Cool video! As a Kiwi I really enjoyed it. However, "Wh" in most Maori names here are pronounced "F" and the following a becomes more of an o. So in the case of Whangamomona it would be pronounced Fonga-momona. It's confusing and many kiwis get it wrong too!
Once you know the consonants, wh = f, and ng being used at the beginning of words; it's pretty simple. The vowels (a: ah, e: eh, i: ee, o: awe, u: ew) are all the same length unless they are marked as long (ā, ē, ī, o, ū).
Great video! Definitely don't envy you on having to pronounce those New Zealand place names haha, those can be difficult. I started my own channel where I talk about geography/history, and pronunciation is something I'm worrying the most about haha.
How could we start a United Nations of Micro Nations? If one exists all ready please tell me! I would love my nation to be reconized by other micro nations
The name Whangamomona translates from two words, literally meaning 'fat valley' - Whanga meaning 'valley' and momona meaning 'fat'. It gets its name from the bountiful number of birds that lived in the forests prior to European settlement in the area. The Māori would be able to quickly fill up their bags and feed the birds to the families in their tribe, or Pā.
The pronunciation Manawatu-Wanganui was quite a bit off but u were close with Taranaki, and I live in PN the capital of M-W and I have never heard anyone call us Man-Wangers, though i have never been to Whangamomona
Also while Manawatu-Wanganui is one region they r quite separate and have very different rugby teams, Manawatu currently has the mighty Turbos and Wanganui has the Butchers, so its not the turbos they hated like u showed but Wanganui.
It flows more then how u were saying, u were breaking the syllables up as u said the word, though I am european kiwi and thus don't pronounce it the maori way as all maori names have slightly been changed over time, but it is said more like Munawa-too, with the Munawa said fast until the t hits and then moves into a longer oo or u sound connecting to the t. Though I am no expert. And I am not even going to try with Wanganui as the pronunciation has tons of things in there that muck me up and I don't wish to offend people over the missing H which changes the whole pronunciation completely.
I live in New Zealand and the north island and this seems pretty strange as well as having animals as president and i have to find this place and visit it
Emperor_Mudkipz can't agree more. It dose annoy me slightly when they mispronounce the native language of my country. But we would be the same trying to say words or names from other country's
I didn't even know about this and I live there. But I'm honestly not even surprised. This is exactly the kind of shenanigans kiwi's get up to when they get mad.
Country name : Flaeginasia Capital city : Ordo Extension : 200 square meters Goverment : Kingdom, ruled by Queen Queen : my mom (72 years old) Flag : Blue stripes with yellow crown on the top left corner Population : 280 Currency : Aereki (half a pound of a white sheep wool) National anthem : all hail protect the queen THIS IS NOT A JOKE

revin hatol Ooh ouch no it doesn't.
The wh is pronounced like a f e.g. whanganui is pronounced fung-a-nu-ee
The pronunciation Manawatu-Wanganui was quite a bit off but u were close with Taranaki, and I live in PN the capital of M-W and I have never heard anyone call us Man-Wangers, though i have never been to Whangamomona

Though with Whangamomona the Wh should sound like an F not a w, this is also what i was talking about with the missing H in Wanganui

Emperor_Mudkipz can't agree more. It dose annoy me slightly when they mispronounce the native language of my country. But we would be the same trying to say words or names from other country's
