I spent a lot of time in that galley as a kid. I actually managed to go aboard and explore the ship back in '05. Everything on that ship was grand in every sense of the word. One of my biggest regrets is not getting to sail on it when they brought it back out for a few years. There'll never be a ship like that again. It was the very pinnacle of classic laker design.
My dad sailed on this ship and I got a tour but I was very little and didn’t remember it much. This was very awesome to get a refresher and watch this!!
That's really cool Tanner I wish I could see it in person and do a new video tour a little better quality. My grandpa use to take me down by it when i was a kid when it was laid up in Sturgeon Bay and I loved it ever since.
Jacob Hartl it’s a very cool ship and I just wish it would go back into service but it would be too much money to put a self unloader on a ship that’s small in the first place.
Very interesting video. Just one thing, hopefully it was a problem with my computer but the audio kept fading in and out, I could only hear about an eight of the dialog.
I remember walking down that long corridor when I was 7 years old. My dad was a welder there at the shipyard. I watched the boat launch the previous year. Plan to build a large model of it for R/C.
@@justaboatnerd1110 I'm about to start a go fund me page to get her going again. Hate to see it sitting. Wouldn't be a bad vessel to haul passengers. Or put it on land for people to tour and see like a museum.
Jacob Hartl Personally I think she should replace the William A Irvin but that’s just my opinion, I also think she should go back to Sturgeon Bay and become a museum
Very interesting. Especially seeing this ship sitting high and dry in Superior. I can overlook any technical problems with the production for the chance to see this stuff and hear their experiences.
Tally ho! Splendid vid. These three gentlemen clearly love British ship building culture. And after all these centuries across the Atlantic Ocean, there are still some English words in their language! Wow!
An unloader like the Roger Blough (below deck) would be nice. Idk if a boom crane unloader would look good on it tbh. But its sad it sits because of that one missing feature.
Absolutely amazing. I'm so thrilled that you made this video. My many questions and curiosities have been answered. What's the current location and status, such as are there still tours on her etc?
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The ship is docked in superior wisconsin as of right now and is laid up full time. There are no tours available that im aware of. This was taped in early 2003 or so when it was for sale owned by another company, and they were doing tours one weekend.
Not sure if she’s still the fastest, but she’s still known as Fast Eddie, and is still one of the faster ones: not bad for a ship that hasn’t sailed in 15+ years and is closing on 65 years old. Those horns are a symphony of two, though: to abandon such rich voices for our ships was a shame on all mankind.
Footage of the Fitzgerald wreck proves that all the hatch clamps weren't in place. All the clamps that were in place were sheared off and the ones that weren't are just hanging there. It seems highly unlikely but the proof is in photographs and video.
@Aaron I'm not sure who's responsibility it would have been to secure the hatches but there's photos of the clamps at the wreck site, the ones that were locked down got wrenched so that they're no longer in the shape of a C, they've been straitened out when the hatch covers violently ripped off from the air escaping the cargo holds. All of the clamps that weren't latched are still intact and are still the proper shape. There's also some pics of the Fitz going through the locks with only a few clamps in place after having supposedly passed through a storm but I can't verify that but the fact that only some of the clamps were in place at that time is indisputable. It sounds like negligence but according to several other captains they don't think the hatches leaking was a contributing factor. The death blow has been pretty well indisputably explained also in my opinion by the fact that the the first 2 cargo hatch covers are in the the cargo holds as opposed to having been ripped off like all the others which indicates a massive wave having rolled up the deck and building up against the wheelhouse imploding the hatch covers and filling the holds with water in a matter of a few seconds sending her on her way to bottom virtually immediately.
@Aaron you're right. There's pictures of the Fitz passing through the locks with only some clamps on the cargo hatches and having supposedly just passed through a storm. I can't verify that though but it was sure-as-shit only some clamps in place in the photo.
Just wondering if this was true and if anyone else heard this but I heard that they moved the Ryerson and is preparing her to sail again just wondering if that was true or false I mean I'd love to see it sail again if it does just wondering if anyone else heard anything??

@@markviereck4547 Yes it is I think its one of the best looking! Becuase it is a stright deck and not self unloading it is laid up and deemed useless at this point. If they would stick some money into make it some sort of conveyer system to self unloaad it probably would sail again but the way the economy is it could be sitting for another century or longer.
That's what I've been wondering, it's been dry-docked at Fraiser ship yards in Superior since last fall, but they don't appear to be doing anything to it.
There was a rumor going around that she was going to be converted to a self unloader and have her turbines replaced with diesel electric to be put back into service. But plans fell through.
Saw a recent video of this ship and the years of layup have began to show she’s looking worse for wear now her time on the world 🌎 stage might be over for good
No matter of the quality, this is Smithsonian material ! Especially as time’s flying and the fleet is shrinking. Thank you so much, mate.
Thank you so much for posting this. I've been waiting for a solid, in depth video of the Ryerson.
Im hoping I can get into contact with Central Marine Logistics and video tape a new clearer tour of the ship.

Although I don't regret being a truck driver for the last 34 years, if I had to start over again, I would try a career on the Great Lakes ships.
Something nice to see...a tour of the Ryerson!
The Ryerson is one of my favorite ships next to the Anderson the Stewart J Court and the Blough
My favorite Great Lakes ship
Mine too!

Missing vent caps cant sink you maybe you should run that theory past the captain of the mv Derbyshire
The guide said the captain could order the crew into the "weather tunnels" during inclement weather. Could this be what happened on the Fitz?
Such a beautiful ship. I hope “Fast Eddy” leaves Fraser one day :(

There are at least two pilot houses(forward superstructure) on land around the lakes. I think 1 may be from a Ford boat.
