  • Today we meet Brent who travels extensively every year in his Toyota Prius, that he loves!! And why not!!? He gets 50 MPG, has all the electricity he needs, can run AC overnight if he needs to, and gets an amazing amount of room from a tiny--and easy to drive--space!

Bob, to me you're a hero. You could just be out living your life and enjoying some nice scenery and solitude, but you chose to blaze a trail and leave a light on for others. Thanks to you, I know a way I can continue to care for my son (he is 28 and has autism and a seizure disorder), when we can no longer afford to rent a home.

I just bought a 2021 Prius and I'm in heaven! This car is roomier than my Mitsubishi outlander! Plus I bought a full size foam mattress for $150 and it fits perfectly in the back. I sleep and look up at the trees and moon through the huge window on the hatchback door. Perfect for me

As a Prius owner with well over 100k miles on mine, I’m gonna tell you right now, the battery and electric motor are the strongest and most durable parts of the car, and I expect the engine to go before both.

If you happen to drive a Prius, please get an EMF Radiation inspection done, or borrow a TriField Meter to check the levels yourself. While the engine is running, test all areas of the car, including driver area near the gas and brake pedal, as well as the trunk area. I would also recommend having an EMF Radiation Inspection done on your Van if you have solar panels. If your inverter is not doing its job, the DC current is not converted to AC and you have a Radiation problem. Again, please inspect. This is important since you live in a small space and all of these devices are close to your sleeping and sitting area. I'm not trying to create fear, just awareness.

Thanks for this-I’ve wondered about this issue but didn’t know how to ask the question. EMF radiation is a real thing not just wack-a-doodle paranoia. You’ve answered a question I never asked out loud- which is how do I find out if there’s any EMF radiation. But now what do I do about it if there is?

Great video! Just like always, Bob, you teach us to think
outside the box. Thinking of a Prius as a generator instead of a car is
perfect, and a very quiet generator, too! This video allows us to imagine
combining an environmentally friendly and free existence while tapping into our
creativity to make the inside of the Prius to match what works for us! Loved
    this video.

Love my Prius! Bought it new 15 years ago ('04) and it's been super reliable. The naysayers/FUDsters said that the battery would fail in 10 years or less, but that turned out to be fake news.
Just ordered a Tesla (after 15 years, thought it'd be a nice upgrade... still keeping the Prius though). Hearing the same "the battery will fail!" FUD. Some things never change.

Just as in most things in life it's a trade off based on what is important to you and what your needs are and of course what your budget will allow for. I want to be able to travel to CA to be with my grandchildren and be in surrounding areas, warm climates and no more winters. I have had the big house, I have worked for "stuff" all my life and I now know what really matters isn't "stuff" at all so I look forward to the day I can hit the road and be free! Thank you for the videos that continue to give me the encouragement and hope for my future.

Bob, I have a 2012 Prius V and it's stretching it to say the engine will completely recharge a depleted hybrid battery in 5 minutes at idle. At highway speeds probably but at idle when the car is sitting, there are the variables of how hot it is outside, whether the sun is shining directly on the car, etc. Once the hybrid battery discharges to a certain level, the engine automatically kicks on and charges the battery to about a third then shuts off again. It cycles like that. The Prius V does give you a lot more room and may be better suited for living out of. I still get 50 mpg in my prius V but that requires you knowing how to maximize the hybrid's ability and not driving a lot over 60 mph. It has been a great car. I wish It could be towed behind without a tow dolly. We still lean to the comfort side of the equation but I'm absorbing a lot from your great videos!

One important thing about lithium batteries is that lifetime goes up significantly if voltage range is smaller. Prius 0-100% charge is actually 20-80%. Plus they cap charge speeds to 3.3😢 Also, people think you have to replace battery in 10 years. With Nickel, that might have been the case, but with lithium, barring catastrophic failure, you’ll get maybe 70-80% capacity which is still very usable.

This rig really makes me miss my CHEVETTE diesels and my old Isuzu pup with C223T TurboDiesel. The little vettes would get 50mpg and the pup pickup truck offered 40mpg. I can only dream what a person would do for mileage if the Prius had a diesel engine as part of the drive system. Great piece of engineering on your rig man.

Engineering background. Where can I find d one of those because it was all Greek to me. Helps to not be claustrophobic I would imagine. Kind of like an early space capsule. Not for me but happy it suits his needs. Happy trails.

I camp in my 2015 Prius. Wondering about the weight Brents set up adds to his "rig". A gallon of water is a little over 8 pounds. Also would like to know what his mpg average is. How much weight did he loose by taking out the back seat?

It seems like Toyota could make a version with better ground clearance and maybe make it have some more head room, too.

Add the largest tires you can get, and they have kits to raise the body up for off road driving.

Hi Bob, love your videos as always. I was wondering if the Prius could handle towing something like a teardrop trailer, or roof top storage?

I drove across the country in a prius and and slept in the back with the seats folded down. I am 6 ft tall and was able to lay down fully stretched out. I dont fit, but by putting some things in the gap between the front and back seats to rest my head i did fit. learned that the RV prius life is not for me. was too paranoid of being in random areas and exposed to strangers always being outside the car. Was just too small. I also should have built a better shade system to block the windows from the sun like this guy

Maybe a Prius and tow a teardrop. Be able to stretch out. Watch TV.

Mike Mead The prius doesn't save much gas on the hi way except at cruise speed. The gas engine has to compensate and the electric just assists. The benefits come at city speeds. Although the air conditioning overnight is tempting.

My Odyssey gets 25 mpg and makes the perfect camper, plenty of space. The Prius would be too small.

I got a roof box on my set up, I bought an aerodynamic box, with aerodynamic bars and its quite high off the roof....because of its design it hasnt affected the mpg (50-60mpg same as my old Smart car) and wind noise is barely noticeable. Because I have an estate car I have a permanent bed set up that makes a cool lounger, with a side unit that acts as storage, a worktop and a small coffee table right beside me. Spaces where the rear doors are are great to put my pre-made, ready to go bags (for gym, changing, work, uni) which doesnt look camping but homely. Camp set up takes two mins to put buddha and my crystals out :p The jade plant is permanently fixed haha.
Because its an estate car, it has windows so when its cold outside and I shut the tailgate door, I dont feel claustrophobic just cosy and still connected to nature outside :) I have laptop/phone/mini speaker which charge off a small solar panel on dashboard even on a cloudy day. That folds away to zilch :) Small Stanley cool box in rear footwell and according to my measurements I will be able to fit a 3.9kg propane tank in the other.
And the car drives smooth, easy to park, super dupa stealth. I expect mpg to go down slightly with my clothes in roof box and some other shit but with money I save I can re-map car to enhance performance and bring the mpg back up ;)
Gunna do another vid on set up as it just is an awesome space with my personal bits in, and a mandala divider for privacy. I love him. Changing is tight but do-able but then I have gym for that and I have a surfing towel robe which by the beach or in nature in the warmer months. I even have an en-suite :p
      Have I covered everything? :D
It can be done guys, theres pros and cons to everything in life, just gotta figure what works for you, and the way you roll. I would advise dont go building platforms and stuff straight off bat because long term it might really not suit you. Get things that blend and co-ordinate and you will soon start to build your dream car camper in your mind as you are in it.
One last thing.......minimalise to the utter bare minimum. In your car and in your house clearance so if you do require storage, its smaller payment and if you do decide to full time for a very long time, when you come to clearing that storage unit, its not a big ball ache. I am putting very little in storage but enough should I need to move back into a conventional home The amount of stuff I am donating that was just sitting there is a wake up call to me, all that stuff I kept 'just in case' or had faux sentimental attachment to....these aspects of life are within my heart and are always with me. I dont need visual reminders

A big key to Prius fuel economy is the very aerodynamic shape and the low-to-the-ground stance. Not good for rough roads, of course, but it looks like the Prius shines as a stealth vehicle. Some setups have room for two people

Now we just need someone to open a shop that will install the Prius V electric engine in my Ford E350 Van, to work along side the V8. Allowing for the ability to have the AC/Heater anywhere anytime. That would truely be the best of both worlds.
