CORRECTION - at 0:32, ⚽ is supposed to be -hi -ATR. Oops!
This is like a sillier version of labelling the Proto-Indo-European laryngeals _h₁, h₂_ and _h₃_ because you can't decide how they actually sounded.
Except the language you're documenting is spoken by people who are still alive and JUST RECORD THEM HAROLD! 😂
@@sophiejones3554 Well, I mean, this IS the problem. You can record the sounds, you can use x-ray or something to see the articulation in each case but those will be allophones. The properties of the un-contextualised abstracto-forms are the source of debate.
@@TheLordDarkmount that makes no sense: if we're talking about a living language then phonemes are inherently contextualized and concrete. That's like saying if you collect DNA samples you're not really getting the human genome because you don't have genes, you have allelles. Like yes, allelles are all that exist. Studying hypothetical 'neutral' genes can't tell you anything about a creature that actually exists. Similarly, studying hypothetical 'neutral' phonemes does not actually tell you anything about the language. Studying the allophones would though.
Marshalese is a living language. It needs to be studied like a living language. Proto-Indo-European is long dead, and besides that it wasn't ever a single language in the first place probably. It was almost certainly a dialect continuum spanning multiple languages, the way you see with Italian, Spanish, and Provençale in the modern day. Some Italian speakers can understand some Spanish speakers and some Spanish speakers can understand Provençale, but someone from Provence would not understand someone from Sicily or Cordoba. That kind of thing. Trying to study Marshalese the same way you study dead languages that maybe weren't really even languages to begin with only results in absurdity. What matters is how the people sound, not some hypothetical that never existed nor ever will.
@@sophiejones3554 if I understand correctly, the problem is that we know what sounds are produced to mean what phonemes, but if we are to name phonemes after sounds then we have to decide on a `canonical' one; or, just break tradition and use symbols that have no connotation
basically, genes and alleles are a bad biology comparison, a better one might be taxons and traits (for example the taxon known as `Carnivore', despite some of its members being strict herbivores, and it only containing a tiny fraction of carnivorous species)
"looks like the man's got a snake on his researchgate photo"
i fucking died 😂

So those copypastas filled with emojis after every word were onto something...
These are always my favorite topics, contention between different analyses in linguistics. Nivaclé determiners is another example. Evidentials? Deictic markers? Demonstratives? Tense indicators? Just plain determiners?
Wow that’s me
the vc joining sound almost gave me a heart attack
I don't understand how you don't have more subscribers and viewers? Like your videos are quality
Bad audio quality + the marketing skills of a dead herring
@babelingua I just think that not enough of us subscribers are thinking of sharing your videos like we could. Also linguini videos are kinda niche but your videos have a kind of general appeal to them that can appeal to people who've never taken a linguistics class
0:30 wait this guy teaches in my department
Mark Hale is a prof of mine! Brilliant dude
strongest "1 2 3 4" fan:

That man looks like the type of guy who has a double hayabusa chariot in his garage
This is by far your bestestest video m8
Absolute madman
You need to adjust the sound of the SFX, your voice, and the music to flow together. Right now your voice is the lowest, which should _not_ be the case ideally.
How does this channel only have 5k subs
0:32 there's two [-hi +ATR] vowels here
the football should be [-hi -ATR]
W😢sh
Hi, sorry I just wanted to point out that phones are any realization but phonemes are the ones that matter
