The emergency hand break was an improvement over the foot parking brake pedal and release handle under the dashboard during a break failure situation which I experienced on a couple of occasions. I've had a master cylinder failure once and a brake line blowout once and without the hydraulic brake pressure your only option is the mechanical hand emergency brake to apply the rear drums or discs. If you are on the road and lose your hydraulic brakes pull over onto the shoulder of the roadway take your foot off the gas and press in the brake handle release button and slowly/gradually raise the brake lever to avoid spinning the vehicle out and once the vehicle has stopped apply the brake pedal to shift into park (automatic transmission) or apply the clutch and shift into neutral and shut off the engine. Unfortunately they don't teach people how to stop using the hand brake anymore.
I always loved and will always love analog gauges. Like, are you gonna notice that fucking tiny light that tell you your engine is just about to overheat. No. But the gauge...
Zeronality not really. My uncle had one for a very short period of time. Yeah it had instant power but seemed to just level out after that and having really no sound at all and that took away from one of the things that really makes us love cars in the first place. Not only that but we work on our own motors because you can never trust ANYONE working on your vehicle these days. Got rid of it and bought a Hellcat lol.
Tony ManFlash - My comment wasn’t just about the lack of engine sound as I’m sure the OP’s comment wasn’t either. There is a lot about EV cockpits, Tesla in particular, that are radical compared to traditional ICE cars, such as touchscreens and graphics replacing nearly all buttons and knobs. It looks like this trend that Tesla started is the future though as automakers such as Audi have gone virtually all touchscreen. At least Audi cockpits still aren’t as weird as Tesla’s.
Few days ago I was driving in fog. First, car behind me was blinding me with bright headlights. He overtook me on downhill and stated to use brakes to control speed. It had super bright LED brake lights. When he braked, only thing I could see was aura of red.
1970: i bet there will be safer cars in the future 2018: so many electronical things in your car you have a chance of being shocked of something goes wrong.
I was lucky when i bought my car 2 years ago. It came with a full size spare tire with a mag wheel that's exactly like what's attached to the car, stock. Nowadays, you're lucky if a car comes with those skinny, donut-looking spares.
HA HA, I drive a 15 year old van! All my controls are buttons, sliders and nobs, the bonging thing is broken, and a full size spare lives UNDER the cargo, not even taking trunk space.
There was a sweet spot between the age of mechanical levers and machanical cables and the age of touch screen controls where physical electrical switches that were able to be affordably replaced were used.
I thought this was gonna be another one of those "rabble rabble new technology is bad" kind of video. Glad it wasn't. There's only one I slightly disagree with: seatbelt reminders are fine, they keep me from getting a ticket. And while I do think electronic handbrakes are gimmicks I don't dislike em for the same reason you do. It's just another piece of electronic equipment that'll break on you when you least expect it.
Shawn Couture Idk. I do know that theres no need to worry about electronic power steering. If the electric motor or comuter that controls it fails then it becomes manual steering.
I'm not sure in what kind of situation that'd be a problem. If you're parking the engine is already running so you have power, if the battery dies while parked the brake stays engaged. Only issue I see is that, if the battery dies, you can't disengage the brake unless there's a manual release somewhere (which some cars do have).
The only one I agree with you on is the E-Handbrake. I love a good old handbrake lever. I see your point with the start/stop, which in stop&go traffic can be more annoying than useful, but when sitting for 1 minute straight on a traffic light, is actually saves you fuel. Plus you can disable it anytime All of the other features are meant to make the car more useful or the owner's life a little easier.
I hate the touchscreen AC controls, especially in the XC90, if I want to put the air on full blast, I just want to be able to reach down and turn a knob, but instead, you have to use a screen that's much slower and more distracting while driving. Also, that BMW key with a screen would drive me crazy.
Thorbjørn Madsen Older cars are less reliable because their parts start wearing out much quicker than a modern car, plus I can turn my phone's screen off whenever I want, and put a blue light filter on it so It'll do less damage to my eyes at night. I do want a 08 Civic though, love those cars.
computer tutorials12 You actually can turn off the infotainment screen while the car is driving. I have been inside some cars with turned off screen while driving
Aussie Pom You must have never owned a push start car or proximity key car huh. The car manufacturers have other ways to get in the car when the key fob dies such as keys and key holes in the door. To start up your car most cars will still start up with a proximity chip inside the key fob that you have to put close to the push start and it will turn on with a dead key fob battery. Stop speaking on things you dont know.
No. Anyone who has had to replace a lost or damaged "keyless" fob and paid hundred of dollars to replace it does. BTW, we had pushbutton start cars long before keyless entry. The "button" was on the floor and engaged the starter.
A stupid tire repair kit is not going to be enough when you really need a spare tire. I've needed a spare tire a few times. I was really happy to have one. In two cases I would have lost at least a day, spending the night in my car in the wilderness, even though I was not that far from civilization, it was far enough to not have mobile coverage and no roadside assistance would get there. This might work in Western Europe, where I live, but not many places I travel to.
LCD touchscreens they a huge nuisance and blind you at night. In some cases sometimes It takes more energy to speak than to reach over and push a button.
My screen isn't touch, but I don't have that issue with mine on full brightness, and there is a button to press to make it go down in the dashboard if I find it distracting. But I can see how that can be an issue in some cars.
right? I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota quad cab. it has a manual gearbox and a V8, and the most complicated things on it are the electric windows and the aftermarket stereo... and i love that damn truck!
Got a 1965 Ford Mustang myself. Daily drivable, V8 engine, automatic transmission, hand crank windows, simple switches, buttons, knobs and levers. Only computer controls are for the GPS and aftermarket radio which is blutooth capable. The dash was too simplified for me tho, so I had extra gauges put in that includes your RPM, oil pressure and battery power.
That's not even new though, Chevy already that with the '89 4th gen Corvette when it first got the ZF 6-speed, and pretty much every manual Corvette since. Luckily it's easy to get rid of on those cars, not sure about the SS.
Start stop piss me off bcs it always turns on automaticly when you start and another problem is it takes a while til the car starts so if you are first on lights you are fucked up
Literally Stupid I'm not replying to you, just telling anyone who didn't check your name what your name is, just in case they were wondering why you would say that.
i love the repair kit. it's easier than changing tyre in the middle of hot day and if you got a lot of stuff in the trunk to be taken out first. I hv a full size spare tyre in the trunk but i also keep & prefer to use the repair kit.
After driving my 74 datsun, "modern" cars feel like driving a whiny Ipad instead of a car due to all the bongs, beeps, warnings, driver assists. Just learn how to drive, stay in your lane, adjust your speed when the person in front of you slows down/speeds up and parallel park your own car. Also, they seriously don't even offer spare tires anymore? Good lord. I've never been happier that my truck is at least a few decades old :D
Lynn Mckenney same here! I have a 1969 land rover diesel. Two spare tires. One on the hood and one on the rear door. A basic tool kit will dismantle the whole car and the old and slow tractor engine will run for ever and ever. The only beep you will hear is the one in your ears after driving faster than 55 miles per hour for extended periodes of time.
The auto brake and lane departure seems unnecessary. Are we all such terrible drivers that we can't use our brakes or keep our car in a lane that's twice as wide as the car. The commercials are ridiculous too. I saw one where a car had to automatically brake because a garbage truck stopped in front of them to avoid hitting another car. They would have rearended the garbage truck without auto braking. If you can't stop your car faster than a garbage truck, you need to have your license revoked.
Definitely the touchscreen. How can it be illegal to text on your phone, but not use one of those things? The whole point of them is you have to look at them to use them, so you're not looking at the road. The other is the way manufacturers are making it harder to fix even the simplest thing. On my car, the headlight bulb goes, I take the back off the headlight and replace the bulb. On some modern cars to do the same job you have to remove the front wheel, the the wheel arch lining, while on others you need to remove the entire bumper!
Ha pros of having a classic car. I have no voice control, bonging, gesture controls, complicated keys because I got a 1975 Ford Escort xl 1300 (it has an rs2000 mk2 engine in it 👌)
Tire repair kit cans do fix your tires, but only for a short amount of time. After that short time, the tire will break and be worse than the previous damage to it. The liquid could crumble up the tire, or even make it fall off!
Downsizing. Seriously, there must be better ways of saving petrol - which will not end up with a Ford F-150 Truck being powered by a quad-turbocharged 3-cylinder EcoBoost.
Maybe you just suck at using it or have an auto, so you can't control it? Never had problems with it and I don't get wht people dislike so much about it.
Tim Frolov I'm guessing u don't know much about ur engine u may not notice it but it causes excessive wear in components and can cause more severe problems depending on the type of engine u have
@@euanmcg1748 I don't care about the engine, 4-5 years and that car is sold. I have never had a problem with start stop once i figured out how to trigger it.
My dad’s lane departure is super annoying. It does not automatically put you back in the lane, but it constantly is beeping at you when you go out the lane. Luckily it does have a setting to turn the feature of ;)
What annoys me very much is that on modern cars with spare tires, the tire is very slim and can't go faster than 50 mph. It was good when the spare was the same as the actual tire. Now, the spare is just garbage.
Ivan Wong Well, I don't know about where you live, but here, if you are at 50 mph on a road even the trucks are faster than you. It's not even safe. I get that the spare tire is only supposed to take you to the nearest tire shop, but couldn't it be a normal tire at least?
I once had to use one of those space savers on my Volvo V70 T5 was fun as all hell just flooring it endless wheelspinning since it was on a powered wheel :D
I disagree with a lot of your list :D - Warning sounds - when you drive a highway, you don't look that often to the dashboard. So I rather hear a sound than driving too many miles before realizing something is wrong with my engine because I haven't checkt my Dashboard every 30 seconds. - Voice control - awesome feature in theory. Only problem is, it doesn't work that well "yet". - keyless entry - never had any problems with it. Also most cars offer an "analogue" second key. - Lane depature - depends on the situation. But in general I think it's a useful feature > which can be disabled if you don't want it - Tyre Repair Kit - as you were saying: Most people call assistance anyways. So why bother to carry the extra weight of a spare tyre all the time?
I disagree on the tire repair kit, I live in a country where road assistance is expensive or nonexistent, changing a tire is easy, fast and free. I have been in the need to change a tire many times and I wouldn't buy a car without one.
Just wearing the seatbelt and the bong sounds will stop. That's the very purpose of them. You would not give a fuck if there was just a light near the speedometer. The sounds ensures that the owner will wear the seatbelt after being irritated by the sound. Manufacturers have to irritate their customers to keep them safe and wear their own seatbelt for their own safety.
more i sees these lists more I realize my car is the end of an era. everything is button controlled, the sounds only sound off for important things (seatbelt, leaving keys in the ignition, or forgetting to turn your headlights off). it's got a standard handbrake, the fob is a small, comfortable size, you only get basic cruise control, and best of all, a full size spare tire.
Til the roof leaks and a well at the side of the boot fills with water shorting an expensive electronic box that controls the alarm, and your car starts shrieking at you as you drive along.
The bonging sounds when you open your door with the engine off is to remind you your keys are still in the ignition. The boning sound when you put your key in the ignition with all the lights lit up is a test of the bulbs and the sounds too make sure it all work properly.
I don't know which one I hate the most between Start-Stop, touch screen buttons or engine downsizing. Start-stop and engine downsizing mostly means the engine will be less reliable and touch-screen buttons call for an accident. Just give me proper steering wheel controls and leave the buttons on the dashboard. I'd rather have a remote controller than touch screen buttons. A good thing is that you can disable start-stop and annoying beeps.
If by engine downsizing you mean like the 2+4 mercury outboard style of cylinder deactivation, I'll agree, works great on a boat, but from what I hear, the extra strain on a car that's trying to take off with half of the power means you end up burning more gas, unless you spend a good amount of time cruising or idling.
I reply to EVERYONE in the first 12 hours! ( Except Trolls :D )

It's just going to malfunction in a few years and a lot of people will start dying.
I need a diagnostic tool to reset the 'hand brake' when my Passat's rear brakes need to be replaced.
I cannot stand digital gauges!
Yes a small screen is fine, but when you replace all the analog gauges with a digital screen? NO!

Never setting foot on another alien ship again.
You better get used to it because, unfortunately, it's the future of automotive cockpit design.
@@saxopio6280 not really, they can just added an "Engine sound" for the car to make it feel like a regular car. The BMW i8 has this feature

I hate LED headlights, when driving at night you just have your eyes erased by them by oncoming or even in the rear view!! Highly dangerous I think.
Haha they are great if you're in the car with them lol. But I agree it's like when you look at your phone on full brightness after sleeping 😄
Planetgrox oh man I totally agree.
Few days ago I was driving in fog. First, car behind me was blinding me with bright headlights. He overtook me on downhill and stated to use brakes to control speed. It had super bright LED brake lights. When he braked, only thing I could see was aura of red.
Viral Vehicles see that's why I usually keep the brightness to a minimum lol

I agree... PEOPLE NEED SPARE TIRES!!!🏎🏍
I was lucky when i bought my car 2 years ago. It came with a full size spare tire with a mag wheel that's exactly like what's attached to the car, stock. Nowadays, you're lucky if a car comes with those skinny, donut-looking spares.
Miss the days where cars from factory came with steelies with exact size as what installed on cars
Good thing the Mitsubishi pajero still has it
Had to laugh when I saw the ad for new Corolla brags it has a volume knob! Simple is better.More gadgets means more stuff to break.
When I turn 16 I am going to drive my dads 2004 BMW Z4
I thought this was gonna be another one of those "rabble rabble new technology is bad" kind of video. Glad it wasn't.
There's only one I slightly disagree with: seatbelt reminders are fine, they keep me from getting a ticket.
And while I do think electronic handbrakes are gimmicks I don't dislike em for the same reason you do. It's just another piece of electronic equipment that'll break on you when you least expect it.
Haha yeah true!
I would get very annoyed at a car that auto steers and brakes. It feels to much like your mom watching over your shoulder.
Plus you can disable it anytime
All of the other features are meant to make the car more useful or the owner's life a little easier.
I hate the touchscreen AC controls, especially in the XC90, if I want to put the air on full blast, I just want to be able to reach down and turn a knob, but instead, you have to use a screen that's much slower and more distracting while driving.
Also, that BMW key with a screen would drive me crazy.
computer tutorials12 Your phone is a touchscreen to. If you hate modern cars, then buy an older car or quit complaining.
Its much easier. I wouldn't want a constant screen turned on, especially at night!

Am I the only one who prefers keys over a push-button start car?? lol
Nick Dragneel Not at all. I just love the feeling of turning that key in my car.
Stop speaking on things you dont know.
skystarsystem you're not alone man

In some cases sometimes It takes more energy to speak than to reach over and push a button.
cdude100 try using the dimmer.
Hitting them with a hammer dims them .
My screen isn't touch, but I don't have that issue with mine on full brightness, and there is a button to press to make it go down in the dashboard if I find it distracting. But I can see how that can be an issue in some cars.

Haha simple is sometimes better :D
I like my car has an alarm I left the lights on. It really happens to me a lot.
Cars started just turning the lights off by themselves after a few minutes in about 2000.....

In the U.S., nobody uses handbrakes anyway. Almost all cars are automatics, no need to use a handbrake unless parking on a steep hill.
I agree to all of the annoyance. That's the reason why I still drive my car from the 90s...
Kenneth Ng everyone must envy your car
Not really.. Haha..
Kenneth Ng still running in the 90's now eh?
Definitely the touchscreen. How can it be illegal to text on your phone, but not use one of those things? The whole point of them is you have to look at them to use them, so you're not looking at the road.
The other is the way manufacturers are making it harder to fix even the simplest thing. On my car, the headlight bulb goes, I take the back off the headlight and replace the bulb. On some modern cars to do the same job you have to remove the front wheel, the the wheel arch lining, while on others you need to remove the entire bumper!

What annoys me very much is that on modern cars with spare tires, the tire is very slim and can't go faster than 50 mph. It was good when the spare was the same as the actual tire. Now, the spare is just garbage.
idailneto because no one expect you to track day with a spare tyte
Ivan Wong Well, I don't know about where you live, but here, if you are at 50 mph on a road even the trucks are faster than you. It's not even safe. I get that the spare tire is only supposed to take you to the nearest tire shop, but couldn't it be a normal tire at least?

Next list: best car keys design
Good idea!
You know what I really hate about cars, the fact that when you put the car in cruise control it will drive you off a cliff
I disagree with a lot of your list :D
- Warning sounds - when you drive a highway, you don't look that often to the dashboard.
But in general I think it's a useful feature > which can be disabled if you don't want it
- Tyre Repair Kit - as you were saying: Most people call assistance anyways. So why bother to carry the extra weight of a spare tyre all the time?
Completely agree
I disagree on the tire repair kit, I live in a country where road assistance is expensive or nonexistent, changing a tire is easy, fast and free. I have been in the need to change a tire many times and I wouldn't buy a car without one.
Wait newer cars are really getting rid of the spare? That seems dumb
my 2016 vw has a spare, but getting rid of it completely isn't the best idea
My BMW X3 doesn’t have a spare. Instead, it rolls on run flat tires. Which are much more expensive to buy than regular ones!
Varimbas not really, they're just making it an option rather than making it standard. Some even give you the option of a full-size wheel for a spare
I like the start stop.

The bonging sounds when you open your door with the engine off is to remind you your keys are still in the ignition. The boning sound when you put your key in the ignition with all the lights lit up is a test of the bulbs and the sounds too make sure it all work properly.
Ooh what about traction control that you can't turn off
Spencer Grilli It’s a “safety feature” though lmfao
Human Being no it's a "I'm a little birch that doesn't know how to drive" feature all it does is hurt performance by limiting power
You can turn it off, it can just be harder in some cars then others.
A good thing is that you can disable start-stop and annoying beeps.
yeah but you have to disable the stupid start-stop everytime you start the engine in many cars
unless you mean doing more then pressing the off button xD
marc blub i'm not talking about pressing the Off button. I mean disabling it from the ECU
In the 90s you been driving the car. Today car drives you.
Mind warehouse is that you?
