I grew up with the Jimmy Jones version but Del Shannon is the one (and possibly only) singer whose singing can be as pleasing....one of the truly, truly great singers...
Del was treasured in the UK in the sixties and his records will live on as long as this planet has music. This is a wonderful rendition of the original, thank you for providing this masterpiece of a truly great artist.
As a teenager in the 60s I loved Del Shannon, Bobby Vee and all the rest. Never thought RUclips could bring back such wonderful memories of good days. Now I´m stuck on RUclips just watching videos of songs that were part of my growing up. Thanks.
Y-Tube has gone where Kidd Video hasn't gone!!! Someone asked on one of my comments on another video channel. What does Kidd Video have to do with it? I replied, He hasn't ventured into this particular time period but Y-Tube has. Of, course Kidd Video was from the 80's.
you've got company, KayJuli, I'm almost embarrassed at how much time I stare at these wonderful memories and recall being a moody adolescent trying to make sense of life which made no sense and getting spiritual support from my music.
This is so great to see,his version is the best with lots of go,I still have a crush on you Del, ever since -63 when I first discovered you and got my first record of you, oh youth where did you go? I´ll always love you, caro
i was quite cheeky really wanting to meet him every time i saw him, first time was in 1970 at a small club in birmingham,he was supposed to appear at 12 midnight but turned up onstage at 1 am....i remember followng him up to the rest area where i bought him a drink,we discussed his music and life, signed all my albums (that i had taken with me) yes he was a really down to earth type of person and was always willing to spend time with his fans,i met him several times up till 1984.....
Del was such a good artist, i remember listening to his music with my farther and it brings back such good memories, you don't get music with feeling like this now. i wish i was watching this with my dad.
believe me i have just heard james taylors lacklustre boring version on the radio whilst on vacation . You have restored faith in me keep rockin wi DEL
You and coyotesong express my sentiments exactly. Nothing makes it seem more like it did at the time than watching this stuff on youtube. Watching this recreates perfectly the feeling for me of it being 1965 all over again. Del holds up pretty well, doesn't he?
i think you will find that clip is from the film 'Malibu Beach Party' regarding the comment by IBIDU 2,i saw del shannon in Birmingham UK, there he topped the bill because Ricky Nelson Had Died in a aircrash,Bo Diddley came on and played then Del came on sang and played,Bo Diddleys playing was soon forgotten!!!!
@68enxy Thanks for the info i saw Del in Leicester my friend was on bass for him with his band they later became Deisel park west amd had a few lower placed hits
@websearch333 Its one regret i have had not to meet the guy . I saw him on three occasions . The last one was at a pub in Goole of all places .By then he was carrying a bit of weight and wearing his cowboy hat ,ha! Although the venue was was not to grand ,the performance he gave to a select few of fans was brilliant he nailed every number
@coyotesong Guess what, I'm the same 64. And the kids to day do know what a 45 is . And they also know all about this kind of music. Some one just has to play it for them. They get it, believe me. And they love it !!!!!!!
Yeah, Del had been having some financial and other problems and the strain was too much for him. He had been set to replace Roy Orbison with the Traveling Wilburys. He had an unequaled talent for expressing emotional tension in his music. I'm glad I got to see him perform live in a small club back in the 1980s -- he was in great voice and did all of his hits, even more forgotten ones like "Stranger In Town."
i do some live music and karaoke with friend..only sing 3 shannon songs though....BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN,BROKEN PROMISES AND SWISS MAID...THE REST ARE TOO HIGH FOR ME!!! LOL
norbellini, thanks again for posting this wonderful footage of Del! Where did the footage originally come from? It wasn't by any remote chance the show that Lee Alan produced and was hoping to go national with, was it?
@212729h Thanks for your info. I'm guessing though that I'm older than you are. Not that it matters. Just celebrated 6-4. That;s a long way from being 14 when i bought Runaway as a 45 of course. Do kids today even know what a 45 is????
And I only discovered half an hour ago that he committed suicide. Couldn´t help crying a little because it was like he just died and so has part of my youth.
If Jackie DeShannon married Del, she'd be Jackie DeShannon Shannon, If Carol Channing married him, she'd be Carol Channing Shannon, and if Diane Cannon married Del, she'd be Diane Cannon Shannon!! Del was the BEST!!!

To my mind, this song should have been his -
he should have had the major hit, he was a revolutionary artiste.
One of my favorite songs, but by Jimmy Jones
Del was such a good artist, i remember listening to his music with my farther and it brings back such good memories, you don't get music with feeling like this now. i wish i was watching this with my dad.
So under rated but one of the best.
i have been trying to work out whether iprefer del shannon or jimmy jones singing this but they are both good in their own way
I'd say this was Where The Action Is in the mid 1960s.
believe me i have just heard james taylors lacklustre boring version on the radio whilst on vacation . You have restored faith in me keep rockin wi DEL

Beautiful footage and performance by Del...I have the recording on an album of his greatest hits...
I had a crush on him he was just so cute and so wonderful , we all miss him.

Sorry Jimmy Jones and James Taylor, but Del definitely has the upper hand with this song.
@coyotesong Guess what, I'm the same 64. And the kids to day do know what a 45 is . And they also know all about this kind of music. Some one just has to play it for them. They get it, believe me. And they love it !!!!!!!

Agree..ery difficult to top Jimmy Jones versuion...James Taylor was smart to do a different version
i do some live music and karaoke with friend..only sing 3 shannon songs though....BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN,BROKEN PROMISES AND SWISS MAID...THE REST ARE TOO HIGH FOR ME!!! LOL
I like both, but I prefer Del's version of this song to Jimmy Jones. A little more hard driving or something.
norbellini, thanks again for posting this wonderful footage of Del! Where did the footage originally come from? It wasn't by any remote chance the show that Lee Alan produced and was hoping to go national with, was it?
fish and chips, salt and vinegar 1960s DEL SHANNON "suits you sir"
If Tuesday Weld had married Hal March, JR., she'd be Tuesday March the Second.
Where and when was this??? Anybody???? It's the same show from which there's a vid of Del doing Little Town Flirt.
better than Jimmy jones!!
