as always, here's my pinned comment with revisions or extra notes: - i've gotten quite a few DMs about the shapes being projected. I just connect the HDMI input into my computer, then open photoshop and create any sorts of shapes and colors i'd like to! - yes, all of my studio shoots are done with one roll of film. i love the challenge of being limited to 10 shots, but for clients i shoot more than one roll lol
This video is honestly so sick. As a photography student (at a really good photography university tbf) I sometimes just miss things like this and the explaining about the film iso was really useful as I have really been wanting to do a shoot like this on film but haven't found the inspiration, so thank you! You are a really 'natural' RUclipsr in a way, it's like you have been doing this for years and it is just so relaxing to watch you shoot. Never stop posting man!
I’m so glad you decided to share it, even though it’s your secret sauce. It was awesome to watch your process - I think the last photo on the roll ended up being the best. Oh also one note: maybe try a lav mic? Audio in the studio shots was a bit tough to hear, but also wasn’t a big deal when the visuals were so gorgeous. Can’t wait to see more content like this!
I had a LAV on...thanks for the suggestion, i'm working on learning audio and it'll just get better over the next couple videos (hopefully). it's definitely a learning curve. but thank you!
I admire your confidence to work a fair bit “out there”. You can never go wrong (photographically) expressing your personal vision. Thanks for showing us. The production quality is superb. You seem to be ok with working hard. That’s a key to success.
I love it! Just maybe if you could help me with the rule of 60th? In order to shoot at 1/60 or faster I am supposed to meter/shoot 1 stop underexposed (like iso 400 metered as iso 800?) and push the film in development? Did I get that correctly? Thank you so much for the help 😊
A good rule of thumb for setting shutter speeds that won’t blur while hand-held is to use one over the focal length. For instance, if you’re shooting with a 50mm lens, don’t go less than 1/50th of a second. If you’re shooting a 28mm lens, don’t exceed 1/30th a second, etc. The reason being, the longer the focal length the easier it is to blur.
Great video Linus. I've not shot film in low light precisely because of the reasons you pointed out at the start. I recently started thinking about trying it out with some 800 speed film pushed to like 3200, so hopefully after watching this, I'll give it a try.
This video is pure gold. Thank you very much for sharing your creative process. Your art is fantastic! Please keep making awesome videos like this one!
this is SO helpful, i appreciate you explaining this cus i’ve never known how to go about shooting film in low light but i’ve always wanted to. Thank you!!!!! :-)
i'm definitely loving your content and your photos, i myself shoot alot in low light as well never really in a control studio more of the street. Night Crawling but thanks for the knowledge man. Sending much love and good vibes.
I have resisted “flash” photography for years…. Too many memories of bad family pics with red eye, and washed out images……. But…. You have opened my eyes to a whole new perception of artificial light photography… artistic creative uses for studio lighting, and the wonderful use of rich color on and around your subjects!! Great job!! Inspiring and freeing for me. Thanks
Awesome video man! Love how you work with the model in such a chill but direct way, maybe you could do a video on how to guide models! Definitely something I need to work on :) Also, what model projector are you using? I suppose its a laser projector but when i looked it up they were all crazy expensive. Anyway, thanks for the helpful and fun to watch video! Already excited for the next one.
What about manual focusing in low light? Are you zone focusing? Prob not at that low aperture so I assume you have enough light in the view finder? I just bought a zenza bronica sq-ai and not sure if I’m focusing well. First rolls are at the photoshop guess we’ll see! Cheers
Really helpful. Thanks a lot. I shoot low light but outside only. I never tried the studio. afraid of a lack of creativity with the model ? Maybe ;-) Any advise ?
Hey man I friggen love this! Is your projector made for doing this sort of thing? Or do you think you can use any old projector and just put a solid colour through it?
Hey i just wanna thank you for putting this out! I get the feeling that you might wanna keep your style private but im a beginner at film and im about to try and take some pics! So yeah thank you again ❤️
So that 120d is a constant light AND a flash simultaneously? Also would like to hear about how you metered for the flash. Did you just mess with flash power until the meter gave you a shutter speed faster than 1/60 ?
As this is a lighting tutorial - consider not using that flash transition effect to the developed photos. people may think you also used a flash here...which you didn't
Great video, but question to my lack of understanding. why not to expose for the shadows, at least to be sure you have enough detail for development and then adjust your highlights accordingly to 1, 2 or 3 stops above. Measuring for the highlights and underexposing can give you a negative with no information on certain areas. You wont be able to gain that information even if you push 1,2,3 stops etc when developing. I am just curious, thanks
How were you able to move around your circle creations in photoshop in real time without the photoshop program also displaying through the projector? How were you able to isolate the circles while still able to move them? Amazing video, Thank You!!!!!
sorry lol for film photography! i am in the beginning stages of film photography & i struggle with metering & such. i know you did low light here but it would be awesome to see it in all light aspects!
just got back my first AWFUL batch of film (beginner here). I predominantly use an Olympus OM1, and sometimes a Yashica TL Electro X. The OM1 photos are extremely underexposed and Electro's are totally blurry. This video did help me understand a bit, but i dont get the ISO doubling and "pushing" the film? Can someone explain to me like im a child lol
Beginner Question: I heard that you're not supposed to change the ISO on the camera for the whole roll (if you're shooting Portra 200 at 200 you can't just change it to 400 mid-roll), so did you set it to 1600 for the whole roll?
linusandhiscamera Not necessarily. Flashes can be brighter than continuous light but don’t have to be. One cool thing is that they’re almost instantaneous. So your shutter speed would affect the brightness of the projection, but it wouldn’t affect the strobe at all. You can have independent control of the two types of lights (via exposure) beyond just the power setting on each light. Potential application: a 1/4s shutter with a moving camera could blur the projection and any areas lit by continuous light, while areas lit by strobe would be sharp because the “shutter speed” of the flash is much faster (1/1000 to 1/10,000+ depending on the flash and the power setting).
Nice! How do you find Negative Lab Pro handles colours in a studio like this? I always struggle to get the right skin tones and colours in general because the plugin gets thrown off by the gels and coloramas etc.
It's honestly soooooo hit and miss. Sometimes it'll get thrown off and i'll need to correct it, sometimes it gets it right away. BUT! even when it's completely thrown off (for instance, the photo in this video were), i'm always able to mess with the exposure to find the right colors.
as always, here's my pinned comment with revisions or extra notes:

People will start shooting like this, but will never master it. Linus is the KING of his Masterpieces
haha thank you for that bro. i'm sure get where im coming from.
This is absolutely magnificent! A low lit studio portrait shoot popped in my mind today, and this is the exact video I needed to see! Thank you
glad you liked it!

i've pushed some 800 speed to 3200 and it pushes gracefully! give it a go!

Can you try to do a shoot like this with 35mm for those who don’t have access to 120?

using a projector as a studio light is the most big brain thing I've ever seen... Wish I'd thought of it
sounds like a pentax 67. awesome video man.
you’re completely right! 6x7 is my baby

try shooting photos of some friends you’re comfortable with instead of a “model” to warm you up to it!
You killed this shoot🔥
Those teal shadows. I still can’t figure out how the red light is creating a teal shadow! Insane. What color is the small led fill?
it was a yellow-green!
his body creates a negative space which is filled in by the green light
T'es un bon toi ! Bravo
i love how your brain works and those curls ❤
You're so talented. Your art always excites me. Thank you for sharing this with us.

hehehe thank you :)
These are so sick man. Makes me wish I got a continuous light rather than a flash strobe
you should try out some low budget LED lights like the mini panel first! then upgrade if you enjoy it.

I’m curious if you achieved the same effect with colored flash filters. These are great and moody portraits.
i've never used flashes - but my suspicious with flashes is that it would completely remove the projected light from the image!
