- UAE introduced changes regarding to its ''6 months rule'' pertaining to resident permit holders. There are lots of misconceptions regarding this change in the UAE residency, and today we are clearing up the confusion.
If you are a Dubai resident, who is traveling for part of the year you will find this information useful.
How did UAE residence permits work before? The main rule was that you can not be outside of the country for more than 6 months at the time. This would result in immediate cancelation of your resident visa. You had to visit the country at least once every 6 months (180 days).
Recently these rules have changed.
Do you need to spend 6 months in UAE (Dubai) in order to keep your residency permit? Absolutely not! Quite the opposite! Now it is easier for you to keep your residency if you were out of the country for more than 6 months.
If you are abroad for more than 6 months, they will not automatically cancel your visa. You will be able to re apply for an entry permit.
You will need to supply the reason why you were absent for this long, and you will need to pay some fines.
This being said you will not be able to extend this absence permanently.

I have heard the one can get an official statement of tax residency with only 3 months per year in the UAE. Down from the original 6 months in past. True?
A lot of people seem to struggle with "come back within 6 months to keep it"
Thanks for clarification, Michael
Very helpful thank you man

Is it true, with the investor visa you can come back every 12 months?
Calculation of 6months and 180 is very different. Someone who wants to visit just to maintain visa status and want to visit at the at the end of the time period, how do you calculate? For eg. if I left on Feb 1, 2024 from UAE, 6months end on 31st july. However, 180 days end on 29th of July. I tried speaking to immigration officer regarding this, but they were just pretending that my question was silly. It might seem silly, but I just want to make the most of my time outside uae. Any clarity on this?

So now you apply after the 180 days have already passed and you're still out... seems risky. If they reject your application then what happens?
More likely that you’ll end up paying some fines, but that’s about it
