Great points on budget collecting. I think a lot of us are on a somewhat limited budget...whether you're just starting out with not much money, or married with kids, or retired, there are many times in your life that a smaller budget is necessary. I enjoy picking up a $30 dollar card from my list, as much as a $200 card. They're all building blocks to your overall collection.

Your message is true no matter what people collect, comics, toys, stamps, coins, cards, or vintage glass, having a budget and being willing to make an occasional trade or purchase a lower grad place holder can only increase the value of a collection over time.
Really what it takes is discipline in your spending. Try to set a focus on what you really want, and then save your budget to get that. I only have $100/month budget. A couple weeks ago I was able to pick up a Sandy Koufax rookie in a 2 by being disciplined, staying focused on picking up a grail card, and saving my money. Absolutely worth it. So you can get something at most price levels if you are disciplined. You have some great tips in this video!

Now I am saving for a '54 Topps Ted Williams. Next year I think I will focus on more low-hanging vintage fruit. and just rotate years like that.
This is a very good topic choice for the vintage community. I am a sub to you and a midlifer as well. The bottom line is, in my opinion, collectors gets ( influenced) into some way of thinking. You can make a nice addition just be steering clear of what everyone is trained to think.. Price any graded card one step shy of (collector grade).. You will find alot of nice cards that folks have limited themselves of interest in. We all own our collection, so some random thought process doesn't own us!

Thanks for the very informative video for those of us that are not baseball fans. In Canada it is primarily hockey, so going to start looking out for any old ungraded baseball cards, now that I have a bit of any idea of what I am looking for.

Great topic and video Bill! I agree there are some great bargains out there especially for stars of the 60s and 70s. I try to stick to a monthly target, sometimes like February I go over the target. The most I have ever spent on a card is $450 so I am always looking for deals, usually ungraded.
Hey Steve! You buy some amazing cards ungraded and then grade them. That's a great way to save serious money building an amazing collection, and you have a great one! Nice video and good advice. For most of us guys who don’t have deep pockets it took years to build our collections. I took my time and chipped away. I kept my focus, avoided rabbit holes, and built the collection of my dreams. The biggest challenge is patience. Many don’t have it. They want a great collection overnight. Bill, now that I subscribed to you this morning, I am watching more of your videos. Great topic, collecting on a budget, however I would suggest to your listeners to stay away from grading, as it is like gambling, unless you know what you are doing. I have been collecting for over 50 years and I still get burned once in a while. Build your raw collections, once your budget increases look at some of better cards to grade. Now as I figured you were a Cardinals guy, as am I, you disappointed me by telling folks to get 1950 or 1951 Musial cards. Those are difficult next to impossible to find. I will keep it at that. Next, have you noticed how Ken Boyer RCs are finally getting some love? You showed your 1960 Kaline AS card, one of my all time favorite designs, in fact I put that set together all PSA 6 or greater for all cards less than $70 each, except the Mantle. The All Star sets from the late 50s to early 60s is loaded with HoFers. Great for budget collection builders.
Hey Brian, I appreciate your subscribing. To address your point about Musial. I this video I stated other than his rookie card and early 50s Bowman cards his cards are very cheap. In this case, I didn't didn't make the point very clearly and kind of conradicted myself a few minutes later. I said his early Bowman cards could be found ungraded for 50-100 dollars and that's probably a little low. I do these videos without a script and in one take. Most of the time, even without any notes. If I catch that I've made a mistake, I correct it with text onscreen. But sometimes I still miss mistakes I've made. I have noticed Boyer finally getting some love, and I'm happy to see it. I think more collectors are discovering what a great player he was. I also recommend people be very careful when buying ungradwd cards to grade. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and you bring up some great points.

Great video. I’ve been buying some 70s cards raw at 15 bucks or less. This week I picked up a 75 hank Aaron for 11 bucks. It was advertised as very good, I would say its excellent. You have to be careful and know what to look for when buying raw cards, but you can definitely find some good deals.

To your point of buying ungraded: Within the last year I bought a 1948 bowman Musial rookie, finally. I purchased it ungraded with tape on the top front, but otherwise in great condition. I suspect someone back in the day put it in a scrapbook. I was able to do this for less than $300. There was risk that it could have been altered or faked. I sent it in to SGC and it was assigned an expected 1. It was cool I was able to touch the card before it was holdered. The condition and being ungraded allowed me to own an iconic card. There was a recent sale of a copy that was similar with the tape but in worse condition for $390. Timing is always a factor.
Wow, that's awesome you were able to snag that card. In contrast, I'm hoping to pick up a Musial rookie at the national and am hoping I can find a nice one for under a thousand bucks. I would love to find a nice ungraded one, but that's scary for me. But I could definitely save money that way!

Have you seen the RUclips video from about 3 yrs. ago By Bob Costas Remembers Bob Gibson? It`s fantastic. I have a pretty nice 1971 topps Seaver that has a very faint 1/2 inch tape mark that is a psa 1 that you really can barely see and Im very happy with the card. You could spend about 2oo$ on a better graded card but you could spend that cash on some really cool other cards (as a colllecter). Also a while back I sent a 1971 topps Ray Fosse and Mark Belanger ( I know commons but cool guys on multiple world series teams) both o-pee-chee to SGC. that are the only ones graded, both are 7`s. I payed $2.55 for each card + grading. To me it`s kinda like would you rather have some barbeque and potato salad and some apple pie or escargot? Hope you get felling better. Thank You. Jim.

Its fun to watch videos with guys dropping thousands on a single card, but that just isnt reality for most of us. The last year or so I have really gotten into vintage football, and the last couple months spreading into baseball. Love seeing videos with amazing cards that the average collector can pick up, yet are still great cards. Now if only we could do something to make the cost of grading more reasonable.

Go for second year cards. Second year cards are excellent. Also, the Topps All-Star cards from c. 1958 to c. 1960 can be somewhat affordable.

Haven't done much vintage. I have a couple clemente's got the 1968 all star for $3 or so, pretty nice shape. The 1972 in action for $5 i think.
