The Good and Bad sides of Heldale Loch

  • After a few years now of visiting Heldale on the island of Hoy, I've discovered that there's an easy way and a hard way to fish it.
Unfortunately, the hard way seems to be the best.
Being one of the deepest lochs in Orkney makes it a challenge to fish from the shore with plenty of water to cover.
I have spent 3 days going around the Loch at times and seeing 3 or 4 fish for my efforts.
But this Loch always gives you the chance at something special (If you can get it to the net)
As you may have seen in previous my Heldale videos, I've lost a couple of absolute crocodiles here and had myself a few arctic char.
The North side is shallower and is fairly easy to wade with nothing to hinder you but the odd toe boulder.
The South Side however, has a near sheer drop in places with deep holes and boulders the size of family cars.
The South Side for me seems to be the side where the magic happens though (eventually) so I'll plod on as long as I can.

The Motoroil UV seems to do a turn 😉

Stunning location. Keep 'Plodding On' and catching those wild brownies. Cheers

when it goes right, the sun shines that bit brighter, the sky goes that bit bluer and the birds sing that bit louder, class video mate 👍👍

I have been visiting Hoy on a regular basis since 1978 but have mostly concentrated on its wonderful Sea Trout at the north end of the island.
