I've always loved Indigo girls singing this. the original is calm, emotionless and plain. this one makes it a song about love and loss, and she blows the roof off with it. This has all the heart and soul that the original lacks.
Mark Knopfler wrote and preformed the song, but until Amy did it, it meant nothing, now its one of my favorite songs of all time. In my top ten, its the first song to make me cry, but only by her, to this day ten years after, she brings tears to my eyes. I love this song and her for opening that in me. Love Erik.
i saw them for the first time at franklin and marshall with my best friend, and their sound is a large part of the soundtrack of my life, thanks emily and amy!
i like both versions, Dire and Indigo... the killers one lacks feeling is like a reading of the Dire one... so going back to the 2 versions... the Dire one is so sad in a infatuated yet resigned kind of way... so lovely... and the indigo is so desperate and angry like a "how could you kill this, b...ch" kind of way... the words are the same but the feeling's are so different.
What everyone has to understand is....Art has no rules.....you take something and change it to make it your own. Sid Vicious did that with "my way" and everyone went nuts....whether they liked it or hated it there was a reaction. That's part of what art is about....getting a reaction.
I think it's artistic impression and impression form the artists. And it was the first time I heard this song by the Indigo Girls and loved it and still do. I heard it after from Dire Straits and didn't like their version. I felt Amy gave it more passion and desperation and more of a tragic effect, like it was suppose to have. Personal preference, I loved it 20 years ago I love it now.
The Indigo Girls are just so "Indigo"...you know? That's their thing...Indigo...so indigo...so so indigo...I mean...they're just capture that "indigo" thing...you know? I've never felt such "indigo" it hurts...it smarts...it stings...Indigo is what permanence brings to mark the occasion...it spreads out and gets dark like "Indigo"...I meant it's realy so "Indigo" of you to say that to me at this time...it's like "Indigo"...you know....it's probably imprinted in my heart by now...wouldn't be srpz
I did not know I was trying to recieve an english grade here. Thanks for insulting my songwriting ability though. I can appreciate your opinion, as it is unique. For the last 12 years all I have recieve is support, and thousands of show dates, LOL!!! Look you are obviously a Dire Straits fan, and I am too! However, Mr. Knophler has no passion in his performance of this song, his song! Passion is what brings this song to life! Can you insult me again, don't know why, but I liked it! :)
Ha, Romeo and Juliet is a big song because Amy Ray made it huge! This song was on Rite of Passage. Mark Knophlers version sucked balls, and no one paid it any attention, accept Amy! This is the version that my friend Cole's Whalen, "I" Sean Smith, Edwin McCain, and many other artist cover! The Indigo Girls inspired a generation. Rock on Amy you are AMAZING!!!
SORRY DUDE, maybe my comment was a little unfair to Mark Knophler and Dire Straights. I like the band, but I "HATE" there version of this song! I know they wrote it, but as a songwriter myself I know that sometime it takes someone else to make your work great. Look at what Hendrix did for "All Along The Watch Tower". Afterwards, Dylan copied Hendrix's version because it was better!

This song was my first introduction to Indigo Girls and I never looked back.
This song makes me nostalgic and weepy...that is why I love it.

Melvin, seriously thanks. That was incredible and an amazing recording. Takes me back to .... A Younger time.
Amy Ray makes this song an agonizing classic of rock n' roll urgency. She blows the windows out with the song.
after listening to this vrsion, I started loving this song! great one!!

This is so so so much better than the original and the Killers version. This version can make me cry...

AMY RAY Captures the pain and agony of love !!!

The Indigo Girls version of this song is a fucking force of nature!!!!!!!!
Mark, Amy, The Killers, Matt... Steve Earle you're on deck and Chris Cornell, you're in the hole.

shouldn't we call this version Juliet & Juliet?

this version kicks dire straits ass.
It's quite passionate compared to dire straights - but I've a soft spot for Lisa Mitchell, to be honest. This is a very close second...

I don't like it.
Seriously, I LOVE it.
