The saddest thing about the electroninc parking brake is that, most people I know (people that don't care about their cars at all) prefer it because it's "convenience" of not forgetting to put it, as their car automatically applies the electronic parking brake when the car is set to Park, and that lead me to think that, if you forget to put your handbrake every time you park, probably you shouldn't be driving at all, but that just means that it's going to stay
If that day comes where there isn't a functional emergency parking brake anymore, I'll prepare 2 big stones. One for braking, one for the back of the wheel, then get that stone from the brake foot and put it on other side at the back of the wheel.

The reason why most companies use Electronic Hand-Brakes is because they break earlier than normal ones, which then sends most people into the dealership to buy another car.
I really will miss the turning of a key, hearing all the electronics booting up before the engine comes to life in style, also the satisfying sound the hand brake makes when you pull it after parking, really made the experience of the car better. Thankfully here in Asia manual is still the preferred one, both because manual cars are cheaper than automatic ones of the same model and there is a widely believed myth that manual cars are more fuel efficient.

Thanks for the video. My newest vehicle is a 2013 work van and a 2011 car. I recently saw a video where a Ford truck manually shifts itself into park if the drivers door opens while in drive and I was astounded to see the shifter moving on its own. This led me to look up new features in cars that I had no idea about. I recently bought a 2021 Chevy work truck and its still got all of the old fashioned manual EBrake lever, keys to turn the ignition over, and a regular gesrshifter in the column. The most advanced thing on it is a backup camera which I'm fine with. An electronic ebrake and a few others mentioned here are not things I'd be looking for.
Let's all thank the "picky" Auto journalist for calling those shift levers ancient, and even implied those who prefer them to be the cowboy rhetoric or keyboard warriors. Never understood why journalist praised the new fold away lever in the F-150 but putting it back on the column is just devastating.
Honestly I hate the way auto journalists (both on and off RUclips) have a way of being condescending towards anyone with an opinion that goes against the current market trend. They love to hate on people who are critical of what manufacturers are pushing onto their customers, and in many cases the manufacturers are digging their own holes in the process and then 10 years later the same auto journalists will look back and talk smack about the same things they were praising a decade ago. I will do my best to not let you guys down in the future of car designing.

One thing I definitely miss about driving old cars is just how light and cozy it is. I get inside a commuter hatchback with window handcranks and A, B, and C pillars so thin they might as well have made it out of glass instead of the body panel material, and driving feels so much easier. I get in my dad's SUV and all the electronics in the car being hidden by body panels mean I physically cannot see the back of the car without the rear camera; I mean, the blind spots could hide an entire car. I wish manufacturers would cut it out with the unnecessary electronics like the vast infotainment system, the sound systems, the insulation for sound and engine rumble, and digital clusters in cars that don't even really need it.
I use to be a Valet Driver up until early this year, I just find it so funny that a lot of these features that annoy you are also the same features that makes Valets across the world groan when they get these in a car.

Speaking of touring cars, if you insist on replacing the shift knob with a little dial, at least put it on the steering wheel like a race car. And I know they can't because airbags, but the steering wheel still had a million buttons anyway. Put it on the column below the airbag. That column is the only empty part of the steering wheel left.
It’s funny, the car guys in my family love muscle cars. For example, one of my uncles dream car is a mustang boss 429, another uncle is a mustang fastback, then mine which I will probably never get would be a Shelby cobra 427. I could get a replica though.

I don't mind start-stop, it just annoys me that most vehicles that have it (except hybrids) automatically restart when you put the trans in park or open the door.
One thing I would like is _manual_ cylinder deactivation. Like let me switch it on and off on the fly. Let me even choose how many cylinders! That could be kinda fun. (I'd rather let the ECU decide _which_ particular cylinders to shut down, for firing order/ balance reasons; this is not worth destroying my engine)
0:18 and planes dont even beep on startup. The beeps are mostly for urgent emergencies and other fewer urgent things are called out like "Terrain" or "pull up"
That's a different thing than what he's talking about, you're thinking of ECU-controlled idle valves, he's talking about a low rev limiter when in neutral or clutch in.

@@hubertkam7647 True - I had to deal with that on my daily driver VW Beetle. Carb was such a pain in the ass, especially the auto choke that had a habit of getting stuck (and is the component needed for fast idle in warm up, the issue you're thinking of). Eventually got so fed up with it I converted the car to EFI, with an idle valve. Getting that idle valve tuned right wasn't all that straightforward either, but once I got it set right it's doing pretty good. We complain about these silly things they do in cars these days, but modern tech really is nice. I often get the sense many car enthusiasts regard the late 90s to early 2000s as the best era for this balance, cars of that vintage had the useful tech but hadn't started implementing all the silly gadgets, and were still feasible to work on. Felt like the end of the driver-focused and reasonably simple cars. I say this without bias, as my car is from the '70s.

@@hubertkam7647 Yeah, I have the same thoughts, and did the same thing - I was about to suggest such before I saw you said you did it. Converted my classic Beetle to EFI, was a great upgrade. Took a lot to get it working, all the glitches sorted out, and tuned optimally, but now it's far better in terms of performance and reliability than a carb could dream of. Also put a turbo on it, which the EFI made far easier - made no changes to anything between the throttle body (did change the throttle body) and exhaust collector aside from those done with a laptop. Manifolds, intake, fuel system, ignition, didn't have to touch any of it. Runs great, I daily it like that, only reliability shortcoming is exhaust gaskets blowing out, and it gets better MPG.
One of the nice things about still using a 2003 car: Real engine, real noise Basically no alerts besides "there's something important" (check engine, low fuel, headlights, etc) Gear shifter The only difference is my car uses the foot pedal Ebrake, but at least it isn't electric. But, looking at new cars, my biggest points of contention are the gear dial, the excessive bleeps, and the replacement of physical buttons for infotainment screens. Because i love having to use all the new safety features due to having to look away from the road for 15 minutes trying to make sure I'm pressing the right menu buttons on flat glass instead of using dedicated physical features. I haven't even dealt with those features yet and i already know I'll hate it.

My mother's car has a voice indicator that tells you whenever you go above the speed limit. Most annoying shit I've ever seen, no I don't need to be reminded every time I go 3 mph over shut the fuck up. This kinda shit that supposedly should help make people drive safer, actually just makes me grow even more impatient and angry while driving. If cars actually beeped for something useful that'd be nice.

I 100% agree with your handbrake and shift lever points. My dashboard doesn’t even say whether the electronic brake is engaged or not until I try to move with it engaged. Also, while I may only have an automatic civic, I still enjoy having a shift lever, especially going from D to S. Levers are good civilization. On your point about artificial car noises, I personally think E-cars should have them. I can’t count the amount of times I don’t notice one until it passes by a few inches next to me on the road or when I’m walking in a parking lot. I need them aural queues.

Its interesting to think that way back then, an automatic was very high tech and manuals will become a thing of the past. Fast forward to now, automatics have taken over the automotive market.
old automatics are like Schrodinger's Transmission. They're simultaneously better and worse than new transmissions. Sure, they don't have computer controlled this and that and are far less efficient due to being either a 2 speed or a 3 speed (you might get a 4 by the mid to late 70s or in a VERY high end late 60s car), but they're extremely reliable and as long as you can keep fluid in them, they just work. I don't think I've ever heard of a Powerglide or similar 2 speed from any manufacturer just randomly failing CVT style without being seriously abused first.
One thing I can't live without it was optional manual transmission. 90% automatic transmission in Malaysia and 10% of it was manual transmission car's. Plus a radio and infotainment system.

I would love it if companies limited the rev limiter only when the car is cold, but then remove it once it gets up to temp so that idiots cant smack their engine away from a cold start
My last rental was a 2019(?) Corolla which had automatic e-brake initiation. Any time the shifter was slipped in Park the car would do the slight roll but stop short. One look at the dash showed the electronic one was engaged. There's one way to wear it out faster, eh?

2:20, i recently passed my driving test and i had to learn to drive in a focus ST line (1.5L) that had one of these and boy do they suck, whats worse is the controls, because you gotta push it DOWN to put it on and pull it UP to take it off which really throws you off when you're a car enthusiast and mechanic and all you've ever known is the controls the other way around on a normal handbrake, it also has the start up menu stuff and it loves to tell you when the handbrake is ON and OFF which covers the speedometer so you have to press OK on the steering wheel twice every time it you use it
there is just something that ill never understand about manual E-Brakes or the engine cranking when you turn a key or changing into gear with a shift knob thats so unbelievably satisfying

My Volvo C70 doesn't make any dumb start sounds and doesn't have any of this stuff in it. I also got a handbrake. I guess I got really lucky for my sports car pick, even luckier for a first car at that.
My first car had an electric brake. The car that i drove to get my licence had an electric brake. One time someone asked me to move my aunts old car becauze it was in the way. I got in there and for 10 minutes i tried to get the handbrake to move i pushed and pulled in every direction with all my force i had no idea how that thing worked. I failed and had to ask someone for help. Seeing an actual handbrake on a car where i live is VERY rare. Quite sad
I actually don't mind the start button because I have 12 keys on my keyring and those would just jingle around scratching up my dash. I do admit that there is something satisfying about a turnkey though. As for the fake exhaust sound, I don't mind it aslong as it's the noise from the actual engine. I like engine noise but I also like being able to have a conversation without screaming over the windnoise at highway speeds.
This is more because of my job, but I hate not being able to move when I open the door. Especially on most German cars, I have then put it back into drive while the door is still open and then disengage the electronic e-brake. Even then some I have to go really slow

Then your just using a note to turn an engine that uses no fuel. The point of an engine is to use physics to make a self sustaining system so as long as you have fuel your engine will continue to run, your battery be charged, you power steering and brakes, your camshaft to push your valves to let more fuel into the block to combust and the cycle just continues. So if you take out the fuel all you have is a motor turning the shell of an engine which is heavier and takes more power than just putting it to the wheels. I get what your saying but unless you completely redesign what a motor truely is and how it generates power(which I don’t even think is possible). Your just making it less powerful, heavier, and less efficient. But I do want a manual for an electric car and I think their are ways to get around that.
@@un_legendary2848 I’ve got an idea for that. If you have a variable speed differential for every wheel you can set a pre determined ratio to simulate a gear change. You are changing the ratio of the vehicles drivetrain but your not actually changing gears. So in a way it’s like a manual cvt transmission where you can determine when to shift to that pre determined ratio. It’s not exactly the same thing but it will feel more like a manual and provide different ratios of gears for you to use. And this way theoretically you can have as many gears as you want as long as you can stick the shift knob in your center console. I’d just go with l like an 8 speed. 7 for performance and 1 for highway conditions. Once you get past 7 for performance the amount of time it takes to shift vs actual gains in acceleration become negligible.

It’s really relaxing like once a month but the rest of the time I’m like fuck no I don’t want my car shifting for me. In other words I’ll daily my manual in rush hour traffic or on the interstate going 100. Because manual is so much better being in control.
Electronic e-brake is honestly one of the worst things to come on modern cars. Like, it's not cheaper to maintain or produce than a cable e-brake.

The saddest thing about the electroninc parking brake is that, most people I know (people that don't care about their cars at all) prefer it because it's "convenience" of not forgetting to put it, as their car automatically applies the electronic parking brake when the car is set to Park, and that lead me to think that, if you forget to put your handbrake every time you park, probably you shouldn't be driving at all, but that just means that it's going to stay

The reason why most companies use Electronic Hand-Brakes is because they break earlier than normal ones, which then sends most people into the dealership to buy another car.
I really will miss the turning of a key, hearing all the electronics booting up before the engine comes to life in style, also the satisfying sound the hand brake makes when you pull it after parking, really made the experience of the car better.

Thanks for the video. My newest vehicle is a 2013 work van and a 2011 car. I recently saw a video where a Ford truck manually shifts itself into park if the drivers door opens while in drive and I was astounded to see the shifter moving on its own. This led me to look up new features in cars that I had no idea about.
I recently bought a 2021 Chevy work truck and its still got all of the old fashioned manual EBrake lever, keys to turn the ignition over, and a regular gesrshifter in the column. The most advanced thing on it is a backup camera which I'm fine with.
An electronic ebrake and a few others mentioned here are not things I'd be looking for.
Let's all thank the "picky" Auto journalist for calling those shift levers ancient, and even implied those who prefer them to be the cowboy rhetoric or keyboard warriors. Never understood why journalist praised the new fold away lever in the F-150 but putting it back on the column is just devastating.

Honestly I hate the way auto journalists (both on and off RUclips) have a way of being condescending towards anyone with an opinion that goes against the current market trend. One thing I definitely miss about driving old cars is just how light and cozy it is. I get inside a commuter hatchback with window handcranks and A, B, and C pillars so thin they might as well have made it out of glass instead of the body panel material, and driving feels so much easier.
I get in my dad's SUV and all the electronics in the car being hidden by body panels mean I physically cannot see the back of the car without the rear camera; I mean, the blind spots could hide an entire car. I wish manufacturers would cut it out with the unnecessary electronics like the vast infotainment system, the sound systems, the insulation for sound and engine rumble, and digital clusters in cars that don't even really need it.

@@hubertkam7647 True - I had to deal with that on my daily driver VW Beetle. Carb was such a pain in the ass, especially the auto choke that had a habit of getting stuck (and is the component needed for fast idle in warm up, the issue you're thinking of). Eventually got so fed up with it I converted the car to EFI, with an idle valve. Getting that idle valve tuned right wasn't all that straightforward either, but once I got it set right it's doing pretty good.
We complain about these silly things they do in cars these days, but modern tech really is nice. I often get the sense many car enthusiasts regard the late 90s to early 2000s as the best era for this balance, cars of that vintage had the useful tech but hadn't started implementing all the silly gadgets, and were still feasible to work on. Felt like the end of the driver-focused and reasonably simple cars. I say this without bias, as my car is from the '70s.

@@hubertkam7647 Yeah, I have the same thoughts, and did the same thing - I was about to suggest such before I saw you said you did it. Converted my classic Beetle to EFI, was a great upgrade. Took a lot to get it working, all the glitches sorted out, and tuned optimally, but now it's far better in terms of performance and reliability than a carb could dream of. Also put a turbo on it, which the EFI made far easier - made no changes to anything between the throttle body (did change the throttle body) and exhaust collector aside from those done with a laptop. Manifolds, intake, fuel system, ignition, didn't have to touch any of it. Runs great, I daily it like that, only reliability shortcoming is exhaust gaskets blowing out, and it gets better MPG.

Basically no alerts besides "there's something important" (check engine, low fuel, headlights, etc)

The only difference is my car uses the foot pedal Ebrake, but at least it isn't electric.
But, looking at new cars, my biggest points of contention are the gear dial, the excessive bleeps, and the replacement of physical buttons for infotainment screens. Because i love having to use all the new safety features due to having to look away from the road for 15 minutes trying to make sure I'm pressing the right menu buttons on flat glass instead of using dedicated physical features.
I haven't even dealt with those features yet and i already know I'll hate it.

My mother's car has a voice indicator that tells you whenever you go above the speed limit. Most annoying shit I've ever seen, no I don't need to be reminded every time I go 3 mph over shut the fuck up. If cars actually beeped for something useful that'd be nice.

Also, while I may only have an automatic civic, I still enjoy having a shift lever, especially going from D to S. Levers are good civilization.
On your point about artificial car noises, I personally think E-cars should have them. I can’t count the amount of times I don’t notice one until it passes by a few inches next to me on the road or when I’m walking in a parking lot. I need them aural queues.
hey bladed i'm from the the UK. Here cars have rev limiters due to Emissions tests and literally every sports car even a hypercar is limited under 3 to 4k rpms
if your not too hard on the throttle a car with at least about 200HP shouldn't be above about 3-4k RPM anyways let alone some 400+HP sports car.
Pretty sure the emissions are way higher under load, in the full rev range of the engine, but that's allowed. Just not while parked? Ridiculous.

Its interesting to think that way back then, an automatic was very high tech and manuals will become a thing of the past. Fast forward to now, automatics have taken over the automotive market.
old automatics are like Schrodinger's Transmission. They're simultaneously better and worse than new transmissions.
Sure, they don't have computer controlled this and that and are far less efficient due to being either a 2 speed or a 3 speed (you might get a 4 by the mid to late 70s or in a VERY high end late 60s car), but they're extremely reliable and as long as you can keep fluid in them, they just work. I don't think I've ever heard of a Powerglide or similar 2 speed from any manufacturer just randomly failing CVT style without being seriously abused first.

To be fair, manual is cool, but if you want to use it as a daily drive, it's a totally nightmare. So imo, I will use automatic for daily drive while manual for fun
Modern cars being packed with all those features are the reason I'm keeping my good old 1998 BMW 528i. I mean, it doesnt even make that annoying noice if I drive without seatbelt on, has a manual handbrake and if I wanted to, I could rev in idle as much as I want until that natural aspirated inline-6 blows up😅

My last rental was a 2019(?) Corolla which had automatic e-brake initiation. Any time the shifter was slipped in Park the car would do the slight roll but stop short. One look at the dash showed the electronic one was engaged. There's one way to wear it out faster, eh?

That's terrible. I remember as a valet being infinitely frustrated when parking a Prius. The e-brake was stupid finicky.

2:20, i recently passed my driving test and i had to learn to drive in a focus ST line (1.5L) that had one of these and boy do they suck, whats worse is the controls, because you gotta push it DOWN to put it on and pull it UP to take it off which really throws you off when you're a car enthusiast and mechanic and all you've ever known is the controls the other way around on a normal handbrake, it also has the start up menu stuff and it loves to tell you when the handbrake is ON and OFF which covers the speedometer so you have to press OK on the steering wheel twice every time it you use it

I 100% agree with ya on the dial-a-shifter bullshit. I find even more discouraging to see so few cars nowdays offered with a proper clutch and H-pattern shifter. They say that paddle shifters are better in ultra-high performance cars, but to me, they do nothing to stir my soul.

My Volvo C70 doesn't make any dumb start sounds and doesn't have any of this stuff in it. I also got a handbrake. I guess I got really lucky for my sports car pick, even luckier for a first car at that.
My first car had an electric brake. The car that i drove to get my licence had an electric brake. One time someone asked me to move my aunts old car becauze it was in the way. I got in there and for 10 minutes i tried to get the handbrake to move i pushed and pulled in every direction with all my force i had no idea how that thing worked. I failed and had to ask someone for help. Seeing an actual handbrake on a car where i live is VERY rare. Quite sad

I actually don't mind the start button because I have 12 keys on my keyring and those would just jingle around scratching up my dash. I do admit that there is something satisfying about a turnkey though.
As for the fake exhaust sound, I don't mind it aslong as it's the noise from the actual engine. I like engine noise but I also like being able to have a conversation without screaming over the windnoise at highway speeds.

This is more because of my job, but I hate not being able to move when I open the door. Especially on most German cars, I have then put it back into drive while the door is still open and then disengage the electronic e-brake. Even then some I have to go really slow

You answered your own complaint about the e-brake. It's more expensive to fix and the parts are expensive too. That means more money for the dealer repair shop.

Then your just using a note to turn an engine that uses no fuel. The point of an engine is to use physics to make a self sustaining system so as long as you have fuel your engine will continue to run, your battery be charged, you power steering and brakes, your camshaft to push your valves to let more fuel into the block to combust and the cycle just continues. So if you take out the fuel all you have is a motor turning the shell of an engine which is heavier and takes more power than just putting it to the wheels. I get what your saying but unless you completely redesign what a motor truely is and how it generates power(which I don’t even think is possible). Your just making it less powerful, heavier, and less efficient. But I do want a manual for an electric car and I think their are ways to get around that.

@@un_legendary2848 I’ve got an idea for that. If you have a variable speed differential for every wheel you can set a pre determined ratio to simulate a gear change. You are changing the ratio of the vehicles drivetrain but your not actually changing gears. So in a way it’s like a manual cvt transmission where you can determine when to shift to that pre determined ratio. It’s not exactly the same thing but it will feel more like a manual and provide different ratios of gears for you to use. And this way theoretically you can have as many gears as you want as long as you can stick the shift knob in your center console. I’d just go with l like an 8 speed. 7 for performance and 1 for highway conditions. Once you get past 7 for performance the amount of time it takes to shift vs actual gains in acceleration become negligible.

@@un_legendary2848 me to man. I can get past their being no engine in a car, but like you I need a manual for it to work out. I hate driving automatic. It’s a love hate thing. It’s really relaxing like once a month but the rest of the time I’m like fuck no I don’t want my car shifting for me. In other words I’ll daily my manual in rush hour traffic or on the interstate going 100. Because manual is so much better being in control.
