymore. From what I understand, she LOVED singing. IMHO, she is probably one of the top 5 vocalists ever! Such a lovely human being! (And, cute as a button too!)
Shes an American treasure. Sadly her voice has been silenced by illness but her catalog is huge. One of my favorites is "la Charreada" and i dont speak a word of socially acceptable spanish.
Beth, I love how emotional you get about songs. Your beautiful in many ways.
saw her do this live with Don Henly and Glen Frye ! Lot of people had tears that nite! Truly amazing experiance!
Two comments: Linda has the best vibrato of any singer. It’s not overdone, and it’s not underdone. And YOU, when you repeat a word or phrase…. It’s like someone is playing a tape recording of that word or phrase. You just NAIL it. Wow!
Thanks Brent!
Your analysis is so much more than that. You are living vicariously though the song and the singer's every minuscule emotion. I was moved.
Just Linda and a piano. I don’t think she ever took a Lesson until she did the Spanish language albums.
Being a somewhat nerdy compiler of musical lists, I place Linda Ronstadt in my top ten artists/bands of all time - the only one in that list who was not a prolific songwriter. Her interpretation of other artists' songs is second to none and her voice was as good as it gets. Loved her since first hearing Different Drum - and that was before I even knew how drop-dead gorgeous she was.
I was so lucky to have seen and heard her live at Subiaco Oval, Perth Western Australia in the late 1970s.
Superb analysis, kiddo..
Hi there ms. Beth Linda she has a beautiful and an angelic voice. One of the favorite singer here in the philippines..thanks ms. Beth!!!!! I want more.love you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love this live version better than the studio one.
Linda Rondstat always seemed to add a very slight yodel to her songs. I know that other people wrote them, but she owed them.
Anything Linda Ronstadt instantly renders full thumbs, loads of stars, neck hairs standing, and ears that weep. She is an amazing vocalist!
Her voice is the 8th wonder of the world
My favourite Eagles song.
Gives me shivers every time l listen to her. Brilliant.
Linda is a phenom, for sure. The technique and emotional availability is so rare. Another vocalist you might consider in this category is Jennifer Warnes. In particular, her album, "Famous Blue Raincoat--The Songs of Leonard Cohen" is a spectacular showcase.
