  • Celia Umenza is a high-ranking leader of the largest Indigenous group in Colombia, the Nasa.
The Nasa is an unarmed civilian defence force that has been standing up to armed groups to defend and preserve their land in war-torn Indigenous territories for generations.
The strategy of training unarmed activists has been so successful that leaders of the Indigenous guard have trained peasant and Afro communities to form their own defence forces.
Celia was one of the first women to participate and later became the coordinator of the guards. Today she is the leader of the women's association within the movement and lives with constant threats to her life.
"Just as I chose the organisation with my partner, I chose the organisation for my son. I said that I'll leave them a free world." said Celia.
Colombia is the deadliest place in the world for land and environmental defenders, and the Cauca region in the southwest parts of the country bears a disproportional share of the violence.
One Indigenous land defender has been killed every three days since 2016, while Indigenous communities are on the frontline against armed groups, multinational corporations, cartels and the Colombian state.
The killings aim to silence the land defenders in their fight against catastrophic climate change. Latin America is the world’s most unequal region: the largest one percent of landholdings concentrates more productive land than the other 99 percent. And Colombia is the most unequal country in the region.
The Indigenous Nasa see the struggle in historical terms. To them, the Spaniards never fully conquered the Indigenous populations of the Americas, despite massive historical campaigns of extermination, disease and exploitation. Not because the colonisers showed mercy - but rather because Indigenous resistance was too resilient.
"One of the Indigenous movement’s slogans is 'If they kill one of us, thousands will rise'," Celia says.
The ongoing Nasa rebellion in the mountains of southwestern Colombia is only a recent battle in an episodic colonial war that began 528 years ago when Columbus set foot on the continent.
This post-colonial struggle is also a clash between two world views. One believes in the protection of Mother Earth and the other is only interested in extracting as much profit as possible - regardless of the impact on people and environment.
Filmmakers Jesper Klemedsson and Sebastian Pena Rojas from the documentary collective Recapto have been following Celia and the Colombian Indigenous movement since 2018.

Thanks aljazeera for this insight on the struggle of our indigenous people. It's so frustrating as a Colombian to hear almost everyday of a social leader killed, and way more frustrating that the media only focus on the violence against them, and not on the cause of these conflicts. The media is unwilling to talk about inequality in rural areas, and the problem of land distribution and lack of governmental participation in these areas.

Indigenous people revere the land. They care for it and truly believe the earth is their mother provider. They are focused on land fertility. A place to be shared with fauna and vegetation without dominion over either one. But collaboration. ☘️

They are sending warnings to the army, but that's it. Nobody will truly defend the indigenous as they pose as an obstruction for companies who explode the land, guerrillas who invade and recruit children to fight for their idiotic ideals, paramilitaries who massacre those they don't trust, and even the government, as the last suffers from lots of corruption and puts the army or the police to suppress these groups.
The UN is truly a tool for the US to invade strategic places and not an institution capable of defending and, most importantly, protecting human rights.

@MrZapparin yes. But when you see the faces of these people, you will realize of something. In most of Latin American countries, you will observe those who were mixed with indoamericans, as afro descendants, are poor.
While on the other hand, those who looks europeans, are middle class and rich.

    • @AndresNostos
      @AndresNostos 4 года назад +2

I don't agree with you. Of course indigenous people, and afro communities get the worst of the violence in Colombia. But as a Colombian İ tell you that the problem is bigger than that. Lack of governmental interest in rural communities, corruption, inequality in land distribution, lack of infraestructure, etc., Are to blame.

Colombia doubles the size of France, and its way too culturally diverse.
These things happen because the state and government is unable, sometimes unwilling, to reach all of its territory. Our infrastructure outside the cities and main Departments is something completely different, it's way too crappy. Even helicopters can't fly over certain areas because of the complex geography.
And when there's nobody to defend the rights of the people, the only governments are those who take control, be it guerrillas, paramilitaries or narcotrafic groups that are in constant war to manage these territories and plant coca. While the indigenous or peasants are in the middle of it all, they just pose as an obstacle for these terrorists to do whatever they want.

Great documentary! Question for the more experienced, isn't it a tactical error to engage the government at home? That is when a killing of an indigenous guard occurs, if a hotel in Bogata exploded, that would be fighting on the government's turf.

@@pdurusau Colombia is in a real crisis that it isn't only affecting the indigenous communities but the whole population. The government is scared if we rebel against them. They always manipulates us with the same false speech of guerrillas' plans taking control over the country. But most of us, we don't fall for it and that's why they are so scared that they want to kill all enemy. Indigenous people are one of the most affected in this stupid war and they don't not hold this anymore. And many of our generation neither. If we never fight back we would never have a future for us and our new generations. We have to defend our privileges and rights from criminal groups, corrupted government and countries from outside too. It is something that people from first world countries will never understand.

I often wonder what is unclear about my writing. I suggested that "fighting on the government's turf," that is fighting where they are most sensitive, is to be preferred over fighting on your home grounds. Think of it as America fighting in Europe, versus fighting in America. Who's homeland gets destroyed? Now, apply that to your situation. It's a question of tactics and not local knowledge.
