100% with you on this! I just now discovered him and immediately feel a click, like I've found something that I should have already a long time ago. Love the well-thought-out and informed narration and views, but also the little goofy bits sprinkled at seemingly perfect intervals. I'm Finnish and people here tend to speak with a very monotone and matter-of-fact style, so I can really vibe with his tone, not too energetic nor too excited. Also because of that, the abrupt bursts of emotion really catch me of guard and make me smile. I'm not in the mood to play games or watch movies/shows myself all that much these days, but somehow his videos captivate all my attention just like that, for the whole duration of the video too! That is no mean feat, and just like you said it feels really comfy and relaxing to hear someone think out loud and explain their thoughts like this.

This game reminded me of it, as they're from relatively the same era of Square late on the PS1... I would love to someday see you do a video on Vagrant Story, one of my favorite games ever, and played by far too few people. Beyond that I think you would genuinely enjoy and appreciate it if you've never played it. It's an utterly unique game, and to me the best looking game on the system. And it's a rare game from that era where the maturity of the writing still absolutely holds up to this day.
edit: The reason this reminds me of Vagrant Story is more than them both being late PS1 Square games; the sphere-grid-based-range combat system for a single player character in a more action oriented jrpg used in Parasite Eve was also used in Vagrant Story, albeit in a more refined state. VS also uses full 3D environments at all times, with free camera movement, so the technique naturally works way better and feels more natural there than in Parasite Eve.
    Also... 35:42 hahaha, bravo
edit2: Well now I feel silly for commenting before watching the end : )

I rewatched The Ring review and I gotta say even though they deal with similar themes the contrast between The Ring game and Parasite Eve is absolutely hilarious.

Today I have found your Vagrant Story video... and I plan to watch many more ;) You sir are a new fresh voice in the gaming reviews space. You have restored my faith in an idea that good writing and postmodernity can coexist and produce something both enjoyable and profound. Keep the good work. Recently I have come back to the essays of David Foster Wallace and I like how your videos resonate on the same witty-ness ;)
I quietly wish that there were some DFW in the space of essays but for games, from PSX milieu. I would like to read something profound as the DFW's Federer piece but for Vagrant Story. Resonant Arc guys are doing a fantastic job close to that field. I think to write something concerning PSX era and beeing simultaneously profound requires a scribe job of Alazlam Durai level. To gather various podcast, comments, describe that era as an experience like let's say Proust, it would be a thing to cherish.

PE1 is such a gem. A relic of a time when weird games actually had a pretty good budget and were made by big companies. I miss the 95-2005 period so much, before the dlc, the microtransactions, nft, cookie cutter games that are all the same and uninspired… every year a bunch of super original stuff came out, we really didn’t know how good we had it game wise back then

Nice to see someone else talk about this game. This was one of my favorites since I bought it for myself with the money my parents got me for my birthday the year it was released. I remember getting stuck on Day 2 in the zoo and then having to go back and buy the strategy guide. Memories.

As a molecular biologist; I can say that that was by far not the worst way I heard someone explain the endosymbiont-hypothesis.
The worst way for the record, was George Lucas in the first Prequel-Movie.

    Also, fuck Dawkins!

I’m one of those psychos that had a PS Vita as a teen. I bought this game on a whim and it was so much fun. Old graphics or not I think this game is beautiful. I also liked the lonely atmosphere of the game and I did play it during the holidays so it felt fitting. I also played the 3rd Birthday. And I did appreciate and had fun with the 3rd birthday but more as an independent thing since it really doesn’t feel related at all to parasite eve. Aya is pretty likeable as a protagonist I hope we get to see her again someday.
Great goth review king it brought me some great memories.

Parasite Eve is a proof of concept for a way better sequel. I feel like if the the concepts and mechanics were expanded on and if we go a more open world in between the "levels" it could have been a amazing experience. Of course what we got in PE2 was Resident Evil style tank game with "magic spells" Also the story is a bit out there but so is the the story of Final Fantasy 7 and it's a seminal classic.

When I was a kid in the 90s I was lucky enough to get a copy of parasite eve. Thing is it was region locked to Japan however for some bizarre reason you could bypass it by putting the ye olde cathode ray tube TV (the thicc TV of yore) into black and white mode.
So I got to play Parasite Eve in a moody Noir style with Japanese voice actors and English subs. One of my favourite gaming experiences of that era. Tussles for number one with Medieval if only cos Medievals world, story and art style appealed to me so much as a kid.
Anyway, I'm down for a long review of Parasite Eve from a youtuber I've never heard of, nice "jiggly" focused intro by the way.
