- Before the jetties were built at the entrance to Newport Harbor, the surf in front of Corona Del Mar was pretty good. The area was known as the "Waikiki of the west coast". The Balboa side jetty was built using a railroad to bring in rocks from inland, and is under construction when this film was made. The CDM side jetty was constructed a few years later using rocks barged over from Catalina Island.
I got my first surfboard in 1962 and i thought that was a long time ago! Very cool historic video of southern California surfing.
watching this video makes me wanna cry! another GREAT California wave destroyed for financial gain... now all we can do is dream of how fine it was... thanks for posting Raymond! a classic video!
Great find, thanks! Was Pete Peterson’s era and bet he used to surf here. Love the feel of how surfing was then when things were more spacious and everyone moved lots slower. No need shred a wave to bits.
LOVE THE MUSIC AND MEMORIES! FIRST BODY SURFED BEACH COMING TO CALIFORNIA AT 12 YEARS OLD! WOW. IT WAS SOO SMOOTH.
Wow! Astounding film that makes me really want to turn back the clock and jump into the picture. The music's great too.
Wow, this is historical fascinating. I've never seen any pre-1950s surf videos before. So cool to see beach life/culture was alive and well back then. Guys sliding on the algae, doing back flips, body surfing, surfing...all trying to impress chicks 😂 you gotta love it. Great post, thank you for sharing.
The Wedge jetty in this video is being "rebuilt" with more rock since the original jetty started in 1917 sank too low to be effective. That wave isn't gone, it still goes off on south swells, breaks well overhead down the west jetty... we've surfed outriggers on it all the way in to Little Corona.
great footage!
PEOPLE WHO LIVED THERE WERE SOO VERY LUCKY!
Very interesting. Thank you
the Edge, pre-Wedge
This is amazing! I recognize the rocks... some things never change. Wonderful sets before the jetties. Fun to see the original Chinese house in China Cove.
A bygone era brings joy to my old surfers heart...to think many of these folks wound up in WWII...hope they were all having fun considering what was to come 4 years later...
Having grown up in Newport and surfed CDM big, this video brings a tear to my eye. What a perfect, fun wave, although wide. I wonder what it was like on huge swells.
great video thanks for posting !
awesome grew up there what a great time it was CDM class of 83
sweet vid, thanks for sharing.
How, may I ask, did you come upon these videos? Absolutely fascinating. The scenes from above Big Corona showing the jetty under construction, the China house and the un-built condition of Corona del Mar are classics. Thanks, Walkie Ray
Classic. Thanks for posting. And kiddies, notice how those surfers cling to their - presumably finless - boards like clams? No leggies in them days - try it sometime. cheers
Very cool vid! Those surfers really had their hands full with those massive boards, huh?
2:13 note the swimmers paying close attention to the surfer riding on the Corona side of the jetty. These boards weighed 75 pounds and had no leashes, so when they washed in to the beach, they were potentially lethal to any swimmer in their way.
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing!
*Amazing!*
Hey Paul, look at all those great lefts. Where did you find this. Thanks for sharing. Miss you Cuz.
Cool , a natural wave machine.
My dad surfed there we grew up across the street 1967 or so
Classic. I heard it could get huge.
Just was feed this from RUclips. Awsome edit and music. Thanks for posting. Do you know shot the original footage?
Ben Gravy and JOB surfed there.
😮
What is the tune, and who is the band?
those were the old redwood heavy boards?
Yes.
I need a time machine
And all of the sudden Daryl had more chicks than he knew what to do with. And California surfing was born.
Boards. Need fins.
BEFORE MY TIME OF COURSE ;p
more like 1958 not 1938
Sorry but you're Wrong. The Harbor Jetty between big corona and wedge was completed in the 30's. This shows in the footage it is still incomplete and only the cement wall was constructed. so definitely 1938.
@@perrybrown32322 You know what, after a second view, I recant. Your information about the jetty gave me some new information. Thank you. Truth be told, I made my comment based on the swimwear worn by the women at 2:18 more than anything else. They were pushing the edge in 1938. But the woman watering the grass(?) later is clearly 1930s.
Thanks, Perry!
Cool video but what a terrible choice of music. Don't get me wrong I luv Latin music especially Latin guitar but a little Dick Dale would have done just fine..
*Agreed, had to mute it halfway through.*
*Maybe if it was time sensitive; 1938 MexiCali*
Did you hear?... Al Gore invented Surfing
