Probert made sure to hold Nyland's jersey as he fell so that he wouldn't hit his head. Say what you want, but that was a class move, especially after Nyland got a bunch of shots in during the fight. RIP Probby.
Tough guys no doubt, the concept confuses me. Is this their "job", can they actually play? I played rugby /rugby league and you had to be able to play well first. Cheap shots, targeting good/young players were sorted in house. Fights were generally only good for losing a player for the rest of the match. Having a player that "just" fights seems like a wasted position/player weakening the teams chance of winning?
Notice how Probert never hit him when Nyland was down? Even though those two men were "tuff guys" they still showed each other lots of respect. Not like todays NHL.
Probert was an experienced fighter. He did this a lot. The first half of the fight he'd hold back and let the opponent wear himself out. Then, Probie would finish strong.
David Miles It's been two years since you posted this comment, so the following is me talking from the future. The NHL has become even less like it used to be, not only do they no longer fight but you rarely even see a decent body check. AND the Leafs have become a decent and respected team that are in first place.
Love the commentary of Dave Strader and Mickey Redmond. Bob Probert, the undisputed heavyweight champion of hockey. Still loved in Detroit and always will be.
BOOM! Man, you must have been nuts, to try and fight Bob Probert. Not even Ogie Oglethorp would have tried! When hockey was still the sport it was inteded to be.
Reminds me of a game between these 2 in this building about a year later just before c'mas. About a million penalty mins., just fantastic stuff. There was even some great hockey played. Best part, the Chicago crowd was clearly chanting 'Detroit sucks!'. Mickey Redmond responds to the Det. TV audience 'The crowd is chanting 'These are the Hawks' recognizing the three game winning streak they have put together'. Mickey is a loveable homer. I guess when you score 50 for a crap team you can be one!
no,the uppercut dropped chris.i watched it 3x joe d.it was the uppercut that crippled nilan.he dropped like a sack of potatoes joe.great shot, nilan never saw it,..the hawk's dr.sais that nilan collapsed after leaving the ice area from dizziness he was suffering from proberts crippling uppercut.
Best fighter ever. Maybe not the best pest, and certainly not the best agitator, but that man could throw down with ANYONE and usually come out on top.
When hockey was hockey...I still love the sport, but the days of the enforcers, bench clearing brawls and toughness are gone...Very few Cam Neely's left...RIP...
This is a great example of what made Probert such a great fighter--he could take a punch, and he was great LATE in fights. When you fought him, you had better get your shots in early and you'd better hit to hurt. Most of the guys he fought weren't successful doing this.
I like the quote, "This is where fighting can get dangerous and someone can get hurt." Considering that one of the combatants suffered a brain injury from repetitive head injuries, it's quite an accurate statement. Still, as long as hockey is played this will happen. Still a great sport.
Nyland actually did alright for most of the fight - probem is the fight went longer than most and Probert said in his book it was his stamina that allowed him to win so many fights.
Wow...I forgot that Roger Nielson was the coach of the Blackhawks.....only ever thought of him behind the bench of the Leafs and the Canucks, and the Rangers, I think near the end. He really did get around
Probert & Nylund and Secord & McRae are all fighting and the linesmen are concentrating on a fight between Ed Olczyk & Lee Norwood? Is that what they learn in linesman school to break up the fight between non-fighters and let the fighters go to do their business?
oh give the guy a break, he's just jealous, Bob had a pretty good career playing the game he loved, made good money doing it, this guy probably washes dishes for a living.
Probert had incredible stamina. Nylund did well early in the fight, but Probert was the terminator. You think he's done but he's not. When he threw that final uppercut, Nylund was totally out of gas. Alright Probey! R.I.P. GO RED WINGS!!
big Al wanted nothin to do with macrae and hes lucky Probert didn`t get a hold of him either, and notice after the KO Bob left him on the ground and skated away, pure class too!!
I don't know? Where the fuck was Gary Bettman's Mind when the Red Wings and Black Hawks were separated in Next Year's NHL Division Realignment? Judging from this video, those two teams should be kept in the Same Division until there is no more NHL Hockey!
Probert made sure to hold Nyland's jersey as he fell so that he wouldn't hit his head. Say what you want, but that was a class move, especially after Nyland got a bunch of shots in during the fight. RIP Probby.
Yeah, it was.
That was the trade mark of both bruise brothers. Unless you gave them a reason not to

Strong New It's part of their job, but not their only job. If they had no skills beyond being a tough guy, they wouldn't be playing in the NHL.
Love the ref just whispering to him "Listen kid you gave it your best shot but its Bob fucking Probert"
Kid? Nylund was 2 years older than Probert. Nylund was no slouch.
rcoveyduc Did not know that haha he looks so much younger
I was never a Probert fan, but gotta admit that if your team goon can get 300+ PIM a season and score 15+ goals a season - that's pretty impressive.
Until Probert came to Chicago and they cleaned him up. He was never the same and scared nobody.
Probert knocks nylund out and holds him from crashing to the ice.
I think it was the following year that Probert again went over 300 pim's and scored 28 goals and made the all star team.
uppercut madness by the king of NHL fighters the late great Bob Probert... R.I.P.
As a Hawks fan, I miss these days. Every game was a bloodbath
ahhh the great old days. two or three great battles at once, with some organ music in the background for a little ambiance.
R.I.P Bob Probert
One of the best.
***** I didn't know he fought Kocur. When was this?
+lynchie137 They fought after Kocur was traded to the NYR. I wanna say, 94-95.
Killing OnAdrenaline Do you remember who won the fight by any chance?
***** Kocur could really throw 'em.
Probert was a badass and a good sport. he could have beat nyland to a pulp after that uppercut...
The longer a fight went, the stronger Probert got.
anthony iacobello You crazy Australian no one gets stronger as a fight goes on. He just got less weak than his opponents.
anthony iacobello hah your right
Notice how Probert never hit him when Nyland was down? Even though those two men were "tuff guys" they still showed each other lots of respect. Not like todays NHL.
Good lord - I've never understood why Nylund would drop his head like that in any fight, much less a fight against Bob Probert.
Probert was an experienced fighter. He did this a lot. The first half of the fight he'd hold back and let the opponent wear himself out. Then, Probie would finish strong.
Why can't hockey be like this anymore:(
David Miles It's been two years since you posted this comment, so the following is me talking from the future.

Steve Jobs if you're still around hopefully you're not, after what happened in Pittsburgh maybe you should take this down. You worthless fucking Nazi
@@aberamagold7509 sad as fuk but true how boring
All Time Hockey At Its Best.
SJW snowflakes, up in Canada are the reason.
I miss the good ol' days.
Go Wins, Go Yzerman, one of my heroes growing up.
Probert gets stronger as the fight goes on,u will learn this
This is a picnic compared to Detroit- Colorado brawl of March 97
You got that right!
I loved when Probert was with the Red Wings.
Probert was a fucking beast. One of my favorite Red Wings and fighters in history.
Give Blood, Fight Probie!
good thing probert didn't put much behind that uppercut or nilan would have been seriously hurt...still,he drpped nilan like a bad habit.
incredible upperut by probert, wow
This would be 86-87. It was Probert's rookie year & Olczyk's last year in Chicago.
False. Proberts rookie year was 1985-86.
***** Yes, this was in 1986-87, but Proberts rookie year was 1985-86.
i doubt if there was a next time. only a chosen few rematch with the probe
Hope there was a rematch. Perhaps somebody out there has it on videotape.
was there ever a greater and stronger Fighter in the history of Hockey as Probert
Reminds me of a game between these 2 in this building about a year later just before c'mas. About a million penalty mins., just fantastic stuff. There was even some great hockey played. R.I.P. Bob
In today's game, probert or nylund wouldn't be out in the last minutes of the game with a goalie pulled
they werent out in those days either dunce
great clip....thanks for the up.
no,the uppercut dropped chris.i watched it 3x joe d.it was the uppercut that crippled nilan.he dropped like a sack of potatoes joe.great shot, nilan never saw it,..the hawk's dr.sais that nilan collapsed after leaving the ice area from dizziness he was suffering from proberts crippling uppercut.

I'm so glad they upload this video
old-time hockey
This is why Bettmans decision to separate the Hawks and Wings is so wrong on many levels!
Sweet Dreams...
I wish I could beat my coworkers when I'm pissed.
Who says you can't. Live a little.
and all you get is 5:00 somewhere
🤣🤣
The good old "Chuck" Norris division.
That was a pretty even fight until Probie got that uppercut in.

Detroit is the end all be all in skill and whoop ass. There will never be a team that can raise their head as high.
Nyland actually did alright for most of the fight - probem is the fight went longer than most and Probert said in his book it was his stamina that allowed him to win so many fights.
stairs into the locker rooms? wtf
Just ANOTHER thing wrong with that fuggin chicago team...
back in the day when Mickey Redmond got excited about his job long before the European Icecapades invaded the Joe...
+Kasandra Mann When the europeans invaded is when the Wings won those 4 cups
Got to love Mickey Redmond!
Probert rocks Nylunds world. Great vid.
Wow...I forgot that Roger Nielson was the coach of the Blackhawks.....only ever thought of him behind the bench of the Leafs and the Canucks, and the Rangers, I think near the end. He really did get around
probert was one tough sob. rip.
Probert & Nylund and Secord & McRae are all fighting and the linesmen are concentrating on a fight between Ed Olczyk & Lee Norwood? Is that what they learn in linesman school to break up the fight between non-fighters and let the fighters go to do their business?
This made me laugh. Good point made.
ouch
true stuff though.
i think our 14-2-3 record has something else to say, djhussl.
GO WINGS!
ug. this video just makes me look in the air and wonder why cant hockey be like this anymore.
oh give the guy a break, he's just jealous, Bob had a pretty good career playing the game he loved, made good money doing it, this guy probably washes dishes for a living.
that's why u never duck your head like that..
I really REALLY miss the barn, and I am a Wing-nut.... dammit that we park on top of it now..
Probert had incredible stamina. Nylund did well early in the fight, but Probert was the terminator. You think he's done but he's not. When he threw that final uppercut, Nylund was totally out of gas. Alright Probey! R.I.P. GO RED WINGS!!
I cant believe Probert decked him either! I didn't see the damn thing cuz the cameraman didn't catch it!!
big Al wanted nothin to do with macrae and hes lucky Probert didn`t get a hold of him either, and notice after the KO Bob left him on the ground and skated away, pure class too!!
The only goal Bob Murray ever scored...
who?
Gotta love old time hockey
Gary Bettman dislikes this 14 times!
Don Davis or Blackhawks fans
Don Davis yup. Gary ( Bobble Head) Bettman would hate this.
probie was the best.. started slow but look out!
+jeff jones Always threw his best shots after he took a couple himself.
oh for sure lol
@porterhouse i think it was classy of him not to pound Nylund when he was standing over him with a free arm....what do you call it?
love that old 80s Chicago Stadium goal horn!
i miss this rivalry
That one ref should be in a head & shoulders or selsson blue commercial with that hair of his
damn i wish i lived in the 80's. iron maiden days...
Was the fucking best, please believe! =)
Go Red Wings.Bring the warrior passion!
good ol donnybrook!
Nylund needed to keep his chin down. Probey more expirienced schooled his ass
Nice uppercut AYE????!!!
Probert seemed to be smiling after taking a couple of shots to the head, you really don't want to get into a fight with a guy like that.
i miss al secord and bob probert, c'rtait le bon temps
is the organist playing "Wipeout"?
Probert just looked relaxed for the first few minutes. Thats great strategy I think.
Bob Probert the Best!как это по пнглийски ..... Необыкновенный
Bobby Probert you were the best R.I.P
Eddie O fighting with Norwood in the box out of the box.Luv it
Probert was a monster.. the best when he was in his prime
Right on the button
I miss the good old days.
B
When hockey was worth watching
I can't believe Probie let him hug up on him for that long before he decided to get rid of him.
Probie clearly won that battle, but hey, I gotta say, respect to Nylund for lasting as long as he did in there.
PROBIE!
I don't know? Where the fuck was Gary Bettman's Mind when the Red Wings and Black Hawks were separated in Next Year's NHL Division Realignment?
Judging from this video, those two teams should be kept in the Same Division until there is no more NHL Hockey!
as much as I love hockey, this is sickening to watch. I'm glad brawls like this are a rarity in the NHL today.
hopefully you've found the badminton channel.
That's what you get for messin' with Probie...
Good ol' chicago stadium
i miss fighting in hockey,
tho the wings had a good one yesterday
Old time hockey!
WHOA SHIT!!!! is that bubbles behind the glass in the stands?!!!!! 1:05
R.I.P. Probie
Facing Probert the book - TBP in 2017
R.I.P Probie ..
Was weird watching Stu Grimson fight Probert all the time, then Probert come over to the hawks, and was the enforcer.
bochafish Then Grimson played for the Wings
At about 1:18 after taking a couple of rights to the side of the Probert looks to be smiling. That's I bad dude.
lol at the organist playing "We Are The World."
RIP Probie.
