@@daniellewoolley8607 That's my plan if I ever get stalked by a mountain lion. Carry suitably sized cardboard box to distract it with, any time I go beyond the suburbs.
Even human kids enjoy playing with boxes! One of my fond childhood memories was the family visiting Grandpa and Grandma for Christmas. They had recently purchased a new refrigerator and stored its enormous cardbox box in the basement. We asked to be allowed to build the box into a castle, so Grandma handed us some steak knives and we got to work. Us kids had windows cut out, built a drawbridge, and worked out a system of rotating passwords, and nobody lost an eye. 😊
Every time i get a box from Amazon, my cat Ace is ready to claim it, before it's been opened and emptied. He also likes to lay on top of large unopened boxes. 🐈⬛
When we were kids, Mittens kept knocking our racing slot cars off the track. We put her in a box beside the rack to stop this, she put her head thru the top air hole and a paw thru the side air hole and continued to knock the cars off. This became an obstacle course and made it even more fun!
I think many of these factors explain why they like high places. They're safe from ground-bound predators, and are also not noticed by their ground-bound prey, until they pounce from above.

This is very informative and well-done in explaining the various reasons why cats seem attracted to boxes. Reasons 1 and 2 seem essentially the same, but the other explanations are also interesting and make good sense.
What about the smell?! Cats sniff all over the box. They jump inside to better sniff every corner. Why? They reject cute, expensive, cozy-looking cat beds *because they don’t smell like a box* . Cardboard is made from wood pulp. Wood is wood: natural, outdoors, growing and near the ground, decaying. That must have something to do with their choice. A cat in a box is a nose pretending she’s outdoors hidden in the bushes with woodsy smell all around her. Along with the rest of what you said. And manufacturers might get cats to love their cat beds if they packed them in shredded cardboard.
Wild cats (our cats' ancestors) sleep in burrows in the ground (originally dug by badgers, rabbits, or other such animals) or in holes in tree trunks. They are safe in tight spaces, where wolves or bears can't get at them. This is why they usually prefer boxes that are only just large enough for them to squeeze in: it's the survival instinct nurtured over millions of years.
There is a box in my house with a cat in it. I'm afraid to look, because I know the second I look, it will disappear to a parallel universe. But I know it's there.
My tortie cat is obsessed with cardboard boxes. Whenever she sees one she immediately jumps inside and starts scratching it like crazy for a good while until she is spent , like she is possessed or something, and then exits it. Which is good because then she doesn't scratch the furniture!
When I was a kid, I and occasionally a friend could play for hours with a box big enough to climb in. For decades, my wife and I have had cats. I used to tape boxes together and cut peep holes and passage ways from one box to another. Our boys loved these free jungle gyms I made for them and we laughed and were entertained for hours watching their hilarious antics. Great memories and good mental health for us and our puddies.

My Misty loves boxes & packaging I get a parcel & she's there straight away, boxes piled high is a play toy for hours even tho she has a multi level tower
Our two cats loved boxes and bags. I took 25-30 or so boxes and made what my wife called the "Kitty Condo". Taped it all together with holes like a maze. We ended up with a 3rd cat when I left our sliding glass door open for the two cats to come and go on a nice weekend. Our male cat brought in a 2nd girlfriend. Fun video. I really enjoyed all the information and all the cats.
I so miss my cat, Boo Boo (white, male, flame point). ** He would stuff himself in boxes half his size. ** As a kitty, he laid down in a small, crock, clay bowl. He looked like he was in a "fetal position." He would go NUTS at Handle Holes in boxes if I stuck my hand in, and I would make a QUICK WITHDRAWL. A front leg with claws extended would fly out & spin around (like a propeller) and try to Seriously Grab & Dig into something. In fact, if I sat a box down, act surprised, and told him to jump into the box, he would on command.
So it seems that just putting a towel or a piece of clothing on my bed is a way for my cat to feel cozy when she sits on it. It's not like there's the rest of the ged to sit on! 😺
Cats like places where they can observe their surroundings without being seen. When I had a cat I made climbing poles to the top of the bookshelf where it had a wooden box with a pillow. It also liked to be the centre of attention so I made a bed for it on top of the TV.
I recently received a delivery in a very tiny box. While going through my purchase ,I placed the box on the floor and my cat proceeded to sit in it and looked straight at me like, “why did you get me a box too small?” It was very funny. Her butt fit but nothing else. 😂
As a lifelong cat owner, our furry friends like boxes because of their natural "den instinct", to find a small, private "den" in which they can relax and take their catnaps and feel safe & secure.
I'm surprised that you didn't say anything about box biting, even though you showed some. One of my cats went through umpteen boxes during her lifetime. She'd sit inside and gradually work her way around the rim, biting and spitting out the pieces. I called them her "ptooey" boxes. Never figured out why she did it when none of the others did.

Newspapers or magazines. I always found if I was reading a newspaper or magazine and I dropped it on the floor while sitting some ware my cat would quite often sit on it.
Often I'm amazing about these videos. All of this knowledge has been known for well over 50 to 100 years. Are parents just passing this info onto their kids anymore?! Science is just gathered exploration and validation.
Mother had a big tomcat. He loved to rough house with me. She had a barstool that he would get under , and act like he was hidden. He would pounce out to attack me , then run back under the bar stool. Mother thought I was hurting him , then she realized he needed that stimulation. She said when I'd leave , he would cry at the door. Anyway it would tickle me seeing him run under the barstool, and act all big like he was totally protected , then run out to attack. 😂😅.
Pretty sure that pheromones are involved. Reason: Nothing piques their interest more than a brown corrugated cardboard box. It definitely is to do with the material as well.

We have 3 to 5 cats in house. They will sleep in them for awhile and then abandoned them. We have chewy boxes with old clothes all over the place. They prefer the small ones. I also have 11 cats outside. They have 100.00 houses. We're in Florida but they still enjoy the boxes. I use steaw in them.
Ok. I can agree with you on much of what you said, BUT... you can put tape on the floor in a square and they will sit in it. That is just crazy, but it works.
The first cat I met who doesn’t like boxs was my neighbor cat when he came to visit I purposely saved a box for him he wanted nothing to do with it and the stray I’m trying to rescue was afraid of the box and want even tempted by food in the box
My precious cat with IBD died due to the stress from my introducing a dog into the household. Please remember this warning before you also get a dog. I miss my cat so much and her death was my fault.
Their cousins like wild cats and more distant cousins, like a cougar, lion, puma, etc. usually choose a cave, burrow to sleep, or behind a rock, or a fallen tree or at least a dense bush to hide… or tree branch if it can climb on it. I think earlier they were not an apex predator so they were not just hunter but preys of the current apex predator. In the city also there are lots of danger to the cats.
~ 4:25 -> It might be noted that a cat's flesh is not like ours but has greater nerve tissue % and less fat: muscle ratio. This makes them very sensitive to cold. If we were composed like them, we'd be highly sensitive [to cold e.g.,] and as quick as any athlete can be. This is (of course) just my opinion, but I'll bet that I am correct!
My kitty son Oreo can be in another room and I will scratch the bottom of one of his boxes and he comes running to see what is going on with his boxes.😂😅🤣 He then gets in one of the boxes....🤔 My son loves his boxes.... EBW USN Ret SERVANT OF GOD
yeh virtual boundaries are hilarious, you can absolutely guarantee that my cat will without any doubt sit right in the middle of anything you have going on anywhere on the floor, be it a piece of a4 or a broadsheet newspaper, as long as its flat and as long as she knows you need to use/read it there will be a fluffy arse sat in the middle of it.

Newspapers or magazines. I always found if I was reading a newspaper or magazine and I dropped it on the floor while sitting some ware my cat would quite often sit on it.
HILARIOUS!! I NOW KNOW WHAT TO GET 3 CAT PEOPLE FOR CHRISTMAS!!😂
I leave a box for my cats in the kitchen.i quite often see them just sitting in it! ❤
Who can blame cats for loving boxes?
I see what you did there.
I just love cats❤️🐈🐈❤️
What wbout paper bags?
Same concept! 😺
I've tried making my cat's resting places more comfortable with blankets and cushions. He hates it, he wants bare-bones with no comfort.
Pretty sure that pheromones are involved. Reason: Nothing piques their interest more than a brown corrugated cardboard box. It definitely is to do with the material as well.
So cute 😊
I Have 3 Indoor Kitties 😻😻😻 Myself And Their Names Are Blizzard Rosie And Coco Kitty! All Three Of My Precious Little Kitties Love Playing In Boxes!!! I Love All Three Of My Precious Little Kitties To Bit's BIG-TIME!!!✝️✝️🛐🛐😇🌟🤗🙏🙏🙏🇨🇦🇬🇧🇮🇱♾️🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🗽🦅❤️❤️❤️‼️
I put wrapping paper in cardboard boxes, they love to sleep in them.
Awesome!
The first cat I met who doesn’t like boxs was my neighbor cat when he came to visit I purposely saved a box for him he wanted nothing to do with it and the stray I’m trying to rescue was afraid of the box and want even tempted by food in the box
Why do they bite and tear off pieces of boxes?
Very nice 🙂.
😻 ~ Love this Vid! Ty:)*
My precious cat with IBD died due to the stress from my introducing a dog into the household. Please remember this warning before you also get a dog. I miss my cat so much and her death was my fault.
Today I learned that a university In The Netherlands did a study in which they denied cats their boxes. Sad.
I get the box/hiding place thing. But the behaviour I don't get is the apparent unquenchable need to lay on a plastic or paper bag.
Was that DD and Lulu at the beginning?
Perhaps because boxes are made from NATURAL MATERIALS and most things in a modern day cat’s world is synthetic.
Normally I would agree, but I recently had a cat who avoided boxes like the plague - would not go in them, no matter how cute and tempting.
Also, boxes are the least expensive cat toy that you don't have to buy - and they work!
Absolutely! Cats don't need fancy toys to have fun. 😺
My kitty son Oreo can be in another room and I will scratch the bottom of one of his boxes and he comes running to see what is going on with his boxes.😂😅🤣 He then gets in one of the boxes....🤔 My son loves his boxes....

I don't have a cat. However, my carboard box is obsessed with them
I worked at a place that reconditioned cable top boxes, a lot of them were filled with cat hair
PAPER SHOPPING BAGS ARE GREAT FOR CATS & KITTENS, AS WELL...😁
yeh virtual boundaries are hilarious, you can absolutely guarantee that my cat will without any doubt sit right in the middle of anything you have going on anywhere on the floor, be it a piece of a4 or a broadsheet newspaper, as long as its flat and as long as she knows you need to use/read it there will be a fluffy arse sat in the middle of it.
Everytime I have a box i have to let my cats play in it.
