It’s common in nyc that a driver turning into a crosswalk with pedestrians does not respect the pedestrian and the 11 feet of distance. People drive like pedestrians do not exist and is a matter of time things like this happen again.

Even if what you say happened the legal burden in on the driver who is supposed to check for clearance when making a left turn. Years ago I used to go work in California. A man there told me when they were kids they would put a foot in the crosswalk. Once the foot is in there the vehicles are not allowed in the intersection with pedestrians. Too bad NYC does not have that law.
Why the hell are two toddlers crossing the road alone? If the mother was there, how did the children get hit? I feel bad for the driver, they must have been horrified, they tried to help. Most would try to get away.
You see this is how you handle a hit. You stay at the scene now, he might get jail time because one was fatal but it won’t be for a long time at all. Best case scenario he’s just going to get a slap on the wrist and have probation for a very long time or he’s going to jail for a year or two. Or a year in jail with multiple years of probation and his license taken away. Now, the guy in the video are right. Some people just don’t care to look at their surroundings but, I’m a truck driver and not only drivers don’t do that but people don’t do that while they are crossing the street. They think just because it’s okay to walk across the street that you don’t need common sense to look to see if the close is clear to walk across the street. What NYC should do is change the timing for the walkways. If there’s a turning lane going left in an intersection the sign that tells pedestrians to walk should wait to turn and have a voice that says “ please wait. “ giving the drivers that are making left a clear choice to make that turn. And it’ll only take a couple seconds or a minute. Everyone can wait that long. It’s not going to hurt anyone. This is my solution but, I already know nyc isn’t going to do nothing about it.

Even though he knows what he might face, he knows that the kids and the women are humans. Yes drivers never pay attention and speed across the street. That’s why you have to teach kids not to cross without their parents. I never dared to run across the street without holding my mother’s hand. You can’t put the kids life in the hands of random drivers. Doesn’t matter if the driver was speeding at this point anymore because the lives are already lost.

That's a wide ass street on both sides, If you hit two little kids like that it's because you weren't looking.

Everyone needs to retake the test due to the fact they don’t know the rules of the road. That’s why bad drivers run from accidents. As a NYCer and a driver Ive seen how yahll cross the street so she had 3 yound kids with her under the age of 5 pushing a stoller. I know she didnt have full grasp of them kids. And the driver was probably speeding. Sad story all around
Not sure why you're bringing race into it. The mother was crossing with them. Likely what happened was the mother wasn't actually holding the children with her hand or letting them run ahead. However in the end this is the driver's fault. 135th and Lenox is a street to be speeding on.
