I mean if you want to get technical, it was originally Angeal's sword and it was forged by his father as a parting gift, but he never used it as "use brings wear, tear, and rust". He then gave it to Zack when he died, who, upon his own death (John Marston style via an absolute shitload of Shinra troops), gave it to Cloud.
