- Astra Turbo. In depth installation guide of Z20LEH turbo unit in a MK4 Opel Astra with Z20LET engine.
This is a one man job and can be done easily if you have the confidence and the right tools.
With recommended oil restriction mod.
Available from myworld.ebay.com/24kturbo/ Авто/Мото
I don't even have a astra but I still love watching your vids
Thanks to this guide ive done this job twice now, gave me the confidence to try it.
Amazing video, dude you're the best
Good tip Hans. The restriction bolt is recommended with the VXR (LEH) turbo on the Z20LET engine as the Z20LEH feeds lower pressure to it's turbo due to the under piston oil jets. Or so I have heard.
Watching the video will answer your question of whether I had installed the restrictor though :)
this is the most worth video on youtube . i like this and that teachs me much things
Fantastic video mate, really useful.
Love it for the sounds aswell lol!
The break off pressure on the Z20LET is set at 9psi and the break off on the VXR is set at 10psi if I recall so really is minimal.
The boost controller bleeds off pressure to the actuator to ge the higher boost anyway and the boost is all electrically controlled.
@Moris469 sorry for the late response.
Any brand of torque wrench will do mate.
White assembly paste is a genuine Vauxhall on and the blue stuff is Locktight to keep the bolts tight.
absolut großartiges Video! Ich fürchte aber, dass viele Schrauben nicht so leicht zu lösen sind!
Top video mate, when my vxr turbo dies I will put hybrid on. Good for a inside on how its done
very good video there! keep up the good work!
Yeah people say to do that, but the ECU controls the boost. Installed this turbo 3 years ago and it still safely peaks at 12psi which is stock for the Z20LET.
Beau travail ^^
Great work ! great video !
YOU ARE FREAKIN' AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent video!!!
@mskeysers The reason I put on the video to check with your dealer for torque specs was because I didn't trust the specs I had. (Sorry for the late reply mate)
Hi Chris, very useful video thanks for posting. Just a quick question, when you fit the new studs you use an assembly paste; is this a vital step? When I bought studs and nuts from Vauxhall I asked if they kept assembly paste and they didn't even know what it was! Is there an alternative?
hi this video is excellent and used it to change mine the wknd:-))) thanks
Great Work and Great wideo man!! super!!!!
@chrispix thanks a lot mate, my turbo got here today so ill be giving it a go on the weekend. how many NM did u tighten the fittings on your new turbo up to? coolant lines etc.
thats a pretty cool video... and the sounds very enertaining
GREAT excellent job,you are the BEST!!!!!
firstly i must say i very good video it helped me so much .........right might be a stupid question , when you put the two nuts onto the thread is one off the nuts a reverse thread ?
Love the video. It gave me enough info to give it a try myself. My Holden Astra SRi now has a new VXR turbo to replace the noisy Z20LET one that was on it's way out (175k). The feels like new. Whoever put those air conditioner pipes where they block the turbo and put those bottom studs in the most inaccessable places should have been shot. 3 hours real actual work, many more hours and cramped hands with those bottom studs and bolts. Cheers.
great stuff m8
Chris mate, just a quick one, roughly how long did you crank the engine for? for priming the turbo? and is it necessary to drain all the coolant off?
I have Z20LET still ok at the moment my turbo is but this video is definatly going to help me in future as im looking at upgrading to the VXR turbo. Their a straight fit and basically same engine apart from a few upgrades like forged pistons, under piston oil etc etc. Excellent video though. Check CS Autos in Liverppol for all GSI,SRI,VXR Parts.
@DazzlinDaryn1987 It's just a straight swap for a standard engine. Nothing needs to be upgraded unless you are after more power.
The difference if kept standard is boost comes on a fraction higher in the rev range but it holds on where the original turbo would lose it's breath.
I wouldn't call it a power increase though.
But if you are after more power, then this turbo is a great starting point.
Did you experience the turbo blowing oil seals after some thousands of miles? The LET has a much higher operating oil pressure than the LEH, and many say swapping oil pumps/installing a restrictor bolt is necessary for turbo longevity.
Great video, keep it upp.
@chrispix thanks, but my mechanic don't find a problem.. the livel oil is ok! i change: timing belt, head gasket, rocker cover gasket, oil, filter oil, filter air, filter benzin, water pump and candles...
nice video mate you now how to install intercooler on a 17 isuzu gemini turbo diesel
I guess it depends how you treat your car. If it's tuned for more power and the turbo is boosting higher than standard then there is more chance of it not lasting long.
hi great video, I recently bought an astra gsi turbo about 3 months ago and I suspect the turbo is smoking, my question is, is the vxr turbo good as some have said they don't last long?
Very nice guide , helpfull .
great job! Great!
@chrispix
Big thanks matey. Just in the process of fitting mine now, though its got to come off, as I somehow forgot to put the sodding copper washers on the cooling lines! Do you happen to have the torque settings for these? my dealer is as much use as Stevie Wonders eyesight...
Best Video on youtube!
Thank you for the video ...
очень полезное видео, спасибо!
lol i like the little creature that pased by when u where putting hands on the turbo hahha
@chrispix great video mate. i just ordered my new turbo (old 1 packed it in :( ) and am gonna give the change over a crack myself thanks to this vid.
sorry to be a pain in the ass but do u think u could list the required tools?
i gotta go out an buy them and i wanna make sure i get the right ones coz once i start, ive got no car until im finished.
most of them look fairly common but not sure of sump plug fitting, manifold stud size etc. any help would be great.
cheers!
Tu sais bosser man!
On a Holden none the less.. picked up on the wheels. I'm am Adelaide boy.. respect these cars most than most Aussies. Lol
Great Vxr Turbo install.. well done!! How does it go now??
IN THE TOP OF THE TURBO :)
Oil feed, yes.
Good job bro but Why do u run a restricted oil feed? And is it safe to jack up on the front part of the subframe?
Let me know, how long did it take for you to install the turbo. Anyone quicker than 9 minutes?
I replaced my turbo in 30 minutes, fitted a controller and bov All up it took me about 3 hours - first time i have ever done anything major to a car before - this video helped a tonne
Do you have the workshop manual for this engine?
Video is amazing. Your in Australia too? That's mad
How long should the first start smoke last? If it lasts too long do I have a problem?
excelente!!!
Hi. Can hou make a video about how to clean sensors. For example air flow sensor or some others. Thanks
@patrikbrunt Heya, The assembly paste I have is official GM stuff but marked as not to be sold to customers or something silly like that. It's just an anti seize paste to make it easy to get the nuts off again. Try looking around in an automotive store for some.
if its not leaking, if theres no weird noises and if no strange sounds from turbo and it accelerates OK so no worries mate - you're good to go :)
You see yours Astra is not even leaking. Mine does.
Btw i was not joking about leaking Ecotecs. I remember i was reading some car magazine ca. 10 years ago where they tested a new Opel Vectra Caravan 2.0 DTI ecotec. They drove from Berlin to Warsaw with it. And it was already leaking. The journalists then adressed the GM who said it was coincidence
@DazzlinDaryn1987 I'm not sure mate. Best talk to the place that did the map. The standard map overboosts for the first couple of drives and then settles back to normal once it's learnt about the new air flow. Your map it telling the computer to boost more already so it might be fine. But again I would ask the place that did your map.
@chrispix Thanks for the reply, i'd like a bit more power but not sure how much as I don't know how much the gearbox and clutch will take, I've already had my car re-mapped on the standard turbo with vxr fuel injectors (running around 250bhp) will it need mapped again with the vxr turbo?
thanks for the answer bro!! my astra turbo has an z20LER, i want to do that upgrade did you know if the courtenay sport has this vxr kit?? how much does it costs; thank you!!
Oil restrictor bolt wasn't a Vauxhall fitment or recall its an aftermarket modification by a guy called percy from VXRo.
Very interesting video, how much more Power you now have? Best regards
verry verry good :D .. the best ive seen !!! :D
My Master :D
Was there any notice in performance or spool lag after installing this and not having remap?
is it a simple bolt on job or do I need other piping? sorry to be a pain just im about to buy a vxr turbo and just need to know what ill need to fit it.
hi Chrispix,
I have a question. Where the wastegate contrail wire ends? i accidentally disconnected not from Turbo, it is still connected in Turbo itself, it came out on the other end, now my engine runs unstable. thanks advance for reply.
Hi mate I know its a daft question but I need to change my manifold gasket so I was wondering have I got to do ruffly the same as what your doing in order to change it Or just undo the bolts like the c20xe? Ive never owned a vauxhall turbo z20let before
I agree ;)
Do u Need To Do a Remap When u Installl the turbo
Thanks for the video, very helpful. What would you say the maximum reliable boost is on these turbos as I have one to go on my corsa c gsi convertion. Thanks
I run about 21 psi for a few years now, I think that is about max reliable when using good quality oil changed more regularly
What is the torque setting ..I wanna install the new stock turbo to my z20leh with a new modified exhaust manifold.
Not necessary really, I didn't adjust it. At first there's a little bit of over boosting but the computer will automatically adjust to z20let spec. Even when the ECU is reset, it will remember as well :)
is it recommended or nessesary to take new oil lines? Why?
@lion050887 Hi Ivan, you're burning oil if the exhaust has blue smoke. Could be a number of things, I'm not sure. Best to take it to a mechanic if you're worried.
Hi Chrispix, I wonder : what is a VXR turbo ? An Astra H OPC 240hp turbo ?
I would have adjusted the actuator as Z20LEH boost is higher than the Z20LET,
I have a Sri 2.0 turbo. Would it cause any damage on the engine if I install the Vxr turbo on it ? Because my manifold cracked and turbo seals are gone. so I am gonna have to buy new one.
so if i did this would i need to change anything else like coolant system or ECU settings ect?
do u need tune your car after the pov install?tnxgreat videos btw keep on going
dare petrovski No tune needed. Thanks mate. I will make more one day when I have time.... and a garage to do them in.
How much more power from a vxr turbo than a standard 2.0 l turbo if any
Which Motor Oil did you use?
Hey any video like this on a corsa vxr?
Merci
nice!
show us some tutorials about suspension please :]
hey bro im form mexico and i have an Astra and here its the astra H it has an z20let 2.0 turbo im think its the same engine as yours what its the diference between my stock turbo and the vxr turbo ??
@drummerboi60
You can't put a reverse thread not onto a normal thread >_<
You can use 2 nuts like that, tightened against each other to let you undo the studs. Saves you having to buy/borrow/use a stud extractor.
@eaglet888
The ZLET motor is a turbocharged engine as stock, so what do you mean "it wasn't turbocharged before"? O_o
Bought from Autovaux. Was about 500 british pounds including the fitting kit.
Is your car an Opel Astra with Holden hub caps or a Holden Astra with an Opel badged grille?
Vaios Kaliakoudas that's an interesting question. It's a Holden. These days it's got full Opel badges apart from the floor mats.
What are the expected bhp gains?
I noticed a deadly poisonous catrepillar pass by ur hand ...
is it lethal?
hey man, where did u learn to do this? did u go to school, if u did where?
chrispix i know its a old vid but ive just bought a Zaf GSI with tis engine in it. I have heard that the original turbos are naff and do blow, crack etc. 2005 GSI bro with 80k still on original turbo!
Hey Andi, the old turbo should be ok if it's had a good life and not driven hard all the time. If it's not burning loads of oil, it'll probably be fine for years to come.
I have 123000 miles and still on original turbo on my vxr turbo. Change oil regularly with good quality oil and don't kick the turbo in for long periods cause they run at high temps after a few minutes of hard boosting
@@darrenmicklewright2008 DONE 111.5K now bro and still going strong. she hisses like a phython and pulls like leonardo
@noxious89123
reverse thread *nut* i meant.
Hello can anyone help, I've done this mod as per this video but the oil feed and oil return aren't lining up properly and I can't do them up not sure why, any ideas?
7years since the video been released...
and im just sitting here thinking about turbocharging my 1.8 astra coupe z20let...
@chrispix so u just taught yourself to work on cars?
do you have to drain radiator?
wath HP you have now with the mwe turbo¿
Could i install turbo on opel astra g 1998 2.0l ecotec?
you seem to have several spaceships zipping by in the background
@drummerboi60 if u put 2 nuts on a thread and tighten them together... they will lock together..
