Bass Station II vs. OP-Z (Sequencing AFX Mode)

  • AFX Mode puts a distinct patch on each key of the Bass Station II keyboard. The OP-Z has a robust sequencer that lets us take advantage of this.
    I'll show you how I set up MIDI for this, and then do a performance.

    Disable outgoing MIDI in the Bass Station by pressing option then shift then put the Mod wheel in up position, then put OSC1 into triangle then function three times then C F F#.. worked in version 2.3.6.6.7653a
    I’ll buy a Bass Station 2 because of AFX mode... and also because of this video ❤️

    I've had similar instances with dealing with other hardware I have interconnected. I had a little DIY FM synth that would reset all the values of the arp every time I would hit play and it was so maddening. Took some manual diving and a ton of reading on how the cc and NRPN systems worked but eventually found a menu that I could turn off cc received and voila I could finally record those delicious arps in my DAW. I guess the play function was sending a secret cc message to my synth causing its arp to take a dump. Sorry, I know it doesn't help just relating with the struggle. Awesome little hack for that IDM sound, and only the best in luck cracking the code.

    I wonder if further updates will make it is easier to sequence external gear with less issues. I don't have an OP-Z, or much gear that I could even sequence, but the idea of sequencing external gear with the OP-Z is super attractive to me as it seems INCREDIBLY fun to use punch in effects from the OP-Z in a set.

      the spirit and kja Maybe I should have worded my comment better. The point is, there is functionality and controls in the OP-Z that aren’t available through the UI so it would be nice if it was implemented in a nicer way and it seems as if this would be very possible.

    For those weird MIDI problems controlling stuff you don't want to be controlled you could try to monitor the raw MIDI data with an application like MIDI-OX (which is stone old and Windows only, oof (but still works perfectly fine)) or Renoise's MIDI monitor.
    This will give you at least a hindsight of what is happening under the hood as you can see every single command that is being sent and maybe you could figure out if it's some option on the side of the Bass Station that you have to disable or if it's just a bug in the OP-Z firmware.

    It's very good. Sorry for a bit dumb question. but how do you think. Is it possible for no only OP Z and Novation Bass station to do this kind of sequencing thing but for OP Z and Afx Station(it was released not so long ago)too? Since they both( Bass Station II and Afx station) are released by novation. I'm newbee to a world of synth sequencing. All you do in this video is relatively simple, yet it is really cool to know for sure. Because if it's really simple then it's good idea to use this setup for making music of course. Thanks in advance, Great job, really.

    • @MichaalHell
      @MichaalHell 5 лет назад

      Just to iterate on your problem.
      I think what is happening is that bassstation is sending midi data on channel 1. OP-Z midi in is fixed on channel 1-16, so kick track is channel 1 and video track is 16. Midi cc’s are fixed at 1-16. So midi cc 1 is synth param1/pitch (on drum tracks) and 16 is volume.

    i just got a mother 32 so ive been sequencing it with an op-z. at first i was getting problems with the kick track's midi going to it because it was channel 1. an easy fix, or so i thought at the time, was to move all the kick samples to the FX track and use them there because personally im not into using music/ samples (id rather make them myself). yesterday i thought about maybe just changing the midi channels but this made me realize that wouldnt be easier than what i did lol
    edit: sequencing not sewencing 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @feteti
      @feteti 5 лет назад +1

      the best move is probably just changing the mother's midi receive channel to one of 5-8 (the OPZ synth channel tracks). I'm using the OPZ to sequence 4 separate hardware synths on the 4 synth tracks and that works like a charm

    • @1db1db1db

  • @yannih682

    I'm curious if the Bass Station has some CC controls that are set to Channel 1 by default. I have a Nektar Impact Keyboard and found that the knobs were trying to control CC because it had like defaulting mapping to it. I had to read into the manual a bit more to realize that I needed to alter the channel it was sending to. Basically the Nektar keyboard immediately wanted to control Channel one when plugging it in, even though the OPZ had already been configured to not do that >,>
    Not sure if this is what may have been happening with the knobs controlling the kick track

    @red means recording: regarding the problem with the drum track receiving cc parameter change (P1 and volume in your example), do you have the same problem when using the OP-Z without the app ? i experienced similar problem when using op-z as midi master while using the app. It seem the op-z is confused at some point because you have the app controlling it and the device should act as master for your other devices at the same time. I don't know if i'm clear.
    Maybe your synth also send midi messages ?

    • @sfxElrick
      @sfxElrick 5 лет назад

      you may also connect the OP-Z and your synth to your computer and use MIDI patch bay to route the op-z to your synth, the point is to be able to catch midi messages with MIDI Monitor (for example) to see what's happen.
