After watching for about 2 years and a few months... bad gear has multiple meanings. There is the 80's term "thats one Bad motherboard" " it's so Bad its good" or "its so Bad your dad won't even watch it" personally I just love the amount of personality this content has. Its so cool that you dont bother showing your studio setup... we know by now you have an RE-201 space echo from the decade I born in etc. Its just good fun learning about stuff I didn't know or having a new perspective on gear I have had or knew someone that had. Personally love the bass station because even though its sound pallet is limited its array of features keep things interesting and positive and oh the one thing Moog wont squeeze into a synth thats always deep bass... a Sine wave

Since I have my for almost a decade, I can mention limits of its build quality and downsides. After years - knobs simply started to fall apart and disintegrate, pitch and mod wheels cannot be calibrated anymore and cleaning doesnt help, also the keys have went full yellow. I can personally live with that and you know what, if it stops working fully, I just get new one, because yeah it is freaking awesome..

I'm honestly quite surprised this made it on here! my second strike on my bad gear bingo card. Great episode as always, I had no idea what angle you were going to come at this one from, considering this is so universally liked, but you had some valid points. I was really late to the party & only got one about a year ago, it always struck me as 'unremarkable' until I got one, I was pleasantly surprised by how much better it sounded than i expected. It can be maybe a bit too harsh & resonant sometimes & definitely not as wild as some of the other (more expensive) pure analogue synths around these days. I still think it deserves to be regarded as a classic, there isn't much you can get for the same money that does quite as much as this thing. PS, leave the virus alone!! 😛

I shuddered briefly when the pix of the Virus B and Drumstation popped up, then celebrated their non-appearance with a bottle of Olde Neckbearder's Vintage Mindrotte Ale. Survival! I live to noodle another day.
I owned an original plastic Bass Station keyboard in an era when 303s were going for the GDP of Monaco. It squelchfarted its way through most of my 90s tracks with only an occasional random detuning meltdown. I eventually donated it to the skint synthnerd offspring of a family friend, who still misuses it in the time-approved fashion.
I'm fond of the Novation sound and front panels, and currently provide a comfortable retirement home for a Drumstation, a Nova 2, an Ultranova, and a Supernova, so I have no need of the Bass Station Junior. Putting it up against a vintage analogue mono synth with a Dr Bob filter would not be a fair fight.
I run across Bass Station Juniors on occasion in Drum n Bass recording cupboards, where they do the raspy wub bass business with no fuss, no mess. All bud, no dust.
They're dirt cheap used here, so they're the logical option for skint noisemakers. The aftertouch and the AFX wibble are what keeps them useful. Add a fuzz/wah, and you're cooking with gas. ,Also, despite being made entirely of plastic, they can survive a direct hit from an asteroid without flinching.

The BassStation 2 is certainly a huge improvement on the original.
One possible thing you should look at is the use of game peripherals in an EDM setup. I just picked up a RockBand 3 wireless keyboard controller for $20 at my local thrift shop because I noticed a 5-pin DIN plug on the side. Sure enough, it’s a MIDI out, and when interfaced with a computer or synth it makes it a relatively cheap keytar that offers pitch bend/mod controller, octave transpose and program change. It would make for a fun visual effect for performance live.

Bad gear my arse. The BS2 is the last of my synths I would sell, it’s so versatile and nice to use. If you think it only works for driven sounds, you probably don’t know that the osc mixer saturates when a knob is turned past 12 o’ clock. A world of slimmer, beautiful sounds lurk on the left side of the knob range :) Good episode, but wouldn’t have expected this one on the show lol!

  • @TooSlowTube

I found the user interface annoying - it looks like knob per function but it really isn't. Almost every knob is overloaded with different functions, and so are the buttons - which is why I lost patches trying to save them more times than I succeeded.
All the functions assigned to the keyboard kept getting added to, in firmware updates, so you either have to have a manual with your, or print out a cheat sheet and tape it to the side of the synth.
I never really could get a sound I liked out of the filter, despite all the different settings. When they finally added a key tracking amount it got a little bit better, but that's still only a choice of 8 settings... at least the last time I checked.
I took the keyboard off and fitted a knobbly MIDI controller in the space. 16 more knobs and it started to make more sense, but I still didn't actually like it much.
I still have it, in a box, but it's the one synth I regret spending money on.

Got reduced by over 50 % within the first months of existence and discontinued....but can be programmed completely without computer on the unit itself. Need I say more?

    • @ThMntnst
      @ThMntnst Год назад +1

@@InkyDaCaT Haha, yeah, it's dubious in so many ways! - Since the thing does only sync other stuff, it really needed to be stable in the internal clock. If this was the case, I would be Ok with it being the masterclock. This way, it's just contributing to a madman's-swing-hurdi-gurdi. Try hooking a powered MIDI-thru to it and control all the things at once. It brings you to the edge of sanity 😀
And about the MPC Live (and the models in that line): the padlayout of the MPC itself is (or was, I did not check with mine dusting away in the distance of my room) stupid, so this happens quite often when trying to hook a pad-controller to it.
