I found your channel several days ago, and today I drove half an hour to buy my first pack of Field Notes. I’m really enjoying your content and your presentation style, and I’m happy to be an early subscriber in a channel that can go far. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for watching and for your comments about the channel! I am pleased you got yourself some field notes, hope the drive was worth it and I hope you enjoy notating in them!
Field Notes are great, but, since a couple of years I have been unable to use them. Had a few strokes, and controling a pen on the small pages of these notebooks have unfortunately become impossible. So, I live vicariously through your experiences with Field Notes notebooks. Best of luck.
Hi Lucas! Thank you so much for inspiring me to get into Field Notes. I've been using pocket notebooks for many years, but I had never come across Field Notes. Having switched to them, I'm never going back! I get through about one notebook per month and I just started my fifth Field Notes yesterday. The care and detail in their design makes them better than anything I've ever used and it's a joy to carry my Field Notes everywhere. As they are truly pocket-sized, I never go anywhere without my Field Notes and this has made my life so much easier. I work as a primary school teacher and setting out my tasks for the day, planning lessons and making meeting notes are so much better with Field Notes. My students always notice when I switch to a new Field Notes and they're excited when they see me writing and making notes by hand, which is also something I'm happy to develop their interest in. I also use my Field Notes for planning my travels, writing down which bird species I spot and training notes and reflections for jiu jitsu - so everything basically! I also appreciate your advice on Blackwing pencils (I personally prefer the 602) which has also been a great new stationery experience for me. So thank you very much for your heartfelt dedication to Field Notes and the wonderful analogue world of writing materials and writing instruments!
Hi Thomas, thanks for sharing! What a great use of Field Notes - I love that your students are also engaged in the changing of the pocket notebook, that means the notebook is serving so many more people :) I wish I could get through about 1 per month, it usually takes me 6-8 weeks per notebook - going faster would allow me to use up more of my inventory, but I do like the time I get to spend with each one, and how much they wear in. Thanks so much for watching!
Absolutely great review! I love how dive deep into the aesthetic vibe of Field Notes, I already am enjoying my Field Notes even more. The coaster idea is so great. This company should totally hire you.
You are enabling me to get one. I've always passed by these notebooks but I somehow keep ignoring them. I'll look into it this time. I adore how much you enjoy paper, it's something i relate to. I also don't care much about technical specs -- it's all about the feel. If I have a favorite pen and it doesn't write well with that paper, it's usually used without much joy in it too I just rush to it to get to the next one I prefer 😂thank you for the in depth content. So glad my algorithm is showing this.
I am so happy that I found your channel. I have been trying to find something to fill this itch I've been having. I didn't realize that it was the pocket notebook. In the past I was extremely into being digital so that I can search and share and all that. At work I abruptly switched from keeping all of my notes, thoughts, and lists on my iPad to using a notebook. It's been great, but I need something for my personal life and this is it. The pocket notebook. You have sold me on Field Notes and will be making my first purchase right after I complete this. I am looking forward to more of your videos.
It is a really nice overview from a fellow notebook lover :) recently I filtered my youtube bubble and went from apps reviews and productivity hustle to paper notebooks and classical philosophy, and here you are, I'm glad I found you. It is first video that I'm watching, but I looked at your other videos' titles and I want to watch most of them as well. On the field notes: I found an interesting thing about branded notebooks. For about 10 years I have bought very cheap a6 notebooks from a closest store for about 20 cents and they served me as a mini bullet journals, todo lists, memos and so on. But the covers were always some bright chinese crap and that made me not caring so much about it's condition. They were dirty, wet, twisted, but I still used them. But every time as the notebook lose some of it' HP (:D) I cared less about neatness of my writing, clearness, I started to write down some random stuff. I had to change something. Once I decided to make my own notebook. Bought a nice quality paper, cutted it for ideal size for my bag pocket, handsewed, glued to the handcarved leather cover. 48 hours and there we are :) and that changed completely the way I write. The neatness came back, my memos were clear and minimalistic once again, I started to stop and think for a moment, is it some shit or is it a valued information that I want to write down. My point is: Branded products have Value as well as handmade ones, that keeps you care about it. Why people buy Field Notes instead of 20 cent notebooks? Because of this. The added value that makes you care. Keep it going, the Paper is the Way.
Thank you for your comment and such a good notebook journey you’ve had. Ultimately there is nothing better than pen and paper - and everything has its use and place from a 20c notebook to a branded or custom made one! Main thing is you’re taking notes! Thanks for watching!
I like notebooks and have used a lot of them. My favs are Moleskine Reporter, small Apica and Field Notes. I use Travelers notebooks for my nightly journal. I've tried to get my stepson hooked on Field Notes. I just subscribed to Field Notes so looks like it's time for a new system. Thanks for a great channel!
Graphically, Field Notes are beautiful. I was watching a review someone did a while ago and he mentioned that the type face used is Futura. Oddly, even though I love the text, it didn't dawn on me until he identified it. It is my absolute favorite type face...often seen in old issues of Arts & Architecture, books about post-war housing and mid-century advertising. I still use it for my correspondence and my invoices and my business cards. I recently purchased something called a "DDC BRAND "STUFF SHEATH" made of leather that protects the Field Notes. However, using one of those would prevent that velvety texture that you love! Interesting video!
Futura is the best! Super minimal but so stylish. I don't know the graphical terms as to why, but it's extremely pleasing! I have looked at the stuff sheath so many times, but I never end up buying it because of the reason you mention - I need that texture on the notebooks!
I have found over the past few years that I don't enjoy using bullet journals. However, I've recently discovered Field Notes and I'm quite happy with the size. It was the size of the bullet journals that kept me from being consistent. I also use fine point Zebra pens which make my handwriting look miraculous (besides being a pretty stainless steel), and I'm able to journal much more easily. I could easily dictate into my phone, of course, but sometimes I don't want to speak out loud. I really like this video. Thank you.
I really enjoyed your video. I use my field notes as a commonplace book and it’s so handy to be able to jot down all the quotes, thoughts, affirmations, etc. I come across on the daily. I too am partial to the dot/grid ruled ones
I also have a notebook love. I already had Field Notes in my mix of notebooks. Raising a small child requires me to have a notebook that I can just grab. I love that Field Notes become beautiful after wear and tear. My daughter sometimes doodles in them (she's almost 2) which I also adore. I make an index on page 0 (the first page) and I proudly put her drawing at the corresponding page number. I have three notebooks, but I carry two. One is for long term lists for example plans I have for our house or projects I am working on. The other like yours is an EDC where I jot down pretty much anything needed for my day or about my day and my daily to do list. I only need a page or two per day. I do use moleskins, but I always use my Field Notes for daily EDC to-do's. Thank you so much for your very entertaining videos. I know a lot of time goes into them and I appreciate it.
I've been a daily notebook user since February this year and just used them before from time to time not carrying one daily. I've only used cheap notebooks with moleskin but I must say I've been convinced to try out Field notes to see if the experience is much better. I've ordered some and can't wait to try field notes. Great video Lukas!
thankful that I live next to the Field Notes HQ. They are opened to the public for very small hours but they have a huge wall of all their notebooks plus theyll give you one for free just walking in. Good stuff.
In the olden times of RUclips you could make a response video to people and I miss that feature. I would make a long response video about why you need a coil. Japanese b6 Maruman notebooks get my love.
Great video. I’m currently using a dot grid Field Notes as my Bullet Journal. I usually carry a Moleskine pocket size, but I’m really enjoying the Field Notes.
It’s a slow process, but it’s part of the fun, I like the fact that I have to go through and interact with many old notebooks to find something. It’s the difficult way, but the more fun way!
Great explanation of why Field Notes are so special. One of my favourites is the oversized Field Notes Pitch Black Set of 2 (3-1/2" × 5-1/2" = 89mm × 140mm), not to be confused with the regular sized set of 3. I used a ruled one at a conference this year - it fits into my jacket pocket and the extra space over the standard version proved very useful. I reordered a pack but chose "Dot-Graph grid" by mistake. This is printed very dark and makes the notebook pretty unusable for me. The lined, however, is perfect.
Interesting - I love the dot graph grid, but I haven't had one where it's printed really dark, usually they're very light so you can choose to 'ignore' them if you need to.
Was gonna say at the beginning of the video we kind of look alike / you look Italian. Io capisco umpo l'italiano ma sto cercando di imparare haha. Dig the field notes and the channel!
I love the Kraft ones. I feel like it’s okay if I make a “mistake”. I’m not exclusively Field Notes yet, but I love the pocket size! Also…. I agree with one blank pages. Too much freedom. I doodle all the time and just can’t do it on blank pages. Need lines, or graph or my favorite dotgrid.
Field notes just have this aura, they're honestly quite over-priced for the lacking durability and paper quality you get. But they're so damn collectable. Wish they still made the dime novel or signature. (Edit: i mean for reference, here in Europe the same price gets you a Leuchtturm or Rhodia, and FN are anything but ubiquitous over here)
They are collectable indeed! You definitely have to hunt for Field Notes in Europe. There's an online store called Escribo, based in Poland which usually has a good range. I've bought FN from them while in Europe.
@@hanslim4031 you always desire and appreciate most whats hard to get i guess😊 i personally always buy leuchtturms or dingbats - they are my favorite❤
"Just stumbled upon your review. Very nice. I'm also obsessed with Fieldnotes. Was a long-time subscriber. Took years for me to resist renewing. Was just in the webshop, but managed to resist. I'm considering whether to make one or two videos with a walkthrough of my old notebooks. It migh be somewhat of a technical challenge because I guess I don't want to show everything."
This is a love letter to Field Notes. I just bought my first 3-pack (California state fair) in Tokyo. Was looking for them for a while, but couldn’t find a cover other than the plain ones.
The State Fairs are a great edition, I love the covers! They will wear in beautifully. Hope you enjoy your first Field Notes and thanks so much for watching!
I would be a Field Notes subscriber if I could choose to only get dot grid paper. I started off with Group Eleven field notes, I have a few left. However, mine don't lay as nicely as yours. When laying on my desk its popped open. I wish it would just lay closed. I did put a clip on it at one point but then realized that took away the quickness and usability I love so much about the notebook. Have you ever carried more than one around with you? What are your thoughts on cases such as Lochby or custom leather covers? Have you used the larger Pitch Black version before? Enjoying your channel, thanks for sharing about our shared interests.
You’re speaking my language. Dot grid is the best! The best solution I have to getting the to lay flat is to really break in the spine. Putting them in the back pocket for a few days will do the trick. I tried the clip thing too and stopped for the same reason. Clipping a pen to the front cover works too, kind of acts like a paperweight. I often carry around 2 - sometimes I’ve started a new one but I’ve still got a to-do or shopping list in the old one, so I keep one in each of my jeans back pockets. Nice and even! I haven’t tried the large format Pitch Black, but I have a set of the standard size ones and I love the cover on those, wears in really nicely. I really like the idea of those custom leather covers, they look so great, but I think I’d feel bad about hiding the field notes itself. I love how worn and feathery the notebooks get through use and I feel like I’d miss out on that by using a cover. Thanks for watching!
@@BlankFirstPage I thought I was the oddball about liking how the Field Notes feels, I will find myself sitting and fidgeting with it often. I agree, the mobility and the feel need to remain free from the extra bulk. I do add stickers to my covers from time to time as well. Looking forward to the next video.
I bought my first 3 pack of the craft paper version many years ago and I have two of them with me all the time. I do use a cover for them because I was rough on them, so much so that the cover fell off my first book. I have done sketches in mine and one sketch in particular that later became the basis of a small apartment we built for my in-laws. I guess I could have done that sketch in any notebook but it felt right in Field Notes.
@@BlankFirstPage one is my calendar/agenda. The other is my inbox. Everything I need to remember while on the go gets written in it then transferred to other notebooks at the end of the day or sometimes the beginning of the next day if I'm really tired. I didn't keep one as an agenda up until a couple of months ago when I missed a few important dates. I forget the series that had the agenda a few years back but I bought 3 packs of them. They have gilded edge pages. I never had a use for the agenda until now.
@@InktronicsBlog Ah the ambition edition! I love that edition. I have also never used the agenda, but I use the Green one as my to-read list, and the red one as my recipe notebook (got videos on both of those!). The colours on that edition were so good, I recently found some cardstock that's similar in colour to the red and green and will try to make notebooks from that.
@@BlankFirstPage That’s the one. I kind of wish they would do a reissue. I have not been following Field Notes as closely as my inventory is far from depleted. I stopped buying them around 4 years ago and I still have enough to last me a few more years. I hope you make a video about your creation, I have been binging your content since last week. 😄 I’ve made some Field Note style notebooks also but I filled them with vintage airmail paper, something similar to velum or tracing paper. It has that crinkle sound you like and not as smooth as velum. This paper has more tooth.
@BlankFirstPage What made mine unique is that I used the covers (a lot of them have leather binding) from old vintage bank memo books that are sized just like Field Notes.
I can't believe I listened to this whole intimate love affair confessional all the while working on making my own A5 notebook. I like Field Notes too though, especially because they are thin enough to easily open them up flat and write across the whole 7" if you like.
I’m pleased I could be the background to the honorable process of making notebooks! Hope they turned out well. I’ve tried my hand at making notebooks a few times, a simple process but lots of detail!
It’s a big ole notebook that’s made from hand-made cotton paper (?). It’s extremely satisfying to the touch, but I still don’t know what to use it for.
I have to know what that giant black book is on your shelf to your left (my right) under all the smaller ones. The paper edge looks incredible, and I'm so distracted. SHOW ME THAT BOOK!
Hey Lukas, love your videos about Field Notes. Did you know that Field Notes has an affiliate program? I’m not sure if you would be interested in that, but it was worth a mention. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your comment! I did not know about the affiliate program, thanks for letting me know, I’ll look into it, might need to collect a few more subscribers though :) thanks for watching!
I started using Field Notes for my journals. I found I liked the small size and the experience of finishing a notebook in two to four weeks over one that I used for months or even years. Feels a bit like an accomplishment when getting through each one.
That's pretty interesting that something as mundane and unassuming as a notebook/journal can be designed and marketed in such a way that it is turned into a collectible item
Nice video 😊 wow! You really like Field Notes 😂 I'm not a writer but I do carry a notebook (pocket size) daily especially at work as an aircraft mechanic. I'm always jotting down things to remember, part numbers, fuel loads, flight numbers, etc., and yes, you convinced me, try a Field Note notebook so I ordered a 3 pack to test but I must confess I ordered a 3 pack of Moleskin also to run my comparison. I'm mainly looking for something more durable and forgiving to the elements since I work outside and am exposed to the weather. So we'll see. But enjoying your video, thanks for posting it and I'll get back to you later about how my comparison turns out. Adios amigo 😉
@@BlankFirstPage the comparison continues 😉 but I do find that the Field Notes is good for me at work. I use some of the items alongside the inside covers. The Moleskin I like mainly for the perforated pages in the back 🤔 so... A decision is pending 😀
Hi, I'm writing from Spain. I'm trying to find a shop where I can buy a Field Notes but I can't find any. Since I've heard that you lived some time in Europe, can you tell me any shop where I can buy a Field Notes?. Thank you.
love pocket notebooks but roll with Moleskine Caheir since they don't have staples. Regardless I enjoyed your review and I don't know if I've been to that stationary store here in Stockholm yet.
Thank you for watching! I am curious what about the staples you don’t like? They can definitely rust and they’re not as secure as full stitching, wondering if you’ve got a specific reason? I prefer the staples over the stitching of the cashiers, but don’t really know why!
@@BlankFirstPageI have large hands and don’t like the feeling of staples when resting my hand against the book. Also, it opens better and stays together longer. FN has way cooler covers though and I like the limited edition ones which can be great gifts.
I think this is the video you mention that you always have a notebook on you, but sometimes not a pencil. If you are ok with pens, I would recommend checking out Pokka Pens. Super simple, 2 piece pens that carry the size of a chapstick, but when in writing mode, they are a full size pen. Sounds like you would enjoy the simplicity and every day carry quality of them.
@@BlankFirstPage Yes, I have them as part of my daily carry as back-ups mostly, but have a decent amount of writing with them. The writing experience is ok, to be honest. I would say slightly better than a standard Bic or Schneider ballpoint pen. Fairly smooth and would probably be similar to the D1 refill you have in your Liliput ballpoint. The main reason to carry these is the extreme lightness and simple ease of use
If you haven't already, you might want to do a video reviewing the "Wanderings Traveling Notebook" because , it has refillable note page inserts held together by an elastic cord. I like the old looking notebook in the back that's sitting on your shelf and has old style paper sticking out of the book.
I'll have to check that out, thanks for the tip! That old looking notebook is made by a brand called Lamali Paris, the notebook itself is Biblio indigo. The paper is made from cotton. Very cool, although I haven't found a use for it yet.
Not specifically, but it’s in the works! I’ve got a few videos where I show my current field notes and talk a bit about what’s gone into them that month. Thanks for watching!
It’s very true they can definitely tear. I think I’ve had one or two where the cover has come off completely, and I’ve had to use tape to secure and reinforce it. But I’m typically moving on to a new one after one or two months and it’s usually not enough time for that much wear to occur on mine.
I, too, fell in love with FN a few yearsss back so I totally get it. It made me fell back into the "planning/journaling habit". But then I fell into the fountain pen rabbit hole and found myself in an excruciating decision to steer away from it 🙊🙈🙉 the paper quality isn't just meeting my needs. So I moved on to higher quality japanese paper 😍 These days, I use the FN sized ntbks but with fountain pen friendly paper. It's a win-win 😊 Some days, I still pop out one from my unused collection but sadly revert back to regular pens lol. It's a compromise haha! And I still look at my used and unused collections once in a while. They still spark joy 😊
Agreed the FN paper is not the most fountain pen friendly. I still use my fountain pens in them, accepting the inevitable feathering and bleeding - ‘character’ :) Any recommendations on FN-sized Japanese paper notebooks?
4:25 What do you mean by that? Fabriano is a small town in italy that has been producing paper products since 13th century. You could've just searched on google and checked the sources instead of being arrogant
That was the most intense notebook review I’ve ever seen. This was like a confession to a dirty fetish for paper.
I feel strongly about this :D Thanks for watching!
made me lol
Papyrophiliac 😂
😂😂😂😂 that made me laugh hard! On point!

Great video. I’m currently using a dot grid Field Notes as my Bullet Journal. I usually carry a Moleskine pocket size, but I’m really enjoying the Field Notes.
Thanks for watching!
Yes! The grid seems right. How do you handle searching for something specific in all 91 field notes?
It’s a slow process, but it’s part of the fun, I like the fact that I have to go through and interact with many old notebooks to find something. It’s the difficult way, but the more fun way!
Bought my first Field Notes cache after watching this video. I didn’t really get it before. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy!
Great explanation of why Field Notes are so special.
One of my favourites is the oversized Field Notes Pitch Black Set of 2
(3-1/2" × 5-1/2" = 89mm × 140mm), not to be confused with the
regular sized set of 3.
I used a ruled one at a conference this year - it fits into my
jacket pocket and the extra space over the standard version proved very useful.
Ha! Nice - sono da Malta pero capisco Italiano. Grazie per aver guardato il mio video!
Dot grid all the way! Thanks for watching!
I've bought FN from them while in Europe.
at this point with so many 'better' alternatives, its crazy how people still rave over them
Theyre super cheap here in Chicago.
Ive even found them
In a vending machine before.
Lucky! I’d love to visit the HQ
This guy gets me, I get this guy. I’ve used lots of pocket books but once I used field notes the first time I could never go back.
Never!
I was first introduced to Field Notes in 2015 and I have carried one with me every day since then
They are the best! And what a great habit. Thanks for watching!
Well said! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Fellow semi-malteser here considering starting my field notes. Subbed 🤘🤘
Nice! Thanks for watching!
One trick i do is, if you cant find good notebooks, Just get the best paper you can find and make the notebooks by yourself
What a great video. You’ve piqued me curiosity! On my way to browse online. 😊
Enjoy, I hope you find some new notebooks! And thanks for watching!
@@BlankFirstPage , I can’t wait! I placed an order for a Pitch Black Notebook (ruled paper 2-pack). 😊
Great choice! The pitch black are some of my favourites!
Nice! That’s good wear on a field notes if the cover falls off! Do you have specific uses for the 2 that you carry together?
Bro!! Did that say Södertälje as in Södertälje, Sweden???
Yep!
Whats the huge books with deckled edges in the back? Looks cool
It’s a big ole notebook that’s made from hand-made cotton paper (?). It’s extremely satisfying to the touch, but I still don’t know what to use it for.
@@BlankFirstPage that is so cool even just as an artefact📖
I have to know what that giant black book is on your shelf to your left (my right) under all the smaller ones. The paper edge looks incredible, and I'm so distracted. SHOW ME THAT BOOK!
Check out my latest video - my collection part 2, I spend some time on it there :) Thanks for watching!
Are those Kokuyo sketchbooks I see behind you? Would love a review of them.
You have a very good eye, Sir. I have a video planned for exactly that, stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
@@BlankFirstPage looking forward to it.
So true. I like the quick turnover with smaller notebooks too.
That's pretty interesting that something as mundane and unassuming as a notebook/journal can be designed and marketed in such a way that it is turned into a collectible item
It is indeed!
Interesting; your use of Field Notes as a coaster! 😂 Loved you vid Lukas. Aldo.
I had written that coaster note before I heard your comment about it! 😮
Haha! Thanks for watching Aldo
How did the comparison test go? Sounds like your working conditions would make for a good set of rugged notebook tests!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you.
Hi! Thanks for watching. I've used Escribo.pl before and they ship all across Europe. They're based in Poland and also have good service!
Thank you.
love pocket notebooks but roll with Moleskine Caheir since they don't have staples.
Makes complete sense!
Holy crap the random mention of Townes Van Zandt caught me way off guard, one of my favorites for sure ‿̈
All time favourite!
What notebook is underneath the field notes you were showcasing? The wide book with all the columns.
It’s an old accounting ledger I got from my grandmother from when they had a shop. It is probably from the 50s or 60s!
@@BlankFirstPage Thank you. I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying it.
Thank you for watching!
whats the name of that large notebook?
The blue one behind me? It’s a Lamali Paris
agree with the hate of lines (too rigid, bad for sketching), love of dots and grid, disagree with not liking blanks.
I’m sure I’d like blanks better if I had any talent for sketching or drawing!
I love simplicity and EDC. Have you used the pokka pens yourself? What’s the writing like?
Do you have a video showing what you use the FNs books for exactly?
Not specifically, but it’s in the works! I’ve got a few videos where I show my current field notes and talk a bit about what’s gone into them that month.
Thanks for watching!
Have you seen the price of these things!
I'm Brazilian and I also have an obsession with notebooks🇧🇷📚
Thanks for watching!
A man who speaks my language 😉
Thanks for watching!
Not a fan of the cover tearing at the spine over time. I’ve had to reinforce the binding with duct tape on one of them
It’s very true they can definitely tear. I think I’ve had one or two where the cover has come off completely, and I’ve had to use tape to secure and reinforce it. But I’m typically moving on to a new one after one or two months and it’s usually not enough time for that much wear to occur on mine.
I got to check out those Field Notes Notebooks
They are great.
Bought my first Field Notes three pack today. Yeah. I'm a convert now. Having said that, Fabriano isn't bad. Field Notes is far superior, though.
Nice! Welcome to the FN club. Thanks for watching!
@@BlankFirstPage A pleasure, to be sure. I'll be watching more videos, also for sure.
Spännande video.
Danke!
Just got the full national park set, and I'm am trying to decide what to do with them- they are so pretty I don't want to use them.
Definitely use them! They age really nicely.
I was looking for field notes but are so expensive here (Chile) that I decide to use the kilos of paper in my house and made my own.
Excellent idea!
Mai provato i notes di Midori ? Carta superlativa
Sounds like Malta is a stationery desert 😅
Perfect description!
@@BlankFirstPage Thanks for adding me on Instagram 😄
I, too, fell in love with FN a few yearsss back so I totally get it. It made me fell back into the "planning/journaling habit". But then I fell into the fountain pen rabbit hole and found myself in an excruciating decision to steer away from it 🙊🙈🙉 the paper quality isn't just meeting my needs. So I moved on to higher quality japanese paper 😍
These days, I use the FN sized ntbks but with fountain pen friendly paper.
I still use my fountain pens in them, accepting the inevitable feathering and bleeding - ‘character’ :)
Any recommendations on FN-sized Japanese paper notebooks?
take a shot every time he says field notes

You can accomplish the same thing with a field craft note pad which you can grab for $1 each . They are so overpriced
As an actual writer, I can understand the need for these. But I cannot understand collecting something for grocery lists.
The beauty of the ordinary!
