Dude, you´re the man. This is a really useful tutorial and a great example of the vast potential AFX mode has opened up in an already ridiculously versatile synth. The BSII has long been a classic, but these latest updates have really opened up a MASSIVE can of wormy goodness. Talk about reinventing the wheel: AFX mode = a whole editable BSII in every key on the keyboard. And as you show here, it can be much more than glitchy madness: analogue drum machine, split / merge, graded timbres across the keyboard, multitimbrality, microtonality, different aftertouch/modwheel/velocity routings per key, SFX banks, you name it. Not to mention a tunable third oscillator, glide diverge (trippy AF), envelope retrig, oscilator error (effectively VCO style with selectable detune) ... Long live the Bass Station II: the understated, dirt-cheap King of the Monosynths.
Thanks Jorb! My studio is packed away in my office for the last few months along with my bs2 in process of moving homes, but when I’m settled, I’m going to absolutely dive into the afx mode. Thanks so much and keep up the awesome content
Oh boy, thank you so much for making this tutorial! I'm starting with BS2 as my first synth and this is the single most rewarding tutorial I've seen so far. I got the basics from the manual and already understand my way around the synth, but actually making and shaping sounds with it, that still eludes me. And you're showing that very nicely in this video. Thanks again and have a glorious day!
@@JorbLovesGear I tend to use it in afx mode, but then layer multiple passes and slice it up in Ableton. I want to start using it a bit more melodically lol. This video helps with that!
I have no idea about synthesis. Lil richard fan i am i bought the afx station to get into synthesis (i got it ridiculously cheap like 350€-ish) and this video is one of the ones ill but in my learn bs2 playlist. Tysm!!!
Just got this synth and MAN it made me appreciate synths way more.. cool video! by the way, what is that device on the left? looks sick ! thanks for this video man
Hello! To the video maker or to any synth people in general. I’m looking to pick up my first physical synth ( Bass Station 2) after years of using DAW synths for my songwriting. I’m wondering what sort of speaker/amp I need to play this in my room. Doesn’t need to be crazy loud, so quality over volume for me. And then, how do the cords work? Is it like an electric guitar where you just stick the cord in both ends and it should go? I’ve not seen a ton of talk about the speakers/setup/cords side of Synths.
I use a normal 1/4in cable, just like guitar, into a mixer, and then that into KRK powered speakers. You could go straight into powered speakers, or a PA then in to speakers, lots of options, at essentially any price point. Im sure theres good info out there!
@JorbLovesGear Thank you, that side of Synths is a lot more confusing for me than Electric Guitar since for beginners they often have bundle deals that will have everything you need right there. Do all powered speakers essentially have a 1/4 jack or should I be looking out for a certain brand/brands of speakers?
Cheers! Yes, I tried to compress to account for it, but think I ended up hitting the limiter a lot of the time. Maybe it's time I start recording my voice and synth audio separately 😬
Sort of, same 2 oscillators, same filter, but I think there's just one envelope? And. Doesn't have features like afx mode And it has different mod routings, and is set up to have each oscillator sequenced separately. Similar yes, the same, no.

Hey Jorb. I just picked up a Bass Station II for $125, definitely a steal. This video was very helpful. Another great video.

Great 1st choice! Very flexible, great sounding mono.
Cheers, thank you!
This is my main analog mono. It's just such a well-rounded piece of gear - I tend to use it as a drum machine. Great video Jorb!
Cheers thank you! When you use it as a drum machine running afx mode? Or samples or another trick?

I've been too lazy/busy (lazy) to upload the update. . .you gave some good examples of why it might be a good idea. Danke.
This was your reminder, go download it now!
@@JorbLovesGear Yeah, sounds like a good idea. I love gear with free updates.
This stuff reminds me of Loopop in a very comfortable way. Love it.
High praise, thank you so much. Hes the best
Wow! I had no clue that the bass station was so versatile! That riser would be super useful live!
In constantly impressed with it, really does sound great.
It’s really an amazing feature for a synth at that price point.
It's huge, if there was one more octave of keys & a few more panel controls, it would be impossible to have any complaints
novation and their firmware upgrades - just amazing.
Just found my way here. Nice presentation. Instantly subscribed.
Cheers, really appreciate it.
Always working on more!
🔝🎹🔝
just what I was looking for. Dope channel
You convinced me, I must own one...

Great sounding synth! I want one :)
Can highly recommend it! Super flexible, sounds nutty
That split patch reminded me of the Tangerine Dream score for Legend
High praise 😁
Classic!!!
Gimme your gimmicky any good ol’ day, Gorb… whoops, Jorb. Genius stuff!
High praise, really appreciate it.
Bro dials in nicer sounds in 2s than I get in ten minutes. I need to practise this 😂
😅🙏🙏
Is there any differences besides logo and colours between the BSII and the AFX station run? All due respect with the firmware upgrade for the OG BSII
Absolutely no difference
Excellent content! Subscribed:)

@Jorb Turns out the previous owner of mine already made some funky drums, a delete function could come in handy at some point. 😅
Yeah, having to use software to clear is a big pain in the ass.
Hope novation adds an on-panel way soon!

Nice junji ito sticker
cool uzumaki sticker
I love it
what is the oscilloscope , have you done an episode about integrating one of those in the studio workflow? cheers
B&K precision 1530!
I haven't given it it's own episode, mostly it helps me demonstrate.
hmm, diatonic major and minor 3rds on osc 2 assigned each key.
Dude I had no Idea about all of that!!! Awesome stuff!
Also maybe you could make your voice a bit more balanced compared to the sound ;)
Cheers!

that certainly wouldn't hurt ;P

I want one of those old CRT style oscillators so bad how much do they go for?

Is the Novation Mono station similar to the BS2? as in a smaller form factor ? Thanks in advance

@@JorbLovesGear Thank you so much for the reply and the info, I shall remove it from my GAS list 😉
I still haven’t updated my BS2 firmware and for the life on me, I cannot understand why (lazy).
This is your sign, cue it up 😂

What's the oscilloscope thing?
Its, well an oscilloscope! B&K Precision 1530

@@JorbLovesGear whats' your approach with triggering on the scope? your waveform captures look pretty clean and stationary!
Are you a Junji Itō fan by a chance?
oh f its a monosynth? whaaat
