The hole in the reptile caves are for plastic loop tags with the logo, company name, barcode, and the like. Though the last two are more of happy little accidents than for true functionality. A tip for doing silicone on glass jars and the like. Get a plastic coffee cup/dixi or the like. Add some rubbing alcohol to it then squeeze a bunch of silicone into the rubbing alcohol and mix like crazy till completely till i has the consistency of thick glue. You could do a layer of silicone then add cheap sand then add a second layer and add the black sand. Just remember you will have to wait a few extra days to make sure the rubbing alcohol has totally defused out of the silicone before adding it to your tank.
Hi Mark, while I'm not sure of the answer to the hole, here's my experience. I used a Crystal Head vodka bottle (skull shaped) inside an aquarium, my intent was to part fill with substrate and then some small plants to grow inside. I had about 5 bacterial blooms and figured this may be water circulation. Drilled a hole in the back and never had another bacterial bloom. It did kind of look cool, though I knew it wasn't healthy. The cloudy water would slowly drift out the top of the bottle like a light fog and the misty water inside the skull really made it stand out.
Really cool! Very much looking forward to seeing the babies. To be fair though, us mere fish keeping mortals could only dream of starting a tank like this so fast. Most of us don't have several buckets of well-established plants (replete with all sorts of good bacteria) to start with. Also, I have found the bacteria in a bottle to be quite variable in quality and freshness. (Looking with pangs of envy at my empty 5-gallon caradina tank that just finished up with a 4-week fishless cycle.)
Hey man, I've held lots of breeding ancistrus over the years and 22 is generally ok but for breeding a bit low. I usually kept it at around 24-25 and they gave a clutch of 15 fry every 2-3 months. The trick to get them to mate is actually to simulate the rain season. I did this by doing a fairly large water change every 5-7 days when I tried to get them to spawn, having the new water being a bit (3-4 degrees C) colder than the tank and using a piece of plexiglass with holes drilled in made the "rain drops". I also lowered the lights a bit during that time to simulate cloud cover. It seems the water change only already triggered the spawning the first few times, but after reading up I added the other stuff. Not sure if its all effective but it's good fun in any case. Definitely keep oxygen levels high, as I've found that the eggs have a better chance of survival if there is more oxygen in the water. You will see the father fanning the eggs as well, and I understand that that behavior is precisely to get that oxygen rich water across the eggs. Also, higher temperatures speeds up the lifecycle of the shrimp. That means they die sooner, but they also lay eggs more often and mature quicker. If you want to run through more generations a bit quicker and cull a lot to achieve desired breeding stock results that might factor in to your standard temperature. Love your fish room and can't wait to see what results you get from that breeding tank with two of my favorite animals, the ancistrus and the blue dreams!
As far as I know, the holes on the caves are for air to exit so it doesn’t float. Also I’m totally stealing that brilliant cave hide and using zip tie suction cups so it’s easily removable. I can’t wait to get shrimp now. I used to think they were too fragile but this channel and a few others have really made it seem more manageable. Thank you!
great content again Mark well done, I keep my Bristle nose around the 22 degree mark and had no issues the guide says 23-27 degrees, colder temperatures when doing water changes enduces spawning, I have around 200 young at present and all doing great.
Fun tank Mark. Neos and bristlenose make perfect tank mates 👍 Looking forward to seeing how it progresses, would be super awesome if they spawn in the cave on side of tank.

This is a wonderful video Mark! I am anxious to see if you have any issues with a bare bottom tank and plecos. I have had terrible luck with ammonia spikes...especially when using protein rich foods. If I use a sand or gravel substrate the tank stability is very strong! Love your cave design and creativity too! Love these types of videos you do! 🤩
The entire substrate is acting as additional biological filter media, adding a massive boost in ammonia processing capability. You can get an undergravel filter to enhance the effect even more. 👍
I like that it's a bare bottom tank. With the plants it looks quite nice. I had a pair in a 10 gallon tank, and they bred very prolifically for me. I had a terra cotta pot, upside down, with a flat rock on top, and it was covered in java moss. Also had a nice piece of Mopani wood in for them as well, with java fern on it. One bristle nose was albino and the other was dark like yours. The babies were a mix. Some were albino, like mom, and some were like the black dad. I love the bristle noses. They are so cute, I think. Anyhow, I hope they do go into the cave on the side of the tank. Will be fun to be able to watch their breeding progress in there. Thanks and am looking forward to the next video.
Great video! Really interesting and unique ways of making hides that allow you to view the fry 😊 Good luck with the BNPs! They’re supposedly easy to breed with caves and big water changes. Their fry are amazing to watch grow, especially in their wiggly phase 😁 Temperature wise, they originate from Amazon rivers so 23-27 is a good general range 😊
I love watching all your projects and I love how you explain what you do and why. Thank you I have one of those caves LOL if you seal it it will get dirt built up in there.
If I had to guess, I'd say the hole in the cave is for the retail stores to hang it by on a hook or to put a product/price tag on so there's no stickers on the cave
Masking tape works well 4 holding things firmly fixed. Great stuff just love your sharing. thanx a bunch. The masking tape will hold long enough 4 the silicone to fully cure.
Hi Mark. Love your videos! I was wondering if you can tell me the names of those big beautiful snails I saw in the tank from where you cought the male ancistrus? Benno from Sweden
I assume the hole in the cave improves water circulation. With only the main entrance as an opening, it's basically impossible for any water to circulate between the inside and outside of the cave. The added hole gives water a path through the cave and back out, allowing it to circulate. Probably prevents buildup of CO2, nutrients/waste, and lack of O2.
I like the brightness of the tank so the lights in my eyes are good, as long as your plants thrive keep em. also, what kind of flake (food) are you feeding here?
This is one of the best setups ive done so far for mass breeding shrimp, i have thousands of shrimp in it all ready and the plants have went bezerk, I will try and do a video for it all soon.
Hi Mark - just a suggestion for the second cave: maybe take it out for now and add it back in once the first/main one is established and the plecos started breeding?!
I may have messed up I bought my shrimp already and my 20 gallon tank but did not really anticipate the setup of the tank . Could I use my Java moss that’s in my tank currently to help start my shrimp tank ? It’s been running for weeks so it should have good bacteria right ?
Hi Mark, after I watched this video and other setup videos I have a some question about my new shrimp tank. I am really sorry that always asking you even you're busy but I hope I can get an answer here to make my blue dream tank successfully! I will setup my blue dream shrimp tank with river sand (silica) like yours. I watched in other video that you added pinch of goldfish powder food into the new tank with seachem stability. But in this video, I noticed that you just added seachem stability but not goldfish food... Is it because you don't recommand anymore to use the goldfish powder food for cycling a new shrimp tank? And if you still recommand to use the goldfish powder food with seachem stability.... How many times do I have to add goldfish powder food in cycling tank? or just one time is enough then wait for at least a month to cycle? Thank you so much again Mark.
I didnt add anything this time because we added wood and plants. if everything is new then yes you need to add a food source for the bacteria. all you need is a pinch of flakes to get it started in an empty tank.
Hey Mark, I really fancy getting some Jade green shrimp. But I have heard they do not breed true, at all. And can be very difficult to keep alive. Have you any thoughts on these shrimp. Thanks Mark, as always love your vids. x
No neos breed true at all Jo and yes I find Green Jades harder to breed for some reason but I know people that breed them very easy so I dont know whats going on with them, sorry Iam not much help 😂
I used to keep my bristlenose tank at 24-26C, I'd also do 20-30% water changes with cold-ish water, as it's meant to help encourage breeding. It's probably a good thing you only have a couple in there, because they breed like crazy. Have you got any other forms of plecos/bristlenose?
Love your videos. I think the caves you moved the plecos with would be much better for them to breed. I raised Bristle nose plecos for a couple years. They are super easy to raise. As your tank sits right now I would guess if they breed they would breed in the coconut shell. They like small places. Hope they do good for you. I also wanted to say I really like your pitcher plants that you have there! Good luck Buddy!
Bristlenose plecos are very tolerant temperature-wise. I have them in all my tanks. Some are heated to 28 degrees and some are without heaters, which means 20-22. And I never had an issue.
They will if you dont feed them enough, just having a bristlenose in the tank means I can add 3-4 times as much food and the shrimp population starts to get bigger over time.
They will definitely eat shrimp, but as Marks Shrimp Tanks said, if you feed them enough, it's less likely. It'll still happen, but your shrimp will breed faster than they are eaten. You just want a few plants/hides for the shrimp to ensure they have somewhere to hide if the bristlenose comes out looking for food
Hi Mark, they are allowed to be kept in between 16-26°C. However when breeding it's best to keep the temperature somewhat high.... 23-26°C Goodluck breeding them!
im not sure if its just here in denmark but often people advise us to have two females per male for plecos, good luck am looking forward to seeing your adventure in to having fish and breeding them.
Not sure if you got the answer yet but the small hole is on all the exo Terra reptile hides, it's for the plastic loop that holds tag with the size and barcode ect
I believe that specific cave has a hole because the manufacturer usually zip ties the Top and bottom piece that comes with it together. Not sure why pleco caves have it
Is shrimp king active soil ok for crystal red ?? I have one pack and I used it is leaching out gold/yellow tint in water . Is this soil safe for crystal red
Hi Mark. Pretty sure that jar will crack as it's naff glass. You could have drilled another hole in the cave. Then used hole to suspend rather than silicone.
I'm pretty sure the hole in the side is from when they paint the outside of the cave while it's hanging on a wire to dry . it just hasn't been filled in an spot painted because it's probably cheaper than some other Aquarium caves
cave schuld have a hole on both sides for water circulation. egss need constant flow oxidized water . i have succesfuly breed placos in clay field drainage pipes.
I’d imagine if it was a thought out decision the hole is to allow water flow in the cave if there was no hole likely no new water would enter since you can’t compress liquid (without enough force to freeze it but that takes huge atmospheric pressures and our pumps/filters aren’t that strong lol) more supporting evidence to this theory is that if the hole is to allow air to exit when filled with water the hole would be at the highest point in the cave allowing it to actually do that task the hole could also be a completely over looked aspect on his part and may only be there for packaging purposes (like if a tag was ran through it for example)
@@MarksShrimpTanks yea figured that was probably the reason it’s common a lot of hard scape items have tags going through existing holes or they make one for a tag to go through I had to edit my comment though I misremembered what happens when you successfully compress water
@@MarksShrimpTankssuper cool to get a response from you though and in such a fast manner caught me off guard I hadn’t even finished watching the video!
Lol the hole is for the store to loop a price tag through it though it might be good to have so air dosent get trapped(source) “i work at a pet shop”/“trust me bro”
The bare bottom just doesn't look/feel natural to me... And gravel provides so much surface for beneficial bacteria.. I read an article about gravel vs bare the difference was significant in favor of even a thin layer of gravel.. I'm not saying there will be any issue for you, you're a great shrimp keeper and maintain your tank so well..! You could put some gravel in the base of the sponge filter.. The shrimp may breed better because the plecos provide a constant supply of fish poop....
If the purpose is to breed, bare bottom is usually easiest for maintenance and collecting fry. I initially started breeding fish in a planted tank and realised I had made a mistake hahaha
years back I seen a neo setup that was in Taiwan and all they had was a large square concrete ponds, no plants or anything and they were breeding thousands of neos in it with hundreds of large bristlenoses, thats where I got the idea for this tank.

It's a cool way to experiment and your time feels happy good to watch and it looks like a good idea. To fix the Equariem.
The hole in the reptile caves are for plastic loop tags with the logo, company name, barcode, and the like. A tip for doing silicone on glass jars and the like. Get a plastic coffee cup/dixi or the like. Bristlenose plecos are very tolerant temperature-wise. I have them in all my tanks. Some are heated to 28 degrees and some are without heaters, which means 20-22. And I never had an issue.
thank you for that information Rikard. 👍
And yes I would add that plant.
I have a cherry shrimp tank, will the Bristlenose Pleco dwindle my shrimp population? And will they eat planaria?
They will if you dont feed them enough, just having a bristlenose in the tank means I can add 3-4 times as much food and the shrimp population starts to get bigger over time.
@@MarksShrimpTanks awesome theory Mark, thanks for the reply
They will definitely eat shrimp, but as Marks Shrimp Tanks said, if you feed them enough, it's less likely. It'll still happen, but your shrimp will breed faster than they are eaten. You just want a few plants/hides for the shrimp to ensure they have somewhere to hide if the bristlenose comes out looking for food
Hi Mark, they are allowed to be kept in between 16-26°C. However when breeding it's best to keep the temperature somewhat high.... 23-26°C
Goodluck breeding them!
Thank you Michel, I think for the winter at least I will need to add a heater, thanks for the advice.
im not sure if its just here in denmark but often people advise us to have two females per male for plecos, good luck am looking forward to seeing your adventure in to having fish and breeding them.
That little hole from what I believe is basically just for the price tag at the shops
Thank you
Not sure if you got the answer yet but the small hole is on all the exo Terra reptile hides, it's for the plastic loop that holds tag with the size and barcode ect
Yes I did and thank you. 👍
I believe that specific cave has a hole because the manufacturer usually zip ties the Top and bottom piece that comes with it together. Not sure why pleco caves have it
this was a reptile cave I bought it like this.
@@MarksShrimpTanks weird. When I bought my reptile cave it had a top and bottom piece. Mine could be a different brand though.
@@MarksShrimpTanks could be for the retail tag then
I think thats what it was meant to be anyways
Youre located in Norway?
Is shrimp king active soil ok for crystal red ?? I have one pack and I used it is leaching out gold/yellow tint in water .
Is this soil safe for crystal red
Noice video, how much neocaridina shrimps do you recommend to 5 gallons?
for starting a tank 10 is a nice number and then see how well they breed.
Hi Mark. Pretty sure that jar will crack as it's naff glass. You could have drilled another hole in the cave. Then used hole to suspend rather than silicone.
I removed it because the fish were in it lol I want them in the cave 😂
I'm pretty sure the hole in the side is from when they paint the outside of the cave while it's hanging on a wire to dry . it just hasn't been filled in an spot painted because it's probably cheaper than some other Aquarium caves
It would be cool to attach the cave to the glass with magnets so it's not permanent 🙂
Dude why is this video making me want to go shopping for popsicles 😂🎉😋
Hey new to breeding why does bare bottom increase breeding numbers?
The hole may allow a little bit of flow through it....?
Iam being told it was for a tag
@@MarksShrimpTanks That seem odd to me to put a hole in it for a tag...lol
Maybe...?
cave schuld have a hole on both sides for water circulation. egss need constant flow oxidized water . i have succesfuly breed placos in clay field drainage pipes.
its a reptile cave so I dont think its for water circulation, I am being told is for a tag.
The hole ist for improved watercirculation.
its for adding a tag apparently
I think it depends on where the hole is and how big it is.
It was funny when he was expanding the cup that he could turn it to see the young and then glues it🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Koselig og se på😋👍
Thank you Åge
@@MarksShrimpTanks bor Elverum 🇧🇻😉
which water parameters do you use for your blue dream shrimp.
the cave is a good idea. 🙂
Noe parameters , gh6 kh2 pH will be over 7, conductivity is 250-300, temp is 22c which is a little low I might need to add a heater to this tank.
@@MarksShrimpTanks 22c is low? I keep my neos in 20c.
Wood is WOOD nana na na na ❤❤❤😉
The hole is simply for circulation, right? To keep the water from turning stale within the cave.
Thats what I thought but some people are telling me its where the label attached too.
Ahhh, when you search for an update and then realise it was only posted yesterday. Ah, will have to wait. Doh ! 😆
Have you ever thought about getting clown plecos? They are slightly smaller than the bristlenoses
not yet 😀
its to release fumes and humidity in a reptile tank but with what your doing it will allow water to drain when you do a water change
The hole is to let air into the mold to get the part loose, you can fill it.
You want spray glue for the bottle.
I believe the hole in the cave is just for the retail tag.
The hole is there as that's where the label for the pice tag was
So shrimp are breeding in your plant bucket
I siliconed gravel to the bottom of my tanks, looked good for a while but the gravel starts to pop loose.
why did you do that 😂
Baby shrimp baby shrimp baby shrimp🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐
22.02 what is the planet name..??
what you mean ?
Chack Your video 🎥 time 22 minutes which plants🌱 in your hands tell me please
I’d imagine if it was a thought out decision the hole is to allow water flow in the cave if there was no hole likely no new water would enter since you can’t compress liquid (without enough force to freeze it but that takes huge atmospheric pressures and our pumps/filters aren’t that strong lol) more supporting evidence to this theory is that if the hole is to allow air to exit when filled with water the hole would be at the highest point in the cave allowing it to actually do that task the hole could also be a completely over looked aspect on his part and may only be there for packaging purposes (like if a tag was ran through it for example)
Ive actually been back to the shop and looked at these and it was for a tag, the one I had just had a sticker with a barcode on stuck to its base.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I always try my best to respond to comments as quickly as possible. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Lol the hole is for the store to loop a price tag through it though it might be good to have so air dosent get trapped(source) “i work at a pet shop”/“trust me bro”
its for a tag, I was in the store and they had some with tags on.
As far as I know, the hole is only used to attach the little shop leaflet thing, it's not a necessity for the animals
Thank you Pump
they put the hole in it to put a tag on it
hey are you Norwegian
No Iam Scottish but I live in Norway 👍😁
@@strider5119 Right, I can't argue with that.
years back I seen a neo setup that was in Taiwan and all they had was a large square concrete ponds, no plants or anything and they were breeding thousands of neos in it with hundreds of large bristlenoses, thats where I got the idea for this tank.
I do agree with you though its not so pretty but my main goal of the channel is breeding shrimp first.
First
Hi Mark, great video. You could use house plant in tanks, they help filter the water.
Ckeck PlantLife Project youtube channel for info
I will check that out thank you.
