I was able to find the phone number of the CEO's office (this was before all the mergers, so it was a regional bank, not national yet) and left a message with his secretary complaining asking him to call me back. He never did, but my branch of the bank called less than an hour later. They reopened the account immediately and covered all the late charges that they'd caused us.

My favorite was when a FL couple were granted a court seizure order for all of a BoA bank branch's contents. They had paid cash for their house, but their bank claimed they were delinquent on their (non-existent) mortgage and foreclosed on them. After successfully suing the bank, the bank was ordered, but refused, to pay their legal fees. They were granted a seizure order for *everything* in the branch - including the cash in the teller's drawers. (and probably anything in safety deposit boxes). They showed up with the court order, a truck, and two sheriff's deputies. The very panicked branch manager promptly coughed up the money owed.

I understand the "suspicious" check thing.
That being said, when you get confirmation, when the individual is there and able to ID, when you had no problem TAKING the money, there is absolutely no reason not to release and be done with it.
Interest should be paid on top... but what makes this even more frustrating is that all through this, the bank was able to use those funds as they saw fit (just like any other time a bank has your money), and probably incorporated it into transactions for real estate.
Giving her the money back after such a ludicrous period is not proper. Giving her *good* interest would be a start. Charging the bank for the entire time spent not having access to their easily verified funds (at even a standard living wage) would be a good idea.
But only squaring things away once it became a potential PR scandal? That should come with benefits to ask politely that there not be a followup lawsuit.

I am not saying it should be thousands, but some type of penalty. If we didn’t pay a bank for a year there definitely would be consequences. Since banks borrow money from the government (the American people) at less than 1% and they loan it out for a lot more they are actually stealing our money twice just by lending people money. The bank account is just a contract between you and the bank holding the bank "accountable" to paying you an agreed upon sum. But since the money is theirs, they won't pay interest to themselves. What? I don't know if this is how things are done in the US. No mention was made of any process failings, or how they would be repaired. Chase just paid it out because of bad press. So when this happens over and over again it won't get fixed because nothing has changed.
Terrible journalism avoids the core problem.

Chase is doing what the government does with asset forfeiture. That’s the new way to steal people’s money. Since banks are no longer regulated and barely answer to any authority, they can get away with this behavior and the government probably gets its cut of the action.
