#DidYouKnow: Bike wheels that are thicker will lessen the potential speed of the bike because there is a greater wheel surface to create friction against the surface which will slow the bike.

Ball bearing is spherical in shape and it reduces friction because area in contact is very low and it doesn't allows friction to act on the balls and surface irregularities are also less.

Like others have said, ball bearings are spherical and that makes them very low in friction. Balls, as you may know, also roll much easier and freely than any other 3D shape.
One thing other's haven't mentioned is that the balls can be shaped really precisely. Not all of them are the same, and not all of them are made from the same material. That is why ball bearings come in different qualities, some spin faster than others. It all depends on how well rounded the bearings are. The smoother they are, the less friction and the more speeds they can reach.
Sometimes they are greased or lubricated to have even less friction and this can make them gain acceleration incredibly fast.
The bearings also have "shields" that protects them from getting dirt or any small particles that may disturb the smoothness. How well these shields do their job depends obviously on the quality of the bearing.
