Clickbait. Totally useless segment. Not one bit of info on how to detect if a skimmer is attached. Telling viewers to compare to other readers is useless if other readers are also compromised
This just happend to me on the 3rd $1490 gone, want a tip ok heres what i will do now only use cash phuck this......
Pull on the top, they take 4 seconds to snap over existing one and not fastened down. ALWAYS pull from top towards yourself and if it’s a skim, it’ll pop right off with little effort

1:28 is your time stamp. Got my card skimmed at a taco bell drive thru a decade ago. Police arrested 23 people including the cashier. The ring leader was involved in all kinds of shady stuff like bribery with city contracts

Why do businesses not put in a written policy of checking those terminals by their employees daily as a way of conducting business.
Businesses have the power to stop this nonsense.
Another news report from another city revealed that in cases of elaborate covers, employees tended to be involved in the scam. The cover has to be designed for the specific reader, and once an employee has determined all the camera angles, an associate can quickly and easily attach the device. Most stores aren't willing to invest in additional, secret cameras.
The 99 cents only store did that in training and they always have tape over it. Too bad it's going out of business. Hopefully other companies and businesses do the same and at least try to prevent it

When I worked for a grocery store we were required to check the terminals regularly
And Apple/Google $500 gift cards were the method of choice for scammers for years, you can see it a lot from scambaiter kitbota. Business responses have been pathetic. It's consistent. Not sure what to make of that. General societal decline?

Often times the cashiers/attendants are in on the scam.
Indians
They are always in on it. They are low paid part of the business. You have the lowest paid employee handing all the transactions. Same in a restaurant the waiters are paid 3 hour plus tips...of course they will skim credit cards for extra money.
@eb7027 Not always! There are cases in which criminals add them to self checkout card readers or to those where even with a cashier and you slide them yourself. Thry take seconds to install! Rewatch the video where they showed the Rochester story and the police officer talked about loss prevention noticing two suspicious shoppers and sure enough, they installed one. Thry noticed fast enough to remove it, but were still searching for the suspects who placed it there. One of them took it from their coat pocket! Employees saved the day there!

Yank the the shit out of it as they use 2 sided tape that will yank off. Use your smart phone to see if there is a blue tooth signal with no name but a series of numbers or letters.

Why are police not doing anything to these store owners? They have cameras on the register but not on the skimmer? This is a thrid degree felony and police will do more work chasing shop lifters than protect the community from stuff like this.
They should make them out of clear acrylic plastics
Not to be rude but what would you hope to be able to tell by "looking under or 'through' the hood"? 99% of people wouldn't know the difference between resistor and a diode, let alone the difference between one layer of clear plastic and two.

Why aren’t the establishments responsible for policing their payment devices? Is it b/c the payment clerks and/ or the store mgrs are in on the swipe scam?
If the operators of stores and the devices were held financially and legally responsible, no doubt they’d be “Jonny-on-the-spot”, but b/c the financial institutions are the ones on the hook, the stores don’t bother the police this activity
Quite often, employees and even managers are the ones doing the scam. It's rarely a person from outside the company. This is especially true of franchised locations (fast food, gas stations, etc). If you try to check for a skimmer and they act defensive, you might have just found one.
So, I get it that the criminals attach these skimmers to high traffic areas. What I do not understand is how there has not been some form of scanning device invented so that business owners can scan their machines for tampering?
Where are these criminals 'reading' the stolen information from? There must be a way to 'follow the money if everything done online leaves a digital footprint?
Who manufactures the fake attachments? Surely, these are high-tech equipment purchases that could be traced?
🟥 You would want to check the manufacturer of these machines. Where else would you get such precise measurements? It's not like you can stand at a reader and take measurements without being noticed.

Its usually a standalone device that has its own scanner, data storage, and sometimes wireless connectivity. It almost sounds like you think they're getting hacked. Anyway, not a bad idea to have a tamper seal that disable the device if opened but in the videos example a device was slipped over it.

Staff is involved more often than not, especially at convenience stores like 7-11. The parasites in St. Paul need to create laws making the businesses liable which will then fix many of the issues. Staff need to check them routinely. But in St. Paul they’re more worried about putting the trans flag in public spaces, buildings and publi schools instead of actually helping citizens
The staff and at times the establishment were involved, how do I know? I did that in year 2000 when bank card still use magnetic strip, in 2015 they changed to embedded chips and I rounded my operation 😅
One store I frequent, puts their branded tape on the reader in the same place on all the machines. Originally, I thought it was to keep the older ones working before replacement.
Don't use debit card, as the money goes out of your bank account whereas credit card is a charge you can dispute.
Not only that police now say they can not give out the locations where the skim readers are found. Why are they always protecting the criminals??

One local store in my area updated their card readers and I don’t think anyone will be able to put skimmers on them. They are much different from the old ones.
What would stop a person from placing a skimmer on a “maned “station a simple distraction a few seconds . Cashiers I’m not the highest level of security in the store. Lost prevention professionals should be scanning each of those registers daily as part of their opening duties. Store is in fail to protect the consumers should also be held liable for what their machines do.
In one sense, it's good, because these new stores, that don't take cash, or have sales clerks like in Las Vegas International can be vulnerable to have skimming devices put on their devices, in these stores. There is a way, for these thieves to be invisible to surveillance cameras.
Besides the oddball location, what places/cashiers run the credit card for you anymore? Most businesses don't even have behind the counter card scanners anymore.
I wonder if banks check their banks EVERY DAY? Twice a day? Surely, it would take a few minutes - a job for the manager I think.

Here in Brasil credit cards use chips instead of that magnetic strip or are wireless. These are safer methods. We also have a third method which is reading a QR code generated by the machine, usually operated by the cashier or by ourselves. This is even safer thant the previous ones.
Would the skimmer still take care information if we use tap??
The skimmer works by being placed on top of the card reader, so why not attach some kind of jig that will obstruct the skimmer from being placed on top of the card reader?
What about the stores that claim they didn't see someone put it on There's a video from a store where the scanner is only a few feet away and they cler claimed not to know anything about it.

What's bad is that Walmart on purposely doesn't allow tapping at their self check out stands.
Why doesn't the store do checks on their machines? In the morning, another mid day, and another in the evening...
Happened to me twice. Once at a gas station & the cashier skimmed the card 3 times with his "oops, pressed the wrong key" out of sight becauseit was under the counter......then again at a postal outlet that had ATM machine.
It’s better to not swipe or insert your card. Use the tap method only. If their machine doesn’t have that option, that might be a red flag too.

Some Food Bazaar in NYC is scamming people too. I know 2 ppl who SNAP Benefits were skimmed while using this supermarket, smh.

Pay with your phones guys! Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay all use tokenization, which means your digital wallet protects your card numbers by creating a « fake » one that is transmitted to the machine. That way, your card info is never revealed to the machine.
The only inconvenient thing is that if you return an article and the clerk says your card number doesn’t match, means you have to accept the credit with your phone as well.
It also works when you use those payments methods for online purchases. PayPal is another good option for online purchases.
@@PhxSmlmy niece got scammed on PayPal in Dec 2023. Someone ordered about $1400 on her PayPal Acct. She told them close her acct and she's not paying "ish", they investigated the charges and cleared her of the charges.
The liability should be placed on the store. We shouldn't have to play detective to use your stupid machines. If money is stolen from a skimmer, YOU PAY!

One more reason to have employees checking you out, as opposed to self checkout. Same with the gas pumps, take the time to go in & pay first. Simple as that.
Useless info here. No 2 machines are anything alike and most look like they've been beaten with a hammer by angry customers anyway. Convenience store managers and owners are the most common criminals placing these skimmers on the stores machines. It's far more organized than just 2 people with backpacks.

Not black market. Grey market at worst because they are using equipment that has multiple other legitimate purposes.
