    The 2021 MacBook will probably get way better battery life and a much more consistent upgrade cycle. But by going ARM we lose a lot of the good stuff X86 delivered. And it also means no more Bootcamp. Do you think this is Apple's future? Do you like it??!

      To be fair, Apple TV dropped in price after the switch from Intel to the A-series. Even the higher priced models are still cheaper to this day.

    • @CalistoLP
      @CalistoLP 4 года назад +9

       SuperHyphyOne : But Apple TV is a consumer product. Macs aren't.
      Look at which scores Apple advertises for the iMac - Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X, Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, .... -- all Pro apps;
      The iMac Pro is just the "bigger brother" of the iMac - for big companies. But both versions of the iMac and all screen sizes (21.5" and 27") are only targeting pros, according to Apple...
      Apple has given up the consumers on the Mac years ago (which is why it's confusing that they even put out Apple Arcade on the Mac at all...)

    • @SuperHyphyOne
      @SuperHyphyOne 4 года назад +5

      Eric Freiberg they put Apple Arcade on the Mac for consistency with its other platforms especially after developing Catalyst.
      They only show those scores on the higher end models because those are the products that are targeted towards professionals. They don’t show scores for its lower end models like the MacBook Air or base 13” MacBook Pro because those aren’t targeted to them. Those are “consumer” products, albeit a bit on the expensive side.

    • @VMYeahVN
      @VMYeahVN 4 года назад +131

      Apple doesn't care about the Hackintosh community, it's such a small fraction of the customer base it has no effect on them financially. The switch to ARM will kill the Hackintosh community, but it's not the reason Apple is doing this at all, that will just happen to be a by-product of the switch. They're doing this just so they have better control over their products like Dave said in the video. Especially since Intel's development has been so ridiculously lackluster for the last few years. Also these ARM chips will START in the lower end Macs, but eventually be put in the Mac Pro/iMac Pros/Macbook Pros too. They are going to work their way up the product line with the ARM chips, by that point, developers will likely have ported even pro x86 apps to be able to run on the ARM chips.

With Play Store integration on Chrome OS it solved the lack of apps especially essential apps (before, there are no native (non-web) apps on Chrome OS). But that will probably kill some of iPad's userbase since the apps is now available on the ARM Macbook, the only advantage to iPad is now solely the touchscreen itself.

If x-86 is no longer available on mac ill probably switch to linux because there is really no point in developing my code for both architectures. If you need a laptop, go ahead and get one today. The 16" MacBook Pro is a no compromises awesome machine, and the 12" MacBook can be found used for under $800 in the U.S. The new MacBook Air is also good if you need something new but lighter and less pricey than the 16" MacBook Pro. If you're reading this in 2021, I'd wait for ARM, but for now, just get a Mac! I upgraded to the 16" MacBook Pro from a 2012 15" MacBook Pro and passed the latter to my mom. In total I used the 2012 MacBook Pro for three and a half years, and I imagine we enthusiasts won't be holding onto laptops for longer than that, so your next upgrade cycle really isn't _that long_ from now.

    There are a lot of Arm processors that require cooling, Arm isn’t magically power efficient, it depends on the processor you design. You also have to consider that Apple’s process node is on 7nm while Intel is still on 14nm, which is a pretty big difference. I would hope Apple would make a powerful enough CPU that would require active cooling, even on a 5nm node, without cooling it likely won’t pass 4ghz, which would be very disappointing, considering AMD and Intel are already hitting 5ghz. Having high frequencies is very important for many applications, and won’t be solved by having more cores or a smaller node.

      Tech Journalists and Futurists would desperately beg to differ with you... They see no reason why the A13 or A14 chip can't run full-blown MacOS. They just want the physical aspects of an iPad in laptop form... Which is why there was so much excitement from this particular crowd of Apple acolytes when mouse support was added to the iPad Pro and they came out with a folding keyboard with trackpad attachment... And the rest of the tech world didn't really feel too "into it". I'd say these acolytes are drinking a bit too much Kool-Aid and are heavily affected by Apple's "Reality Distortion Field".
      For this crowd, all they care about is battery life and "good enough" performance in a pretty package. That's literally it. And you know what? Apple wouldn't be wrong on selling this product to them.

    This might be my favourite Dave2D video in a long time.
    Also, you should've mentioned the fact that when apple transitioned from PowerPC TO Intel, they rolled out a utility called Rosetta, that allowed Mac users to port their PowerPC based apps to the x86 architecture. I'm guessing that they will do something similar this time.
    And, this is the first time in a really long time that we have seen apple lower its prices, so I'm pretty confident they will lower the prices of the MacBooks, but not by much. They probably will sell the new MacBooks for 150-200 bucks cheaper than their current price. This way they will lower the prices and also be able to keep the profits.

      Take for eg the SE,the reason why it was so cheap was due to the fact it dident require any innovation rather it made up of the thing which they already had made and was quite easy for them to replicate that which in turn helped bringing it's cost down.

      @@utubekullanicisi Of course that's not only for planned obsolence, that's also to make sure only them can repair it, just like they currently do with touchID and storage issues. So not only can they charge whater they want for repairs in full monopoly (even more that the cost of a new machine, that's how they make planned obsolescence... in addition to secretly throttling their devices though software updates of course), but they can also claim "water damage, your warranty is void" and nobody else could repair it even if untrue.
      They're so dedicated to planned obsolence that "their own chips" are actually chips made by another company with a special contract to not sell them to anybody else, of course to avoid that repairs shop can get their hands on them...

Maybe it's only to get the macbooks closer to iPad so that iPad is even more of a laptop in the future.
