Putting it pretty low on the heat scale for sauces. And after the testing was done, Ed responded by saying that was intentional. It's not possible by the way. If it's 91% pepper x mash, and pepper x is truly the hottest pepper in the world, then there is no way for it to only be 69k SHU. And Ed accepted that it was.
I'd love to hear Ed talk some more about the medicinal side of his business--he mentions that he was trying to breed hotter peppers for medical use early on, but it got glossed over. Also how he got started, education and training-wise. I feel like there's a lot of inspiration there for young people interested in agricultural genetics and medicinal horticulture.
Right? It would be great to hear Ed talk that side of the business and his heart behind it. It sounds like he still has that desire to create some sort of medicinally useful pepper, but then when the peppers he’s made don’t quite fit the bill, he can’t get himself to just abandon that pepper and move on to the next, which in itself was an interesting detail. He’s like a, pepper completionist, despite his calling to find THE pepper.

As someone who has also struggled with addiction the fact that a lot of people who like this stuff, including Ed himself, have a similar story makes a lot of sense. I never put together my fascination with pushing things to the extreme and with mind altering substances and my fascination with ultra spicy food but the parallels are absolutely there.
This is one of the, if not the, best production First We Feast has put out yet. What a great story and Ed and his wife are amazing people. Thank you for this!

The one thing I love about this eps is when ed told us on why he started the whole chilli business because of a girl that didn't want to talk to him and made a salsa sauce for her and created the foundation for his passion for chilli peppers. Plus also got the girl and became his wife. Has a wonderful family and story is the most sweetest thing ever

Smoking Ed is in recovery. He was not joking about peppers being dope to him and getting him high. He really does use them as a replacement for unhealthier substances.
It really is amazing what a high it gives you. The first time I opened a bottle of Apollo and took that first taste, after the pain subsided, I was euphoric. As I get older, the next morning becomes more painful if you catch my drift. Didn't know why my stomach was torn up and cramping, and forgot I'd added a reaper to my bowl of tomato soup the night before.
I'd love to just spend a day with Ed and observe him while participating in EVERYTHING he does. Seems like such a goofy and genuine guy. Great video! Informational, silly and great camera shots.
I think it’s really cool that Ed battled addiction, BEAT IT, and now has this amazing operation where he works with something that he is 100% passionate about and brings so many people joy. That’s a true role model right there 👍
I used to work at a wholesale rose grower and hybridizer. One of the most well-known Rose hybridizers would give us the crosses he wanted every spring. About 4 of us would hand pollinate about 50,000 flowers to produce around 250,000 seeds, which we hand planted and inch by an inch apart. After a thorough 8 to 10 year evaluation period only about 4 to 5 varieties made it to market. So yes it takes a long time to make new plants.

Seeing Smokin’ Ed and his passion for hot peppers has urged me to begin growing peppers myself, currently trying Cayenne, Carolina Reaper, Ghost Pepper and Habanero’s. I can understand why he enjoys being with his peppers because when you grow something, it becomes part of your life.
I love my greenhouse and just the whole process of growing things. I like cucumbers, peppers, watermelons, and pumpkins are my favorite to grow but this coming up year I'm getting into mushrooms and its so fun to learn. I'm always learning something new.
The fact that yall over at FWF / Hot Ones really bonded with Ed and made this collaboration effort happen so early on is such a proof of passion to me.

Ed has talked about recovering from addiction. It just goes to show that addicts need something in their lives that they can set to 11 and throw themselves completely into! Without his addict streak we wouldn't have any of his devotion to these amazing chillies. The way he talks about the dopamine rush from these hot chillis is hilarious.. he's still chasing that fix! What a lovely generous guy. Best of luck to anyone suffering from addiction - I hope you find your passion and the meaning in your own life. I was there too.
Ed seems like such a wholesome genuine person , loves what he does and enthusiastically shares his hobby/job with others , I grew my first peppers this year because of Ed , Washington climate not the best but I am excited to see where I can go with it. Going to do another grow next year then try to cross a couple myself , peppers are Soo much fun the heat and the journey to fruit. Have a hot day , gonna use some of the Gator mash for lunch

Troy Primeaux spent 8 years breeding and stabilizing that pepper so Ed could steal and market it as his own. Pretty shady.

@section8usmc53 Ed gave 5 different stories of how he got the pepper. He can't even keep up with his own lies. It's been well known for years that he stole it from Troy. Well known in the pepper community anyway.

Ed has talked about recovering from addiction. It just goes to show that addicts need something in their lives that they can set to 11 and throw themselves completely into!
Without his addict streak we wouldn't have any of his devotion to these amazing chillies. The way he talks about the dopamine rush from these hot chillis is hilarious.. he's still chasing that fix!

Ed seems like such a wholesome genuine person , loves what he does and enthusiastically shares his hobby/job with others , I grew my first peppers this year because of Ed , Washington climate not the best but I am excited to see where I can go with it. Going to do another grow next year then try to cross a couple myself , peppers are Soo much fun the heat and the journey to fruit.
