  • This is a long term review of the Excellent H and B Forge medium camp hawk. I show the versatility of a tomahawk, and what a hawk has to endure to earn a spot in my pack. I make no bones about it, there are better tools for some of the jobs this hawk performs in this video, but few can accomplish the variety of tasks this simple tool can ( tomahawks in general) . If your looking for a light weight jack of all trades tool that is hand made with excellent craftsmanship H and B forge is definitely worth considering !
    H and B Forge website :
    www.hbforge.com
    I was a little rushed towards the end, as my camera battery was dying so I felt a little tight on time and did not get the ending quite how I wanted it. Hopefully it still conveys how I feel about the hawk, even if i did butcher it with editing LOL.
    In this video I tried to keep a comment in mind I had run across on a forum a few weeks ago, Im paraphrasing here but it went something along the lines of ;
    "a tomahawk is not as useful as a knife and not as good at chopping or splitting as an axe making it useless for bushcraft " and " therefore it must stay at home most the time".
    I also read another good one along the lines of " people who buy tomahawks only buy into them because of the fighting aspect of them and it makes them feel cool"
    Well I am not claiming its the best bushcraft tool out there ...... but I hope the video shows that the tomahawk can be a very effective tool in certain circumstances.

    This is an excellent representation of our hawks. Thank you so much! They are extremely versatile as you have very aptly demonstrated. I will add a couple of things. The polls ARE hardened now and can be used for pounding in tent and trapping stakes, etc. We did not used to harden the poll, so the one you are using in this video may not have been since you've had it for 3 years.
    There have been a variety of comments on the price. Let me just say that they are entirely hand made by my son, Jarrod, using only the best grade of high carbon steel. Nothing is made outside of the US. Amish craftsmen make our leather sheaths and turn our standard handles. And we have been making them since 1965. They are guaranteed for life and when you have been in business that long that is saying a lot. Buying American from a company that stands 100% behind their product is-to most people-worth paying a bit more. You will not be disappointed.

      +mary barber , Thank you! and thank you to everyone at H & B. This is one of my favorite cutting tools I own! I am also very excited to see axes added to your line up! Thanks for the update on the hammer poll, I have made an annotation in the video. It was my pleasure to try and showcase the ability of this fine tool, I have no doubt it will last my lifetime!

      Hello, I am extremely interested in a couple of these poll hawks for my son and I for bushcraft. Just a question about the small camp hawk version: Does it have a smaller head or a thinner handle or both? Any info would be appreciated.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  8 лет назад

      +tgillies101 I believe the SMALL hawk has a 3/4 pound head and uses there small ( thinner) handle . The medium hawk has a 1 lb head and uses there large hawk handle. Best bet would be to contact them directly www.hbforge.com/contactinfo.php or call them with the number listed on the site page I linked . hope this helps !!

      I dont think your axes or hawks are expensive. I think they are on par with their quality. I have a small camp axe and a medium camp hawk and both are amazing. A hand forged hawk of this quality is a bargain at that price. Anyone who comments on the price must not be much of a collector or very familiar with the price of hand forged tools. They ought to check out the prices of some of the other options out there.....

      Lex, yes in the past I have used it to help skin deer or cattle. Also used it like an daze. Traditional tomahawk with the tapered eye and hickory handle can be knocked loose and re-oriented and lashed to a hand.e and used like an daze, like a carpenter's tool. Also can be used without the handle , like an you that Eskimos use. Dance Canterbury at Wilderness Outfitters, Patfinder School gives a good discussion on tradition tomahawk and why he prefers them for camping/survival situations.

      yes, i do imagine that once one has built up skill, being able to knock loose the hawk head can make it a quite useful multi tool indeed. I will have to try and find some videos to learn from however, as hawks are not that common to see over here in Europe, and i dont really know anyone who regularly carries and uses one.

    I have an H and B tomahawk I traded for around 1972 from a reenactor. Used it for camping at Friendship and other events. Simply the best! Authentic and useful! Will go to my children when I'm gone! There are some other decent hawks, but H and B set the standard long ago! Only ones I would buy! I'm going to introduce my grandchildren to my hawks when they get a little older so we will have fun throwing, camping,etc!

    GREAT VIDEO, Dude! Your Bushcraft expertise in showing the "versatility" of the tool is truly admirable!... I recently ordered the H and B small camp hawk myself - just for a really handy, excellent quality, lightweight tool to slip into my belt (I intend to replace the handle with fancy stained curly maple). Of course, for larger woodworking lobs, I use a good axe (or Sthil chainsaw ;-). IMHO, "matching the right tool to the right job" is just the common-sense thing to do... but, a traditional "tomahawk style" camp hawk is a really SATISFYING tool to use - perhaps because the "simple efficiency" of it just somehow seems to resonate in our DNA on a very primal level?

    Excellent demo of the tool and of your woodscraft skills. H&B deserves kudos, too. I was looking for a light hawk of good quality, so when I saw that H&B would be at the living history gathering in Kalamazoo recently I had my brother go and check them out in person (he lives near by) since he is a blade guy. He called me (the joys of cell phones) from the booth to say the H&B wares were head and shoulders above any of the other hawks other vendors were showing. So I had him pick me up one of the small camp hawks, as I want to put together a "light" bushcraft kit. On receiving it, can't be happier. Well worth the price for a well- made in the USA tool, the hammer forging marks give it character, the blade came sharp and with a few strokes on a ceramic rod it was up to the paper test. The small camp ax head is listed as 3/4 pound and 1 lb total with 15" handle. Definitely has the mass in the head, so even at this size it has a good momentum on the swing. Looking forward to getting into the woods with it.

    I bought the large camp axe from H&B a couple years ago and I absolutely love it. Takes and holds a great edge. And will take any abuse you give it. I went with the large to extend its functional 'season' as I live in wisconsin, and I don't know anyone who goes into the woods in winter with anything less than a 3/4 or full sized axe. The large camp axe allows me to use it until about december when I need to break out my axe till spring.

      @@Scablands_Scavenger which hawk would you recommend primarily for solo use to process relatively small sticks and branches made of hard dry dead knotty wood? for instance which weight, steel and edge geometry on the hawk?
      I like the idea of the cold steel pipe hawk based on your demonstrations for its performance to weight ratio and that the hammer side is fully functional as a hammer, but it will take skilled effort to get it up to a standard to work properly (fitting head etc)
      Not sure if if it is heavy enough for old hard dead wood though? Whatever I get it needs to never chip out!
      Thanks for any suggestions

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  2 года назад +2

      @@impermanenthuman8427 I will try and answer, keep in mind this is just my opinion and worth what you paid for it. Also In the area I live we do not have much hard wood, mostly ponderosa pine, other conifers, aspen and some brush wood that is smaller and somewhat hard such as hawthorn and alder. For the type of work you describe most hawks would probably work fine as long as you do not put a fine edge on them or expect axe like performance. The heavier the hawk the better it will split, no getting around that. A wide bit also helps CRKT, H&B. For my own preference I typically do not carry a hawk over 18-20 ounces. There is a point in weight (IMO) where the hawk loses its lightweight advantage and the slim handle becomes a liability vs an axe of equal weight. A hawk handle can break if the head becomes stuck in a large piece of wood. This happens easier with a large heavy head 24oz plus. I normally run a convex edge, just personal preference and has its pro/cons. The pipe hawk is a good general purpose hawk, it will need fitting as you mentioned, (to be honest I have re ground and re-fit almost every hawk I own- from Cold Steel to the $$customs). It also has a relatively small head/handle contact area which can mean faster handle wear. I have noticed the CS stuff seems a little harder and can chip rather than roll if too thinly sharpened. This is not a big issue with a less aggressive edge. What I have learned owning what I do is that I can take just about any one of them out and use it effectively, they all have strengths and weaknesses.

      @@Scablands_Scavenger thanks for the good detailed answer, appreciate it!
      After seeing your review of the hawks made by walkbyfaith777 I will probably go with one of those, although I don’t remember seeing anything about the hammer side of their hawks being hardened for use as a hammer on nails etc? If they their hammers sides are hardened for hammering nails then definitely walkbyfaith hawks will be my choice, if not then their hawks that have an ‘adze’ blade on the back instead of a hammer may be very handy for digging for uses that a trowl would normally be needed
      Although those CS pipe hawks really do look amazing once they have been polished and blued and the shafts have been stained and darkened, but at the end of the day walkbyfaith hawk blades are probably the best I am ever going to find based on your review 😁

    I have a large and a medium camp hawk axe and love both. I also have a couple Philippine bolos made from leave springs which are good for the type of jungle brush here. The bolos have wooden sheaths because leather is supposedly prone to rotting but I've not yet seen that problem. I took a piece of 2x4 lumber and split it after cutting it to about 4 or so inches long then carved out the inside for the profile of hawk then glued back together. It allows the hawk to sit into it from the top and could not be any more instant access. It is simple enough to not raise any eyebrows but besides around the house and property I will take with our 8 year old triplets and 2 german shepherd dogs on local walks for protection. The poll can be used to "tap" the stray dogs if they try to attack either the kids or our dogs and there are lots not on leashes here. It is ideal self defense and I believe pairs well with a bolo or a combination of small in the left hand and large in the right. And....bonus it is a sharp and handy axe :) I love them both. Thanks h&b. I am getting ready to buy another large camp axe. Maybe mount one on the wall next to a kerosene lantern :)

    This is actually my favorite hawk. Now with that said, I've been throwing my H&B Shawnee hawk for over twenty-five years. However, when I saw that this medium hawk was being offered, I thought it might be lighter to carry in the field, and also easier to teach my kids how to throw without handing them a "mouse hawk". Well, needless to say, the afternoon it arrived, my 13 yr old daughter fell in love with it and "decided" that it was hers. But I wasn't going to make it that easy... If my kids want something, they need to "earn it". So I decided that she needed to sink twenty in a row if she was to claim my new hawk as her own... Needless to say, she accepted the challenge and even though it started to rain a little, by dinner time, I had no choice but to order myself another hawk. After that, I would take her to the local rendezvous. But with no bad habits, she kept consistent, threw for fun, and let the other folks get frustrated. And though she has no interest anymore, I still have her tomahawk resting on my nightstand.

    Great video! You present your opinions in a very clear and open minded way. I like your reviews. People say that a tomahawk is inferior to an axe for wood processing yet a lot of the bushcraft community believes that you should be able to split wood with your knife by batoning. There is no consistency to those two points of view. A hawk is the compromise between a large knife and an axe in my eyes. I just can't decide if I want the small camp hawk or the medium. I feel like I have large enough knives that the small hawk would be redundant. Is the medium camp hawk as small as you would go or do you think that the small camp hawk is still a serviceable tool. I have large knives that weigh around a pound already. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Hey man, I absolutely love this video! Really appreciate all of the in depth detail, as I have been thinking of picking one of these up for my future campouts. so far the axe that I have right now is missing half a handle, so Im looking to upgrade. My question is, would you reccomend the medium or small camp hawk for long campouts where im moving around alot? Thanks!!!!!

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  8 лет назад +1

      I would definitely go with the medium, it is very portable anything smaller I feel would really struggle to chop or cut with any real efficiency. Thanks for the comments and hope this helps !

    Hello! It's a great video!
    I think you can help me, because you have tested so many tomahawks.
    I want to buy a hawk for survival/combat. The three options are the trail hawk, the frontier hawk and the pipe hawk.
    Trail hawk is good because it’s light and it has a hammer poll but it doesn't have a beard.
    Frontier is good because it’s light and it has a nice beard, but it doesn’t have a hammer poll.
    Pipe is good because it has the hammer poll and the beard, but it's heavy a bit.
    What do you think, what should I choose?

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  7 лет назад +1

      A very tough choice. You pointed out all of the major differences of the hawks your choosing from... I would say because you want a combat/survival then I would go with the trail hawk, because it is lighter and faster in the hand than the pipe hawk, the pipe hawk is great for camping and woodsmanship and would work in a fighting role but is a little slow and heavy one handed compared to the trail hawk. The frontier is a great tool VERY light weight to pack but for survival I will always go with the hammer option ( thinking especially of the urban survival uses as well) . This is all just my opinion of course but I hope it helps you make a decision !!

    Great video, thanks! I was all set to buy a CRKT Chogan when I read your comments about the H&B Forge hawks. Now my only question is whether I want the medium or large camp hawk or the GOShawk.

    • @Stariana19
      @Stariana19 4 года назад

      If you don't mind me asking, what did you end up purchasing? I too was thinking of buying the CRKT Chogan Woods tomahawk and having my husband modify it to resemble the H&B Goshawk... but then again I'm thinking of skipping all that and just buying the H&B Forge GOShawk.

    I teach Bushcraft and woodsman skills. I trying to find a good economic Hawk for me and my students. I can no find a vid on the large one. Has anyone have the larger one for comparison..

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  4 года назад

      I do not have any personal use with the large camp hawk, the weight puts it in the same class as a pack axe so that may have something to do with the lack of popularity. As a side note the size and weight is very similar to the CRKT Woods Chogan or the Cold Steel Rifleman hawk ( weight 1.5lb head, and blade/cutting length 4"). It may be worth the time to explore the less expensive options available to see what size weight is best suited to the tasks you have in mind before commissioning an H&B in either size, both will have their advantages and limitations.

    Do you think if you was just gunna buy 1 would you get that medium camp ax or the Shawnee tomahawk? With throwing as its primary purpose but if need be do things like in your vid.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  3 года назад +2

      I don't have any experience with the Shawnee Hawk so cant compare the two really. If your main use will be throwing though that may be the one to get as it is more tailored for that use, without the hammer poll the balance may feel better than a camp hawk for throwing. Sorry I can't be much more help!

      OL I see yours in your description but, $70 for something a Estwing will do? I understand it's not a tomahawk.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger

      Hopefully you can return the item if it is defective. Generally a gamble buying off of ebay unless it is a known seller with good reputation.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  3 года назад

      I really cannot comment on what an item is worth to you. Everyone will have a differing point of view, especially when it comes to value and worth. Many other aspects are this way, clothing, cars, houses, food. If an Estwing accomplishes the tasks you need to accomplish then it sounds like you need not buy a tomahawk...unless you just want one.

    which is more useful the h&b or the traillhawk? in you opinion?

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  7 лет назад +3

      They are both useful. It depends on what you are using them for, really. The trail hawk is cheaper and lighter has a smaller blade and is generally a smaller head profile... a minimalist tool lets say. The H&B is more of an old school hand forged work of art. Its heavier, chops a little better, splits slightly better, made by a craftsman, used by a woodsman who appreciates such things etc... nothing wrong with either one, they both cut wood. Having said this I would not trade my H&B for 10 trail hawks, not because it is better, but because I just like it that much..... it was not mass produced and stamped out by a nameless worker, but because it was hammed into shape and forged by a single man and shipped to me... and now I use it with that knowledge strange I suppose but there you have it.

    • @SINESTERSERPENTSIXXX
      @SINESTERSERPENTSIXXX 7 лет назад

      guess i just prefer flexability in anything i use and i have seen trail hawks used in place of 5/6 different tools and still do a pretty fair job of getting the work done.

    I didn't know this company existed. Prices look reasonable compared to the 2hawks version. I have the Cold Steel Hawks that work fine, but I would love to move up into a tool like this one. Thanks for posting the video. I searched Amazon and didn't see these so i assume you have to buy direct from the company?

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  6 лет назад +1

      Ordering from them is the best option, every once in a while I see a few on Amazon but not very often and generally just one or two in stock. When you order from H&B you will have more options such as handle length and whether or not you want the handle press fit onto the head ( more permanent ) or left off for you to fit to your liking ( my preferred option as I remove the head often). Thanks for checking out the video !
