The new 24” iMac is here and Apple has, understandably, put the M1 chip in it. But that raises an important question: if you want a desktop Mac, should you go for the 24” iMac or the M1 Mac mini? I’ve got the answer!

I wouldn't get the Mac Mini since the bluetooth issues with this device still haven't been fixed properly.

I love the look of the new iMac; however I find Apple's marketing quite annoying: upspend $200 to get TouchID (which is a killer feature) and ethernet?. Just give us everything in one package, please, Apple. All the bells, one price. Want more than 512 GB storage? Here's our external storage options... Tired of it.
It’s possible I may end up getting one of each (Mac mini to go in my bedroom, as I already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and i would only have to plug in 4 cables to get it up and running (Power, Ethernet, HDMI, and 1 USB) as I have a KVM switch
The iMac will be going downstairs (my mum will most likely use it for family history stuff)
You hit the nail on the head: The display is just unbelievably good and can only be imitated with an external monitor for a lot of money. Personally, I (and I think many others) don't need a lot of computing power, but I do need a great viewing, listening and typing experience. The iMac seems to me to be a good overall package.
I've had an iMac 21.5 for over ten years, it died a month ago. Had Rokit 5 Monitors, Keyboard and Mouse. Went with the Mac Mini M1. Now I've got 2 - HP LG 24" Screens. all the power, and no complaints. Even if I wanna bring my cpu to a buddies place. I hook it up to their sound source, screen/tv and away I go. Very Happy with it.

A bit of a let down for me is the feature they removed in 2014: TDM, or the ability to use the iMac's gorgeous display as an external monitor
Personally I prefer colour accurate, high pixel density screens over larger ones and your choice in 4K 24" or less is very limited.
Once you're used to these, you can't go back. Another, old pain: in Apple's book 1299USD becomes 1449€ in mainland Europe. I know.. taxes, but still.. 1$ = 0.83€

Very informative. I went with the Mac Mini as I really wanted a 32” monitor. I also added the Satechi stand and hub plus 2TB of storage. Meets all my needs and saved a lot over a comparable 24” iMac.

Great video again. I opted for the M1 Mac Mini and bought my own new 4K screen. I also have a M1 MacBook Air. I didn’t think overall I would get much for buying the iMac compared to the Mac Mini and can also connect other devices to the 4K screen. Already had a magic keyboard and mouse before buying the Mac Mini so didn’t have to get anything apart from a new screen.

My 2017 iMac was getting long in the tooth and I was going to buy an M1 iMac. I knew I would be bothered by the smaller screen size so in the end I got a 27" LG Ultrafine monitor and connected it to my M1 Air. So far very pleased. It even has an integrated 1080P camera.

Great video Mark! I found the 16" MB and a 24" LG Ultra Fine monitor with a magic keyboard and track pad are my best solution. Granted, not the most cost effective. What I like about it is it's a desk top when I want a desk top and when it's time to go, all I do is unplug it from the monitor and I have a laptop to take with me. It kills two birds with one stone. Love CleanMyMac as well. really like the tool bar dashboard that monitors power usage, heat, internet speed and more. To me it's a must have app. Cheers!

I went ahead and ordered the 512GB 16GB of RAM 8 core GPU iMac. Part of what threw me over the top was the display. Having that beautiful 4.5K display attached to an M1 processor is going to be quite a nice experience coming from a 2017 13” MacBook Pro!

I have an IMac 27 2020 (clearly Intel one) and a MBP 2015 which I carry around but I use it in clamshell mode in office also. I am thinking of buying a Mac-mini so I can replace the MBP in my office. The IMac for pleasure (FCPX, motion and stuff plus the great monitor) and the Mac mini for work (mostly documents) hooked up to a 27 Dell ultra sharp. I think the Mac mini is the perfect entry level computer. But I think I will wait for the next processor generation. I love the fact that you’re addressing to “normal” people :) many of the other channels are getting too much in the specifics as if we all are little tech specialists
I think you pretty much nailed the issues there - great perspective.
I've just made my choice about 3½ hours back. I'm going for the iMac as a replacement for a 27" earliest 5K i5 Fusion Drive Mac (it's not retiring, it's just repurposing since I need (for business) something reliable for the next 4-6 years, but don't need heavy video editing etc)
I was reminded early in my decision process that the 27" iMac purchase was all about the "it just does it" approach - and generally has proven good. But I have little office space and am adding cameras and microphones to get into conference calls etc. I've little room for adding in screen, sound system, on top of the microphone in the way and the fiddling to plug headphones into the back and rigging up iPhone as a camera from time to time. All a lot of hassle.
Then there's the sound - I pimped up with Boom 3D and it is "good". But the screen itself has been just beautiful right from day one. And there's the rub! What would you exchange that beautiful 5K screen for? Well I'm happy to "slum it" with a 24" 4.5K - I'm sure it will be just fine - and I will easily be adding a 12.9" iPad Pro as a sidecar!
So, the Apple screen - computational amazing camera technology - amazing computational speaker technology - the microphones should just be the best too - and the M1. And it all comes in ONE PACKAGE. I just didn't see the need for waiting for M1X and M2 like all the tech reviewers seem to be wetting their pants over - I had the business case up and running and this should meet my brief. Specced up a bit - and the answer you're all waiting for? Purple.
For others I can totally see the logic of the Mini, though. Whichever way - what amazing kit to choose from!!

Got my M1 mini before the iMac came out. Happy with it but I have a fairly cheap Dell 4K screen that takes almost 15 seconds to turn on when I wake the computer. My neighbor has the new iMac. A touch of the mouse or keyboard wakes the computer instantly. What I wouldn't give for that. (My video drawing tablet turns on in less than a second, so its not the computer.)

I'm trying to answer that question right now, and it really comes down to the display for me. The configuration for both would be the same: 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, keyboard, mouse, and display. The mini with a 5K LG display comes in at about $2800, while the 24" iMac is about $2400. However, a 4K display knocks about $1000 off the mini's price. In fact, I could get 3 or 4 quality 4K displays for the price of one 5K display. Of course, I could always wait for the 30" iMac, which is what I really want, but can't really wait much longer. It's a tough decision.
The problem I have with the iMac is that I can't use the screen for other stuff. For example I can't connect an Xbox or gaming system to the screen , I would need another screen. So might as well get a Mac mini
We should be able to connect any other device to an iMac, and use its screen.
Give up gaming.

The biggest problem is the 23.5" screen on the iMac. It might be a great screen but it's too small for a lot of applications.

I think the biggest pro-argument for the macmini is: if you already have a desktop setup with display, keyboard, mouse, speakers - or if you´re thinking about upgrading those (i want that 32" ASUS 4k ultra-low latency gaming monitor; i want to use my mechanical/fancy rgb keyboard etc) than the mac mini is more readily usable.
Same if you are thinking about a home-entertainment setup: hook up your macmini to your 70" tv, your stereo, your dolby surround sound system - or just unplug your macmini OR get another macmini for the office: 2 macminis are cheaper and offer 3x the IO than 1 imac gives!
For me, the display is very important - I would probably go for the iMac. but I won´t, waiting for the 30" iMac.
If it doesn´t start at 2.500$ I might actually get it.
Other than that, my M1 MacBook Air goes strong. I´ve already started using it way more than my 16" MBP and my windows gaming Laptop/ home setup.

Great video 👍 I just ordered a Imac and opted for the 16gb ram and a 1tb hard drive. Coming from an old 09 imac it was a no brainier for me the screens on the iMac have always impressed me. I like the size of the old 21.5 so this should be great. Looking forward to Learning to do some video editing as i have a DJI mini 2 drone and have been using my iPhone.

The 24" M1 iMac base model only has one fan. That's part of the lower price point along with the ports. Plus the CPU is throttled back. Plenty of people have already talked about it even though Apple hasn't disclosed it on the product page.
Your review was interesting in retrospect.... I bought an M1 Mac mini to replace a 27" iMac before the M1 iMac had been released as it was on offer. It took me ages to find a suitable monitor but in the end I went for a 2K 32 inch usb-c ThinkVision monitor. Of course the decent monitors had neither decent speakers nor a webcam; I got a Logi 720 webcam which on paper is better than the old iMac webcam but in reality I find worse. But what is making me regret the choice of the Mini over the iMac is the speakers. I thought I could get by with using a HomePod as the speaker but whilst fine for Apple Music, was really troublesome. I connected a Sony speaker, which works perfectly from the Lenovo monitor port, but one can't control the volume with the keyboard and if the monitor goes to sleep the sound/music stops. I then tried connecting the speaker to the headphone port of the Mac mini but there is a horrid hum so no good. The speaker also has Bluetooth but I struggled a bit with that. Overall, I think the iMac would have been better though with my eyesight getting worse I may not have been happy with the smaller screen. Having already bought an M1 MacBook Air, having the TouchID is great so definitely agree with your comment.
Interesting that you talked about cleaning your Mac. The Mac mini is much easier to clean, physically I mean. You can open up a Mini much more easily than you can a iMac so cleaning out the dust from a Mini will be much easier.
i tried mac mini m1 16gb with macbook air m1 16 gb. and macbook pro i7 1gb 2019 version. Mini smoked the hell out air and my macbook pro in rendering 4k videos and exporting my 43 mb raw files from sony. There was a considerable time difference. The screen of 24 imac is beautiful for sure.. but then i have 32' 4k ips benq and 24' 2k ips benq monitors. I finally went for mini m1 16 gb last week.
Mac Mini is more fun to “set up”... I like picking OLED TV for a monitor. Picking the perfect keyboard. Selecting a mouse...and a track pad. Selecting various hubs and hard drives to use with the Mini. If you have kids and want a simple small footprint for a smaller desk, the iMac is awesome. But for my office, I loved the whole process of the Mac Mini. Thanks Mark... good video.

I’ve been trying to decide which option is better me. I’d realized that the price difference between the mini and the 24” isn’t just the monitor, but also better speakers, webcam, keyboard, mouse, and possibly the gigabit connector ( which I would probably use). Aaaaaand I’m now at the point in the video where you mention some of these things. 👍🏻

I have a 2012 Duo core Mini that will get retired as soon as the 24” iMac comes to my door. I’m moving down in screen size from 27” to 24” but what I’m gaining (besides the new M1 SOC) is built in speakers, a web cam, and fewer cables. Cable space is at a premium in my office so I can ditch the Bose speaker power and audio cables, and ditch the HDMI and power cables to the monitor while also getting back a little more desk space. I’ll use the old Magic Mouse for the iPad to use on zoom calls, and keep the Magic Keyboard as a backup.
I am waiting on my Mac Mini. I already had the LG screen, trackpad and magic keyboard and that was being used to support my MBP 16 (which is going in for a repair immediately the MM turns up - missing TB and crashes on sleep). Otherwise the iMac would have been the most logical choice.
A year on I bought a 16/256 refurbished Mac mini to use at home so that I don’t have to keep carrying my work’s MBP13 16/512 around as I have to walk a good few miles even using the bus.
It is brilliant with my new Apple Studio nano glass 27 inch monitor and most importantly can also drive my old Dell P 2715Q. My MBP13 can only drive one monitor. The great StarTech hub at work can somehow drive 2 monitors but the Studio Display need a Thunderbolt rather than DP or HDMI. Add on my Logitech MX3 keyboard for Mac, MX3 mouse and an Apple Trackpad and it’s a fantastic set up for the vast majority of my work as an Engineering Lecturer and for AV.
In contrast my daughter is a hospital doctor and got a stylish blue 8/512 iMac 24 which fits with he decor and she loves that too. It’s good enough for her to create medical presentations, papers and the camera for teaching trainees remotely. So both are excellent but the extra screen real estate, superb colour, brightness and better speakers of the Studio Monitor are the game changers for me. I know it cost a more than my daughter’s iMac but my keyboard is far better for professional use than any Apple one and I have a multi year upgrade path.
My son is still using his decade old Apple 27 in display every day. So if you want longer lived tech, think about a new Studio. Over 5 years it will cost me the same as a pint of posh lager a week after work…..and it’s the healthy alternative….
Apple monitors have always been great. Been using an iMac 27’ non retina since 2013. Want to upgrade to aapl M1. Have you tried connecting the M1mini or Air to your old iMac with Luna Display over ethernet? ie I want to use my 2013 27” as a secondary display for a 24’ M1iMac.

Thanks for the comparison but I still have a dilemma. My Mac mini M1 plan was to use the same screens as for home working and switch between home use of mini and work use of hp laptop. However, seems many cables are needed to connect dual screens switching between a Mac mini and Windows laptop. Any tips about KVM switch / docking station that would do this job? Thanks. I've not found anything concrete enough for someone with an average tech knowledge to be sure the Mac mini is soomething I can work with. Just trying to avoid having 3 setups at home (my husband also working from home)! Thanks.

Great video, amazing info you've shared, thanks! Id like to just add, I do think that the 2 fans in the iMac will go a bit further to increase the power of the iMac itself. When you look at benchmarks, the power structure from lowest to highest performance is in line with fans and space for heat. Mac mini usually outperforms the MacBook Pro and both usually outperform the Air, all due to fans and available space for heat, where the Mac mini has the most available space. The iMac having 2 fans should have it outperform the the Mac mini, at least a little bit. Also, you mentioned the Touch ID keyboard that comes with the iMac, you can just purchase that keyboard itself and use it on the Mac mini, not sure if you mentioned that or not, but its worth repeating, it can be used with all M1 Macs. As it so happens, those two devices are exactly what I decided between and I watched all your videos on them and decided for the iMac. I wanted something semi-portable that I could move around in the house if I want to, as one component instead of a whole bunch of components, and I’m really looking forward to the speakers, too, besides the screen.

😊 I have a space in the house where all my music making stuff is and a home office space where the desk can be a bit cramped and a spacious table in the dining room that is free in the evenings. So currently I set up my large iPad with keyboard and trackpad and power supply depending on what I want to do or who I want to do something with. This 24” iMac should be portable enough to also allow me to do that and that was a major factor in my decision to order this one and not wait for the upcoming bigger iMac.
Portability is a good point. Considering the new magsafe connection, I wish they had tucked a small battery in it to complete the iPad-like presence. How cool would it be if the stand had a magnetic connection and you could pick it up and walk away?
Love the video Mark - I’m wanting to get the Mac mini as an upgrade from my 2016 Mac Book pro ... I already have the desktop, keyboard and mouse but I’m scared about all the Bluetooth issues people are having with Mac mini ... any issue regarding this would really hurt my work.... it’s what’s causing me to hold off for now ...
Thanks, David. You might be ok, because recent macOS updates have made a big improvement. I'd give one a go - Apple has a good return policy if its not for you.

@@emmanuel1163 They're referring to the T2 security chip inside some Macs that allow for Touch ID + some other security features. If the Mac Mini doesnt have it, then the touch ID simply wouldnt work.
Does the monitor you used with Mac Mini use significant CPU if at all? Are some monitors "self powered" as to avoid using CPU? Thanks
I bought an M1 Mac mini last year so was interested to see if I should have waited for the iMac. I was surprised to see that the base level iMac is less well specced than the £699 Mac mini. The equivalent spec iMac is £750 more not 600 (ports and processor equivalent). I take your point about the screen so will be interested to get a look at the iMac screen to see how much better it is than my 4k Dell (which cost considerably less than £750). My guess is that Apple see the main selling point as design. That is why they have emphasised the ultra slim design and the colours. It will be interesting to see benchmarks. Are the two fans really for the screen, screens don't get hot. I bet the ultra slim design means those fans will have to work a lot harder than the ones on my Mac mini, which I have yet to hear.

The only time I need more ram, storage or fans on my m1 MacBook air is to run windows on parralells and trying to game on it. Otherwise base spec will do awesome on everything I do day to day.
Can I connect an extra more monitor with the iMac M1?
I bought an M1 MacBook Air and then saw these new iMac's and they look amazing! but more than happy with the MacBook Air.
What are the actual box(packaging) dimensions?
The resale value of the iMac's keyboard and mouse is so high that I was able to easily sell mine (not a fan of the default mouse and keyboard) and bought a Keychron keyboard and a nice mouse.
One thing to note is that. The ability to adjust brightness right from keyboard. I am just start using an external monitor connecting with my 8 yeas old MacBook Pro. I am loosing my mind that how annoying it is that I have to reach to the monitor, goes through a bunch of steps just to adjust the brightness. The monitor is 34" 21:9 3440x1440 and I love it for productivity and multitasking. I brought this up because if you want to adjust brightness right from the keyboard you have the option from LG UltraFine display that they maid for Apple but they are not ultrawide. Personally I would get the base M1 Air connecting with ultrawide external monitor, Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

First time mac user. I bit the bullet and went with mini after being dissapointed with specs and pricing on imac, last straw was pastel colors.
I dont know why basic ports like usb and ethernet had to be upmarketed for $1500 model its not revolutionary my previous $500 dell had a ton of usb ports and microsd slot. Also if I factored in storage options even going ala carte would be more expensive on imac vs mini due to the starting price. For a couple hundred dollars less I have a 28" 4k monitor slim black bezel, usb/microsd/ssd hub, similar wireless aluminium keyboard, soundbar and room in budget for webcam and ssd down the road while having money leftover. With the imac I would have started at $1500 just to get same gpu cores as mini and ethernet + buying encloure + buying ssd, and thats not even factoring microsd.

Will the MacPaw be able to delete my searchbarron and searchmarquis from my computer? I've done every tutorial on youtube to fix this, but have had no luck.
I would add that the Mac Mini also has the advantage that by adding a matching hub, you can increase the number of ports and add a lot more storage for very little money. You could use the same hub for the iMac but it wouldn't look as good.

Touch ID and the extra 2 ports sold the slightly upper level imac for me.. there are other differences but they were the two. The colours are no interest to me.. yes the rear colours are nice. But, i wont see them as the computer will be against a wall. I went for the silver. Yes, the cost of a quality screen for the mac mini is a factor too, I would have to buy a new one and they cost. I expect the computer to arrive in 3 weeks, which give s me time to get the peripherals I foresee needing.

Good that you covered the comparison between them now, but the biggest difference for me is more about not now, but the future...buy a decent screen now, and it potentially lasts way way longer than the computer itself...2 or 3+ upgrades, that doesn't apply to iMac...new screen and cost each time.
True... but in my experience, iMacs last FOREVER ;)
Can you say which one is quieter ? Would just surf in the internet or watch videos on youtube in 4k

im actually starting to wonder if the 7 core GPU ones actually have an 8 core GPU but one of the cores has been deactivated, prehaps because the core is faulty (a similar thing is done with flash storage, but with flash storage there are deliberatly extra storage elements designed into it for this purpose, so that if a few are found to be faulty before it leaves the factory, they can program the controller to not use those elements and instead use the extra elements, and it would only be a QC fail if too many elements were faulty)
The non-adjustable screen was something I was looking for in a new iMac so was quite disappointed. I decided to keep my existing 24 inch monitor and bought a refurbished Mac mini for £930. I may get the larger iMac when it come out.
You can order the iMac with a vesa adaptor so you can hook it up to an arm.
@@midnightsnack1306 yeah I know but Doesn’t really fit the design aesthetic. I don’t know why they can’t have an adjustable iMac a bit like the pro display bit simpler and more cost effective. I think this is a glaring omission and annother one of those silly design over functionality Apple has been guilty of in recent year.
I like the new iMac, however my desk has limited space, I have got a 27 inch LG 5K Ultrafine (2018 MBP 15 inch for work) and a 32 inch Samsung 4K (PC&PS4), it leave me Mac Mini the only option. Don't know how good the new iMac 24's screen compare to those 2, haven't got a chance to the store to take a look at the actual one.
Thank you for almost making up my mind :) I think I am best off buying both of them since I have a good external ASUS 4k monitor, 27inch. Not sure if I get used to using 24inch imac

@@MarkEllisReviews Maybe finding the threshold where the 7-core cracks under pressure as compared to the 8-core would clear things up? Like a overload test in benchmarks and then some real world scenarios. I am looking to up my game in video editing and want to make sure that the extra $ is worth it. Thanks!

I've had the iMac for 2 years now. Now I bought a Mini with M2 Pro. Toch ID keyboard and I am very happy. As a monitor, a Samsung M8 32 inch for €420. If something breaks now, I can exchange individual parts and I can upgrade individual parts.
Traded my mid 2011 IMac 27’ for a 2021 Mac mini 512 w/16 e/w LG 24’ 4K monitor ($695) mac key board and mouse. So far no regrets.
I am currently in much the same position as you were. I had intended to get the same system as Mark, but was holding off actually spending money. I now plan to check out the iMac in Apple shop once it appears in U.K. stores before buying.
I wonder if a portable case for the iMac 24” is posible. Put a handle on the top and you have a portable porfolio
If the stand was replaced by a external battery - wow.
i give it 2 months after release until belkin or some other accessory maker creates just this. the computer only weighs like 10 lbs, after all.
