I remember the caramel squares always had one that was chocolate square in the bag!! I always wanted it when I was a child! I like chocolate, my husband loves chocolate. I usually use the chocolate fudge or triple chocolate cake mix. I do make home made white cake every once in awhile. I made this cake to take to my mother’s church for lunch today and everyone loved it. Now my mother passed away 11 years ago and I’m not a member, but when I took her I fell in love with the people and I still go. I do have my own church but I do like going to my mom’s.church. Got this recipe from lady I worked with in early 80’s. Have made many times & never disappointed! Have never iced it because it is so rich, but yours sure looked good! Have given recipe to many people! If you find the wrapped caramels, might want to get them unwrapped before you start making the cake. That takes longer than anything, but well worth it!

Sometimes, when I use a pre made/store bought frosting; I'll whip it up with a mixer for a few minutes. It doubles in size; easier to spread and doesn't taste as sugary. Works especially well for a two layer cake.
If I had the opportunity to eat chocolate, this cake would be my choice. Unfortunately I risk the world's greatest migraine if I did so, but my friends are all chocoholics so I will be making this. Thank you Tom and Melissa.

I sent many an hour unwrapping those caramels. I also was making this in early 80's. Haven't made it in years. Seems like we didn't add the water. It made more of a brownie texture. Cut into small squares. Really rich, but I never found anyone that didn't love them. I may have to make this for the holidays. Love the channel. I enjoy it very much.🎉
I just found this yesterday. I'm not sure how I missed it. I read the name of it to my husband, and he instantly changed his requested birthday cake to this one. Lol Needles to say it is halfway through its second bake right now. YUM!!!!! I have to tell y'all that every time I watch this video, I laugh at the part when Tom is pouring the melted caramel onto the cake and doesn't clean the bowl completely!!! The first time you really had me..."Tom, are you okay? You ALWAYS clean out the containers/bowls completely, just like I do!!! No ingredients shall be left behind! I’m so happy to see you post this recipe. My cousin made this for a gathering back in the late 1980’s and I asked her for the recipe. My son is now 30 and it’s his favorite. I lost my recipe years ago and have improvised over the years but I had forgotten about splitting it into two layers. He’s going to be so happy when I make this again. Thank you so much!
You're right----that is an old recipe. I used to make it frequently, but I don't remember my recipe being exactly like that, but I do remember the caramel squares. I lost my recipe years ago, so this might be more similar than I remember! My recipe had a recipe for the icing also. Can't remember that, either, but I think it was thin. Anyway, I loved it and people frequently asked me to make it for them. My boss called it "death by chocolate"!

I’m watching your video in Texas about 5:53 PM. I must tell you that I’ve enjoyed cooking all of my life. I have become addicted to your videos. I love the fact that you always scrape all of your ingredients out of your bowl. I am not able to cook much anymore but I love your videos and your choice of dishes that you prepare. Most everything you prepare uses ingredients that you usually have in your kitchen. I’m just southern and enjoy good old fashion food and I usually refer to my kind of good food as soul food. Oh my Lord!! I think I have died and gone to heaven just reading this recipe! And the kicker was when you told us this was an old recipe and you couldn’t even count the number of times you had made it! I have NO idea why it has taken you this long to give us this recipe except you must have figured we would NEVER leave your table or house as I am sure it will take me a little while to awake from my sugar coma. I already know this German chocolate cake mix is heaven because I use it myself to make a Kalua Bundt cake during the holidays that has the top lined with pecan pieces and it is to die for too! I will not sleep till I get this made and so that means all my neighbors will get a sample because I am at my max weight from “sitting at your table” and I can’t outgrow my new wardrobe without getting more than one season out of it!! I wish I could tell you both that I will not be sitting at your table for awhile, as I really do need to take a break from coming over, but it’s too late now, I’m hooked!! I can’t stop checking my account to see what the new visit to your table might bring. And never mind you thinking you can get rid of me over the Florida migrate journey this year, because I am already saving up gas money so I can follow you this year!! This looks scrumptious! A tip for making canned frosting taste more like homemade is to stir in a teaspoon of vanilla., regardless of the flavor--it really DOES make a difference.

At the grocery store I bought a bag of Nestles Caramel Chips instead of Kraft Caramel Bits!😩🫤🙄 I still followed your directions and melted the caramel chips with 1/3 cup of Carnation milk. (I used a double boiler and said a prayer!) The melted caramel chips with the Carnation Milk worked perfectly, except I KNOW that the Kraft Caramel will be much better the next time I bake the cake. Art and I have been so anxious to taste the cake that I sliced two still-warm squares and frosted them individually with canned frosting. That cake is SO INCREDIBLY GOOD!!! Thank you for such a delicious recipe!!! 😁 Have a wonderful “What’s Left of Labor Day”!

It reminds me if a cake I have made that was a Pillsbury award winner. It was a round chocolate layer cake with caramel and nuts in between the layers and Cool Whip on top. This one looks good too!

Oh my Lord!! I think I have died and gone to heaven just reading this recipe! And the kicker was when you told us this was an old recipe and you couldn’t even count the number of times you had made it! I have NO idea why it has taken you this long to give us this recipe except you must have figured we would NEVER leave your table or house as I am sure it will take me a little while to awake from my sugar coma. I already know this German chocolate cake mix is heaven because I use it myself to make a Kalua Bundt cake during the holidays that has the top lined with pecan pieces and it is to die for too! I will not sleep till I get this made and so that means all my neighbors will get a sample because I am at my max weight from “sitting at your table” and I can’t outgrow my new wardrobe without getting more than one season out of it!! I wish I could tell you both that I will not be sitting at your table for awhile, as I really do need to take a break from coming over, but it’s too late now, I’m hooked!! I can’t stop checking my account to see what the new visit to your table might bring. And never mind you thinking you can get rid of me over the Florida migrate journey this year, because I am already saving up gas money so I can follow you this year!! (The biggest fan here in Oklahoma City!) ❤❤

This looks scrumptious! A tip for making canned frosting taste more like homemade is to stir in a teaspoon of vanilla., regardless of the flavor--it really DOES make a difference.
Kathie says…Happy Labor Day! I made this D E L I C I O U S Cake today! I even made a mistake with it and it turned out delicious! At the grocery store I bought a bag of Nestles Caramel Chips instead of Kraft Caramel Bits!😩🫤🙄 I still followed your directions and melted the caramel chips with 1/3 cup of Carnation milk. (I used a double boiler and said a prayer!) The melted caramel chips with the Carnation Milk worked perfectly, except I KNOW that the Kraft Caramel will be much better the next time I bake the cake. Art and I have been so anxious to taste the cake that I sliced two still-warm squares and frosted them individually with canned frosting. That cake is SO INCREDIBLY GOOD!!! Thank you for such a delicious recipe!!! 😁 Have a wonderful “What’s Left of Labor Day”!

It reminds me if a cake I have made that was a Pillsbury award winner. It was a round chocolate layer cake with caramel and nuts in between the layers and Cool Whip on top. This one looks good too!
