Studio 346 looked at every game ever made, meticulously catalogued all the little annoyances, and said on every one of them "we are going to do it better"
Nobody has ever made a game better than a mix of them. They’ve all had better sections than others and it’s always been like that. You don’t own this nor can play it either. Your opinions will vastly differ from everyone else’s. So it’s a bit wide of the mark to assume we will all agree. For eg, who has made a hand-held remote control like Derail Valley? Yep, no one and this doesn’t either. You can’t just go losing the hype. I’ve been gaming for 34 years on PC. I’ve played thousands and thousands of simulations. None of them fill every box because we’re all different
Thanks for putting out a DevLog update. The game customization is incredible and I really love the roundhouse customizations. I really look forward to seeing / hearing more about laying track. Thanks again for the DevLog update! ❤️
I'm probably not the first person with this idea to comment it, but I literally had to pause so I could get it out before I lost it. Something that could be really cool with the alt UI for switches would be to display an image representing the line the points lead to and other not-switched line(s). That image would of course update to display which line is switched and will rotate about the horizontal plane to follow you around like the rolling stock text in the UI, but the image will also rotate about the vertical plane in correspondence to where you are in relation to the switch so you can easily identify the not only where the tracks are lined to, but in what general direction they lead to.
I'm not even a third of the way through and the extra info button will make the game incredibly playable just by itself, but holy cow the little accessibility touch of being able to re-color lenses is an incredibly good decision. You want people, anyone at all, to be able to play, and it shows. Now I'm gonna finish watching keep up the stellar work! And don't worry too much about timing, people with lives make the game.
I honestly really appreciate the candid “yeah that would be cool but it’s out of our scope” stuff - so many games just promise everything and try and cram more and more in and it never gets done - so hearing you guys have a defined scope is very reassuring :))
Looking great! Love keeping the viewer clean and not cluttered with UI stuff. Makes for great screenshots. Really excited for this game! Keep up the great work guys!
for the Alt Menu, maybe having an arrow displaying which way a switch is thrown, laying on the tracks, for those that are not great remembering what the switch stands need to look like.
Literally the very first question I thought of as soon as I saw 'roundhouses' in the title of this devlog was 'Does the smoke exhaust correctly?' Y'all did not disappoint. Kudos
Hi Hyce/Mark this game looks amazing. I have an idea for your game, when you are servicing or you need to clean out the ash pan and fire box you clean it out and it makes a ash or dirt mound that you can get a shovel to move it or just empty it over a pit and leave it there and leave the mess for someone else. You and your team are doing an amazing job.
11:31 I was wondering why that roundhouse looked so familiar, growing up in the area I had always seen photos of the PCRY's SLO shops and it didn't click thats what that was until you mentioned it!
For the bounding box to spot the cars, it would be neat if there are natural embedded objects to indicate this as well / as an alternative - like wayside signs or flags, or even matching it to a loading platform.
It’s looking awesome. I hope there will be an option to choose a blanket or teddy bear or something for each locomotive so you can tuck them in safely and properly. 😊
I can't wait to finally have a modern steam simulator game. All the modern train sims focus mostly on modern railroading, and basically no (good) games exist that have narrow gauge. Mark and the team are definitely the best people to do it.
Happy 2025, I can't wait to try this game when it came out, Century Of Steam will definitely out beat Train Sim World and other train sim games with fake train physics.
The biggest annoyance that I have with railroad sims is the lack of support for flight sim peripherals. I've got all these assignable buttons/hats/axis' but to this point, no sim allows me to sync these up with different inputs in-sim. If you guys add peripheral support so I can take one of my throttle axis' and assign it to the throttle and one to the brake that'd be incredible. Hope you guys are able to figure that out, because this is the most excited I've been for a new sim in a looooooooooong time. Keep up the great work yinz, happy new year!
Of the boatload of of youtube channels I subscribe to, these CoS devlogs videos are what I singularly look forward to the most at the end of any giving month! ❤
once again so excited for this game to come out somewhere in the future! this is just what the railroading community needs. i was wondering if there would be a way to animate within the game. this could be a whole nother way for people to make movies, such as in trainz. the detail and possibility of movies would be very cool. a suggestion for making this more accessible is weather control, camera smoothing, a rewind button, and a manual derail button or a programmable action this probably is WAY out of the game's scope but I would just like to put this into your minds
Very nice. the point and click Turntable is a smart idea. I like the alt-mode, I would recommend adding options for what information is dispayed. also: Everytime I see a video, I can't help but think that this game has no right to look this beautiful, especially given how detailed the steam sim is. can't wait to try it!!
It could be a good way to show off locomotive presets. The 8-20D and 10-26D haven’t had their own videos yet and it could be a more efficient means of showing them off without needing a large dedicated devlog to them. Other rolling stock we haven’t seen much of could work as well.
@Stooltoad5017 This would be great for building hype when they get to right before release - have a short each day leading up to release for every class of engine.
Looking better and better, but at this stage the moire/flickering on the track is very noticeable; what options will be implemented in terms of AA and AF? Thx.
Just remembered... considering that the semaphores are from the Oahu Railway, I would like to see some Hawaiian 3-foot gauge represented. Engines such as "Ewa", "Maui", or even the "Anaka" and "Myrtle" from the LK&P 'Sugar Cane Train' would be a great fit for the game, as would period rolling stock. Also if you can represent any other locomotives from Florida's Orange Belt Railway it would be greatly appreciated.
Obligatory we won't know the locomotive list till the game releases. But just musing over things, in their original form as 0-4-0 saddle tanks when built in 1942 by Porter "Anaka" and "Myrtle" could fit with the game but not when they got rebuilt to tender locomotives. The LK&P wasn't formed till 1969, the end of the games time frame and didn't start operations until 1970 after the games time frame. A tourist operation like the LK&P doesn't really represent a true day in the life of a three foot narrow gauge crew anyhow. I like the line and I got a chance to ride behind the Myrtle a few times but the locmotives are outside of the scope of the game in their current form. The devs have said previously that due to the abhorrent working conditions and injustices on sugar and other plantations in the time the game is set in they will not be having any plantation equipment. Now obviously a lot of tank engine designs that saw use in Hawaii, like the Ewa or Maui, saw use in logging or mining in the mainland US so something tailored to those two applications would fit. Really the main Hawaiian representation would have to be with equipment from the Oahu Railway. Which of course had equipment that was similar to many mainland US examples. The Orange Belt Railway has one locomotive that you for sure will be able to make in game. In the Dev blog from March 2024 for Patrons or April for the general public they showed the Baldwin 8-18C 4-4-0 and one of the prototypes they showed was Orange Belt Railway number 7. Remember while there may be presents for some customization the goal will be for the player to create their railroads "look" as they wish. So you can at least create very close representations of Orange Belt Locomotives.
@@bluepoppy1026 Thanks for your confirmation. I am well aware that the LK&P existed just after the game's timeframe. The only saving grace to this rule is that in 1969, the Anaka was tested on the East Broad Top Railroad, equipment from which I am sure will be in the game... I am also aware of number 7 being able to be reproduced, but wonder if any other locomotive models owned by the Orange Belt will be present.
Also, love the detail that the pil burner and coal burner have different steam colors (oil burner is more blue while coal burner is more of an orangey off-white)
I love the modularity of the roundhouse, it's also amazing that it can work with the switches so effortlessly. I wish a certain other railroading game took some notes about different parts of the building toolbox fitting with one another. Also seeing that straight workshop at the end of the roundhouse is making me wonder whether we will be able to transition from a roundhouse into a wider straight building, or if the same modular builder will also include options for rectangular engine sheds. The turntable QoL is amazing, but I wish we also had a (not too slow) option to drag it to position manually. It's a nice bit of immersion. Also for the UI I like that it's not always visible since it is quite a lot. I'm not sure if the engine really needs to show its wheel arrangement since that's pretty obvious, but maybe having fuel/water levels displayed would help idendifying whether it's good to go. Still it's very nice getting the cargo info on demand instead of having to find the correct angle on each car to let it show.
My dream of building the narrow gauge Ma&Pa into the modern era (steam) will come true with a 30 stall roundhouse 😜 I am curious how modern the steamers will go, especially customization wise
Great game. Can't wait for it to come out. Very excited. However, I did notice a few things 1. At 8:28 the cut lever says "Name". 2. 12:23 Are we going to get wear and tear and/or replaceable parts if we don't like the look of the loco we customized when we bought it? 3. 17:20 are we going to have to "maintain" our fleet 4. Can you make a video that showcases or lists every map?
For you first point welcome to bug squashing in pre-alpha stage lol For your 2nd and 3rd points we've already answered both of those as "yes" in previous devlogs
another potential accessibility concern is to do with the hovering white info text. It's actually less readable than the text printed on the cars themselves in some of these cases because it's white text on light-blue and white sky. Having a black border, drop shadow effect, or an opaque background (like the waybill displays in Railroader) would help with this issue. Also, and this might be more to personal taste, but the extremely bright glowing white box around the destination track is kind of eye-strain inducing for me. It's like laser beams. IMO it should be much more subtle. I actually think I prefer Railroader's method of doing things where the destination track is just indicated by making the track itself light up.
just recently found this game, looks amazing, is there even a talk of when it might come out to play? it looks so much better than railroads online hate to buy that just to kill time til this comes out
Need some color coding on the alt-mode, like a black tag for engines, green for locations and red for loaded cars, yellow for unloaded cars. That kind of thing.
Im completely happen with how turntables and roundhouses are made in this game as its the one of the highlight things I enjoy out of train games is the style and controls they give and how to make it the way you want it. Clearly cant wait long enough for this gem of a game to come out.
That left alt mode is cool! Something that might be immersive is having like Derail Valley where you have the wagon contents or (maybe more realistically) the destination chalked on the side of the wagon, or having a UI waybill that can be bought up
Just wanting to know if you are able to edit roundhouses after the fact? I imagine at least one person is going to max out the number of locomotives spots but completely forget about adding a run-thru
So, how does the table and the round house connect to each other? Is it slap them down repeatedly and hope your track is eventually straight, or is there track already that one or the other sync connects to? That’s what I’m curious about… and if the table lock will eventually be animated instead of just a click sound when it stops? I ask since most turn tables have a piece that rolls out to lock it in place by sliding into the rails. I think the museum Hyce works at has this? And I think maybe they do in Carson City? I know they have a monster of a lock that’s physically hand bolted at the table in Cheyenne, since big steam like 4014 is a thing there. I love how much you guys go into the minor details with what you do, stuff everyone else overlooks entirely or just Nimrod slaps a universal look to regardless of reality… so, just curious if a table lock might be animated in the future. As far as the UI showing the box where a car can load or unload, maybe a box like that for the tender as well? Specifically, for where you need to aline the water spout or a coal chute / oil line connection? …and, admittedly, the sand dome would also be nice… Fingers crossed this year I can finally return to working, so can finally afford a Patreon here and membership over on your main channel, Hyce. Still a lot to sort out… but fingers crossed.
Hey Mark, I noticed in your video it seems like the drive rod on the main driver on the left side of the engine seem to have glitched through the shadow in the cab. During the intro of this video I think there was a glitch. Look back and see what I see. It's when you were in the driver seat. Looking at the brake stand before coming to a stop. I noticed it on the left. Just thought to let you know
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I'm sure many people watching these videos would spend their hard earned money on an early access. I know I definitely would.
I fear that it's getting too complex and detailed for the devs after time and becomes the kind of game that "never gets done". Don't get me wrong, details are important and essential for good games but it can get too much to develop in a reasonable time.
I'd say I need to see the loco coasting as it seems like its still "puffing" unlike what you see here in this video ruclips.net/video/d0qwSecaiyw/видео.htmlsi=6U-SQ9luuwH-hGkz&t=288 Where the loco is moving off regulator. I suppose throttling on slowing would allow steam to continue to "puff" but it doesn't sound right. The puffs should be longer and not all uniformed. On take up the "puff" would be more of a whoosh as it moves through the valves slowly and up through the blast pipe. I would consider seeing if you can adjust this otherwise all the hard work of modelling the steam process is great but it sounds very similar to all the other sims out there. Modulated sound instead of a file it runs at a certain point or beat unless I'm talking rubbish haha.
Remember, the locomotive in the video is an Baldwin 8-18C, with rather small cylinders. Since Mark still has the throttle wide open, and precedes to put the bar in the corner, it’s going bark rather loudly. The locomotive in the other video has significantly larger cylinders and (presumably) doesn’t have the throttle wide open. Hyce (the same person in the video) has a video about the Glenbrook fighting up a sharp grade at the Cumbres and Toltec railroad. Most of the video is about the trip as a whole, but there is a clip at 22:00 showing What these old Baldwins sound like at full power while moving slowly. The locomotive is a 2-6-0 with marginally larger cylinders, but they’re going to sound similar at the same speeds. STS: Glenbrook 1vs1 with Cumbres pass is the title of the video if you want to track it down yourself. I’d link it if I could, but can’t with the device I am using. Now the devlog isn’t set on a grade, but the loco is trying to pull through the train brake.
re: alt menu - use colors. Please use colors. Sure people will accuse you of "stealing" the idea of Railroader, but I have confidence that you can do it in a sufficiently different way that it isn't blatant plagiarism, but even so, it's genuinely a very good idea. WAY easier to pick out different colors in an ahead line of text boxes than it is to try and read all of them.
fr. If you're gonna do floating tags, you might as well. And I don't see the customizable track as an obstacle to this since all the industries are going to be pre-placed, and there won't seemingly be nearly as many per map as railroader? Could even have a lil fun w/ it and have a custom color scheme per map? idk. just spitballing
Honestly, I don't care if they steal it from Railroader: If they credit the game as inspiration, then that's all good for me. No need to reinvent the wheel.
@16:10 Ah yes, the Grand Cothon of the ES&DT, were the War Fairlies are stored awaiting a resurgence of the Right of Way Wars. Perhaps this time, with over 30 locomotives, one will reach the conflict without derailing.
I wonder how the optimization would be for lower end spec pcs to keep a solid 1080 60 at least, will there be a program of chunk base loader to help with that or just optimizing will be needed even if some foliage will have to be sacrificed, either way it’s all already well done and that can be fixed in major patches after release such as file shrinking
Make smoothing user-adjustable (via a slider?) with sensible default setting(s)? Some people may have some tremors that want a bit more smoothing and an FPS gamer with a setup that allows for highly reactive control (say, a mouse that reports position/movement 1000 times per second) might want less smoothing. That way both would get what they want without having to compromise, while Joe Average could be perfectly fine with the "normal" default setting and needs not touch anything ...
Do yall still take whistle recommendations? It’s probably an obvious one, but the Sierra No. 3 Chime used in the Polar Express movie. I of course don’t know the exact model and everything, but I’d love to be able to use that with the pere Marquette 1225, if that ever reaches the game.
I doubt they’ll have have a demo/early access. They’re very much a ‘it’s done when it’s done’ team when it comes to game development. I personally think it’s a good thing. As long as they can afford it, they will likely release the game when it is complete.
It was brought up in the last Q and A video. Essentially, the track in its current state can only be laid down on the dev side of things. The player currently can’t lay track.
To the President of Studio 346. Not trying to be rude here so please hear me out. I am trying, very hard, to watch this beautiful presentation of your exciting and beautifully crafted game on a very large tv. With that being said, when you pan and move the camera around so rapidly, it literally gives me motion sickness. It also makes it a lot more difficult to take in what you’re trying to show us. Please slow your camera movements down for those of us who aren’t watching on a mobile device. Many thanks for putting this together for us. I’m excited to see the finished product!! Happy gaming. 👍🏽👍🏽😎

Can you show us how the locomotive and rolling stock purchasing works next? That seems like it'd be pretty interesting
Also, love the detail that the pil burner and coal burner have different steam colors (oil burner is more blue while coal burner is more of an orangey off-white)
That sure looks like Washoe Valley, just east of Lake Tahoe.
This game is gonna be so freakin' badass!
By the gods the two click turntable controls are everything we’ve ever wanted in a train game.
I loved the cold open!
for alt mode please add a meue with enableable visual items i.e. check boxes for car info, spotting boxes, switches, etc.
EBT style shed would be fun
Shrink a big boy down to narrow gauge. Just a medium boy.
Great game. Can't wait for it to come out. Very excited. However, I did notice a few things
1. At 8:28 the cut lever says "Name".
2. 12:23 Are we going to get wear and tear and/or replaceable parts if we don't like the look of the loco we customized when we bought it?
3. 17:20 are we going to have to "maintain" our fleet
4. Can you make a video that showcases or lists every map?
For you first point welcome to bug squashing in pre-alpha stage lol
For your 2nd and 3rd points we've already answered both of those as "yes" in previous devlogs
another potential accessibility concern is to do with the hovering white info text.
I actually think I prefer Railroader's method of doing things where the destination track is just indicated by making the track itself light up.
yes!! We need different waybill colors
Demonstration of concept not final release.
@@ozinAdelaide I'm pretty everyone gets that. Forbidden to suggest something or what
just recently found this game, looks amazing, is there even a talk of when it might come out to play? it looks so much better than railroads online hate to buy that just to kill time til this comes out
Need some color coding on the alt-mode, like a black tag for engines, green for locations and red for loaded cars, yellow for unloaded cars. That kind of thing.
Im completely happen with how turntables and roundhouses are made in this game as its the one of the highlight things I enjoy out of train games is the style and controls they give and how to make it the way you want it. Clearly cant wait long enough for this gem of a game to come out.
One question can you guys add a mixed system so it would let people who understand psi better but one kilometers per hour that would be cool
Are you going to have track that is shall we say more rock and roll narrow gauge style?
Just thought to let you know
When this game drops I am literally never touching Railroads Online again
What a way to end off the year. Still waiting for it to come out.
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I'm sure many people watching these videos would spend their hard earned money on an early access. I know I definitely would.
True, but let them take their time.
And don't let instant gratification be the enemy of the good, either
You also have to remember this is also a game, everything doesn't have to be Perfect.
There are so many games that have suffered by trying to rush too quickly. I want them to have time to polish this game.
I fear that it's getting too complex and detailed for the devs after time and becomes the kind of game that "never gets done". Don't get me wrong, details are important and essential for good games but it can get too much to develop in a reasonable time.
Super Exited For the Release looks so cool
Really loving the UI additions! These will be helpful
ok, do the roundhouse doors have collsion? if they do , will bumping the door open it (or break it) depending on wich way its bumped?
Why can't every train game's turntable be as easy as this ones?
I absolutely cannot wait to see this game released, it's gonna be a banger for sure!
I'd say I need to see the loco coasting as it seems like its still "puffing" unlike what you see here in this video ruclips.net/video/d0qwSecaiyw/видео.htmlsi=6U-SQ9luuwH-hGkz&t=288
Where the loco is moving off regulator.
@Stooltoad5017 cheers bud I'll check that one out right now 👌
re: alt menu - use colors.
Also makes it so much easier to read against the light blue/white clouds skybox.
@@roadtrain_Exactly! Plus if something is the better way why shy away from implementing it?
its a pissmas bloody miracle
Could y'all make a thing where ppl can pull trains out of service also maybe time tables
will we be able to import our own heightmaps/terrain?
No. While one will be able to modify terrain with cuts, tunnels and fills there are no plans for any sort of custom maps.
What if you were to add physics for whistle squeak, or the tone of the whistle sounding different depending on how worn it is?
I'm getting more hyped for this game every dev
Big stupid question but can you run through the doors when being reckless?
Sierra 3 wears a Lima Shay Division 5 Chime, we've already showcased one in the Shay dev vlog.
@ ohhhh ok. Thanks dude, I’ll go check it out
Will there be a playable demo of some kind? Or an early access version at steam?
I doubt they’ll have have a demo/early access. They’re very much a ‘it’s done when it’s done’ team when it comes to game development. I personally think it’s a good thing. As long as they can afford it, they will likely release the game when it is complete.
Asked and answered too many times to count. There will be no early access or public beta.
Am I the one excited for track laying? Time to time we see pretty cool track and building layouts, but we don't know, how they got there
It was brought up in the last Q and A video. Essentially, the track in its current state can only be laid down on the dev side of things. The player currently can’t lay track.
@Stooltoad5017 As far as I remember, they said that the UI is under development and production. Maybe you are right then.
Will we get the option of having smoke jacks on both ends of the roundhouse so it doesn't matter how the engines get put away?
To the President of Studio 346. Not trying to be rude here so please hear me out. I am trying, very hard, to watch this beautiful presentation of your exciting and beautifully crafted game on a very large tv. With that being said, when you pan and move the camera around so rapidly, it literally gives me motion sickness. It also makes it a lot more difficult to take in what you’re trying to show us. Please slow your camera movements down for those of us who aren’t watching on a mobile device. Many thanks for putting this together for us. I’m excited to see the finished product!! Happy gaming. 👍🏽👍🏽😎
